Return to Avalon #1

Assassin of the Gods: A Dark Fae, Enemies-To-Lovers, Fated Mates Fantasy

Rate this book
Tana Huntleigh didn’t ask to be queen.

Plagued by her own failing heart, her only plan was to live long enough to fight one last battle for the right cause. But when she’s ripped from Earth and thrust into an immortal realm brimming with politics, deadly magic, and scheming fae courts, she discovers her final fight might mean more than her life—it might determine the fate of an entire realm.

Reluctant to accept her destiny, Tana faces opposition from every corner of high fae lords with ambition in their veins, a deadly darkness spreading across the land, and an infuriatingly magnetic prince who guards his broken heart as fiercely as she guards her own. But Avalon chose her for a reason, and the trials she must face will demand every ounce of her skill, wit, and courage.

The throne waits, but so do the shadows.

And some will stop at nothing to ensure Tana fails.

Rebekah Sinclair writes books that bite back.
Dark rom-coms. Greek mythology retellings. Wicked fae. Billionaire antiheroes. Her stories blend unhinged humor, high-stakes heat, and emotional wreckage you’ll thank her for later.

With 11 published novels (and plenty more on the way), Rebekah has built a world of morally gray men, stabby women, and plot twists that hit like a betrayal kink. Whether you’re into serial killers with soft spots, gods who fall too hard, or fae realms soaked in shadow, there’s a love story in her lineup that will ruin you—in the best way.

Off the page, Rebekah is a single mom to five wildly chaotic kids and four fur-babies (two cats, two dogs, all equally dramatic). Writing started as her escape. Now it's her full-blown career, complete with exclusive covers, spicy book boxes, and signings where readers show up wearing eyeliner sharper than her plot twists.

When she’s not writing, she’s probably hiding from her kids in the pantry, pretending to be brainstorming.

Welcome to Rebekah Sinclair’s world.
The spice is high. The stakes are higher.
And no one makes it out emotionally intact.

Let me start by saying if you all have been sleeping on Rebekah Sinclair’s writing this is your sign to stop right now go to the Zon or her shop or wherever buy her books and immediately read them! She has it all folks looking for your next fantasy romantasy…boom, how bout comedic gold with banter that will have you kicking your feet…double boom….Spice….five alarm fire 🔥

Now on to the review…

This series is a spin off of her Hit Forgotten Goddess series, which if you have not read that I highly recommend reading it, though you don’t have to have read that series first I will say you see some characters in this book that were also in Forgotten Goddess books.

Tana, our FMC, reluctant Queen, all around bad mama jama and smart as a whip too gets thrust into the world of Immortals one she doesn’t know and still has the bravery to come out on top! Enter Orion, this worlds spicy smexy af shadow zaddy who has protective grump down pat and arrogance that at times will have you kicking your feet laughing.

Great side characters in this book loved seeing Mor and her tribe again and Hypnos too. The banter in this one was top tier which we love and spice grab you some water bottles you’re gonna need them cause this book is 🔥!

Overall I rate this one a solid 5 ⭐️ and on the spice scale I’m gonna say 4🌶️!

I just love Rebekah Sinclair! I started this read as an ARC, but wasn't able to read it as quickly as I would have liked to (not much uninterrupted time to sit and read).
The FMC is fierce, brave, mouthy, and goes after what she wants. The same can be said for the MMC. when their two worlds collide it rattles the realms.
This story is a great mix of plot and character driven, with a heavy helping of explicit spice and savagery ♡
Kudos, Rebekah ♡
I cant wait until book 2!

I read this as soon as it hit my inbox as an ARC - as I do with everything from Rebekah Sinclair. Phenomenal author with amazing storytelling skills. I devoured the Forgotten Goddess series as ARC’s & love that this is a spinoff series, giving more story time with Orion, Mor, & Hypnos, plus the badass new FMC, Tana. I can’t wait for book 2 - **chef’s kiss**

My absolute favorite book from this author.

