An interesting take on the omegaverse/shifter genres, but it needed way more development. I probably would've liked this book if it had either worked on the lore more, OR focused on the characters and their relationships more. As it was, it felt rushed (instalust, instalove) and all of the characters felt bland and lacking in personalities. There's a mystery there, but not a single one of them wondered why both her parents died of the same thing a few months apart.

Also, I really didn't give two shits about Mike after his first (cheater) chapter. He could've died right then and not really affected the outcome of the story.

Ahggg I can't wait for the next book

World building 🌍🌍🌍🌍

Angst 😬😬😬😬
Smut 🌶️🌶️🌶️

For once a shifter universe book where you can tell the MMCs apart!

The story starts with the FMC who knows nothing about shifters or supes at all.

Turns out her fiance is a vampyr, and she's an omega.

Her alphas are super sweet ❤️

And the underlying plot...wtf is Ezra on?! I cannot wait to find out!

❗ I received this ARC completely free and I'm happy to provide a review

Marlowe was raised human and finds out she’s a secret shifter. Not just any secret shifter, but an extinct Omega who unlocks the lost power of changing into a wolf. We also find out later that she unlocks the power of flying for vampires and she’s also the Promised One.

There are a lot of POVs here, including a few with Mike the Vampire. Mike’s great at being the perfect fiancé, but it turns out he’s actually a psychopathic vampire. Mike’s only failing was not locking down Marlowe sooner, and also letting her go to a shifter town alone, despite knowing she was super special. She was all on board with Mike until she found out he had a harem of vampire groupies, but it seems like they could have worked that out if he’d been honest with her.

It turns out that shifter society is super misogynistic, so men keep trying to rape Marlowe. Vampire society is no better… they also want to rape Marlowe.

Mates:
Nolan the mayor
Cam the construction company owner
Elias the attorney
Archer the biology professor
Julian the boxer who gets added in the last chapter

Marlowe has a twin brother who she thinks is dead. He’s alive. It’s very obvious that he’s the mystery wolf. Turns out he works for the Fae King who (checks notes) also wants to rape Marlowe.

Honestly… there was nothing too terribly wrong with this book, but it didn’t really hold my interest. I can’t say I’m invested in the characters or the storyline.

I think the worst thing about this book was how it defied reason that everyone kept this secret from Marlowe. Her mother has to ship her secret pills to keep her from being a shifter, but never tells Marlowe how to get them. Marlowe’s dad knows her mother is dead, but doesn’t reach out to explain the danger or help her get the secret pills. Mike knows she’s on secret pills, and knows he could easily be outed by her family, but doesn’t tell her. Ezra is over there faking his own death, murdering his parents in a rage over being lied to, hoping to bring Marlowe into the fae realm, and even he doesn’t tell her so he can… you know… fulfill their destiny. How does it even make sense to keep such a dangerous secret from her?

As a newcomer to this genre mix, I was excited to see what this new series had to offer. I was not disappointed, this was an enjoyable read. I had the opportunity to read a digital ARC copy and was glad I did it.

A definite spin for me on often retread story elements, werewolves vs. vampires, the world building was fairly complete and consistent.

Some of the character development and interaction seemed a little rushed, which took away from the story a little bit.

The thing I enjoy most about series stories is the feeling of reaching the end of the book and wanting to dive right in to the next one. I certainly had that feeling finishing this novel, and I cannot wait to see where this story goes, especially with the final chapter reveal.

Ever wonder what would happen if a normal woman with modern sensibilities and little tolerance for "alpha male" behavior was plunked into the OV? Well, here you go!

I received an advance review copy for free from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a debut book and, while there are some issues, overall it's a pretty good outing for a first time author.

While the book starts off a little choppy with the way background information is introduced in a very technical this-happened-and-then-this-happened way, just stick with it. I would put this down to being the quirks of a first-time author, and the flow of the prose will improve as the author gains confidence in their writing. The good news about the writing itself: there are very few mistakes (spelling, grammar, misused words) that can often be found with a self-published author and the book starts moving smoothly once the story is established.

“In the Mouth of the Wolf” is an insta-love reverse harem omegaverse. If you’re looking for a romance that builds the relationships first, you’ll want to take a pass on this one. If you love being thrown into the deep end right away and move right on to the spice, you’ll want to try this out. Rest assured that the relationships will be built, but you’ll have to be a little patient with the order of things.

It was often quite funny too:

"Good thinking with the vibrator. Did you know it was invented by a shifter?"

He raised an eyebrow. "Is that right?"

