In a world where honor is everything and magic is a divine gift, love becomes the most dangerous force of all.

Yoshi, the son of the Daimyo of Anzu Han, has always struggled to find his place. With the weight of his family’s legacy on his shoulders, he trains tirelessly with his best friend, Kaneko—whose sharp wit and undeniable charm stir emotions Yoshi doesn’t fully understand.

But when an unexpected storm brings an Imperial ship bearing a golden banner to their shores, Yoshi’s world is upended.

The Emperor's arrival is more than a mere visit. Whispers of rebellion stir in the shadows, ancient forces awaken, and the gods themselves seem restless.

Thrust into the heart of political intrigue and a brewing war, Yoshi must confront his own insecurities and navigate the treacherous waters of courtly deception.

Amid the chaos, his bond with Kaneko deepens into something far more than friendship—a connection that might cost them everything.

The Land of Jade and Book One is an epic romantic fantasy perfect for fans of slow-burn MM romance, sweeping worldbuilding, and high-stakes adventure.

YOSHI by Casey Morales
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received an E-book ARC edition of this novel in exchange for an honest review. It is Book One of the LAND OF JADE & FIRE Series. It is available NOW on Amazon & Kindle Unlimited:
https://www.amzn.com/B0DSM1LLBX

This is a 385-page Ancient Asian Historical Fantasy with a dash of MM romance. It is a slow burn with detailed world building and character development. Authentic Ancient terminology is used heavily as well as some modern wording.

--"Endurance is not simply about strength, but about bearing the weight of those you cannot save.”--

Witten mostly in alternating chapters duel POV until the end when a 3rd character POV is introduced. Yoshi and his childhood friend Kaneko are training when they see the Emperor’s Ships approach from a distance. During the visit, 4 teens go through a set of Trials to become adults: Honor, Strength, Wisdom, and Humility. Each trial helps you see the type of character they are and their growth. If you don’t survive the trials, you lose your life. Then all hell breaks loose. With the burning smell of danger and death, our friends end up on their own path to survival, not knowing what the future will look like. Life Lessons & Surprises will be had!

--“Integrity, Respect, Heroic Courage, Honor, Compassion, Honesty & Sincerity, Duty & Loyalty. Accepting these Virtues is your first step along the Path.”--

It’s a pretty complicated plot like most fantasy novels are. You just have to trust the process and go for the dangerous and adventurous ride. The biggest difference from any other fantasy I have read is the ethnic background. It took some time to really get into it only because it was different, but I enjoyed learning the terms, myths, and magic of their culture. (Plus DRAGONS!)

--"Life is never simple. Answers are rarely clear. Truth is often buried beneath lies.”--

The spice was non-existent. 1/5🌶. But that’s not a bad thing. BECAUSE IT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING! I can’t wait to see what is going to happen next with that curveball that was thrown near the end! What we did get to enjoy was an awesome first-time scene with humor and sweet, loving feels.

--“…cherish each other. No matter what anyone, royal or commoner, god or man, has to say about it. The bond you share is deeper than the sea herself.”--

He ensemble was extensive! From Yoshi's family, Emperor & Leaders, trial friends, townspeople, bad guys, and village citizens, it was not only a journey for our 2 MCs but for everyone!

--"Death and war are ever the enemies of harmony.”--

Like any fantasy, they rarely end on a concluded PERIOD (.). The 2nd book of the series was already announced HARU! By the sound of it, it’s going to get even more twisted and dangerous!

This is the first book in Casey's new series "Land of Jade and Fire." Set in ancient Asia, daily life includes co-existing with dragons, sea-serpents, and their religion that includes priests with magic powers and an Emperor that is their link between humanity on earth and their Gods in heaven.

We meet 17-yo Yoshi who is the only son of the land's Regional Governor (whose boss is the Emperor). Yoshi's best friends with Kaneko, the commoner son of a local fisherman. The first chunk of the book is all about Yoshi & Kaneko's evolving friendship that eventually morphs into a loving relationship. Although Yoshi is his father's heir and will be expected to create a family of his own, M/M relationships are not frowned upon in this universe and Yoshi & Kaneko's relationship is welcomed by Yoshi's family. Yoshi & Kaneko are chosen by the Emperor to go through a rite of passage that will lead them to adulthood and a life of future service, and they pass the grueling test. Things are looking good at this point and several years pass calmly.

Meanwhile, the greater Empire is churning politically. Yoshi's father chooses to remain neutral while an uprising against the Emperor gathers momentum. When he refuses to take sides, the rebels mount a surprise attack. Yoshi is spirited off to a temple for hiding, while Kaneko is captured by the rebels and sails off in the hold of their prison ship to be sold into slavery.

