After wanting to be a mermaid for years and not sprouting fins, Meaghan decided it was time to write a novel about a girl who is transformed into a mermaid. DROPLETS is Meaghan's debut novel and will be followed by two sequels to complete the series.
In her spare time, Meaghan enjoys reading and brainstorming ideas for other novels. When she isn't sitting down at her computer or reading a book, she can be found spending time with her family or Netflix binging to catch up on her favorite shows (normally while snacking on a bowl of goldfish crackers).

My mermaid obsession isn’t stopping at the moment so when I had the chance to read Droplets I jumped at the chance. Mermaid books are really hit and miss! and this one was a HIT all the way.

Lassie goes on a cruise with her family but things don’t go according to plan. I huge storm hits and throws poor Lissie overboard. She’s saved by something that isn’t so human…he changes her….. and waits till she’s 18 to claim her as his own, but Lissie has other ideas.

this was a great new take on a mermaid YA. An unusual one, and intriguing one it was brilliant. I love Lissie as a character! she came across very brave! I also loved the way Meaghan Raunchier describes the sea. I find its a very hard thing to do setting a book underwater but Meaghan pulled it off.

very addicting story and I cannot wait to start the sequel!

I love mermaids! I love mermaids! Did I mention I love mermaids?
I knew I would love this book as soon as I heard about it.
I think every girl, at one point or another, has dreamed of becoming a mermaid. Lissie Darrow is no exception. But the merman who changes her is dark, demanding, controlling… Evil. To keep her family safe, Lissie agrees to his ultimatum… at first.
Realizing that she can never be free of him, Lissie flees into the ocean and finds herself on a seemingly deserted island. But her adventure is only beginning.
Why did I love this book? I already told you. I love mermaids. But this isn't your typical girl is saved by a handsome merman and she falls in love with him story. The stakes are higher and the thrill is very real.
Needless to say, I will most certainly be reading the sequel!

I'm thinking this book is a 2.75 stars for me. I had some issues with the story from the beginning. Some things were just not realistic. I realize it is fantasy, but even human reactions were hard to believe at times. There were also a handful of grammatical errors and words used incorrectly. That being said(!!!), there are some really interesting aspects to this story! About halfway through the book, the story was set up and really got going. I will read the second book, Ripples, to see where it goes. The premise is interesting and unique compared to what I would normally read, even if it's a little raw. The instalove aside, I am interested to see where it goes. Hoping the next book is better, because the author does have an interesting plot!!!

I won a copy of this book from a giveaway that the author, Meaghan Rauscher, hosted in exchange for an honest review. With that being said, the thoughts and opinions I am about to lay out in this review are all mine and they are all honest and genuine.

When the opportunity to win a mermaid novel presented itself, I jumped right on it. I remember when I was around the age of 12, I had read a mermaid book (The Tail of Emily Windsnap) that I thoroughly enjoyed as a pre-teen. That was the one and only mermaid book I had read for a VERY long time. Just last year, I came across another mermaid book that piqued my interest (Forgive My Fins). I finished it quite quickly since I found that the content in it wasn't "mature" enough for me for lack of a better word. I wanted something a little bit more complex; more stimulating. Something that 20 year old me would enjoy rather than the 12 year old I was when I read my first mermaid book. Since I wasn't fully content with the experience, my search for a fitting mermaid book continued and alas!

I dove (lol, get it? okay...) into Droplets without knowing exactly what to expect of the book (but this is usually how I like to go into my fantasy books. They're more fun this way.) I was pulled right in from the very beginning. The prologue starts out very mysterious and ambiguous to say the least. Now THAT'S my kind of introduction. I love when a book starts out with a story which you know will become important later on in the plot but is just not yet clear to you. I think this kind of opening is what keeps me reading a book.

I, myself, coming from a big family, personally very much appreciated the strong family dynamic that Lissie, our protagonist, has with her father and her siblings. I understand that this is a personal thing, but when a book has any sort of family dynamic presented, the book automatically becomes dear and close to my heart and makes it all the more easier for me to read on. In a way, it just makes the reading experience and plot line more real and relatable on a personal level.

One of the many things that really impressed me about this book is the way Rauscher was able to add in little details here and there that, although minor, later on proves to be actually quite important and worth paying attention to. A small detail in particular that comes into mind is the way Rauscher describes the merman like he's "marble"

"His skin was mesmerizing, shimmering as the rain splattered against it harshly. But the water did not seem to soak into his flesh; instead, it ran down his face and shoulders without the slightest glitch as though he was marble."