"Human history says a doctor invented it to cure female hysteria, but that was an easy cover for the truth. What female is more in hysterical need of release than an omega in heat?"

And

I walked in and found her on the bed, wrapped up, looking like a swaddled pup in a blanket while watching some movie. "Join my cocoon?"

"Hell yeah, let's metamorphosize, baby."

(Cam and his himbo persona won me over with that scene alone.)

I loved the author calling out the sexism that is often mired in omegaverse worlds.

She rolled her eyes. "So, omegas are just demure little sex toys that men can fuck their aggression out with before they go crazy and shoot up an office building?"

There were a few negatives for me.

1. As the book moved along, especially after the halfway mark, the guys lost their individuality. It’s hard in a reverse harem romance to keep so many characters balanced and individualized. While I don’t think any of the main characters got shafted with time on page (aside from someone who I think will become a main character in the next book, but that makes sense due to when they were introduced), they did blend together after a while. After the halfway point, when the chapters switched to a different POV, I couldn't remember who was telling it. Cam was still pretty separate from the others, but Elias, Nolan, and Archer ran together.

2. There were too many chapters with Mike. I despised every word I had to read from his POV. I understand it was to help with worldbuilding, but at points I just couldn’t deal with it.

Overall, I would recommend this to omegaverse or reverse harem readers, especially if they are looking for actual shifters and more of an urban fantasy kind of world. Fair warning: the book does end on a slight cliffhanger, but nothing that should cause any major issues for readers.

4.5 ⭐️ | 5 🌶️ – Explicit and abundant

I was thrilled to receive an ARC of this debut novel! This fast-paced contemporary paranormal romantasy, with an omegaverse twist, pulls you in and doesn’t let go.

The story follows our 26-year-old FMC, who’s happily living a human life with her devout fiancé—until her father’s death throws her into a hidden world of secrets and shifters. In this universe, shifters can’t transform into their inner wolves, and their jarring ABO social dynamics clash with her feminist human upbringing. Torn between her fiancé and the alphas she encounters, the FMC faces mounting threats as the MMCs fight to protect her and unravel the mystery of her being the last hidden omega.

This novel delivers a tantalizing mix of mystery, world-building, and foreshadowing, sprinkled into a fast-burn romance packed with insta-lust and insta-love. The body betrayal themes at the start are compelling, and the spice level is great, featuring ménage scenes and plenty of knotting.

I enjoyed the short chapters and multiple POVs, which kept the pacing quick and engaging. It’s an addictive, easy read—I devoured it in 48 hours. Between the toe-curling spice, witty banter, and funny contemporary references, there’s so much to enjoy. Be warned: there’s a cliffhanger! I cannot wait for book 2 in what promises to be an exciting new series.

I recieved an advanced copy from the author and am reviewing it voluntarily.

A very fun first book! It's well written, leans towards 'the romance is the plot' but has some intrigue that builds in the back third of the book.

Definitely a love/lust at first sight situation, with the FMC not knowing she's a shifter to start out. Multiple POV's with a focus on the FMC.

Definitely looking forward to the second book and learning more about the world building! Harem is caring and varied, MFC is mature, and spicy is plentiful. Definitely recommend!

Quick read, enjoyable characters. I especially enjoyed the FMC’s humor. Surprise ending, too. I didn’t expect the series to go that direction and am looking forward to the next book! There were a couple moments where I felt the FMC suddenly became too accepting of this world she had previously (and reasonably) been questioning (i.e. it was nbd her alphas killed people?), but overall it was a well-thought out and well-written book.

Tropes: omegaverse, shifters, vampires, why choose, found family, knotting. TW: sexual assault.

FYI I was an ARC reader.

I need the next book ASAP! What Marlowe and her guys are about to face has me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the pace of the story and the building of her pack. Had high hopes for the fiancé only to turn into something evil. I’m most excited to see how Marlowe and her pack welcome in Julian.

Ezra?!! Her brother!!! I want to like him but I have a feeling he’s going to break my heart in the next book.

5/1/2025 - rereading before the release of the next book.

I love finding a new author with a great story! This one was a little different from most of the Omegaverse books I’ve read. Disclaimer: I’m new to the genre, but I’m quickly fixing that.

In this book, Marlowe (FMC) has just discovered that she’s an omega, which causes all kinds of upheaval in her life. Toss in a vampyr ex and four hot alphas. Umm…yes, please.

And that ending?? Can I have the next book now?

