A cataclysmic earthquake shatters the Cascadia Subduction Zone, triggering massive tremors, 100-foot tsunamis, and the collapse of entire cities.
The destruction spirals across the West Coast and beyond, ripping open the San Andreas fault and other hidden fractures in the Earth's crust. Civilization unravels, leaving the once-thriving West Coast in ruins.
But the true nightmare is just beginning.
In Oregon, the ground refuses to settle. New and terrifying threats emerge as the survivors struggle to make sense of a world torn apart.
Among them are Reed Walker, a battle-hardened EMT from Albany, and Chloe Cooper, a resilient high school biology teacher. Together, with children and dogs in tow, they must navigate a landscape of chaos and danger.
But surviving the tremors is just the start. They must face obstacles beyond imagination, trust each other, and fight to escape before the earth swallows them whole.
Wreckage Road—a relentless, high-stakes thriller where survival is just the beginning. Get ready for a wild ride!
Where to begin? I live in the only city in the affected area, barely or not mentioned. Yet I am less than 30 miles away from Albany. I know of every location mentioned. I was alive for the St. Helen’s eruption. I lived, at the time, less than 5 miles from the epicenter of our largest earthquake. Having lived through very small ( comparatively) events, this story seems quite feasible. Another plus. Female author. Too few in this genre. I absolutely recommend!
This had an exciting premise, though I’m not sure there is science to explain how so many faults and subduction zones would massively fail and keep failing and cause volcanoes to erupt. And why did USGS send guys to Portland which is in the middle of the disaster area instead of a safer area that would not require the, to keep fleeing? There were also a lot of characters who have brief chapters and then succumbed. I get some of this was to have the POV of the victims but it started to get repetitive. It also took me a bit to engage with some characters in case they were just going to die. That said, I did start to like the main group and their heroic dogs.
I had high hopes! But now that I’ve wasted my time…..
….. at least you don’t have to waste yours. You can just swipe on past this snooze fest of a book.
The story did start out interesting & engaging enough. And I was thrilled that I had found a great series I could sink into for awhile……
But as I read further ….. I started to feel frustrated. Impatient. Aggravated. Bored. I wondered…… WHEN will the author move past this overly extended introduction of the characters & plot? Get us tucked into the meat of the story??
Eventually I found myself at the 20% mark — still feeling the same.
The author’s format is this….. A couple paragraphs — then switch characters, locations, situations — present another couple paragraphs…… Meet someone new, start reading about a new place, occasionally try & become reacquainted with the main characters (…..again)……. Wash, rinse, repeat……
The author gives us far too many temporary & distracting characters. Who all die during their 15 minutes of fame (their allotted couple paragraphs…….).
There are so very many temporary / disposable occurrences & people — that by the time the author gets around to including the main actors again….. I’ve totally forgotten who is who.
This constant switching up makes it impossible to simply relax & get lost in the experience. The content of the paragraphs becomes painfully repetitive as well. All the characters, in West Coast locations, experiencing the same earthquake & tsunamis.
Thus — the ground opens up, swallows homes & humans, animals have big reactions, 50 foot walls of water crash (but first pull back to reveal, “the glistening sand in the afternoon sunshine……” ) over & over & over again…..
So, bottom line — this first book in the Wreckage Road series is a total waste of time.
And when a book pretty much stinks, like this one — I can still usually find something it offers which would be of interest to someone. I’m able to at least make pointed & specific recommendations…….
Unfortunately — that is not the case here. The only people who would benefit from the slog this story is — would be new authors. As Wreckage Road Book 1 offers a masterclass in how NOT TO craft fiction.
My first book from this author, and it won’t be the last. This was a edge of your seat book that you could not stop turning the pages. I had a hard time working while I had this book. Gives an explanation of what can occur with earthquakes, tsunami’s and volcano eruptions. Gives different people‘s perspectives of catastrophic events. Some is sad, but we’re rooting for our little group of survivors.. there is good and bad people in the book. Boy would this make a great movie! But I wonder are we gonna get a part two? It is definitely a book that is a keeper and a re-reader.
