"Obsession" by Rob Sinclair is a gripping thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. The story follows a complex and unpredictable plot, filled with twists and turns that will leave readers guessing until the last page. Sinclair's writing style is engaging, fast-paced, and filled with suspense, making it a compelling read for fans of the genre.
The plot follows protagonist Natasha Simonsen, who had been estranged from her sister Anya many years back and has been battling a relationship crisis in her life following a break-up with her boyfriend. When she learns that her sister has been murdered in Spain and her father is not doing enough to bring the perpetrators to justice, she decides to take the reigns into her own hands and travels to Spain. Natasha reaches Sotogrande in Spain’s Costa Del, a playground for the rich and famous. She begins to wonder how her sister could afford to rent a multi-million-pound property without having a job.
She begins her mission by visiting the police, who are equally baffled by her lifestyle, and informs Natasha that an acquaintance of her sister Anaya, a local drug dealer was also found dead a few days later. Initial investigation by the police revealed that the drug dealer was responsible for Anya’s death, but with his death, the investigation hit a roadblock. In her quest to find out more about her sister’s death, she begins to talk to people staying in and around her sister’s apartment complex. But she kept hitting a brick wall every time she spoke to anyone who knew Anya.
The police revealed to her that there were multiple fingerprints found at the crime scene and all of them had strong alibis at the time of Anya’s murder. She learns that just around the period of her sister’s death, there was a multi-millionaire Arab family, their flamboyant son, and a famous national footballer who resided in the Sotogrande. Natasha begins to trace the life of her sister ever since she reached Spain, and the more she probed, her own life was in danger after being assaulted a few times, threatening her to stay away from the investigation.
Will the police help Natasha to unmask the face of her sister’s killer or will she be disappointed? This was not an easy task. She needed to find out what Anya was doing in Spain and who had the motive to kill her. The plot is narrated in multiple POVs and in different time zones – Summer, when the murder was committed, and Autumn when Natasha begins her investigation.
The characters in "Obsession" are well-developed and multi-dimensional, adding depth to the story and keeping readers invested in their fates. The protagonist is a flawed and relatable character, making it easy for readers to root for them despite their flaws.
Overall, "Obsession" is a thrilling and captivating read that is sure to keep readers hooked until the very end. Rob Sinclair has crafted a masterful thriller that will appeal to fans of the genre and keep them eagerly turning the pages, although I must admit that this is different from the author’s action-packed James Ryer series.
