Vintageputiikki Primrose Hillissä

Rate this book
Uudet mahdollisuudet ovat aina muodissa!

Kutkuttavia tunteita ja hurmaavia muotiluomuksia ihastuttavassa vintageputiikissa. Lämminsydämisen sarjan aloitus Bloomsburyn kirjakauppa -sarjan tekijältä.

Kolmekymppiä on kilahtanut lasiin, eikä Sophyllä yllättäen ole töitä eikä parisuhdetta. Kun Sophyn isä tarjoaa hänelle määräaikaista paikkaa vintageliikkeessään Primrose Hillissä, Sophy tarttuu tilaisuuteen. Liike osoittautuukin oikeaksi aarreaitaksi, ja inhottavan kollegan äksyilystä huolimatta Sophy alkaa rakastua vintagemuotiin. Väliaikaiseksi tarkoitettua tilannetta mutkistaa Charles Radley, tyylikäs jalokiviasiantuntija, jolla on upeat räätälöidyt vaatteet, luvattoman terävät poskipäät ja karismaa vaikka muille jakaa.

Annie Darling asuu Lontoossa pikkiriikkisessä, kirjoja pursuavassa asunnossa. Hän rakastaa rakkausromaaneja sekä kissaansa herra Mackenzieta. Vintageputiikki Primrose Hillissä on romanttisen sarjan avaus, jossa seurataan elämää ja ihmissuhteita käytettyjen vaatteiden liikkeessä.

Hon lyckas dra in mig i världen som boken beskriver.

If you love vintage clothes and found family you will love this book! I found myself totally immersed in Sophy's world with her chaotic dad, her prickly boss and her well meaning parents.
She doesn't love vintage clothes as much as everyone else in the shop that her dad owns, but it's only temporary, right?
All she needs to do is to save enough money to get her to Australia, but after meeting jewellery dealer Charles, she starts to rethink that idea..
A slow burn with heart, strong female characters and a perfect ending.

3,5 / 5 ⭐️

Thank you so much to Hodder and Stoughton for allowing me an advanced press release book for this wonderful Annie Darling bok, and letting me be on the blog tour.

This book is out now in paperback for 8.99 kindle for 3.99 and audio for 7.99. No matter which way you read this darling book you are in for a treat.

Although this book was gifted to me. I can also say that my review is completely non biased and I am just a massive fan of Annie Darling.

I have now read and enjoyed many books by this author including:
True love at the lonely hearts bookshop
Crazy in love at the lonely hearts bookshop
A winter's kiss on Rochester Mew
And
The little bookshop of lonely hearts
All of which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

The vintage dress shop in Primrose Hill is the latest book by Annie Darling and is 352 pages long. For me this was a quick read because I was engrossed in the storyline and took the characters quickly to my heart. So I read this book in a matter of hours. But if you are a more casual reader this book is great for reading little sections at a time, putting down and picking back up and getting stuck right back into the book. Without feeling confused or not remembering what you last read. In that way it is extremely easy to read and that just goes to show the amazingness of the authors writing style.

So let's jump right in to what time book is all about shall we:

In this book we meet Sophy Stevens who is down on her luck. She is having a bad time of things recently and really needs a pick me up. Having lost her job, having recently broken up with her boyfriend and back at home with her parents. Sophy is in need of a redo.

So she has the wonderful idea to escape to Australia. Where her grandparents live on their farm. Where she wants to finally meet them, and to surprise then for their anniversary. However Sophy needs a job and stat. Without any money. There is no way she will be getting to Australia any time soon and she is on a tight deadline.

So when she goes to meet her dad. Who left her mum when Sophy was little, who always dropped out of any time he had with her when he was growing up and who disappears for long periods of time without telling anyone where he is going, when he is coming back or even if he is alive. Sophy is surprised when he offers her a job working at his business Something Different.

Sophy remembers her dad having a very dusty old vintage business that smelled of moth balls and old things. So when she agrees she is dreading it. But is pleasently surprised that when she arrives her dad's business is now a vintage dress shop.

Sophy starts her first dad and is met with hostility from the manager Phoebe who looks down her nose at her clothes. Jasmine needs to get Phoebe on side and fast. So when the store is in Desperate need of a new sowing seamstress Sophy ropes in her sister and suddenly Phoebe wants to impart all her wisdom on Sophy. Who doesn't ever think she will fall in love with vintage fashion as much as she does.

Let's not forget that there is also a debonair gemstone specialist called Charles Radley that ends up throwing Sophy's well laid out plans. Wildly off course.

