Maya Dawn Fisher is a transgender woman, below-the-knee amputee, writer, and professional procrastinator residing in rural Southwest Virginia. When she’s not dodging deadlines or avoiding adult responsibilities, Maya enjoys unapologetically chain-smoking on the porch, sipping coffee, and yelling at her seven cats to stop plotting against her—one of whom is deaf.

She’s been partnered with the same unlucky woman, Misty, for 20 years, and they’re both still baffled by their teenage daughter’s ability to survive (and thrive) despite their best efforts to mess her up.

Maya’s debut novel, Reborn in Shadows, has been selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress, a milestone that ensures her voice and storytelling will be preserved among the literary record.

Her writing is a mix of humor, heart, and occasional profanity, which she hopes will make you laugh, cry, and possibly question her life choices.

This book is extremely well written, heartfelt, and genuine. The author’s ability to construct perfect imagery allows the reader to be fully immersed in the story. This book is full of raw emotion, with grief, fear, love, and triumph being a few of the key notes. The story itself is very unique and enjoyable and I found it very hard to put down. Looking forward to following this author’s work in the future!

Rural LGBTQIA+ fiction is a severely lacking yet much needed subgenre. Reborn in Shadows weaves a complex tapestry of action, thriller, mystery, romance, and cozy, led by the endearing Miriam. Encountering SWVA through the lens of the transgender POV is a necessary experience in this modern age when it is occasionally taken for granted that the world has become more modern and accepting. Granted, you also get to meet a variety of characters who do live up to the country hospitality standard and show us that there are allies everywhere. There is a lot of heart and soul in this book, the writing of which I do not doubt was a cathartic experience for its author.

Thank you, Maya, for sharing an ARC with me!

a beautiful, touching and heartwarming tale and a very promising debut!

despite not being the type of book I usually find myself reading, "Reborn In Shadows" kept me hooked from the very beginning. all thanks to Miri, the charming protagonist whom I couldn't help but root for!
the characters and their interconnected stories are definitely where this book shines. even though we didn't learn much about some of them, they felt real and distinct, so much so that I became genuinely attached to the small community of Jasper Hill.
and even though at times the ups and downs of small town life, everyday problems and small successes created the illusion of stability and normalcy, tension was ever-present and the reader was constantly reminded that the life Miri had built for herself was under a constant threat, her safe haven dangerously fragile. I would still consider this a cozy read, but be prepared for some stakes and quite a few shivers sent down your spine.

now, time for the fly in the ointment. the author says in the beginning that she's used to telling her stories verbally and I'd say it shows. while this was a really good story, I found the execution of transferring it into written word a bit messy. the sentences felt awkward at times, lacking a smooth flow. the writing style in some fragments felt purely informative and not descriptive enough to paint a picture in the reader's mind. while this would be unnoticeable in a story told verbally, especially by an expressive and charismatic narrator, it felt a bit jarring written down.

nonetheless, this is certainly an author I'll be looking forward to reading more from! most of the issues with this book may very well be attributed to this being a debut. Maya is undoubtedly a great storyteller, so don't hesitate to read "Reborn In Shadows" and support her on her journey, for it might be one to greatness!

many thanks to Maya Fisher for the eARC!

I truly couldn’t believe that this was the author’s first book. The way it’s written was so easy to read that I was able to immerse myself in this story.

As far as the story goes, it was a BELIEVABLE piece. That means a lot to me in fiction like this. It’s a true glimpse into small town life in the LGBTQIA+ community and how much the current generations fight for change. It’s heartbreak, victory, and mystery rolled up into a digestible package that I didn’t want to put down.

The ending? I couldn’t be happier for the characters or more invested in what happens next.

Reborn from the Shadows provided insight, experience and struggles of what it feels like to be alone and different in the world of normality. As I continued to read about Miriam’s journey to truly find herself and her happiness I found so much relatability in my own journey. This book was not in my normal genre of books but I am so glad I was given an opportunity to read this journey to love yourself unapologetically while standing up for what is right. The writing was fast paced and energetic and I couldn’t put the book down as I needed to know what happens next!

