Debts must be paid, even ones that you don’t realize you‘ve accrued. Miko has gone back to save Hana, with Mitsue and Rom in tow, putting her directly in the path of a creature that wants what it’s owed. But that price is very high and avoiding it, well, that might be higher still…

Mieruko-chan is one of those rare series that I think actually got better when it decided to incorporate some long form storytelling into what was basically ‘horror movie imagery with groping baked in’ before.

This shrine storyline has been going for some time now, with Miko’s protectors showing up to save her three times and then revealing themselves to be less than altruistic after they’ve upheld their end of a bargain that Miko didn’t realize she was making.

And the way this has secretly been threaded throughout the volumes is pretty spectacular. Hana’s very desirable energy that was bringing all the spirits to her yard now suddenly becomes crystal clear.

We get a ton of flashbacks, as it turns out that the very shady Rom and the elderly fortune-teller Mitsue have a surprising history together (which culminates in one pretty effective parting shot for this volume that is a nicely terrifying cliffhanger that finally lays out the stakes).

Their dynamic works well - Rom has the power, but lacks the experience and is a total snake oil salesman in addition to his abilities. Mitsue has an overabundance of caution, which blunts the effectiveness of her years of experience. They make up for one another’s deficiencies when they aren’t at each other’s throats.

Miko gets very little to do, honestly, but that’s fine because what she does do involves her doing what she does best and trying to make things right via her methods. Miko has it rough, we know this, as her abilities let her see things, but that doesn’t mean she can do anything about them.

Her desire to be there for Hana puts Miko in phenomenal danger and that makes for a very tense volume. She’s very much in over her head, heroine of the story or no, and watching as the bell very nearly tolls for her is gripping. Not that the actual outcome is any better.

Speaking of, I love the way this story portrays the unknowable. The atmosphere is nearly Lovecraftian, minus the fact that nobody goes mad just from interacting with the spirits here. Actually, this particular section reminds me of nothing less than survival horror classic Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly and that game’s a horror masterpiece so I mean the highest of praise there.

On the downside, this is nothing but move and countermove and preparation thereof. I know that manga loves to draw these things out, and I would in no way say I was bored, but this is a whole volume about story that is not getting resolved until next time out.

But that’s a small poke at a great volume of a series that started small and grew big and showed that it actually knew how to handle the change. I don’t always thing this change is necessary, but when it’s done right it makes for something special and this one gets it right.

4 stars - the story parcels itself out very well and the way it draws in the threads it’s been sprinkling throughout is spot on. Minus the lack of an immediate resolution, this is a very strong volume.

This volume becomes very action heavy.

Mieruko goes up to the mountain with Rom and her teacher to finally confront what's up there. We learn secrets here, who one of the creatures is in the past life, and what happened. This creates a new dynamic for Rom and the teacher, while also letting Mieruko shine in both a disgusting and scary scene.

Overall, still great stuff. With had a bit more comedy though again. A 4 out of 5.

I feel like the series has gained so much more depth since adding a cohesive story arc and greater stakes for each character. This volume introduced some back history for certain characters and hints at greater structure to the spirits and spiritualism in this world. I really love this new view.

Decided that while I wasn't that into the one storyline, because I much more prefer seeing our girl try to ignore monsters/ghosts + learn to handle that over this. But now I read this volume? I need more of that storyline! Haha, there was so much awesomeness happening and dang our girl was brave, I would have just ran away so hard if that happened to me. I also love love the backstories on Godmother, her master, and Romm. I still am not a 100% fan of Romm but I can see he is not a bad person. He is just odd. XD And that last panel in this volume. WOW! Yes!
I will read more of this one tomorrow, I got 7, 8, and 9 to read~

This short and very straightforward Volume has to deal completely with Miko, Mitsue, and Rom going to the hidden temple in the woods, both their path there and the beginning of the events during. Rom has brought along Lambun, one of Hana's prized stuffed animals, which is imbued with some of her extremely powerful mana. That mana is the key to finding the temple. Once there, Mitsue and Rom work to try to free Miko from her debt to the two crazy wolf girls, while she must endure ignoring one of the largest and ugliest monsters we've seen in the manga so far.
We get quite a bit of the backstory about how Mitsue raised Rom, as well as how Mitsue came to all this spiritual stuff. At the end, Rom claims the bell that was meant for him when he made a wish there as a child, and Mitsue must confront her master, Towako Oka, who has become one of the temple's Wolf girl guardians.
Volume 7 should be a lot of fighting and hopefully some more lore.
I am really enjoying this very unique manga.

Recommend. This one is still going well.