I'll let you find out all the other fun things that happens in this story for yourself, and to meet all of the other wonderful characters that I haven't mentioned yet.

The last thing I will say is that if you love romance books and chick lit books then this book is definitely for you.

Pick up your copy today. I promise you'll enjoy it.

Thanks again Hodden and Stoughton and Annie Darling for letting me read an advanced copy of this book.

The Vintage Dress Shop in Primrose Hill by Annie Darling

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review thanks to Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley.

Blurb

Second chances never go out of style . . .

The heartwarming and romantic new novel from Annie Darling - perfect for fans of Cressida McLaughlin and Holly Hepburn!

Sophy Stevens is moving to Australia. Turning thirty has found her unexpectedly out of a job, out of a relationship, and just in need of Something Different - and Australia, where she can finally meet her grandparents and surprise them on their wedding anniversary, looks like the perfect answer . . . if she can save up the money for the plane ticket.

So when her feckless, absent dad Johnno offers her a job at his vintage clothes shop in Primrose Hill, she can't turn it down. It'll only be for a few months, after all. But the Vintage Dress Shop turns out to be a treasure trove of gorgeous preloved clothes, from a 1930s cocktail gown to a never-worn 50s wedding dress, and despite the disapproval of the snooty manager, Phoebe, Sophy starts to fall in love with vintage fashion.

And then there's Charles Radley, the debonair gemstone specialist with exquisite tailoring, cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass, and enough charm to throw Sophy's plans wildly off course. . .

My Opinion

This book was originally published in four parts, but is now available as one book. Earlier this year, I had been lucky enough to read the first part of this book and I was eager for more. When I was offered the opportunity to read the full book there was no hesitation.

Whilst 352 pages long, this book felt like a quick read - it was just too easy to keep turning the pages that I didn't realise how much time had passed. Sophy is having a bad year and is planning on escaping to Australia to finally meet her grandparents. In order to reach Australia, Sophy needs to find a job and start saving for her ticket. I don't want to give too much away, but this was a delightful read and is full of some great characters. With a lovely story and a great cover, what are you waiting for?

I love a good British romcom. Annie Darling's The Little Bookshop of Lonely Hearts is one of my absolute favourite romcoms of all time. Bookshop setting, ode to Jane Austen and everything charming. What's not to love? In fact it is so much of a favourite that I re-read it once a year! When I saw that Annie Darling had a new series out I was hesitant to pick it up. What if I didn't enjoy it as much as the gang at the Happily Ever After bookshop? Well I'm here to report that this new series is just as charming and wonderful!

Sophy is trying to set her life back on course. After breaking up with her boyfriend, losing her job and moving back home, she's trying to save enough money to emigrate to Australia. However, the only job available is working at her "very absent" father's dress shop. Despite having lots of retail experience, Sophy doesn't know the first thing about vintage dresses, but a job's a job right? As Sophy learns more about vintage than she ever thought she'd want to know, she also discovers more about herself and about second chances!

I'm absolutely no fashionista, especially as I type this in my favourite leggings and hoodie - neither are name brand. However, you don't need to be a fashionista to enjoy this series. With the setting of the dress shop, a little pup by the name of Coco Channel, and an eclectic group of characters and you will soon be thoroughly enthralled with this story!

Being Australian myself, I loved that Sophy has an Aussie Dad and is looking to emigrate. The Australian references were absolutely spot on! Sophy is all of us in our 20s and 30s... not really sure where life is going and trying to find a "second chance" and I completely related to her. However, the ending was not what I expected at all and I just loved it! I won't give anymore away but if second chances are your thing, then you need to read this book! Plus for fans of Annie Darling's other series, the Mews make a cameo!!

The second book in the series, A Change of Heart at the Vintage Dress Shop, comes out next month and features Sophy's sister, Cress' story and I can't wait!

Mysläsning i höst!

I thoroughly enjoyed the first instalment of what will be four novellas and ultimately combined together into one novel. The characters are quirky and no doubt each with their own back stories that will be revealed as the story progresses. In this first instalment there was enough interest to make me keen to read the subsequent installments.

Thirty year old Sophy loses both her job and her live-in boyfriend all on the same day. She has had to move back in with her mother and step father. She has the indignity of having to sleep on the sofa as her childhood bedroom has been converted into her mother's spa room. She has a loose relationship with her biological father who has flitted in and out of her life. He offers her a job in his shop. The only shop that Sophy was aware of him owning was a ratty second hand clothes shop, so obviously she isn't keen but beggars cannot be choosers. Especially if they have a harebrained plan to emigrate to Australia. The first instalment introduces the various characters who work in the shop. However, the shop is not what she is expecting.