When I read fantasy books, knowing I am about to enter a universe foreign to my own, I expect the author to describe this world and its inhabitants in a way that I can see and feel them for myself as if I am a part of the story. And this is exactly what Rauscher did for me in this book. Quite impressively, too.

To add on to the many impressive qualities in this book, I was specifically in awe with how gracefully Rauscher transitioned between the two opposing worlds; from a typical small town where a lot of things are routine, to a completely different and beautiful world full of magic and countless possibilities. I thought that the transition was very well done and it honestly just flowed very nicely. Instead of going from the human world and then smack dab in the middle of the world of mermaids and mermen, Rauscher eases us nicely from one world to the other.

Now, the one and only reason why I am giving this book 4 stars out of 5 is because I found that at times, it dragged on a little bit. Here and there I found that some things could have been completely left out and unmentioned and the story nonetheless would have still been just as strong if not stronger. But no matter, I didn't mind too much as this honestly just prolonged the book for me (I put off finishing this book for a few days because I just wasn't ready to leave the world yet as I don't have the second book!)

What I am most proud to say about this book, though, is that I was able to enjoy it as an adult; as a 20 year old. The setting, the characters, the plot line...they were all complex and mysterious enough for me to stay intrigued throughout the entire book. Not only are we taken to a world foreign to our own, Rauscher also provides us with what I thought was quite profound merfolk history. The author provides a stable foundation that I think is quite important when reading books that has a mysterious and complex settings and plot line. I mean, as much I love ambiguity in a book, I still want to know important things that will help me soak in the story as I read through!

Before I end this review... I just want to say... Oh. My. God. Patrick!!!! Ugh. Okay. That's all.

Lissie and her family’s annual cruise takes a horrific turn when a storm battles and batters their boat. Lissie is thrown overboard, only to be saved by a monster who wants one thing: Her. The cruel man, who has fins like a merman when he hits the water, changes Lissie through a painful process. Having misjudged her age, the merman leaves her until her eighteenth birthday, when he will come back to claim her. Not wanting to be someone’s slave, Lissie will run and set many events into motion…

I was so impressed by this book. On first picking it up, I totally thought it would be one of those YA books where this mysterious and hard-edged man (merman in this case) would come and force Lissie into something. Later they would fall in love and it would be just another Beauty and the Beast knockoff. This book was nothing like that and it was refreshing. This story had so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. I really can’t say how much I was relieved that this book didn’t take the turn where Lissie fell in love with the first guy that crossed her path.

The mermaid mythology in this book was really good. I liked the subtle differences to the mythology that I have heard so many times. Even though most of it isn’t known/explained till later in the book, I didn’t feel confused. I really enjoyed that Lissie got to be in the heart of it all and learn so much.

Lissie was a great character. I’m so glad she didn’t just stand by and be a victim. She went out and tried to change the fate forced upon her. I liked that she was strong, but she had moments of weakness. Her strength wasn’t annoying like it can so often be in YA books, where the main girl can do anything and everything. She wasn’t perfect and I love to find characters that have a few flaws. It makes them more real.

I really loved Patrick in this book. He was just amazing, but I won’t say too much more for fear of spoilers.

The ending to this book was really satisfying. It made me want to read more and it does leave the reader with some unanswered questions. I really enjoyed the pacing at the end and that it doesn’t just drop off after the main action is over. There’s a small bit of breathing room after all the action and I always love when books do that.

After finishing this book, I couldn’t wait to start the next one, but I have hesitated based on the synopsis of the next one. I’m sure it will be just as excellent as this one, but I just haven’t picked it up. Regardless of that, I really want to read the next book and discover what happens next.

There was a few good reviews for Droplets on Goodreads, not to mention Casey Ann's raving review, and figured I'd give it a try with my fancy new Kindle Unlimited subscription. A little mermaid adventure and romance? Sure, why not.

Unfortunately I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up with this book because it was an exceptionally average YA. Fans of Red Queen (ie. not me) would like this book because it was almost exactly the same but with mermaids.

The idea is cute enough: the pretty, well-loved human girl is claimed by the evil merman and runs away to escape her fate of being prisoner to whatever despicable fantasies or plans he has. She finds herself at an island with the only inhabitant being another human, whom she ends up fancying. But the ghost of Morven and his icy presence is never far from her thoughts. For fear of putting her new friends at risk (like the brave soldier she is at seventeen), she doesn't tell them a scrap of detail until it's spelt-out for her that she's safe and she really needs to tell them now.