To face a god

Rom, Mitsue, and Miko make their way back to the shrine of the mountain god that saved them from the abomination that threatened Hana before where Miko must play the part of bait so the trio can solve the problem she and Hana have been having. This leads to more flashbacks (especially between Rom and Mitsue) and potentially a reveal as to at least one of the shrine spirits that have helped Miko and Hana before or perhaps the mountain god themselves. We also see the god of the mountain for what it really is (it wasn't really their final form) as spiritualists unite to face the stronger opponent.

Don't worry Hana fans for although she is not around for all the action (she wouldn't have seen much anyway) she still shows up for the bonus story at the end of the volume. :)

It Took Some Work -- Reviewing 7 Books I Read in July || July Wrap Up

Ahhhhh I’m loving this series and every time the story deepens, I get even more excited for where things will go next. The author did sort of use a certain twist again, which I think made it not be as impactful, but I’m so intrigued to see more around this new character and what their role will be moving forward.

Once again stunning art, lovely plot, bittersweet moments and characters. I read this around non-manga readers including my mom and sisters, and I had to sheild it from them a couple of times so that they wouldn't be traumatized (lightweights to horror ;) ) but other than that I flew through this one.

Oh also, the big fight scene at the end. Usually in mangas especially more-cultured ones if you know what I mean I skip/skim through the fight scenes because I never feel like I truly get them and all the details & actions going on, but this one seemed to sink in a bit more and make sense a bit more so I do still feel confident moving forward.
Which is cool definitely.

The thrilling nearly-final act to the “Godmother, Weird Magician Guy, and Cursed Shrine” story arc! (The actual conclusion comes in the next volume.) This series continues to be a lot of fun, but this volume felt a little rushed. Backstories are presented, characters are introduced, there are a bunch of action scenes, and then we’re whisked back to the present before we really know who all these people are and what the hell is going on. Fairly satisfying ending to this part, but I wish it had gone on for one more volume to let us get to know the characters and understand how everything connects.

Miko's haunting from the creepy shrine spirits comes to a head as she, Rom, and Mitsue travel up the mountain to confront the super spooky things... and somehow this turns into a whole tragic backstory moment for Mitsue and Rom involving Mitsue's mentor...

I dunno, just when it looks like we'll get some answers, 50 more questions pop up. What is that thing? What does it want? Why is it calling to Miko? Why did it call to Rom? What happens if they accept? What happens if they refuse?

Five stars because this volume increased the hype and plot points of this series. This series is simple. It doesn’t attract a lot of fans. But if you’re interested in spirits and all that fun stuff in manga, this is a good fictional series you can get into. It all has the potatoes and meat that you would normally see in Disney’s Halloween television series, movies, etc. Manga is well-put together and thought out. 😁

Volume 6 adds not only more incredibly creepily designed monsters in this volume — no seriously, it's to where I have no idea how Miko doesn't faint on sight — but gets into more backstory between the only supernatural powered people Miko knows.

Everything became really clear on the final page and because of such, it opened the door deeper into this mystery about the shrine and even the ghosts themselves.

An ordinary girl who can see terrible things.... In this volume, her little brother seemed to have special power like his sis altought it didn't give much details but Yuria talked about it.The last picture gave me two suspicious end about Romm, I just need to wait until the next episode will be released uu

This series is so much fun. I think I really like stories where the main character sees spirits; there are so many avenues to take.

I do want to know more about who that woman was that Romm wanted to save. And I was worried that the series would culminate with this event.

But I think there is more to see!

I hope Miko learns some skills to vanquish the spirits!

A really solid volume. We get a lot of back story here for several characters. The volume focuses on one major battle and the cliffhanger was so good. This series has become one that I look forward to. The monster art is fantastic. There are some genuienly creepy designs. Very excited for volume 7.

Fascinating twist to the story revealed

I'm really enjoying this series, it has the perfect amount of horror and creep factor. The story is very interesting and they don't bother explaining everything because they don't need to. Not understanding what's going on is half of the story itself as you journey with Miko. It's really a binge worthy series!

A delicious scoop of mythology reveals the relationships between various side characters as it sets up the price to be paid for the protection the God of the Mountain has given Miko in past volumes. I only wish the book wasn't so short! Give me more now!

The story is getting more adventurous and action like, but I also feels like it's getting to a more steady spot in the excitement, but still left un answered in a lot of things in what feels like a very loose mystery.

Things are definitely coming to a head, and we are starting to see fallout from Miko’s story and her involvement with Mitsue and Rom, this is so interesting to watch! This would make for an excellent horror movie I must say.
