Monster Mates #2

Bound to the Naga

Rate this book
Pawning my grandma's bracelet was supposed to be temporary—not contractually bind me to a breathtaking naga.

Now I'm working off my debt at Sundar’s pawn shop, trying not to stare at his powerful tail, or imagine all the wicked ways he could pin me down with it...

But Sundar isn’t just hard to resist—he’s impossible to read. One moment he’s cold-blooded and controlled. The next, his possessive instincts are wrapping tighter than his coiled tail.

I know better than to fall for my boss. But the more time I spend under his golden gaze, the more I wonder... What happens when a naga decides to keep what's his?

Bound to the Naga is a spicy standalone monster romance featuring a brooding, possessive naga hero, plenty of sizzling tension, and a heroine who definitely isn’t as careful as she should be. Perfect for fans of dangerously hot monsters. Guaranteed HEA included!

When I read this I was looking for a cute standalone monster romance. This delivered that in spades and I backtracked to read the first book - Scorched by the Hellhound - soon after. I now have an unexpected niche interest in romances featuring ethical pawnshop owners who are obsessive collectors. Maybe I just like Sandar a whole lot.

Sandar was so cute and awkward at times. He’s just our immortal Naga nerd boy and we love him for that. Thank the Lord, he found his way away from his ex Nalini .

Aubrey is doing the best she can but it is a challenge. At the beginning of the story, she makes the tough emotional choice to pawn her priced possession, her grandmother’s bracelet. That is how Sandar enters her story, but he changes it for the better by offering her a job instead of a deal that would kick her financial struggles down the road. I dream of a full benefit job for that good of money.

Overall, it's cute. There is some fun tension that I won’t spoil. I read book One soon after Book Two and am anticipating finding the time for Captured by the Cthulhu.

This was a sweet and steamy read that brings together Naga, Sunder, and Human gal, Aubrey. He owns the pawn shop desperation made her visit to pawn off a family heirloom. He's struck by her and makes her a hard deal to force her to come back to him. I love that he was so kind but couldn't figure a better way, despite his years, to spend more time with her and gets her working for him... with better pay, to boot ;P These two dance around each other, deal with his nasty ex, until they finally can't resist their connection. Expect to get caught up in the humour, drama, angst, magic and fated mates romance when you dive into this fun read :D

It was boring and a little predictable. I didn’t feel any connection with the main couple.

I ate this book up! Spicy level id say 1-2 🌶. It has action, it has comedy, and it has unexpected romance that will leave you wanting more! My favorite teaser is....

I blink. “Scaled?” “Mmhmm. He’s a naga. You know, a half-man, half-snake chiseled god sort of deal?”.

The title says it all. I had no idea what a Naga was but since there is a lovely graphic on the cover that helped me.

In this book there is a law that just recently went into effect that allowed all “mythical” beings to reveal themselves.

In an unforeseen turn of events Aubree Garrett needs some extra income for the month. Now normally she wouldn’t think to pawn her grandmothers priceless heirloom but she needs the cash and fast. She goes to the local pawn shop where she strikes a deal with a Naga named Sundar. It is when her deal is up and she can’t pay to get her heirloom back that the Naga decides to make a new deal with Aubree.

This book is an original story that I have never had the pleasure to read before. These are complex characters and side supporting characters that help make this story the best it can be. This author made it so intriguing and kept me on my toes this whole book. You will enjoy this one of kind tale!.

4&1\2 fabulous🌟's for Bound to the Naga 💖🔥🌟

Loved it! The characters are well written and have chemistry from the .I Ute they meet. Sundar is a centuries old Guardian Naga that has open his own pawn shop that is a blend of magical and non magical items..he's been alone for along time but his life completely changes when a human whirlwind named Aubrey walks into his life. Aubrey broke up with her terrible dominating boy friend who a!ways made her feel inadequate , incapable and small. The only thing he was good at was Finances. Aubrey needs money to pay her rent and other things so she decides to pawn her grandmother's antique bracelet. When she meet Sundar her whole world changes. He helps her with her problem and gives her a job as well. As they become closer their attraction flares hot. There are so many wonderful thoughtful moments in the story UT some of the best are the funny ones. I found myself laughing out loud so many times. I really enjoyed the story and the characters. High!y recommend I don't think you'll regret it🌟🔥💖🔥💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥💖🔥💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟

Perfectly adaquate. Sexual tension is resolved earlier than I might like, but the characters have some chemistry and clear personalities, they have functional relationships with other characters, and the stakes ramp up throughout the story.