Reborn in Shadows: From the Ashes was a book about resilience, love and strength. I laughed and cried and fell in love with the main character Miriam, a transgender amputee with an unapologetic chainsmoking habit.

Miriam finds herself in the witness protection program due to an incident with a powerful crime family andbhas to restart her life over post transition in a small town. She finds love and friends while having to fight off some bigotry with her strong will to stand up for her identity and those like her.

The only reason I really give 4 stars is because there were a few small moments that I felt the over detailed explanations weren't necessary or some part of the plot was being dragged out just a bit longer than needed. But that could be my personal opinion. Overall this story was one my heart will remember. I see Miriam as a hero her strength and dedication to her identity is empowering. She is so well spoken and I only hope that others in the LGBTQ community get a chance to read this story and feel empowered by Miriam's resilience.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to read this book! I’ve known Maya for YEARS and although I knew she had an amazing ability with words I had no clue she was THIS good. This book really took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. The absolute horror of what happens to the MC then the hope that blossoms as they continue on their journey. It was surreal at times to recognize our area in print. She absolutely nailed it. I loved that she didn’t focus on just the negatives of our area (which sadly are many) but that she included in the good parts. There are good people here willing to fight for what is right and she showcased that beautifully. Plus, the love story is AMAZING!!! Omg! I honestly was not expecting that but it was so good! The ending had me texting her begging for the next book! Maya is going to be the next big author! Just yall wait and watch!

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Fisher immediately sets the pace with an intriguing prologue that leaves us wanting more, only to slow down just enough for us to get to know the main character as we slowly see her story unfold before diving back into the suspense. I will guarantee you, there will be plot twists and no, you will not see all of them coming!

Reboen In Shadows is a very good read. At times, I had trouble putting it down. And that, my friends, is one of the signs of great storytelling!

Here's at least one person eagerly awaiting the sequel!

I wanted desperately to like this book.

This book is in severe need of a proper editor:
It’s filled with cringy lines that clearly aren’t meant to be cringy. It’s constantly telling instead of showing. The main characters meet and like half a day later the narrator is saying how in love they are, but there is nothing we actually see to back this up. There are no inside jokes, there’s no history, not even any funny stories to speak of. Every character gets info dumped about. How does this narrator, who isn’t generally written as omniscient, know the exact height of every character in feet and inches. The narrator describes every new character like a smutty reading of their drivers license. There is constant info dumping and rambling about topics that have never been brought up before and never get brought up again. This would be okay if it were a character info dumping to another, but it’s not. It’s the narrator info dumping to the reader. The book is very clearly a self-insert by the author, which can have value in a lot of ways but has to be done very carefully or it can feel awkward to read.

I’m 99% sure the cover art is AI generated. It’s amazingly detailed in some places but also doesn’t make sense in others.
The main character Miriam is described as voluptuous. The person on the cover doesn’t quite fit that description. Miriam is described as a below the knee amputee, but the person on the cover is an above the knee amputee. Lastly, just to the realism point, the skinny jeans the character is wearing are way too tight and there is no way she could have gotten those over her prosthetic.

The author/narrator will not shut up about smoking cigarettes. Yes, it says in the synopsis that Miriam is a proud chain smoker, but why? If you want to have the character smoke, that’s fine I guess, but a search for the word “cigarette” in the kindle book shows that it’s mentioned 111 times in a 339 page book. “Smoke” is in there an additional 31 times. Does Miriam really need to light a cigarette every 3 pages in order to have it be a part of the character? Never mind the fact that smoking is a disgusting addiction and shouldn’t be promoted, the constant mention felt like some kind of delirious drinking game.

The plot of the book was decent, though it could have used a bit more grit, but the writing quality made a decent story all but intolerable.

