As fourteen-year-old Simon lies unconscious in hospital, Jason and Sally embark on a journey to find out why.
Entering the abandoned building where Simon emerged, barely alive, the two friends soon discover a series of time portals on each floor, delivering them to unknown realities.
Determined to save their friend, Jason and Sally encounter risks disguised as opportunities, and soon come to realise that there is more to the portals than meets the eye.
Will they uncover the truth of The Restoration Project, before it’s too late?
3.5 rounded to 4 ⭐ An intriguing story with unexplainable events and an enigmatic plot!
Since reading the book description, I was so intrigued that I had to know what Sally, Jason and Simon got into. Whilst Simon lies in a hospital bed, Sally and Jason go back to the place where Simon got injured, to find out what happened!
Here comes the hallucinogenic trip and the unexplainable events I mentioned. The building they start exploring turns out to be something out of the ordinary but they don't have the faintest idea how extraordinary!
And neither does the reader.. whilst I found the descriptions well articulated, there was a lot for my brain to process and picture without any frame of reference and I struggled a bit. I want to think that this was intentional, so the reader would have the same experience as the characters.
As for the characters, although children, I didn't particularly like them, and I found their love-hate relationship a bit detrimental for the story and the dialogues too.
Apart from this, I want to know what happens next, as this first installment in the series left me with more questions than answers and I'm hoping I'll get some in the next book!
If you like a plot that will at the same time intrigue and make your brain sizzle, then give this series a try!
Thanks to the author and Cranthorpe Millner Publisher for a copy and this is my honest opinion.
This is Clive's DEBUT novel as well as being the first book in his 'The Restoration Project' Series.
The first thing I have got to say is an absolutely HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the author Clive Stephens!! I was absolutely mind blown when I had finished this brilliant page turner, went to look at what other books he has written and realised that it is actually his debut book!! What an absolutely EPIC debut novel it is and if THIS is what you can create for your very first book then I just cannot wait to see what on Earth you will come out with next!! I will start by saying that with this book being science fiction based it isn't my usual choice of book so I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about the storyline but I was fascinated by the absolutely stunning and eye catching cover and synopsis and was looking forward to trying it out. I have also been watching 'Stranger Things' so when it mentioned 'time portals' in the synopsis I just had to give it a go! If you are not typically a fan of science fiction books then do not let that put you off, expand your reading genres and give this book a try!! I am very pleased that I did as not only did I enjoy it personally my partner, who is a fan of fantasy and science fiction, loved it! This absolutely fantastic book may be aimed at children and young adults with the age rating Amazon has given being 13-18 but, sadly, at the age of 39 I am no longer classed as a child or even as a young adult but I really enjoyed it as did my 38 year old partner!! I would read it to my 13 year old son Malaki and we would both take turn reading a chapter each. We would both also read it on our own. Malaki was also a big fan of reading it and we are all looking forward to reading more books in this series. The next books in the series are called Variant and Forfeit. Variant is available to purchase now and Forfeit will be published on the 27th January but available to order now. The storyline follows Jason and Sally whose friend Simon is in hospital after entering an abandoned building, disappearing for days then reappearing but unconscious. Jason and Sally return to the building to see if they can find out why Simon is the way he is and what happened to him. However when they get inside they discover much more than they could bargain for and once they are in will they be able to get out themselves or will they end up like Simon? Grab your copy to find out for yourselves and I can promise that you will not regret it. With a storyline ram packed with adventure, danger, time travel, science fiction, vortexes, fantasy, dystopia, drama and a cliff hanger that will leave you wanting more what are you waiting for? Clive's absolutely incredible evocative descriptions will ensure the reader is sucked into the book where they will hear the characters, see the action and characters and feel their heart pounding as they fly through the pages of this incredible adventure! The fact that there is so much going on ensures that there is no chance the reader will be able to put it down so make sure you clear your schedules before starting this book! I devoured it in two sittings and my partner, who usually takes a month to read half a book, managed to read it in just 2 days which is a record for him!! Clive has done an absolutely wonderful job of not only the character building throughout the storyline but also the world building which I just found fascinating which was a first for me as I am not typically a science fiction book fan. Clive's emotive, evocative and fantastic descriptions ensures the reader is sucked into this fantasy world storyline seeing the characters, atmosphere and action come to life right in front of their eyes. His imagery and vivid descriptions really do help create and build this whole new fantasy world which really does come alive in front of you. I found the storyline to be extremely unique and I enjoyed every moment of it!! I really cannot wait to see what 'Variant' brings especially after THAT ending!!