I would prefer if the naga was more...snakey in the sack. No sensual undulations? No extreme restraint in his coils? No hemipenes? That being said, I'm glad they kept his snakey face instead of just having a human torso and snake tail instead of legs.

I wanted a little more spice as this was a slowish burn. Sundar was also kind of cold at times and it made my heart squeeze for Aubrey. Overall, though, I enjoyed this story. The miscommunication trope just isn't my favorite, especially if it turns the hero into an ass.

This was so sweet. I enjoyed Sunder and Aubrey together. Nalini I hated. Mrs. B was a fun character, and so was Maggie. I love how Sunder and Aubrey dance around each other at first.

I didn’t know I needed an overly possessive snake guy who wraps his tail around me in my life, but I guess I do.

Bound to the Naga is a standalone novel in The Monster Mates collection by author Ivy Sparks and honestly, it’s quite charming.

Desperate for money, our main character, Aubrey, goes to a strange pawn shop owned by the naga Sundar to trade in her grandmother’s bracelet. After she fails to meet Sundar’s financial demands, she agrees to work for him for 5 weeks to pay off the loan and get her bracelet back. While Sundar is instantly smitten the moment Aubrey walks through the door, Aubrey is very curious about the massive snake man, mutual attraction is inevitably sparked.

Characterisation is done well in this book. Aubrey is your classic whirlwind mess of a gal. Gold of heart, hurt by people in her past and you know she has like 5 pizza boxes and an overdue library book from high school hidden under her bed.. Sundar is your classic academic type nerdy guy. He loves everything in his pawn shop, from the magical to the mundane and is fussy and precise. While Aubrey has that fiery spark, Sundar is nervous, shy and awkward. Until they get it on.

Whiplash. Who knew that behind his little shirts and vests Sundar becomes a literal beast, commanding, dominating and strong, the exact kind of guy you’d say “Yes Sir” to with no irony whatsoever. The transition alone is hot as hell, and once you learn what his snake-like movements actually mean, he’s been claiming Aubrey as his the whole time. I will say this is where Aubrey gets left behind a little as a character. All the attention seems to be placed on what Sundar is doing and for self insertion is absolutely a-ok in my book. As long as Aubrey is enjoying herself which she really, really is.

Plotwise, it’s light but enjoyable. There's miscommunication, evil exes to stand up to, a ride or die bestie and a splattering of myth and magic. We go more into Sundar’s past as a temple guardian, and where his fascination with artifacts comes from. The “road trip” scene was a lot of fun and I don’t know whether I’ll be able to look at a gummy worm again without remembering this book.

It’s satisfying to see Aubrey grow in confidence while working and falling in love with Sundar. She gets her own passion for the antiquities and realises her self-worth.

My only complaint is the imbalance of content between our two main characters. There is so much more about Sundar, even during the spicy scenes. Aubrey is present and important but lacking somehow. She doesn’t have her own dreams, her own goals, but then that oppressive need to just survive would justify that. Sundar steps in and solves all her problems, like he himself is the answer to her prayers. I mean, I guess I would be screaming god’s name with him too, so fair game.

Definitely would bother with “Bound to the Naga”, it’s well written, the spice is mild-to moderate but enough to bite that bottom lip and at the end of it all, a satisfying conclusion.

I have feelings...and their not good.

I almost rage DNFed this book 20 pages in because I wanted to punch the male lead. However, I prevailed...only to quit at page 51 aka 21% in. On the very rare occasions I DNF a book, especially less than 50% in I usually don't leave a review...however I need to rant review on exactly why I dropped this book so quickly. Mild spoilers ahead, but nothing we don't know from the blurb.