I absolutely love everything about this book and would give it 10 stars if possible. The MFC is sassy and brave, sensual, and proud, and I'm 💯 in love with her. She is fierce and smart and strong and just freaking incredible. The MMC is loyal and protective in all the right ways yet still keeps his cockiness for us to purr over. The chemistry and spice are top-tier, and the storyline is just fascinating, keeping me sucked in from the very first page to the very last. The flow and pace were excellent, and I can not wait for the next book!

I could not put this one down! What a phenomenal book! Tana is a bad ass who is strong willed and such a smart ass! The woman is a bad ass. Orion is a shadow daddy! Also can we say spicy?! The spice started almost immediately into this book and had me curling my toes. There is nothing more satisfying than being hooked into a book early on and being glued until the end. This one delivered! Absolutely recommend!

This is a 4.5 for me. I love the way Rebekah builds these fantasy worlds and the characters within them. This is a start to a new series introduced in her last series The Forgotten Goddess and I know already that I am once again in for a wild ride with this book with the action and steam already happening in the first book. I absolutely adored Tana who is everything I love is a strong badass FMC. Her skills and brains are unmatched, and she was just so confident in who she was. This book is also really steamy at times either between the FMC and the MMC or when they were engaged in other partners. Now with shadow daddy Orion there were a lot of things I really enjoyed about him as well. Now I will say there were times when I appreciated his protective instincts, but I also wanted to slap him upside the head at the same time because he would let these instincts blind him to how kickass Tana was and how she was in no way a helpless human. She was a kickass warrior, and he needed to realize that she could in fact stand at his side taking care of not just herself but him as well. But when you see things from his POV it wasn't done in a way to stifle her it was just him genuine being scared for her and knowing what the FAE are capable of. Also, in a weird way his cockiness was charming.
Overall, this is a start to a new series that I know is going to take me on a wile adventure and I can't wait!

This book is about Tana who didn't ask to be queen of a fae kingdom she had never heard of. She was living her life as best as she could looking for one more mission for the right cause where she could fight her last fight before her heart finally fails. But before that could happen, she is ripped from earth and taken to the Fae realm Avalon where the court is full of deadly magic, politics and schemes of the fae and their different courts. But the issue is while this land may have chosen her to be the queen to fight for this dying realm it doesn't mean its inhabitants will tolerate what they think is a lowly mortal as their queen. Faced with opposition around every corner Tana is reluctant to accept the destiny laid out before her but with a deadly darkness spreading throughout the land the warrior within her feels the call to action to try and survive the trials, she must face to save this land and its people. But she won't be alone as she will have the infuriating charming prince at her side doing everything, who will stop at nothing to make sure she becomes queen and sits her on the throne that awaits her. But the shadows and those helping them will do whatever they can to stop her whatever it takes.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is another homerun for Rebekah! It ties so seamlessly into the Forgotten Goddess series, but has its own unique worldbuilding that can definitely stand on its own two feet. I think anyone would enjoy this whether they had read the other series first or not.

Something that is really important for me as a reader with aphantasia and adhd is descriptive writing that paints a picture for me, and compelling/dynamic dialog that keeps me engaged and focused. Rebekah has mastered both of those things. THE BANTER?! Oof. So good.

This is a rare case where I saw none of myself in the FMC but I was still rooting for her the entire time. Sometimes not relating to a character can make you feel detached, but I was so deeply entrenched in Tana’s journey from day one. Tana is an incredible FMC. So strong and sassy and there is so much more to her than just that chip on her shoulder. I can’t wait to see how both the story and her character arc progresses as she gets deeper into this world.

We briefly meet Orion in the Forgotten Goddess series and he was an immediate favorite, but seeing him shine as the leading man of his own series is just *chef’s kiss* extra special. He is delicious! The band of “side” characters in this series are all perfect too. There is such a good balance of humor and heart and mysterious backstory that the characters all immediately feel like family, but like maaaaaaybe a family with skeletons in their closets and I want to know all their secrets/pasts!

Also, this book is a BEAST. She is not a short read, but I would not edit out a single thing. And for me as a slow reader, I feel like I breezed through this because I was invested and excited the entire time. It was not a quick read for me, but it was an easy one. I truly enjoyed every minute of it.