The characters are all complex and multi dimensional with a range of different abilities, personalities, histories and objectives. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them all and am looking forward to meeting them along with others in the next books in this promising new series. It is such a fascinating read and I was completely absorbed throughout. I absolutely LOVE the fact that one of our main protagonists is a strong and kick butt female. Being female myself I always love seeing strong female leads in books and Sally is absolutely brilliant especially seeing her grow in strength from beginning to end! I enjoyed getting to meet all the different characters and the author has done an absolutely brilliant job of weaving the storyline together perfectly ensuring the reader gets the bigger picture. They were all very strong characters with their own unique personalities, flaws, quirks, strengths and weaknesses.
❤️ Overall an action packed, time travelling science fiction adventure💜
In Gambit, we follow Jason and Sally in their endeavours to uncover the truth behind the restoration project.
Their friend, Simon, lays in a hospital bed, unconscious. And in order to find out what happened to him, they must return to the place where it happened, an old abandoned building. But before long, they discover on each floor of the building, there are mysterious time portals. But what do these portals do? Will they take the two children somewhere? Will they survive if they enter the portals? Be sure to pick your copy up to find out.
So all in all, an enjoyable, intriguing read. At it's heart, it's a tale of friendship, and the lengths we will go to in order to help or save our friends.
It's quite the mind bender in parts, and for me, the pace moved along fairly well, in some points, slightly slow, but that's not a negative.
The characters are believable and feel reel, with Jason and Sally's relationship being on the love-hate side of things.
I look forward to the next instalment and to find out what happens next.
Gambit is ultimately a story of friendship and mystery featuring time travel. The writing style made me feel nolstagic of young adult books from my youth - in particular the poetic writing as featured in 'Something wicked this way comes' by Ray Bradbury springs to mind. For example a line from Gambit; 'the three of them had clung to a raft, navigating a passage through the choppy seas of school'.
This languange style works quite successfully at raising horrific tension as the story progresses. 'An icy breeze swriled up from the floor, circling her body tightly and sending chills through to her bones... Anxiety threatened to drown her in sweat, as her insides charged towards panic. But now, suffocation threatened her in spite of the air around her.' It's the type of read that is atmospheric, that really engages you in the moment, although it can make it feel like quite a slow read at points, so its best enjoyed leisurely.
The style is also reminscient of early Stephen King's works, for instance the Gunslinger - with its long descriptive sections, balanced with quick-fire dialogue.
My main critique is that the two main characters Sally and Jason, that are trying to work out the mystery behind Simon's unconscious state, don't seem to get along or relate to each other, which can make the read a bit jarring as they are meant to be working together. But, it doesn't take away from the overall story.
I think fans of Stephen King & Ray Bradbury's style of writing, would enjoy this book, and find it quite a nostalgic read, particularly if reading it as an adult (despite it being a young adult book), so I'm happy to rate it as a 4 star if it was presented to the right audience.
Thank you so much to Cranthorpe Millner for allowing me the opportunity to offer an ARC Review of Gambit!
This fast paced first instalment of a new trilogy is perfect for any YA dystopian lovers, from the off you are feeling for Jason as his friend Simon lays up in critical condition after becoming gravely ill whilst exploring a new building.
Clive’s world building is highly immersive and his descriptions of each scene really helped build full images in my mind - some of the concepts he’s explored in this book were fantastic and really fed my inner sci-fi lover. For example, the way he described the passing through each portal and how massively it affected each of the characters was fascinating.
You do grow attached to the characters depicted, for me I really felt for Sally and even Ki-Tae & Mikey.. we get a good glimpse into their lives and I am interested to learn more about each of them in upcoming books.
I enjoyed this, it’s a great start to what looks like it will be a great series and I am excited to see what happens next, hopeful that Sally & Jason can find the solution to helping their friend Simon.
Gambit is available now & the tour continues with more content creators sharing their thoughts, check out the book tour schedule on my instagram!

This author has a wonderful writing style, with beautiful descriptive passages and well chosen metaphors. The story follows Jason and Sally, as they investigate the mystery of what happened to their friend, after he entered a mysterious building and emerged unconscious. What they discover is engaging and intriguing, and I look forward to book two in the series. An enjoyable read.
A huge thank you to Cranthorpe Miller for having me on this tour!