He's insulted that the female lead is wary of pawn shop owners than proceeds to 1. Give her a much lower price than he knows the bracelet is worth bc "he's worried he'll never see her again" 2. Give her only 30 days instead of his usual 90 days as "he wants to see her again sooner" and 3. Doubles the interest from 5% to 10% because he didn't like her assuming he'd give her a bad offer like most pawn shop owners....even though he did exactly that.

I can't describe how utterly unattractive this male lead is right now because he acknowledges multiple times in his head how he can sense how desperate and reluctant she is to part with something she cherishes, AND that the money he gives her isn't what it's worth, but goes through with the contract anyway.

He actually sums up what an ass he is himself
"I nod. Thirty days. I gave her thirty days, when I usually offer ninety. And a higher interest rate than normal, all because her assumptions about pawnbrokers pricked my pride. Now, watching her try to maintain her brave face while clearly worried about meeting the deadline, I feel like a complete serpent."

He proceeds to let her walk right out the door without fixing his wrongs after SHE THANKS HIM FOR BEING NICE

THEN in a month when she's $300 short of the original $1,000 (plus $100 interest) and BEGS for an extension clearly upset and desperate instead of admitting that he gave her an unfair deal he scoffs saying "A deal is a deal" and “You humans. So attached to these physical reminders of your short lives.”
The ATTITUDE?? The lack of guilt and the fact that he was fully thinking it would be better to just "end the fascination here," —meaning he'd keep the bracelet after only giving her a pittance of its worth— before he offered her the "new deal"

Honestly, if he'd given her a fair shake in the beginning I would've been thrilled at the new deal of 5 weeks of work (with a wage) in exchange for the bracelet, it would've showed compassion and kindness. But now any relationship that comes of this is built on manipulation and lies, on him knowingly taking advantage of her bad situation and attachment to THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM BRACELET FROM HER DEAD GRANDMA.

I am so mad at the author right now and feel betrayed as this was not a male lead I expected after reading the first book in the series.

Gleeful Goblin Review: Having read this author before I pretty much knew I was going to dig this story. The author has a gift for plucky, relatable FMC's. Or that could just be me as a broke millennial in late stage capitalism, who can say? In this case, our FMC is living that 'broke millennial who feels like she's faking being an adult' life and had to pawn a precious family heirloom in our MMC's pawnshop. Since our MMC is a naga his shop isn't your typical coins, jewelry, and electronics oh no. This shop is like a mini Warehouse 13!: “So…” she begins, seemingly gathering courage. “What’s the deal with nagas? Do you all tend to run shops, or is that just your thing?” I smile, despite myself. “No. Though we do tend toward… collecting.” I gesture at the items around us. “We’re naturally drawn to objects of value or power. Some nagas become museum curators, others antiquities dealers. I simply prefer a more direct approach.” “Dealing with desperate people pawning their precious family heirlooms?” The words are bitter, but Aubrey’s tone is light, almost teasing. “Among other things.” I count out her money, hyperaware of how her eyes follow the movement of my hands. The bills seem insufficient somehow, empty paper in exchange for something that clearly means so much to her. Regardless, I slide the stack of money across the counter, watching as she tucks it away. “There are the usual collectibles and similar fare, but I also handle a great deal of magical, cursed, and haunted objects as well.” “Yeah, I noticed.” She glances around the shop again, this time with more genuine curiosity. “So, your magical items are, like, really magical, not just stage-show stuff?” “Of course.” I find myself warming to her interest, my tail shifting to a more relaxed position. “That compass in the display case? It points to whatever it is you’ve lost, though it is known to interpret what is ‘lost’ in a rather ironic fashion. The cursed deck of cards beside it shuffles itself, but it’s notorious for cheating at solitaire. And that bookmark—” I nod toward a delicate silver piece on the counter, “—can summarize the boring parts of any book you’re reading.” She laughs, the sound bright and unexpected. “You’re joking about the deck of cards.” “I never take cursed objects lightly.” “Says the man with a Furby casually on display.”

I felt like this book was a really great blend of magical realism with monsters among us and fantastical pawnshops but also a sizzling romance that definitely had me wrapped up in it until the end. 5/5 Stars.