An Easy 5 Stars.

Not a standalone - but absolutely phenomenal.

Rebekah Sinclair has done it again with this spellbinding start to a new series set in the world of The Forgotten Goddess - and let me be clear: you need to read that series first. This book picks up after Awakening the Forgotten Goddess (Book 2), and the threads between both series are tightly intertwined. For full context (and maximum emotional devastation), start at the beginning.

Our FMC, Tana, is a no-nonsense, fierce-as-hell woman who gets yanked into a world she didn’t even know existed - only to find out it’s one she’s meant to rule. Enter Orion: a broody, possessive, dark fae shadow zaddy who takes “touch her and die” energy to delicious new levels. He’s protective, powerful, and absolutely unbothered by anyone who gets in his way.

And then there’s Mor. I’ve been obsessed with their character since they first appeared in The Forgotten Goddess series, and seeing more of them here? Perfection. Their story has been simmering, and I cannot wait to see where it goes next.

🔥 Spice level: Explicit. Check the content warnings first. If it’s not your jam, no shade - but don’t come for the book because your personal boundaries didn’t match the page.

Tropes you’ll find inside:

Dark fae
Enemies to lovers
Modern fantasy world
Forced proximity
The Chosen One
Found family
Protective MMC
Magical hidden realms

4.5 ⭐️ 2.5 🌶️

Assassin of the Gods, the first book in Rebekah Sinclair’s new romantasy series, swept me up from the very first chapter. Fans of ACOTAR will immediately feel at home and appreciate the familiarity.

The story follows Tana (FMC) who is captured by the fae and taken to the Night Court of Avalon, where she’s expected to claim her rightful place as the chosen queen. From there, the book unfolds into a gripping blend of political intrigue, dangerous trials, and high-stakes battles. The action scenes and battles are well executed—tense, vivid, and full of energy—while the manipulations and betrayals from rival courts keep the tension high throughout.

I very much enjoyed the magic system and the different creatures and beasts that inhabit the realm, the world building was immersive without ever becoming overwhelming. The writing was engaging, drawing you deeper into the world with each chapter.

The slow-burn romance however was the highlight for me. The chemistry between the main characters builds at the perfect pace. Their love/hate dynamic adds emotional depth without overshadowing the larger plot, which is saying a lot since the spice was definitely spicing!

Overall, Assassin of the Gods is a captivating start to what promises to be an exciting series. With strong worldbuilding, compelling characters, and a promising romance, I’m excited for the next installment. I can’t wait to see where the story leads next.

I’d just like to start this off saying that if you haven’t read anything by Rebekah Sinclair that you are really missing out! Her books are available on her website as well as Amazon. Every book that she had written that I have read has left me wanting more.

I have been patiently waiting for the release of Assassin of the Gods and once again Rebekah has created another masterpiece! This book is in the same world as The Forgotten Goddess series. This takes place in the Avalon Realm, and we are introduced to a FMC named Tana. Tana is a warrior from Gaea who serves in a special forces unit in the military with the sole purpose of dealing with shifters that pose a threat to the mortals in Gaea… That is until she finds herself take to the Avalon Realm with no was of returning. All because the realm has chosen her for their Queen. I should probably mention that Avalon is a fae realm and Tana appears to be the only mortal.

The MMC is shadow daddy Orion…. I can’t possibly say enough about him but I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed!!! On top of the main characters this book provides many amazing characters that you will fall in love with!

Thank you once again for giving me the opportunity to be able to read such a beautiful book Rebekah! I will be looking forward to the next one!

Assassin of the Gods is an exquisite synthesis of contemporary fantasy, exhilarating action, and profound emotional storytelling. Rebekah continues to impress with yet another remarkable offering. While I hold a deep appreciation for all her works, her Romantasy novels stand out as unparalleled masterpieces.