Run away, capture, repeat. The good thing is that this was a really quick read and I didn't let myself dwell on the details that irritated me - like all of the classic YA superiority complex:
I had a right to know what he was thinking.  If he was angry with me, then he should tell me to my face.  A small part of me worried about what would happen when he surely rejected me  Somehow this friend had crept deeper into my heart than I thought.

Or the possessiveness that comes with YA insta-love:

"You don't intend to fight Morven, do you?"
"Of course I do."
"Patrick!" My reaction was immediate.  "You can't!  He'll kill you!"

Full of repetitive thoughts, a lot of running in circles with ideas, and starring the complete wimp of a main character. Lissie can't seem to stand on her own two feet (heh - see what I did there?) or protect herself when she should totally be able to. I don't know if she's just thick and comes to realize her potential with the rest of the series but I don't particularly care enough to read more. Give it a shot if you want and let me know how the second book ends!

First of all, I'd like to thank the Author, Meaghan Rauscher for giving me a free copy. I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

To start off, I'd like to comment on the cover page on which I think is really appropriate and eye catching.

So, this book is about an innocent, young girl named Lissie who had a wonderful life before she was forced to become a mermaid by this powerful merman called Morven who, in my opinion, acts all tough-man-who-knows-more-than-you-do. Then Lissie escapes or try, rather, from the life Morven wants for her. Then she meets Patrick in a secluded island who, by the way, sort of remind me of someone from Hunger Games (wink wink). And basically, Lissie and Patrick fall in love with each other amd Morven just ruins everything.

I couldn't quite say that I ship Lissie and Patrick. Their lovey-dovey scenes are there but ib my opinion, they're too short to make me feel all "YEESSSSSSSSSSSSS". Though, in the end, when they were captured by Morven, I really felt the intensity of their affection for each other especially when Lissie what brought to the cell adjoining Patrick's.

All in all, like the others, I think that the story is fast paced resulting to the feeling of being unattached to the lovers. The middle part could use the a little more interesting scenes or an expansion of how they really developed the relationship and as well as for others. I liked the plot because it has captured the essence of being a mermaid though I would want to have read Lissie being a great singer and all and put significance to that talent of hers.

In the end, I enjoyed reading it although it took me a while. I'd love to find out what happens next to the story!

I have not read very many Mermaid stories (Maybe 3). A friend of mine recommended this book to me. I started to read it and the beginning is very slow. The author takes a lot of time to set the "stage" of the story and introducing the characters.

Now, I have finished book 1 and even though I only gave it 3 stars, I STILL think it is something you should read. I would make my rating like 3.5. It was still good, just not as good as #2 (Which I really really love!)

Further into the book, the story becomes better. Meaghan Rauscher begins to grab you into the story and you get hooked on what the main character (Lissie) is getting into and how she deals with what she is given. Even though Lissie is very scared, she still has a lot of guts and doesn't sink into being terrified. She does have a backbone and will stand up for herself - which is good!

The writing style as my friend says in her review is "raw". There were some misspellings and word choices that didn't make a whole lot of sense. These in the beginning kinda took me away from the actually story. But don't let it stop you! the story if very good and even better in the second! I am so frustrated that I have to wait until June 10th to read the third!!

All and all This book was good. And it should be read and I am sure many will enjoy this book as I did.

Guys, I know that I usually give books 5 stars. It's because I just have never found a bad book. But this one definitely deserved those 5 stars! Droplets is one of the best debut books I have ever read! The writing was just fantastic, I was actually surprised that this was Meaghan's first novel! Her descriptions were so vivid that I felt as if I were standing right there watching the story unfold before my eyes.

I simply couldn't put the book down! Each chapter pulled me in deeper and deeper.

This story has everything: action, drama, suspense, and even had a love story! (Y'all, I seriously ship Patrick & Lissie!!!) Each character was so well developed. They each had some type of hidden past that kept every moment or conversation they had with Lissie so intriguing. Loved this new take on mermaids, like how they can control their powers and walk on land. This was the first mermaid book I have read, and it definitely has me hooked. The plot, the characters, everything. I loved it all! Can't wait to read the sequel!

I quite liked this book, the story line and plot was good but I didn't feel as connected to the characters as I thought I would. Plus the story is slightly slow paced so it takes a while for anything to actually happen. I liked some parts of the book more than others.