Aubrey is a young woman who is in a slump. She has a job but times are a bit slow and tough. Her friend and roommate suggests she pawn something. She has only one item to pawn her grandmothers bracelet. It's either that or go on the black market and give a kidney. So off she goes. She is floored when she enters. So much stuff. Then she meets the owner.
Sundar owns The Golden Scale Pawn Shop. He is a naga. When she shows him the bracelet he senses that it's old and has magic albeit weak magic probably protection on it. He senses she doesn't want to pawn it. It brings up his instincts of being a guardian and protector of treasures. He is intriged by her also. She doesn't look at him in fear or revulsion.
Mrs. Brindlewood an old dragon comes in after Aubrey is there and makes some comments to him. In a month Aubrey returns but she doesn't have the whole thousand. Mrs. Brindlewood has come in ahead of her and when she sees her heads to the back room. She has made certain comments to Sundar about his attraction to her. When he finally tells Aubrey there is a way to buy back her bracelet. He hires her at a very fair wage. Mrs Brindlewood stayed and has come foreward to help him reposition some of his more dangerous treasures. After making more comments she departs.
Aubrey starts work in the pawn shop and is learning so much about the merchandise and it's magic. Then one day Sundar's ex comes in and tries to make Aubrey feel demeaned and less. But Aubrey gives as good as she gets.
Things are going well between her and Sundar until it doesn't. She isn't sure why he's changed but she is starting to feel all the doubts that her ex instilled in her. Her best friend and room mate, Maggie, tries to get her to understand what is going on. After all someone who is working at making an app for human/monster date/mates knows what she is talking about. Things become intense until Sundar's ex returns and kidnaps Aubrey. Will Sundar get his head on straight and make it in time to save Aubrey?
A fascinating story of two people with certain issues that can interfer with true love.

Aubrey’s (h) life is falling apart. Her bills are overdue, her job’s barely hanging on, and pawning her grandmother’s bracelet feels like hitting rock bottom. Desperation leads her to The Golden Scale, a pawn shop owned by Sundar (H), a naga who’s more coiled muscle and ancient magic than he is customer service charm. When she can’t buy the bracelet back in time, he offers her a deal: five weeks working in his shop to pay off the debt.

What starts as a reluctant arrangement quickly tangles into something deeper. Between cursed antiques, nosy half-dragons, and a toaster that offers unsolicited life advice, Aubrey and Sundar are drawn together by more than attraction. But centuries of tradition and magic aren’t easy to ignore, and when a venomous ex kidnaps Aubrey, everything comes to a breaking point.

Aubrey grows from someone weighed down by insecurity and emotional manipulation into a woman who speaks her truth and demands the respect she deserves. Sundar transforms from a tradition-bound guardian into a partner who embraces vulnerability and chooses love over legacy. Their bond becomes something strong and steady, rooted in emotional honesty and trust.

A steamy naga-human, emotional romance, exploring love, connection, self-worth, growth, vulnerability, transformation, found family, agency, balance, protection, control, and letting go of the past. It’s about letting go of the stories you’ve been told about your worth and writing something new, one stubborn, enchanted pawn ticket at a time.

Even though I tend to prefer duet-style narration for audiobooks, Azalea Blau’s performance was genuinely impressive. Her voices were distinct and consistent, with accents that stayed steady and characters that felt alive. Emotional moments hit hard, the spicy scenes delivered, and the narration added to the experience.

🎵 Still Aaliyah's fault 🎵

Probably my favorite of this series! Aubrey (Human lady) is a down on her luck millennial looking to temporarily pawn a family heirloom at Sundar's (Giant Snake gentleman) eclectic pawn shop full of magical and cursed items. I think what I liked most about this one is that both of the leads have anxiety and are equally silly about the mutual pining happening. Fun, quick, & sweet!

As per usual, spoilers cut for spoilering, grumbling, & general sauciness:

★★★★☆

One star because Sundar too decent, oui.
This man had no right being so well-mannered, so calm, and still that attractive. A naga who could crush mountains but instead moves soft, speaks softer, and looks at you like you’re peace itself. Respectful, protective, and smooth. The kind of monster you trust to hold you, not hurt you.