I was given a free review copy of the first instalment of the book by Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

I didn't actually know this was a four-part serial when I started reading - I thought it was a whole book, Luckily, it's not and I get to read more!!!!

This definiely has potential.

I think it's really intersting the whole shop and I like the descriptions of the dresses and the character's relationship are strange but also so intersting.

Like the whole Sophy-Charles-Pheobe relationship definitely seems like interesting. I'm glad that Pheone isn't a one-dimensional villian however she isn't exactly someone whose motivation you can understand and root for because Sophy hasn't done anything to her so it's hard to understand where her hatered comes from. I think that it's nice to see her interest in vitage fashion that definiteky makes her somewhat two-dimensional.

I would love to see Sophy and her father Johnno heal their relationship and have a nice normal father-daugghter rekationship or have a healthy wacky one (key word being healthy!).

The names (sophy, johno) are a bit weird. I can't lie, they're a bit strange and I don't really know how someone comes up with Sophie spelt "S-O-P-H-Y". Like, I have never ever seen that in my life.

When the life that you had job, boyfriend and future implode… you need to make changes Sophy is at a cross roads she is back home with her mom Caroline and step dad Mike. Her dad Johno Australian born and now living in England - not the father he should have been to Sophy growing up, wants to help her. Australia is looking better all the time.Johno has a new job lined up for Sophy and the manager Phoebe of the vintage clothing store- is less than amused to have this Gap sack dress/clothes wearing person come into the shop. Coco channel is more welcoming and the other staff is warming to her. Charles is the stores consultant, impeccable dressed and knows vintage jewelry. He helps show shop he the ropes or should I say fabric of fashion…and designers. Crash -course and somehow leaving now is getting harder than it was weeks ago. No one wants her to leave for Australia - but it’s calling her to come. Grandparents having hip surgery and anniversary and a friend’s wedding. She needs to go. But, will she come back? There is another book in series already bought and preordered the 3rd.
Happy 📖 Reading .

I was lucky enough to read this book's first part, and the promise it showed was fulfilled in the complete novel. Sophy is a likeable main protagonist at a crossroads in her life. She decided that drastic measures were necessary. Deciding to go to Australia and visit the family she's never met in the Australian Outback. A chance meeting with her long-lost dad gets her a job in his vintage dress shop to earn money for her new life. There she meets a group of complex individuals and learns about the vintage clothing market, which adds authenticity and depth to the story. This book has comic moments, sweet romance and friendships. The setting is knowledgeably described and makes the story immersive and vibrant. Sophy meets Charles, who knows everything worth knowing about the finer things in life, and their developing relationship drives the story. The ending is an enticing cocktail of heartbreak, love and romance. I like the cast of characters, the vintage clothes knowledge and setting and the many humorous moments.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher.

I really enjoyed Ms. Darling's earlier books and was looking forward to this one, but this one was more of a disappointment. Sophy is determined to emigrate to Australia but must first earn money for passage, so she takes a job in her eccentric father's vintage dress shop. The story is about her education in vintage and her desire to move vs. her attraction to Charles, who furnishes vintage jewelry to the shop.
I was tilted because I got the edition that split the book into four sections distributed over the next month instead of the entire book at once. It felt like a bait and switch, but I got over that because maybe I should have checked the sales site better. I bring it up because I do feel that putting this book out as a serial impacted the pacing.
Sophy was a bit too whiny for me. In fact, most of the characters felt like they were trying too hard instead of acting like real people. I did like the ending, which had a good twist. This definitely wasn't as good as the Lonely Heart Bookshop series, but it was okay.

Utterly charming and tender...

Sophy is delightful as a slightly lost, thirty year old London shopgirl navigating vintage clothes, new friends and delicious possibilities. She reconnects with her slightly shady dear old dad and with his connections a whole new world opens up to her, including a trip to Australia.

Charles is a precious jewellery dealer and vintage clothing aficionado who falls for Sophy in a very British and understated way. Lots (and lots) of kissing ;) He’s got it together much more than Sophy (what does he see in her?) and their interactions are funny and sweet. There’s no darkness or shade, characters are likeable and funny, the setting is delightful and Sophy’s character arc is painless.

If you’d like Rachel Dove without the angst or a British Sarah Adams, ignore the slightly twee cover and enjoy this charming novel!

This is so very light and easy - it gallops along - a perfect holiday read!