I dived into Gambit after reading the blurb, and I have really enjoyed getting to know Jason and Sally as they embark on their adventures, trying to uncover the truth behind the restoration project. One of the things I loved most about this book was the strong bond between the characters—especially how much Jason and Sally care for their friend Simon, who is currently laid up in a hospital bed. Their loyalty and concern for him added depth to the story and made their mission feel even more personal.
I also felt a constant tension between Sally and Jason, which made me wonder whether it stemmed from their own dynamic or the stress of Simon’s predicament. This underlying tension kept me engaged, making me question their relationship and how it might evolve throughout the book.
The writing style was immersive and well-crafted, drawing me in from the start. I found the pacing to be steady—not too fast, but never dragging—allowing the plot to progress smoothly while keeping me eager to turn the pages. The mystery surrounding the restoration project unfolded in a way that kept me intrigued, and I appreciated how the story balanced action, character development, and suspense.
Overall, Gambit was an enjoyable and engaging read, with compelling characters and a well-paced narrative. If you love a good adventure filled with mystery, friendship, and intrigue, this is definitely worth picking up!
I can’t lie, I was a little lost at times whilst reading this but maybe that’s intentional. Maybe I was meant to feel as lost and confused as Jason and Sally so I could be fully absorbed into this truly immersive experience with incredible world building that made it feel as if I was there with them. Honestly, it’s so brilliantly described I could see it all unfold before my very eyes. Elephant like masks, the futuristic rooms, the purple vapour, all of it was as if I could just reach out and touch it.
I liked Jason. He was a little annoying at times but that’s kids for you (this is YA) but I wasn’t keen on Sally. The way she went back and forth with how she felt about Jason just made her come across as mean and kind of a bully.
I feel this is a book I may enjoy even more after a second read. Kind of like the film Inception. To understand missed or subtle details.
I loved the ending even though I cried out “Noooooooooo. It can’t end there!” lol so yes, I can’t wait to read book 2 of The Restoration Project, Variant.
One final note, please can I have a shower like that as well as a box I can ask for any meal and it’s there instantly?? 😂
Thank you so much, Clive & LBT for having me the tour. I’m just starting to explore the world of sci-fi/time travel and feel it may be a new favourite genre.
Thank you to LBT for having me on this book review tour and for my gifted copy of this epub
I was really excited to read this book. I loved the cover and I just was really drawn to that.
I got into this book right away. I loved the characters and the suspense this book has to it. We follow sally Jason and Simon. Sally and Jason go back to the place where Simon was injured which is a building and que the weird and extraordinary happening. I mean it’s like really weird and I think the author wanted you to feel lost kinda like the characters or to experience what they were and boy was I ever !!! I was legit so stuck in this book I didn’t know if I would ever get out.
I think for me the best part was the strong connection between the characters especially Sally and Jason and how much they care for Simon like it was really awesome to see cause you don’t see that a lot and I feel like made the mission to find out more personal and which in turn made the book that much better.
I definitely want to know what is gonna happen next. I hope don’t have to wait to long really don’t because I have so many questions that were just left unanswered!!! Please let it be soon for the next book !!!
Being a kid that was born in the 80s, there's nothing more that I love than a kids-on-a-bike adventure that has some wild sci-fi twist, and that's exactly what Gambit is.
GAMBIT is the first book in The Restoration Project YA series by Clive Stephens, and it is a great way to begin the series! The book follows two teens, Jason and Sally, as they try to discover what landed their friend in the hospital. What they discover in a big building is beyond any world they could have ever imagined.
What I liked most about GAMBIT was how atmospheric it is. While the book was a little light on plot, the powerhouse punch that was the setting really captured me from the beginning. Clive describes the setting with such meticulous detail that it was very easy to get a feel for everything. There's a room in this book that feels like the dream of every kid, and I was really excited that Jason and Sally got to experience that (you'll have to read it to see what it is!).
Jason and Sally are also fantastic characters. As these two teens descend deeper into this building, the reader also digs deeper into their backgrounds, their motivations, and their relationship with each other as they experience other worldly time travel.
I binged this in less than an hour, it’s a short book, but it certainly gives a lot. The authors world building was fascinating, I had to know what would be on the next floor! A fantastic start to a new series.
I instantly felt that I knew the characters, really feeling for Jason as he searched for answers to what happened to his friend. Through the authors descriptions, I completely visualised what was occurring, especially the portals and the process on the characters.
Sally and Jason worked well together, despite their love/hate relationship. This demonstrated the strength of their friendship to Simon and the need to help him. I’m excited for book 2 and meeting the characters again.