Second star for the balance between heat and heart.
I’ve read Kiss of the Basilisk — pure fire. I’ve read Guarded by the Snake — heart and heat in one. Bound to the Naga finds the middle ground. It’s hot enough to keep you fanning yourself, but gentle enough to make you sigh. Not too wild, not too tame. Just right.

Third star for the writing.
Clean, confident, and never once dragging. Ivy Sparks wrote this with the same control as her naga — nothing overdone, just steady, smooth storytelling. I read it in one evening, straight through.

Fourth star because love like that does stick.
He could have lived forever, but he chose a human life with her instead. Tell me that not love. That alone earn the final star.

Why not five?
Because I greedy, oui. I wanted more story, more backstory, more heat. The book sweet, but too short. Still, for what it was, it deliver.

I really enjoyed this book, up until the last 15%. It was cozy, cute, just the perfect palate cleanser between more dramatic books.

The drama was entirely emotional and character-driven, up until the last 15%, whereupon suddenly a was thrown into the mix, dramatically raising the stakes, feeling EXTREMELY out of place in what had previously been a low stakes novel. It really threw me for a loop, and I found myself going "wtf" for the last bit of the novel.

Other than that, my only complaint was the sex scenes. Dude is a naga, a snake person, you would expect him to fuck like a snake- sensuous, slow, serpentine hips, lots of coiling, all that. Instead, we got a naga who fucks like a werewolf, all hard, rapid thrusting that repeatedly knocks the bed against the wall. Huge disappointment. And he only uses his tail in bed a little, and just uses it to hold her legs open??? WHERE'S THE COILING??

Also, negative points for no hemipenes. A snake man with only one penis is an abomination.

Wow, this was such a solid, well-written, and endearing monster romance! I've always had a fondness for Naga, and Sundar is the poster child for the perfect snakefolk love interest - mysterious, a bit broody, but a true cinnamon roll behind it all. The themes of an ancient, powerful being finding comfort and purpose in simple joys of humanity was wonderful. It's very predictable, no surprises here, but it's in no way unsatisfying.

There actually isn't a ton of spice here - though there is some for those who want it. I love monster romances that are more relationship-driven, creating complex, endearing characters that you can truly root for. Plus, I LOVE the theme of Sundar running a pawn shop, one that contrasts the typical antiques and collectibles of human society with rare, magical artifacts.

This is genuinely one of the best monster romances I have ever read. Simple, solid, yet so well-written.

📖 Bookish Thoughts:
This was such a low angst cozy monster romance! I haven’t read many Naga romances, but Bound to the Naga is officially my favorite. Sundar was so smitten with Aubrey—even when he was deep in denial—and I loved how tender he was beneath all that possessiveness and grumpiness.

Aubrey totally broke my heart when she had to pawn her grandma’s bracelet 😭 and don’t even get me started on her trash ex! But what I adored most? No third act breakup. The spice? 🔥🔥🔥🔥

💚 Read if you love:
• Cozy Monster Romance
• FMC hot mess but sweetheart vibes
• Possessive MMC (with a powerful tail 🐍)
• Forced Proximity
• Boss/Employee tension

🎙️ Narration Style: Solo
🎧 Audio Score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Cute cozy monster romance. It wasn’t perfect, but it was ok.

I liked the mmc’s careful detail oriented personality. HOWEVER… there were parts in the story where I really wondered at the audacity of this snake.

He hornswaggled the fmc from the start with that shady deal with her grandma’s bracelet. I mean, I get wanting to see the fmc again, but it was a shitty way of going about it.

She figures it out and is hurt by it. Then later on he starts being cold to her again because of reasons, and I was like, this dude right here. Highhhhh maintenance.

Also, ain’t no way Mr Snek would have fit in a Corolla, much less the front passenger seat. He didn’t even have a shop van or something that could have been parked out back for special situations like the one in the story? Even if he didn’t drive, he could still have one just in case.

All in all, it’s best to not think too much when reading this one.

