Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before people invented navigable aircraft and practical submarines and devised any means of spacecraft. He ranks behind Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie as the second most translated author of all time. People made his prominent films. People often refer to Verne alongside Herbert George Wells as the "father of science fiction."
"I end here this catalog which is somewhat dry perhaps but very exact."
Ok where to start with this classic. There were some fantastic adventures under the sea as the Nautilus travels 20,000 leagues basically twice the circumference of the earth but also it was a bit tedious and yes could be very dry or should I say boring 🤪 he describes in great details many under water creatures using scientific terms that had me zoning out. The only way I got through it was because of the audio. I have a beautiful edition with pictures & maps that I followed along with which made it more fun. What I do find interesting is Jules Verne wrote this book in 1870… he was ahead of his time as he describes many features of modern submarines & under water diving. He was so knowledgeable about science & so forward thinking designing a submarine that can travel in almost any condition with a library filled with thousands of books & a grand salon which was a massive museum filled with art, natural treasures plus a huge observation window to watch the under water creatures. It follows Professor Pierre Aronnax a French natural scientist, his servant Conseil & Ned Land a Canadian harpooner who are rescued by Captain Nemo but later realize they are prisoners on the Nautilus. They are welcome to join Captain Nemo’s adventures but he will never let them return to civilization to keep his existence secret from the world. While I’m glad to say I’ve read this classic I will not be revisiting it. I do plan on reading more of Jules Verne’s books.
“in my excited brain I saw over again all my existence on board the Nautilus; every incident, either happy or unfortunate… the submarine hunt, the Torres Straits, the savages of Papua, the running ashore, the coral cemetery, the passage of Suez, the Island of Santorin, the Cretan diver, Vigo Bay, Atlantis, the iceberg, the South Pole, the imprisonment in the ice, the fight among the poulps, the storm in the Gulf Stream, the Avenger, and the horrible scene of the vessel sunk with all her crew. All these events passed before my eyes like scenes in a drama.”