[3,5 stars] Yes, it was fun to read. But beware: don't read it if you REALLY don't like dogs, because there are a few of them mentioned. And fortunately none of them die. Although the writing was good and fluid and although I was looking for a book about catastrophies this was a bit too much. The first part of the book was nothing BUT every imaginable desaster. Earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanos, floods: you name it, it happened. This being said I still may pick up the sequel because I got to like Chloe and the rest of the gang :-)
Wreckage Road is the first book in the Wreckage series and is a non-stop thrill ride from beginning to end. Disparate groups of sympathetic characters come together to survive an unfathomable geological disaster brought about, at least in part, by the Cascadia subduction zone rupturing all the way down the west coast. Survivors face earthquakes, volcanoes, lahars, liquefaction, sink holes and more. Wreckage Road is the kind of book appreciable by any audience. 4/5 stars!
This is another of the disaster-type books. There's really bad stuff constantly going on including 9.6 quakes, fires, explosions, buldings collapsing, tsunamis and other things. There's people in various places when all this starts to happen and it follows what happens to them. There's a lot of explosions (gas pumps, trucks, etc.)
Deep pits open and swallow houses. Volcanic eruptions are ongoing. There's also illegal pot growers and, as usual, some people doing the best they can to survive.
There's a lot of action ongoing and the characters that are trying to survive are well done.
This book is the total package! A totally engaging, thrilling sequence of events that unfold at a fast clip. Vividly described creating a plausible series of events. I loved the main characters: kids and dogs. No loose ends and a satisfying conclusion. Well done Barbara Barker!
if you have never read a cataclysmic survival story before READ this one
An amazing tale of survival, gripping story telling, great characters. The descriptions of disaster after disaster absolutely enthralling and make you root for all the heroes canine and human….well worth the read.
I was present in Idaho during the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980. I vividly recall the extensive ash fallout and the significant environmental impact. The narrative was thoroughly engaging, maintaining my full attention throughout the account. The description was so vivid that I found myself experiencing a heightened sense of tension.
The pace in this one was fast from start to finish! It was very well written and having the dates and characters helped me keep up with everyone! This book was devastating. So much lost and heartbreak. I was on edge the entire book! Can’t wait to read the next one.
Lots of thrills and excitement as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions devastate Oregon and California. Great characters, both human and canine. Rather little human on human violence -- I think there were only two guns, and nobody got shot. Refreshing!
I really enjoyed this book. The dogs made it even more enjoyable, & the fact that they & the main characters all survived made it better. I'll read more by this author.
I wasn't sure about this book. There were so many characters to keep track of that I was afraid of getting confused. The author did a wonderful job of rounding out each character, making it easy. This book was non stop action. Loved the ending.
An Amazing novel! Reed, Chole, the children all caught in terrifying circumstances. The West Coast of The United States, a mass of destruction. What does one do? Read this intensifying story and read what happens to the group that becomes a family.
A very scary and realistic story of what happens when earthquakes hit the West Coast & the chaos that ensues. A story of a group of survivors trying to make it to safety. A great read! Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Great story created by relatable characters, believable science and real research
Excellent characters, a sound plot line and solid writing. This book is much better than most apocalyptic fiction available on Amazon. I’ll be reading more from this author.
Good plot for most of the book. Started with lots of story lines with those affected but then builds to the main story. Good characters and some good and bad outcomes. All about family being there, while seeing the selfish ways of the dad.
I have never read a better put together book than this one. While the disasters were awe inspiring, the over all story of humanity surviving because of caring, love, kindness,...and dogs!! What a weaver of characters the writer is. Highly recommend.
Well, written. I liked the characters of the story. This story is not about after the disasters but during the disasters. The peril they were in was non-stop. The story even had a "bad guy" in the form of the father of the kids.
This book started with a bang and kept on going. It was like sitting on the edge of your seat during a gripping movie. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series!
I think we were halfway through the book before we knew who was going to survive .. I enjoyed the main story but there was not enough of it... All a bit disjointed for me .. I won't be reading anymore of this series.
Great descriptions of people, places, and the actions that were taking place. Easy to read and imagine every event as it happened. I felt like I had seen a movie, so vivid were the words.
This Us The 4th book that I have read by Mrs Barker. It doesn't disappoint. If you like disaster stories, you will like this book, and her other series also.