From here on we bounce back-and-forth between the two MC's living their new unexpected separate lives. They are both put through the wringer mentally, emotionally, spritually, and physically with a plethora of secondary characters. Thoughts of their relationship still float in their minds as the years pass, and reading between the lines gives you some hope that their paths will cross again in the future. We end with a cliffhanger - literally - and the journey to Yoshi & Kaneko's future gives us the foundation for the rest of the series!

‘Yoshi’ marks the thrilling start of a new series by Casey Morales. This epic novel transports readers to a meticulously crafted world inspired by ancient Asian cultures, presenting thoughtfully researched history and fiction in a beautifully balanced manner.

The story of Yoshi is not just a fictional tale but an exhilarating journey that explores themes of honor, courage, and the rich tapestry of cultural heritage. Casey Morales’s dedication to authenticity is evident on every page, allowing readers to immerse themselves in an era where every detail, from the characters’ attire to their customs, is steeped in historical context. This depth adds an enriching layer to the story, distinguishing it from typical fantasy offerings.

The characters are well-defined, as is usual with this writer’s work. Yoshi and Kaneko are two boys who have just passed the test of adulthood through five ritual trials, and at the same time, they realize that they are and have always been in love with each other. With all this going on in their lives, their village is invaded and destroyed by pirates working with other hostile actors to gain control of all the provinces. Being next in line to rule, Yoshi is swept away by his uncle, the Master Shogun, to a safe place while Kaneko, a fisherman’s son, is kidnapped to be sold as a slave by pirates.

If this first novel is any indication, you can expect Casey Morales to expand this world with more exciting, emotional installments, just as he did with his previous work, ‘Of Crowns & Quills’ His ability to draw readers into vast and engaging narratives will undoubtedly make ‘Yoshi’ a cornerstone of the series, captivating both new and returning fans of his writing.

A new epic adventure in which we immerse ourselves with delight, in a universe combining medieval Japan and the magic of the Kami.
We follow Yoshi and Kaneko, two teenagers taking their first steps into adulthood, from two different castes yet best friends since childhood, as they undergo the ritual that will make them men. It's also together that they realize that their friendship is much more than brotherhood. They discover their feelings and their sexuality when their world collapses and their village is attacked by pirates. Separated by tragic events, not knowing if the other has survived, we follow their separate journeys in a hostile universe where a war is brewing from which they cannot escape, especially when the gods get involved.
A promising first book that sets up a rich, intriguing universe and leaves us eagerly awaiting the next volume!

----

Yoshi is the first book in The Land of Jade and Fire series. Set in ancient Asia, Yoshi is the son of Daimyo and still struggling to find his place. He’s always been weak, but he knows this needs to change if he’s going to become Daimyo one day. Kaneko is Yoshi’s best friend even though they come from different social standings, they are there for each other. When an impending war is on the horizon chaos breaks out, ending with Yoshi and Kaneko separated. Each man will need to do their best and work their hardest to make it back to their friendship and so much more.

Fantasy isn’t mg typical go to, but I’ve enjoyed the other series I’ve read by Casey Morales and knew I needed to check this one out too. This story was very easy to fall into and well depicted. I enjoyed Yoshi and Kaneko and seeing how their stories played out. The suspense and intrigue on this book were great and there were some twists I definitely didn’t see coming. This is a great start to this new world and I look forward to seeing what comes next!

A fresh new adventure romance. This is not the usual romantasy setting and I really enjoyed that. Morales' world building is great with a lot of care taken with the Asian cultures that are interwoven into the story. Yoshi and Kaneko are both great characters and I was rooting for them throughout the book. I appreciate that Morales has stuck closely to the 2 MCs throughout so we can get deeper into their stories and motivations. This is a fairly low spice affair, with most of it coming right at the beginning of the story. I won't give anything away, but the romance part of this story didn't really go the way I was expecting and that's a nice surprise. And this is definitely not a stand alone book, we're left with cliffhangers that will need to be addressed in the next book. Take heed that there are pretty rough depictions of war and violence. Overall I really liked this book and NEED the second one soon so I can find out what happens to these 2 MCs.