Reading Reborn in Shadows was an experience that stayed with me long after I turned the final page. Maya Fisher doesn’t just tell a story she pulls you into Miriam Ryder’s world so completely that you feel every ounce of her struggle, her resilience, and her quiet yearning for peace.

Miriam is one of the most complex and authentic characters I’ve come across in a long time. Her sharp wit, her flaws, her vulnerability everything about her felt real and raw. I found myself rooting for her not just to survive, but to truly live, despite the weight of her past and the prejudice she constantly faced. The way Fisher balances Miriam’s personal battles with the ever-present external threats is masterful; the suspense never lets go, yet it’s the emotional depth that really makes this story unforgettable.

What struck me most was how the novel explored identity and second chances without ever feeling forced. The love story woven into the darkness felt both tender and necessary it gave light to the shadows in such a beautiful, human way. And the small town setting of Jasper Hill, with all its secrets and whispers, became more than just a backdrop; it felt like a character of its own.

This book is more than a thriller. It’s about survival, yes, but it’s also about courage, acceptance, and the fragile hope of building something new when the odds are stacked against you. It made me reflect on resilience and the quiet power of choosing to keep going, even when the world seems determined to push you down.

Reborn in Shadows deserves every bit of recognition it has received. It’s heartfelt, suspenseful, and deeply moving a story that reminds us that even in the darkest places, love and reinvention are possible. I can honestly say it’s one of the most powerful novels I’ve read this year.

I made it thru the first 30% and while I appreciate the lgbtq representation and admire the achievement of the author publishing their first novel, the writing itself was not for me. There's potential in the story, but, personally, I thought it needed more care in the world/ character/ plot development.

A Powerful, Gritty, and Deeply Personal Story That Deserves Its Place in the Library of Congress

Maya Fisher’s Reborn In Shadows: From The Ashes is not just a novel—it’s a statement, a triumph, and a gripping testament to survival, identity, and second chances. From the first page, this debut novel pulls you into the world of Miriam Ryder, a chain-smoking, wise-cracking, transgender woman and below-the-knee amputee, who is on the run in witness protection after surviving a brutal encounter with a powerful crime family. Her past refuses to let her go, her present is filled with small-town hostility and unexpected kindness, and her future? That’s something she’s still trying to figure out.

Fisher’s writing is razor-sharp, blending raw emotion with nail-biting suspense. Miriam is a character that leaps off the page—flawed, fierce, and utterly unforgettable. The novel doesn’t shy away from hard-hitting topics: bigotry, transphobia, violence, and the struggle for acceptance—but it also shines with moments of warmth, humor, and love. The romance between Miriam and Ava, a passionate art teacher, unfolds with beautiful vulnerability, adding heart to an already electrifying story.

What makes this book truly remarkable is the authenticity behind it. Written by a transgender, amputee author, Reborn In Shadows offers a perspective that is often absent in mainstream fiction, making its selection for inclusion in the Library of Congress even more extraordinary. For a debut novel to achieve this honor is no small feat—it means this story will be preserved, studied, and accessible for generations to come.

Fisher’s world-building is immersive, capturing the stark beauty of small-town Appalachia alongside its harsh realities. The supporting cast is just as compelling, each character bringing depth to the narrative, whether they are allies, adversaries, or something in between. The tension builds masterfully, keeping you turning the pages late into the night, and the emotional beats hit hard—sometimes with a gut punch, other times with the warmth of found family.

Final Verdict:
If you’re looking for a thrilling, thought-provoking, and emotionally charged novel, Reborn In Shadows is an absolute must-read. It’s a powerful LGBTQ+ story, a survival thriller, and a deeply personal journey all in one—and now, with its place in the Library of Congress, it has solidified itself as a piece of literary history.

Maya Fisher has arrived, and the literary world should take notice.

