“Love’s Calling” is Elizabeth Griffin’s remarkable journey to self-discovery, from the lonely, rebellious and self-destructively seductive 20-something setting out on her own for realms unknown, to the humbled and spiritually awakened woman she is now. I felt touched and deeply inspired by the courageous, raw sharing of her humanness and her gradual awakening to God’s presence. The book is an exquisite piece of literary artwork, beautifully written throughout, with a focus on emotional subtleties and sensory details. It is rare, I think, that a spiritual book is so fully and honestly human; the spiritual discoveries she makes are blended in so gently and gradually with her life story that readers may be surprised to discover, two-thirds of the way through, that it’s actually a spiritual book! One element that’s braided throughout is the author’s deep love for all things Italian – she moved to Rome in her late-20s and fell in love with the country and its culture, not to mention a handsome man. The text is generously sprinkled with Italian phrases, each of which comes with an English pronunciation guide, so we travel with her not only through the Italian countryside but into the language, and it’s a joy to savor juicy tidbits of Italiano under this author’s skillful guidance. I was profoundly moved by this book. Thank you, Elizabeth Griffin; I feel much enriched for having your shared your journey!