I feel the series has significant potential to be five stars . This book was not insta lust but I do feel the character relationships should be developed more for the romance aspect and there were moments. I do think the book should definitely be longer as it seemed rushed . I did enjoy the characters and the lingering mystery subplot but more character/relationship development as well as taking time to unravel the subplot !

3.5 ⭐ rounded to 4. I'm honestly not sure whether I enjoyed this book or not. It did keep me engaged but I'm not sure if I liked it or not. I felt there was too much going on with the vamps and then the brother, and I also didn't particularly enjoy Mike's chapters. I liked Marlow and her pack but the inclusion of the other alpha at the end was unexpected and random. It was different to any other omegaverse I've read but I'm not sure yet whether I'll read the next one.

If this is what we get from a debut novel, sign me up for more! This is a thoroughly engaging paranormal shifter story. We have ABOs but for now, it's more human omega-verse with other supernaturals (like vampires or fae) mixed in this world.

Marlowe is happily engaged to Mike when she is told her estranged father has died. She reluctantly heads to Wisconsin from San Francisco to tie up his loose ends. What she didn't expect was to find out she was a shifter (well non-shifter) and that she had mates. She takes this as well as anticipated. Not. Oops.

On to the potential mates and the main male characters:
🐺 Elias - lawyer and pragmatic
🐺Camden - brash, wears his heart and emotions on his sleeve, worked with Marlowe's father in the construction company they owned.
🐺Nolan - mayor, protective
🐺Archer - professor, helps Marlowe understand what paranormals are through an academic standpoint.
🐺And another mate...

What I didn't like (because it's a me thing really) is we get Mike's POV but I can understand why his POV was included so readers could see his intentions and machinations. Generally I'm not a fan of characters that aren't part of the harem to get a POV as there are already too many voices to keep track of. I really hoped that he was a good guy as he seemed so loving. And maybe he is\was? But the first POV we get is him cheating on her with two women. However, he's not entirely human...in his world this is the norm. Mike does worship Marlowe and "loves" her in his own non-human way as he intends to form his harem around her.

I do have a question whether this is a fated mates story or just because the males got to her first then do they become mates. (as Omegas are rare) Scents do have a role in this world but I'm unsure if they're scent matches or they just smell good to each other.

This does end on a soft cliffhanger as we discover that vampires aren't the only threat. Buckle up buttercups for the next one.

Also being a native San Franciscan, I was chuffed to bits when House of Prime Rib was mentioned. If you know you know.

Character development - 3.5/5 each character is unique and not carbon copies. Each have backstories that aren't just thrown on page but continue to play a part of the story.
World building - 3.5/5 Real cities in the story are pretty accurate and paranormal world is just nicely unfolding. Things are explained well and concisely.
Plot Engaging page turner

Tropes:
- FMC might be that special someone to changing the world
- M F M M M M
- Growly, protective, possessive males
- Discovers she's a shifter
- Unexpected Heat
- Found Family
- Spice level 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
- Multiple POVs
- instalove(ish) to medium burn, I 💘Us are spoken
- (Person of Color representation)
- some ow drama

Some trigger warnings
- Death of a family member
- Cheating by non-harem member
- Kidnap
- Attempted assault

I received a digital ARC of this book for my honest opinion.

A classic story of “I didn’t know I was a shifter” with some family trauma, a crappy ex, and a bigger bad hiding around the corner. That is what you can expect when getting into the world of In the Mouth of the Wolf. Reading this book was so much fun, and for that it lands in a solid 3/5 stars. I do think there are areas that this book could grow in that could have had it going in a 4 or 5/5 star read, but that by no means is a bad rating for me.

The beginning of the book was very refreshing, being that Marlowe did not believe the male main characters instantly nor did she instantly forgive her father for how he left her family. I feel that it is very easy for an author to have the lead forgive and forget in these situations, especially when there are forces outside of their control, but that isn’t how the human brain works. Also, who wouldn’t think it would be a furry sex cult with that kind of introduction. When it comes to the “I didn’t know I was...” I feel like the lead character is always easy to let go of their original world, and I really appreciate how Marlowe holds on to her sense of self throughout the book, even when she doesn’t know what is going on in her body.

When it comes to a 3 star rating I don’t look at those books badly in any way. I had a great time reading this story and am really excited to see where the story will go in the second book. However, there are some aspects of the story that I do think held it back a bit. One of those would be the multiple storylines occurring at the same time within only so many pages. It felt cluttered at times and could make the pacing of the story feel a little rushed. All of this being said, I am so excited to see where the second book takes us and how the pack gets through the rest of these troubles!

