When Everything Rose Rugged...

Rate this book
What happens when the walls of a Hollywood apartment are traded for the horizons of the open road?

When Everything Rose Rugged… emerges. An intimate, humorous, and poetic memoir about letting go of what you thought you needed to find what truly matters.

When the COVID-19 pandemic closed one door, Nick threw everything he owned into a Los Angeles storage unit and drove through the nearest open window—straight into the unknown. As the miles stretched on, Nick accidentally turns a few week escape into a 14-month odyssey of discovery and transformation. From the first time the Tetons stole his breath (and maybe part of his soul) to off-grid living amongst mangoes and goats in a Caribbean forest, from the vibrant streets of Chicago to the Chihuahuan Desert, and everything in between, Nick’s journey is as much about the places as it is about the lessons they teach.

This isn’t just a story about travel, it’s about learning to stand still in the middle of motion and uncertainty then realizing that sometimes the best path forward is the one that looks unpaved and overgrown. Told with a blend of heartfelt introspection and sharp humor, Nick’s journey is one of embracing the unpredictable, finding beauty in the natural, and learning to laugh when you feel like your world has hit rock bottom. Buckle up for a wild ride through America’s heart accompanied by even wilder emotions.

Buy When Everything Rose Rugged… and become a ghostly passenger—you might just find a little piece of yourself out there, too.

A beautifully written memoir of Nick’s introspective and extrospective experiences while traveling, living life on the road, and being immersed in nature. I’ve been waiting to read this book ever since I learned it was in the making, and I am so impressed with the final version! When reading this book you follow Nick along this crazy journey, moving along the biggest cities to the smallest towns, the most popular national parks, to places you never knew existed. All of these experiences are filled with descriptive landscapes and stories of like-minded individuals. Not only do we get to hear about Nick’s adventure in these amazing places, but the lore and history behind them as well. By reading this book, I learned things I never would have known otherwise, at times in places I’ve been before! The writing in this book is so artful and eloquent and very true to the nature of Nick’s persona. Great job friend, I can’t wait to see what comes next for you!

“Thought patterns create ideas, ideas lead to meaning, meaning turns into a decision, and once a decision is made, action is next in line.”

“What I now had was time and an opportunity to cut ties to obligatory ordinances. In front of me was a chance to embrace time as freedom for the first time in my life.”

“These boots would support my feet through countless adventures in the future, a true staple of mine, as those who know me would come to find.”

“These skyscrapers of nature demanded uncanny attention. Their presence when seen is admired and respected, but stirs an internal yearning to reach out and touch. Instantly, I was in love.”

“Shared silence in magical scenery is cathartic-especially with those who know you best.”

“Modern man lives in excess consumed by materialism that causes humans to stray far off the path of authenticity. These psychological programs feed bullshit on who to be, what’s important, and why we are here.”

“Constant movement and absorption in the unsullied vibrations of nature honed a frequency that civilized routine filters out of modern man. Tapping into this amplified bandwidth I touched my primal spirit- our primal spirit. It is an invisible motor and is the source that inspires human beings to climb an unachievable ladder to immortality.”

“Send me to the mountains. Let me be free forever.”

“Perhaps natural marvels like the Grand Canyon are simply mirrors- a looking glass into our own inherent soul. They are ever changing, always evolving, and never singular. We’re all just a part of it all and the Grand Canyon may be the grandest reminder.”

“I get it. The Tetons changed my life.”

“Life reaches an intense state of vitality in nature’s serene stillness. Immersing oneself in wilderness, even for an instant, lets you touch immortality.”

“Alaska is a wilderness pantheon. It is a bewildering mural so heavenly that I can only justifiably render it as a world of dreams.”

“There is no path until one walks it. You’ll never know what is on the other side of that wall until you step through the door.”