Casey did it again. Well, no surprise there.
This book is an emotional and gripping journey, following two boys whose paths take them in opposite directions. Yoshi, burdened by expectations, learns that leadership isn’t just about strength—it’s about wisdom and choice. Kaneko, ripped from everything he knows, struggles to hold onto his identity while being forced into a life he never wanted. Their separation is heartbreaking, making every moment between them feel precious and fleeting.
The world is rich and immersive, filled with political intrigue, deadly trials, and a pirate society that feels both brutal and surprisingly human. The writing is beautiful, with moments of sharp humor balancing the deep emotions and high-stakes action.
The ending doesn’t offer easy answers, but that makes it even more powerful. It leaves you aching for what comes next, proving that some stories don’t just entertain—they stay with you.

I loved it! I love Casey Morales, and when an ARC opportunity showed up, I jumped on it, and I leave my voluntary review of this amazing book. First off, the world building is magnified. Close enough to reality, with a dash of magic and wonder, respectful of the real aspects, and fantastic enough to create a new world independently of how much you know of these cultures. Just for that, 5 stars. But the character are so well portrayed, I got sucked in within 5 minutes of reading, like usual with this author, and was surprised when it ended. I hate cliffhangers, but this one feels more like a pause to let the characters grow and develop more, so it was actually appreciated. That doesn’t mean I’m happy to wait for however long it takes for the next book to be published, but this is such a beautiful story, I am looking forward to reading more.

Yoshi and Kaneko have been friends since they were young, even though Yoshi was heir to the throne and Kaneko was a fisherman's son. Now teens they are spending even more time together, training for the unexpected and the more time they spend together, the closer they get until the horrors of war makes an appearance on their quiet island.
As you are reading this story the world develops before your eyes, and you are drawn into a story involving first love, loyalty, betrayal and the consequence of war. Watching Yoshi and Kaneko get closer and exploring their love, only then to have it taken away.
Told from both Yoshi and Kaneko POV, lets you understand their hopes and fears and when tragedy strikes, what they are going through and how it is affecting them.
The ending has left me craving for more and I am eagerly waiting the 2nd book

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I seem to be in the minority, but I didn't not like this book at all. It had everything I liked, gay romance, epic fantasy, and a hint of Japanese mythology. I rven thought it ws a good balance of romance and fantasy (which is to say a lot more fantasy than romance)... but it just didn't work out.

I didn't like any of the characters, the story wasn't entertaining, and there was nothing intruiging enough to keep me reading. If I hadn't read this as an ARC, I would have dropped it pretty early on.

It had all the incredibly tedious parts of the romantasy genre, just with two men instead of a man and a woman. I didn't find anything to be unique or to hold my attention.

And the end of this book, and the third POV was so incredibly icky that I couldn't care about what else was happening.

Casey does it again! The way he is able to create a world on the pages, pulls you into the story as if you are there. I will admit that I had to look some words up due to them being of varying Asian history, but it made the story more "real". I love the dynamic between Yoshi and Kaneko. There is so much there between these two, friendship, training partners, maybe more...... There is so much packed into this book that takes you on this sweeping adventure that you will not want to put it down no matter what time it is. Get you copy and follow these men and women that make up this story so you will be ready to continue the journey with the next book.

I must start out saying that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I did have a few ‘wait, what’ moments and found myself having to go back and reread several sections. Some were plot points that didn’t pay off until later in the story. The ‘ok, I get it’ moments. But there were a couple holes. Otherwise, this is a solid first entry in a new series. Be forewarned that it does end on a cliffhanger. And you may not like the direction the relationship between the MC’s may be heading toward the last third of the book. Left me confused and more than a tad upset. But this is only book one. I will definitely be reading book two. I’m already invested the main characters.

Two young men from different classes have a beautiful friendship in ancient Asia. Just as they realize that their feelings for eachother is more than friends, their village is attacked and they are separated. Casey dose an amazing job bringing the characters to life. This story has love, adventures, humor, struggles as well as pain and heart aches. Not to mention the unexpected twists that will keep you turning the pages. I was a little sceptical that Casey could bring the Asian aspect of the storyline to life but he did and amazing job. This authors proves he is a very versatile writer. Definitely recommend and can't wait for the next book in this awesome new series. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing tale of far Eastern adventure.

This is a fantastic read! From the beginning to the cliffhanger ending, I was totally engrossed in this fascinating story. The author did a lot of research for the amount of detail this tale contains.
As the reader, I was transported into a mystical world where anything can happen and I loved it. I can't wait for the next book to come out next year.
The reading was made easy with good grammar and spelling and I got through the book quickly.
This author writes many great books and I have enjoyed many of them. Keep up the fantastic work!