I did however like the relationship that developed between Patrick and Lissie. The fact that they had both been through similar ordeals. I am quite intrigued to read the next one because I would like to know what happens to Patrick and if they do end up being the ultimate weapon together. However unlike some series I read I don't feel like I have to read it.

I thought that the character Morven was actually built quite well.

All in all not a bad read.

It's not terribly written and would have appealed to me when I was about 12 but I found a lot of it quite repetitive and tedious.
The pacing was odd, skimming over things that could have been made more of and dragging in other respects. It would probably have scored higher with me (like a 2.5 rounded to a 3) if I hadn't also been angry at yet another cliffhanger/open ending. I'm getting quite irate with authors not wrapping up their stories in an attempt to pressgang you into buying the next instalment. It's unprofessional. If your story is strong enough, you can wrap it up and people will buy the next part anyway.
The redeeming feature of this was Rauscher's adequate command of the English language and her great imagination.

I enjoyed reading this book.
I love how Lissie took control of her life and never stops fighting. Her passion and motivation to stay herself is inspiring. This book is probably one of the better mermaid books that I have encountered recently, so that's always fun.

Worthwhile not perfect

This is a much better book than I first expected but somehow it left me unsure if I want to continue. It is well written and there are some parts that make you want to root for the characters. But, and maybe this is my personal bias, trilogies that get an entire way through one of the three books and nothing character defining or breakthrough has happened, rarely have enough juice to see me through to the end of book 3. Maybe I’m not patient enough. I can see that this book has such good potential but it took all the way through book one and I feel like some good things could happen but overall I am underwhelmed. I would just expect to see some kind of development of character arc going on but so far whatever character development/change there was appeared to happen in the last two pages of the book. So yeah, not sure if I have the patience to go to book two or if I am going to slog through it to see if the characters begin to grow and change at all. I think I probably will, because the basic storyline is pretty magical.

Also I understand this is a self published book, so no one should take my next words as condemnation for the work as a whole. There are some obvious and glaring spelling and grammatical errors. Not many, but some. Overall worth the read, though I would not call it wonderful. It was good and as long as book two gets going well, I will probably read the whole series. I used to have this feeling that starting to read a book was like a contract that I will finish the whole thing no matter how badly it is written, but after I started reading on Wattpad I realized I don’t have time for all of the ridiculous stories that somehow end up as a kind of word vomit in the world. So now I know that if I don’t feel a desire to keep reading after chapter 5, I probably won’t ever. So I promise that much of my effort for book 2 and we’ll see how it goes from there.

So I came across this book when I was looking for something to read. It sounded intriguing when I read what the book was about. This book took me a lot longer to read than I normally get through a book. With that said the story line was great but I definitely think that the main character should have become a lot stronger. I did not like reading the fact the she was so submissive and seemed afraid of the world. There was a point in the book that she stated that she has accepted her fate however she did not do anything about it. She still ran scared. I am not sure if I am ready to read the rest of the series if she is going to not change and really accept who and what she is.

Unnecessary, boring, confusing

It started off really nice but as it went on it just got confusing and boring..it’s very unrealistic we’ll it is a mermaid book but I more so mean that her personality was unrealistic the things she did was just odd and didn’t make sense and most of all unnecessary…she was way to comfortable way to fast it was just weird. Had a lot of potential tho. Sad.

Not my normal read but I thought it looked interesting. I was not disappointed. On an annual cruise with her family while she is singing to herself she begins to hear a strange murmur across the surface of the ocean. Unbeknown to her this is her first encounter. The next evening throws her family in the midst of a horrific storm and she is swept overboard. She is saved by the same creature who she heard the night before. He now holds the key to her future and changes her life forever.

Marvelous Story!!!

Very creative, and perhaps the inspiration for the current TV series "Siren", although that plot is different but still about mermaids....good plotline, well-written with good grammar (important stuff in a written narrative!, and not always done well, so this is refreshing!), and one never knows what's coming next! I eagerly await the next installment!

Giving it 5 stars even though there were quite a few editing errors in the first few pages and scattered about this self-published debut.

This book is great! Definitely NOT Disney mermaids! This series should be made into a series of movies. The books read like movies. I have re-read the series during 2 different summers because I so love being transported to this world.

Great Story!! Loved it!

I disliked not knowing what the purpose of the forcibly changed merfolk was exactly. It's still unclear and I disliked the cruelty of Morven and the Hyven. But a very good story really loved the first 10-15 chapters. They were well written and it's an enticing mer story.