If there is one thing MFC Aubrey doesn’t want to do is go back home to her parents, and with her half of the rent due in five days the future is looking bleak.
When her roommate Maggie suggests a nearby pawn shop for the short term she decides to go for it with her grandmothers bracelet, a very special bracelet whose secrets Aubrey is unaware of.
Entering the Golden Scale pawn shop the next day and meeting it’s owner MMC Sundar, a very handsome Naga, gets her libido working in overtime and an entertaining monster romance begins.
Bound to the Naga brings humor, spice, fated mates, angst, magic, some drama from his ex, and nice writing combining into a delicious monstrous romp of a read. HEA.

I don't like snakes but I do like nagas and this was a good naga read although there were parts that had me scratching my head. How does a over seven feet tall naga fit inside a little Corolla?? The ex naga girlfriend showing up suddenly without a reason and the dragon woman showing up unexpectedly.all had me thinking why ??? The story wasn't the best and there seemed to be fillings that really didn't add to the story except to make it a little longer. The naga being centuries old and just now finding his true mate made me give pause and wonder why authors choose to make these nonhuman beings so old and their human true mates so young, why can't the nonhumans be a little younger than centuries old???

This is book two in this series and features Aubrey and Sundar the Naga. Aubrey finds herself in the situation where she has to pawn her grandmother's bracelet. But in so doing, finds herself having to work for the owner of the shop - Sundar.
This story had all the humour I love, angst, emotions, hear and an 'Ex, only not hers! Thoroughly enjoyed and need to add more books from this author to my ever, growing library. :D

Aubrey is in need of funds for her half of the rent so she does the unthinkably and takes her grandmas bracelet to a pawnshop. Sundar is the naga owner.
There is almost an instant connection and he sets terms for him to see her again soon. Which will turn into a new contract where she is working with him.
Working in a pawnshop is one thing but it’s a magical one. So there is some training that makes things get close and fast. Then things get steamy. They both have some things to work out but do they ever get them figured out.

Ivy Sparks has done it again. Another monster romance that I loved! The narration was great, and the story was so wholesome. I loved the relationship that was built between Aubrey and Sundar, the sexy brooding Naga and the millennial just doing her best and coming into her own. I would highly recommend this book if you enjoy monster/human relationships, spice, and HEAs. I know that I will definitely be keeping an eye out for Spark's next standalone monster romance novel. She has yet to disappoint.

Light and Romantic Monster Romance

Bound to the Naga feels like you're reading a Harlequin novel with the heat turned up to medium. 😍 The hot-mess FMC is relatable, and the sexy Naga shop-keeper MMC is definitely swoon-worthy, but the well-written and timed jalapeño-level spice is what keeps you reading. I easily read this book in one sitting and would definitely read it again. If you're looking for a book to use to dip your toes into monster-spice, this book or the other 2 in the series so far would be great diving boards.

I ate this up in no time! I was cute and fun and a little different. It lacked a bit of backstory as far as the naga ex was concerned, I didn’t totally understand her need for him? Was it to be with her or to just be a guardian. I also didn’t super understand the bracelet thing - at first I thought she was a hidden nymph, then I’d just talks about protection.. then eventually the ring “binds souls” like.. she’ll live endlessly like him? Or he’ll live humanly? Either way, these were minor confusions, I still really enjoyed the read :)

Okay so I now have an obsession with naga men.....? Or more specifically Sundar. This was such a sweet romantic monster story.

“Aubrey,” he whispers, trailing hot, wet kisses down my neck. “Let me worship you the way you deserve. Let me treat you properly, the way a goddess should be treated.”

description

The plot was decent but the story was mainly around the growing relationship between Sundar and Aubrey which I didn't mind at all. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this author!

Sweet

This was a cute, sweet, cozy romance with a little spice (minor size difference and only two scenes actually played out, one from each pov, and sadly he only had one, unlike snakes. And one very quick foreplay scene.) There was a lot of emotions, mutual pining and stolen glances, evil exes that only lasted 5 minutes each, lol. So, not super dramatic, just a lot of domestic, cozy feels, and I absolutely adore her friend, Maggie. Can't wait to see more of her 🥰