Having read Annie Darling's bookshop series many times I was excited about this book. However, I didn't find it as good.

Sophy was a boring character, who had nothing going for her in life, and her main defining characteristics were moving to Australia, being good at retail, and fawning over guys. She wasn't independent and strong like the women in the bookshop series.

For someone who ended up working in a vintage store, the writer managed to make vintage clothing sound like something boring you have to study, as opposed to beautiful and enjoyable. Her lessons with Charles were meant to be romantic, but why did she have to go to museums? You can learn loads by watching films. Very strange.

Australia was mentioned far too much, it became repetitive. It was obvious that it wasn't going to happen.

Overall, I was disappointed in this book, especially considering I know that this author can produce so much better. Looks like I'll just have to reread the other series again.

3.5 stars but Goodreads doesn't do halves.

The hero is well-dressed, well-groomed, into vintage fashion but also decidedly not gay? Was hard to swallow that but OK, I'll take it.

LOVED the shop. Obsessed with it, want more development of the shop and all the other characters who work there and more vintage stuff. Kind of could care less about the romance in this book. Would have enjoyed more exploration of plus-sized vintage clothing and the difficulty to obtain it, instead of just small jabs about size over and over and over.

Again, I read this because it was February, I was sick, and basic love stories are what I want in February especially when not feeling well, but I can't give these books higher ratings. They are chick-lit and fluffy and they get rated as such.

I loved the ‘Lonely Hearts Bookshop series’, which makes tis book more of a letdown and a disappointment. The writing is just lazy, and none of the characters were likeable. Not the protagonist, who has to be one of the most weak-willed, annoying, whiny characters ever. Hundreds of pages of “Of course I want to go to Australia”, “Do I really want to go?”, and “Will I emigrate or emi-visit (is that even a word?). Sheesh! So utterly annoying.

And the main male lead. Nope, nope, nope! Just no. Not dreamy, not sweet, not sexy, nothing. More like a cheapskate who does only what he wants to, and maybe is a good kisser.

In short, such a waste of time and space.

P.S. The second star was mainly because I loved reading about the dresses, and I am definitely not into fashion.

This total book was released in four parts of approximately 100 pages each. The ending of one novella was like the end of a chapter and the next book picked up right where the previous left off. I enjoyed the characters and the story with only one irritation. Sophy and Charles were falling in love but don't want to "start anything" because before she met him she decided to emigrate to Australia to give her small life a boost. So for weeks they dated and kissed for hours but never had sex which meant to them that they weren't really involved. It felt really juvenile that they would act like young teenagers at their age. Anyway while I always like an HEA ending I really wanted her to honor herself and go to Australia rather than give up an exciting but scary dream. You'll have to read it to find out if she did.

A bit of a slow burner.
Didn`t realise it was a two part book until I got to the end so was disappointed I didn`t find out how it ended.
Sophy wants to move to Australia and finally meet her grandparents, so her estranged dad offers her a job to save up for the ticket.
She thinks the job is in a antique shop but is pleasantly surprised it`s a vintage clothes shop with a very bossy manager.
I just couldn`t gel with any of the characters so would not be interested to get the second book to finish the story.

Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC

I love Primrose Hill, and I love vintage dress shops, so I was immediately attracted to this book. It didn't fail. And no, I can never find d a dres to buying thesesnops as a. They are designer goodies and made for tiny tiny women, and b. The price is beyond my budget.
So again I understood the story.
It was well written, enjoyable and believable. Nice style and content.

3.5 Quick, easy read with a happy ending. But never found out why Phoebe and Freddy hate each other. Especially considering how much the dog loves him, I was convinced they were secretly together or something. And can we have a second book with a replacement for Colin? Or Colin getting his act together?

This was quirky and fun and educational and romantic. I thought it was a cute premise about a 30 year old woman trying to find herself by emigrating to Australia. Along the way she finds love and friendships at a vintage dress shop. Really heart-warming
No 4-letter words, and sex is just implied. Loved it.

I enjoyed the story, my one gripe is that the amount of times that Australia was mentioned was overkill. It began to annoy me especially when the word Australia was used three times in a sentence. Toward the end , it spoiled the story for me.

This is part one of a two part book , after reading Thisi. Can’t wait to see how it ends, I do love a slow burn of a story abd romance, nothing like patience and the build up for a great climatic read. I loved the humour, the characters, location, just everything and really need the second part.

Lovely Read

I really enjoyed reading this book—all the characters were so well described-could so imagine working at the shop with all of them- also loved the slow romance of Sophy and Charles…Can’t wait to read the next book in the series…