Maya Fisher’s novel “Reborn in Shadows: From the Ashes” is a thrilling novel featuring a stand-out, lovable heroine and the complexities of life. It’s also the first book in The Ryder Chronicles series. The story follows Miriam Ryder, a transgender woman and recent amputee, as she adjusts to her new life in the rural Virginia town of Jasper Hill. Miriam is seeking a fresh start after escaping from a powerful crime family, battling external threats, transphobia, and the past that will not stay buried along the way. Fisher’s novel is a story of survival and self-discovery. Miriam is a larger-than-life character who takes on each challenge fearlessly as she pursues justice, security, and love in her new life.

My favorite part of this novel is the main character. Miriam is a survivor, yet she remains vulnerable throughout the novel. There is so much depth to her character and the way she approaches her traumatic past. This story is not just about what happened to Miriam, but also how she is choosing to move forward and heal.

Readers who enjoy complex characters will find someone to root for in Miriam. Seeing her grow into her new identity and community was quite rewarding. There were times when the pace of this thriller was sacrificed due to longer, introspective passages, but I still found the novel compelling and found myself deeply invested in Miriam’s story and how she grew throughout the course of the story.

Despite following Miriam’s healing journey, the narrative in “Reborn in Shadows” is still tense throughout. Fisher does fairly well blending suspense, action, and drama alongside Miriam’s personal struggles. However, there are a few points where it feels like Fisher is telling us what’s happening in the story instead of allowing the reader to experience it.

As a debut, this work shows Fisher’s storytelling ability and further installments in this series will likely show improvement in style. Overall, “Reborn in Shadows: From the Ashes” shows a lot of promise in Maya Fisher as an author and introduces a fantastic protagonist for a new series. Readers who love crime thrillers and want rural LGBTQ+ representation will find a lot to love about this story and find a new author to watch in Fisher.

To be honest, I was surprised when Maya told me she'd written a book. I've known her for more than 20 years and she's always been a great storyteller, but I'd no idea she was working on anything this. I was honored to be given a chance to read it before it came out and I can honestly say it's a great book!

No spoilers, but this is a gripping adventure tale as well as a deeply personal story of one person's rise from the ashes of the past to start a new life. As the description states, this is the story of Miriam, a chain smoking trans woman with a prosthetic leg and what happens when she moves to a new town. Which is true enough, but what we really get is a deep dive into the inner life of a remarkable survivor. The trans experience is presented honestly and sometimes heartbreakingly. I've always considered myself an ally but this book made me realize how little I really understood about the day to day lives of trans people. The chapters dealing with the character's physical therapy and adjusting to her leg prosthesis are harrowing, but by then you're rooting for her. Add to all this a constant sense of dread and menace that reasserts itself when the characters and the reader least expect it, and you've got a suspense story that fires on all cylinders.
The writing itself is very immediate: you really feel like you're in the moment when the action happens. Some scenes are so cinematic I could literally see them, and the quick cuts between characters' inner thoughts and the story added extra urgency to the more intense parts.
She also captures the area well. Her descriptions of the local scenery are spot on. And her characters feel very genuine.
AND it's a love story. Did I mention that? It's a mystery and a love story and much more, all in one.
When I put it down, I felt like I'd been taken on a journey in the way only the best stories do. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
This is book one of a trilogy and I can't wait to read the next part! I can't even imagine where it goes next but I'm along for the ride.

This book was a slog to get through. The main character's brash and honestly foolish nature would be semi-compelling if written properly. But she makes a lot of poor decisions that don't make sense and aren't written in a way that made me want to root for her, or that made me understand her logic. This book needs editing, too, reading much like a 10th grade high school project.

Things I liked:
-Fisher writes Miriam's disability incredibly well.

Things I disliked:
-Miriam's decisions don't make sense at all to me.
-There's too many side characters, such as a group which is included purely for "diversity." It's not diversity if you mention POC and then they serve no real purpose to the plot. Those are pawns to get brownie points with readers.
-The cover is obviously A.I. assisted or generated. Hire real artists or learn how to make your own cover.
-The ending feels incredibly mean spirited for the book that tries to emphasize the power of hope and resistance.
-I love the U-haul lesbian trope but it was not well executed and I didn't care at all about the romance.
-The author uses a lot of stereotypes to depict Miriam's transition. Stereotypes aren't necessarily bad, but many of the ones used are very harmful to transfeminine people. (For example, the distinction between Miriam and her "past self" was teetering well into Emilia Perez territory of transphobia.)
-So much unnecessary information and exposition dumps. There's a lot of times where something can be narrated instead of written out.
-The very odd pacing.