This book was actually rather cute, and I say that as someone who reads spicy paranormal romances like they're going out of style. It had that cozy "curl up with a fuzzy blanket and pretend your dating life isn't a trash fire" vibe. Points for that. Gold star. Maybe even a sticker.

BUT.

Let’s talk about the sheer velocity with which our girl launched herself into eternal relationships. Like ma’am, you kissed him once and now it’s “I’d die for you”? Bold. Inspiring, even. Meanwhile I ghost people for texting “hey” with no punctuation.

Also, can we PLEASE talk about the way Julian got yeeted into the harem in the last three pages like the author remembered she left the stove on? Poor guy showed up like, “Hi, I’m hot and mysterious,” and suddenly he's soulbound and calling everyone “my love.” Slow down, buddy. We don’t even know your coffee order.

I’m just saying, this book treated commitment like a TikTok trend—fast, flashy, and questionably thought through.

And look. I know it’s a problem. I KNOW. But I was kind of team Vampire Mike. He had ✨red flags✨, yes. He was giving "gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss," but in that delicious morally gray way I clearly need to unpack with my therapist. Did he probably commit a war crime in 1342? Yes. Did that stop me from swooning? Also yes.

Final thoughts: fun, flirty, and faintly chaotic. Perfect for when you want drama, romance, and to pretend that emotionally intense supernatural boyfriends are the cure to your quarter-life crisis. Just... maybe workshop the pacing next time, yeah?

omegaverse, shifters, reverse harem, oh my! if these genres or tropes appeal to you, then I would say this book is a solid reccomendation. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the story. sometimes you get a book with these aspects and the plot is extraordinarily thin, but not the case here. it was slightly cringe at times, but I think that comes with omegaverse in general.

things I liked:
-fmc is not a weak willed person with no personality of her own. she is a relatively strong character who doesn't let mmcs or other men boss her around.
- the mmcs all had some interesting character growth that felt nice to read
- girlie pop is thrust into a world of unknowns and responds in a somewhat realistic way, neither going into immediate acceptance or absolute stubborn refusal of reality.
- the mmcs seem to all have different personalities that are unique and have fun dynamics
- surprise ending was surprising!

things I didn't like:
- one of the pet names annoyed me
- I would like more worldbuilding/info on the lore of the shifters
- I think the author could do a little more differentiate the voices of the different characters when writing their individual perspectives, or should have gone third person. there were a couple chapters where I had to go back and figure out who was leading the narrative for that chapter because it was not distinct from other narratives/chapters.

I liked the concept of this book and thought that the world building was interesting. Even newcomers to the omegaverse will enjoy reading this. Marlowe is a likeable character and feels different from most FMC who are submissive to a fault. The alphas seem to be well rounded with lives outside of just the pack, though Cam comes off as really aggressive in the beginning which may be off putting.

The addition of the vampyr world building helped add tension and a good mirror to the pack dynamic since the two societies are opposites of each other. The twist at the end is interesting even if it seems a bit forced into the plot when it does come in. Overall, decent read if you are looking to expand your omegaverse library.

This book had potential but the annoying woke writing of a brainwashed 20 something year-old writer truly ruined it.
The times that I had to roll my eyes was infinite. This book was 60% woke annoying crap, 30% weird and 10% good and hot.
Just please someone tell me this is not the future of writing?! Cause if so, not only are movies and TV doomed as they have been and ruined, books will also be so.

This was insta-love/lust. While not having fated mates the FMC starts fucking with the mmc's at only 20% after that it's just lots of smut and little story. It feels like this book had a lot of premise with the storyline but it just got snowed under all the smut (it felt like more than 50% of the book is smut)
The storyline was pretty good and quite unique. I really liked it with the vampyr and the shifter politics but for my taste it was just to much smut to enjoy the story.

This was a truly wonderful book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

Marlowe's world changes completely when her father dies, and danger seems to emerge from all sides.

The author wrote the book in such a way that the world she created gradually becomes clear, but in a way that kept my interest fully engaged.

It's exciting, dark, but also intense, loving, hopeful, and spicy.

I'm feeling generous so this gets 4 stars, but I wouldn't read it again. There are some plot points that won't work for some - a POV from a cheating ex and some what I would call very mild consent issues. I care enough to read the next book.

DNF-ed at 20 pages in. I’m sorry, but the way the FMC finds out she is an OMEGA is at her not in contact for 20+ year fathers attorney’s office where she runs into her “mates” who are DEGRADING & lack any self control? No thank you.