Gambit hooks you in from the get-go and keeps you wanting to turn the pages to find out what’s going to happen. With their friend, Simon, in the hospital with weird symptoms after entering an empty building currently under construction, Jason and Sally want to find out what happened inside that building. The world-building was very creative, and there was an element of suspense as you didn’t know what the kids were going to encounter as they walked downstairs and around corners. This was a very well done story, and with it being book 1 of a series, I’m looking forward to reading Variant, book 2 of the series. 5 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The premise of this book is good. It was slow to get going though, which isn't necessarily a negative thing, I just often don't prefer that in novels. ~ Ultimately I couldn't get into it. It felt too slow. ~ I do want to know what happened to Simon and how he ended up in the state he did. Despite the fact that the book is only just over 100 pages, I couldn't keep going with it. ~ I'm sure I would've enjoyed it once I got further in, but I struggled to continue with it. • Thank you to NetGalley for sending me an ARC copy of this book.
The plot revolves around Sally, and Jason exploring an abandoned building, which defo gives the story a mysterious and eerie atmosphere. The time travel element is what grabbed my attention— it's also part of the main plot. While the idea of moving forward in time was intriguing, I expected them to be travelling back and observe people going about their day without being noticed I think that made more sense. The plot takes a little time to pick up and I would say it's best to read this book twice to understand more
🎢🔀🤯 Plot Twist
Although there weren’t any major twists, the curiousity was enough to keep the story going.
😖😱🤡 Characters
The characters felt like they were in their own worlds, even though they were physically together, I just felt no conmection. I guess Simon really is the glue. Jason’s eagerness and competitive nature added an interesting dynamic, while Sally initially seemed daring and talkative she lacked depth beyond her reactions.
👣🏄♀️🌊 Flow
The book is written well, but it does take some time to get into it. For me, this feels like a book that would be better understood after reading it again.
🖤❤😘 Romance
There isn't much romance in the story, which might be why the character dynamics feel less emotionally charged.
🌃✨ Imagery
The description of the abandoned churches and the eerie, mysterious settings stood out. The imagery of toxic chemicals and time travel added to the suspenseful mood.
Overall Impression
This book is mysterious and intriguing, especially with the time travel element. However, it lacks emotional depth and character connection. It’s a story you’ll want to read twice to fully grasp.
This book was fine but it wasn't really for me. It's not the author's fault; I just couldn't vibe with it at all. I loved the cover. It caught my eye. The purple is lovely, and it's eye-catching. The book is well written and flows nicely. The descriptions were good. It was written in third person, which worked fine. The setting and world-building were well done. The characters were fine, and I like how they were developed. I would recommend the book. Just because this wasn't for me, doesn't mean it's not for everyone else.
I will start with my regular disclaimer that I am in no way the target audience for a YA novel- far from it. I don’t let this spoil my enjoyment though.
What a great read! Not only time travel, but traveling through different worlds, each one described in intricate detail. Clearly a lot of thought and effort has been put into this story. I felt fully immersed in the story and although the main characters weren’t exactly likeable to begin with, they did grow on me as the story progressed. I really enjoyed this book and am already looking forward to the sequel
Really enjoyed this read! The world building and atmosphere are excellent. I could really picture the tension and stakes. It’s a solid YA novel with suspense, mystery, and a plot that keeps you guessing (sometimes confusingly on purpose, but in a good way). I think the ending is designed to make readers eager for the sequel, and my son, who’s also a YA reader, is already super keen to read it!
Definitely a 4* read – good story, immersive world, and I’ll be reading the sequel when it comes out!
This is a great first novel from Clive Stephens with an intriguing storyline. The author’s clever use of descriptive writing allows the reader to become fully absorbed with the situation that Sally and Jason find themselves in. There’s a warmth that comes from the friendship between the main characters and the story develops at a nice pace. Very much looking forward to book 2.
Not my usual genre to read but enjoyed it. Found it easy to get into straight away and wanted to know what was happening. Liked the character development. Vivid descriptions made it easy to imagine the scenes. Would recommend.
There is a definite sense of foreboding as soon as you start reading this!
A child in hospital after he has been missing for a week, with an unexplainable symptoms. And then his two friends that decide to go back into the building that he went in to see if they can solve the mystery.... what could go wrong?? What they found is truly extraordinary.
@stephenswriter pulls us into this confusing labyrinth of steps and floors and you as the reader systematically explore this with Sally and Jason. I loved that we experienced this as they would, the fear and angst was palpable all the way through. A truly fascinating read that leaves you with so many questions, leading you straight to book two!