I'm aware this is going to be part of a series, but I'm staying away from the next one. It's 2025 and these kinds of transphobic and brutal narratives are pointless unless done with nuance. This book has no nuance whatsoever.

Maya Fisher delivers a powerful and emotional thriller in Reborn in Shadows, a novel that masterfully weaves survival, identity, and resilience. Miriam Ryder is an unforgettable protagonist—fierce, sharp-witted, and carrying the weight of a painful past. Forced into witness protection, she seeks solace in Jasper Hill, but safety is never guaranteed. As Miri battles both external threats and her own demons, the story grips you with its raw honesty and intensity. 💨💔

What truly sets this book apart is its depth of character and relationships. Miri’s romance with a passionate art teacher adds warmth to the novel, creating a stunning contrast to the suspense. Their connection feels authentic—built on trust, understanding, and a spark that refuses to be dimmed. But danger looms, and as secrets unravel, the tension is relentless. ❤️🎭

Fisher’s writing is both atmospheric and immersive, bringing Jasper Hill to life with vivid descriptions and an undercurrent of unease. The town may seem picturesque, but prejudice and hidden dangers lurk beneath the surface. The blend of mystery, thriller, and romance keeps the pages turning, making it impossible to look away as Miri fights for her place in a world that constantly tries to erase her. 🏚️⚡

Reborn in Shadows is a gripping, heartfelt, and necessary read—offering representation, suspense, and a story that lingers long after the last page. It’s about fighting for survival, embracing one’s truth, and finding love in the most unexpected places. If you’re searching for a book that delivers both action and emotion, this is it. 📚🔥

Reborn in Shadows is a masterclass in character-driven suspense, blending raw emotional depth with razor-sharp tension. Miriam Ryder is a protagonist you won’t just root for—you’ll carry her with you long after the final page. The novel’s Appalachian setting is richly textured, its small-town claustrophobia amplifying every whisper of danger, while its exploration of identity, resilience, and love feels both urgent and timeless. Balancing moments of aching vulnerability with heart-pounding stakes, this award-winning tale doesn’t just entertain—it challenges, inspires, and lingers. A triumph of storytelling that cements its place as a modern classic in LGBTQIA literature.

This book is impossible to put down. Maya is one of my favorite authors. The story just flows, leaving the reader frantically turning the page to see what happens next. A fresh new story, truly original in its work. Not only does this book deliver an important poignant look into lbtgq life, it also delivers action, mystery, and romance. As Miriam finds her new romance, she has to decide if she will follow her heart and risk everything or will she follow her head and deny herself of a very clear once and life time love. I had to cross my fingers and hope she made it through!

You can tell there was so much love and effort put into this book! Highly recommend!

Wow, this book is such a captivating story that I couldn’t put it down! I was totally drawn into Miriam Ryder’s journey of survival. I was so moved by her strength and determination. Fisher really brought Miriam’s struggles and victories to life, and it hit me hard. The way the book captures the spirit of bravery, starting over, and the power of love when things get tough really made me think about how amazing the human spirit is.

A really wonderful book. Not what I expected! I expected the mafioso angle, the heart wrenching loss of a friend and a leg, and the violence that came with it. I did not expect that the heart of this is a love story. A love story between to souls and the love story of Miriam and herself. I would recommend this to anyone!

I started with the prologue, which is very odd for me, but it drew me in just in itself and that doesn’t happen very often. The more I read the more into it I got the more I didn’t want to put it down. It was so awesome at times I should’ve been sleeping and not reading a really amazing book and an amazing author.
