There’s no point in writing long reviews of this. Minus a few recurring characters, there is nothing to stop you from grabbing literally any volume of this series and just jumping into the mix.
Thus it comes down to whether the particular batch of chapters is funny or not. I can usually count on this for one good belly laugh per volume, but sadly that did not happen at all. Okay, the cat omake at the end was super close, but not quite enough.
There are some decent ones; the first chapter featuring the crepe truck is the kind of ridiculous escalation the series is best at, for example. There’s a haunted picnic that also takes a similarly wacky turn and becomes really wild.
But nothing especially tickled my funny bone, if we’re being honest. The over-reliance on the same gags does hurt it a bit, although the one about the lettuce where a normal housewife gets corrupted by Tatsu’s nonsense was a fun tweak to the norm.
As always, I was especially pleased that Miku got her own chapter. She never gets enough to do and her insane thought processes taking centre stage made for a nice diversion from the usual stuff.
Then the volume was over. There’s nothing here that I can directly point at and claim was crazy good, which is my yardstick for the series. Still, I have often thought this would never be good again and then it goes on to kill it the next volume, so we’ll see.
3 stars - still here, doing its thing, just without the zest it needs this many volumes on to stay fresh and interesting beyond a chuckle or two.