This book was EPIC! Set in ancient Japan, this book contains samurai, dragons, and magic. It's about Yoshi, the son of the leader, and his best friend, Kaneko, the son of a fisherman. Yoshi and Kaneko are growing into manhood and facing their feelings for one another when war comes to their village. And Kaneko is kidnapped. I really enjoyed this book! Author Casey Morales has a gift for world building and storytelling. I felt like I was there, watching it all. This is book one in this new series, Land of Jade & Fire, and I can't wait for book two.

This story is masterful in the way it introduces us to a historical world filled fascinating on its own. But then there is the slow burn connection between our MC Yishi and his training partner Kaneko. They are best friends that are destined to be so much more but there is danger in that. The arrival of an imperial ship puts into motion circumstances that will test these young men and draws the reader into a story that it rich and layered. Nicely done and there are further stories in this series to look forward to.

Richly detailed and emotionally layered, Yoshi is a captivating start to a new MM fantasy series. Morales weaves a vivid world where duty, magic, and rebellion collide—and at the center is a tender, slow-burn romance between Yoshi and Kaneko that feels both inevitable and dangerous. The plot is immersive, with high stakes and political intrigue, but it’s the depth of the characters and the realism in their emotions that really shine. A beautifully written adventure full of heart, honor, and quiet longing.

Superb storytelling, great world-building, a plot that keeps moving, and well-developed characters make this book one of my favorites. In this book, Yoshi and Kaneko are at the cusp of manhood, childhood friends who awaken to their attraction and love for each other. Their part of the world is also on the cusp of dark, ominous changes. It is a world of ofte remote gods and goddesses, magic, dragons, and spiritual powers. It's a story of good versus evil and those who want to take and destroy. Ends on cliffhangers. Very powerful! I'm eagerly anticipating Bk 2!

Thank you for the book. This is my honest review:
I’m a fan of this author but I think I’ll be skipping the fantasy books going forward. This was all world building, which, while skillfully done and elaborate- it’s just not very compelling for me to read. I’m sure there will be romance at some point, but it’s not really part of this book. Sorry to say, this one wasn’t for me. If you’re interested quests and intricate fantasy worlds, you may love it.

Sometimes it takes an awakening to find ourselves even in feudal Japan.

This book peeked my interest due to the time period. I enjoyed the precision and care the author took to make sure things were right and done with as much care as needed.

The characters, places and story were intriguing and as soon as I picked it up I couldn’t put it down.

Coming of age

Yoshi by Casey Morales is a really good book that explores coming of age in an ancient Asian island society. Yoshi and Kaneko are the love interests in this one but by the end they are each finding their way through difficult situations.
I love the story but I am ready to read the next one to see where it goes!

The story was interesting, but I would point out up front that, for me, this is a not an MM romance. Rather, it is a book where the two main leads both happen to be male and attracted to each other. In this way, it echoes my reaction to one of the author's previous books, An Archer's Awakening, where I started my review with a similar sentiment:

"Firstly, I want to point out that while this book has a MM couple in it, I would not classify it as a romance but rather as a fantasy that includes a MM couple among other main characters. "

(and yes, I am actually quoting myself 😁)

Getting back to this book, there is only one sex scene, where our two very young (late teens at best), very virginal MC's have sex and the scene is portrayed with all the awkwardness and hesitation you'd expect between two such folks experiencing their first time. While this is endearing, it's hardly the stuff of what you'd want from a book in the romance genre, especially if it's the only sex in the book.

Our two MC's are actually separated early on in the story due to an invasion and spend the rest of the book not knowing if either one survived, much less where they physically are. The author actually introduces the potential of one of the MC's reconciling themselves to the loss of their partner to the degree that they begin to be open to the possibility of falling for someone else. Quite honestly, I'm not sure if the two MC's in this book remain a couple in the next book, especially since the next book appears to be centered on a third character who I could actually see being paired with the title character of this book. If that opinion sounds confusing or hard to follow, well, that's because the "romance" part of this book left me in limbo. 🫤

Overall, this is a decent read, but don't go looking for romance of the swoony or heart-felt type. I'm undecided on whether I will venture on to book #2 when it comes out.

Yoshi is the son of the ruler, the Daimyo of the island Tooi. His best friend is Kaneko, a fisherman's son. The young men realize they are in love but there is trouble in their political climate. Their lives start out in peace but the turmoil separates them and forces them on different paths. The book is rich in Asian culture and tradition but full of sorrow in the tearing apart of families and the lovers. As part of a series, this book ends with no resolution, no peace for the men, torn apart and lost to each other - in other words, a cliffhanger. Casey, as always, writes fascinating books, rich in character, heritage and colorful descriptions that are addicting in content and keep you absorbed and entertained.