This narrative presents a compelling combination of sacrifice, self-exploration, and empowerment, challenging conventional notions of propriety and instead championing the courage to carve one’s own journey. It was a delightful experience to reconnect with Mor and her tribe from The Forgotten Goddess, and I admired how their presence seamlessly intertwined with this new odyssey.

Tana, the protagonist, embodies strength, confidence, and an alluring vivacity, all encompassed in a striking persona. She emerges as a tenacious and spirited character, providing moments of humor that brightened my reading experience; I often found myself wishing to envelop her in a comforting embrace. Orion, the enigmatic "shadow daddy," captures readers' affections and frustrations alike, exemplifying a charming complexity. The dialogue sparkles with wit and camaraderie, showcasing the beauty of found family and the deep connections that bind them together.

Absolutely a must read. Can a book be any more magnificent?!?!

Story: 5⭐
Spice: 3.5🌶️

What an amazing story by Rebekah. It's astonishing what authors imagine and with a little bit a time they can weave together something so beautiful and intricate.

This is a spin off from The forgotten goddess series and you actually don't need to read that series to understand this one. I would suggest it as if gives you insight but it's not a deal breaker.

We have a gender swap King Arthur retelling that's brimming with Greek mythology. Throw in politics, fae, nobility, and a bad ass special oops FMC who dropped into this new world from our world and you get an insane story of a human defying all odds.

Both MCs are so strong and really unhinged when it comes to protecting each other. I have parts highlighted on my ebook with 😮 because it's so shocking. Their slow burn chemistry is through the roof

This one is spicy! There are a lot of explicit open door scenes and a few that feature multiple partners as well as exhibitionism but even with all the naughty times it's just really good balance of story and spice.

I highly recommend, especially if you like epic fantasy. The world Rebekah created is amazing.

Rebekah Sinclair has done it again! Assassin of the Gods was everything I needed and more! This spin-off from The Forgotten Goddess pulled me in from page one and did not let go.

Tana was an absolute force—fierce, sassy, and so much fun to follow! Her strength and wit had me hooked, and I couldn’t get enough of her. And then there’s Orion… the delicious, cocky, protective shadow daddy himself. The banter, the tension, the undeniable chemistry—pure perfection! He had me cracking up and swooning all at once. 😂🔥

And of course, Mor remains my favorite! Seriously, where does all that food go?! 🍔😅

This book was a phenomenal start to a new series, and I need book two ASAP! If you love powerful heroines, broody yet hilarious heroes, and a story that keeps you turning pages, this one is a must-read!

This book has been such a great read. The FMC is a military female lead of her own team, she is a killer and shes damn good at it, unbeknowst to her she is also the chosen queen of avalon and a MORTAL. Avalon is dying and the fae know its because a chosen queen has not been on the throne for centuries. In comes Tana who is kidnapped from earth and taken to Avalon, she must prove herself worthy but does she want to leave her life, leave earth and her team. Tana has her own shadow daddy and her own protectors from Greek Mythology, Rebekah is a master at writting these characters, the Morrigan in particular, such a badass. The book is not slow and it packs a ton of information but its easy to follow and impossible to put down. It is book 1 in a series that Rebekah promises to be crazy!!
5/5 stars the plot is great, again i was transported into a movie with this book and she does this everytime, her writting style is unmatched. The spice be spicying...fae and their huge built ;) well i cant wait for book 2.

4.5 ⭐️ - I loved this story! I appreciate Tana as the FMC. She is snarky, stubborn but also driven by logic and strategy, and strong. But she’s not the “oh I need to train because I’ve barely had to defend myself in life” strong, rather the “I am a legitimate warrior in the mortal realm and I bring that badassery to Avalon” strong. Common romantasy themes are present in the story but it’s told in what I thought was a refreshing way. The stakes are high - life on borrowed time or death.

The only problem I have, which seems to be consistent within Rebekah Sinclair’s books, is the incomplete or lackluster editing. I don’t think it’s her writing because the story/plot, descriptions, world-building were all great (IMO). But kept asking myself “where was the editor?” Side characters’ names were mixed up - Liora became Liona, Aeris became Elyra, Starfall became Skyfall at one point. I get that a 670 page book is a lot to edit but I love thick fantasy books and this seems unique to the author. Please, RS, get a new editor!

🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spicy, and great world building and magical creatures but the plot was slow and only picked up at the end. The whole dark vs light is cliche and the FMC was getting annoying with her “I want to go home” monologues on repeat. The lust between the FMC and MMC was abrupt considering how often she declared she hated him and they did not get to know each other on any real deep level. The bond hints at more but is mainly physical in this book. I was also annoyed with the MMC wanting her more than physically but stopping himself due to his own issues when it is clear they are being pulled together by far greater powers, which they totally ignore repeatedly. I really wish the plot arced but we are left without knowing much… no real movement from the beginning but we start to see the FMC take charge of her life and make decisions at the end which sets up book 2 for more plot development.

If you haven't read Rebekah Sinclair, you're really missing out. She has a way of seamlessly molding stories you have been told with beautiful new worlds she plucks from her mind. In Assassin Of The Gods, authurian Avalon is melded with the fae realm, and women hold the power of the throne. I loved this feminine inspired switch to the traditional story. In Rebekah fashion, this story would be nothing short of a traumatic, gut-wrenching experience as our FMC and MMC are afflicted with the same illness. Both, unyielding to fight to the death. Their story together is very much a slow burn, romantically, but they definitely are taking their frustrations out on each other, iykyk. While you can see where the story is heading, Rebekah isn't handing you all the satisfaction. Leaving many questions unanswered for book two. A great read if you love fantasy, fae, and epic battles.

I got the pleasure of being an ARC for this book. This book is part of a multiverse. It goes with the series "The Forgotten Goddess". The FMC, Tana, is a bad b*tch as they come. I love the fact that she has smarts, looks, and lots of sass. The MMC, Orion, is to die for. Every fantasy readers dream. There are plenty of trigger warnings, so always check before reading. The Mor is another amazing character. She is so well written and I can't wait to see more of her. The descriptions of Avalon are breathtaking. Rebekah has out done herself. I would definitely recommend this series to every dark fansty reader, matter of fact I already have! This is probably my favorite book of hers so far, and that's saying a lot. (Her series are pretty awesome).

This book was Ahhmazing!! This is my first by this author and it had me running to add more of her books to my TBR!!

The world building and characters were chef’s kiss! Tana, the FMC, is a strong, fierce, confident bad ass. I can’t say enough about her. And Orion, he is cocky in an alluring way and delicious in my book!

The author masterly hooked me from the first few pages and didn’t let go! I felt completely immersed into the pages with the characters. The magic system was top notch. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue and plot of this story. Now, the banter and the steam… whew! So good! 🥵

Although, this book is not a short one but it is indeed one you will have a hard time putting down. An ingenious way to start off a series! I’m all for it and can’t wait for book 2!

Assassin of the Gods delivers the level of storytelling I am growing happily accustomed to from Rebekah. A great blend of dark fantasy and intricate world-building. You all know I am an absolute sucker for a good, and robust world build where I can get lost in the description and a writer's words. A solid four stars for its ambitious story, complex, but still believable characters, world building and another yet story to fall for. My only gripe is small, the pacing occasionally falters, but it is so worth it for an amazing morally grey character's journey, as well as another complex magic system that is highly tangible within the world. The setting and her characters, much like her last series, kept me thoroughly engaged and greedily wanting MORE! It's a must read.

Rebekah has done it again! A book I couldn't put down. The mythology, the lore, world building all top tier and even though this is definitely not a short book, it was not too overwhelming and placed well through the story. I loved that characters from her Forgotten Goddess series have made a comeback and have new back stories giving them more depth. The FMC is strong willed, and there were times where I wanted to smack some sense into her, but it helped with the tension in the book, I liked that she did not give in too easily because it also opened up the path to the amazing banter between her and Orion. Orion, like our FMC is strong willed and I kept making guesses on who would give in first. THAT TEMPLE SCENE! The spice was amazing. I can not wait to see what happens in the next book.
