insanely good short series, love the exploration of loneliness, isolation, and gender. the villain is relatable and it was such a unique spin on the magical girl genre. ARGH, HE JUST DIDN'T WANT TO BE ALONE. That trope in anime and manga ALWAYS hits me 😭 I do wish they explored the gender themes more but I understand the struggle when your manga story is cut short by publishers
Unfortunate how rush it was, but it kept with some interesting themes that did struggle to make its landing but hey it was there and cute! I really wish they explored more of their dynamics, rather than the plot because the BL potential would've been niceeee lmao
2.5 stars rounded up because I’m nice and the earlier volumes were fun.
This really heads off in some weird directions and generally decides to address very few of its more interesting points. When it was discussing gender fluidity at the start of this one I was genuinely excited, as that’s been the most intriguing angle here by far.
In the end, however, it handles it about a step above Ranma 1/2, but that’s not really saying a lot, much as I enjoy that series.
Instead, the focus is on military action and cloning and secret societies and ultimate weapons. Which, for all its own faults and excesses, the super grim Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka handled in more interesting fashion.
It isn’t funny enough to get the laughs it’s going for, the drama is pretty old hat (here comes the ‘sick loved one we must do evil for’ trope again), the characters thin, and there’s barely any action. It doesn’t feel like a good payoff for something that was always dubiously plotted at the best of times.
It’s not bad, but there’s a whole series to be made from its more interesting points and almost nothing done with them for the entire volume. I liked the first two volumes and the sentiment here sometimes carries it, but if I never read this finale I don’t think I would have missed a thing.
Yeah this was def a canceled series. However I feel like it stuck the landing better than a lot of manga series I've read! It's rushed this whole volume and a lot gets introduced and wrapped up too quickly... but the last act wow. It's just... nice there's a really cute splash panel with the gang together and it just made me go AHG no why is this the last volume! Seriously this could have gone on so much longer and I would have loved it. I love the characters and I love the magical girl (and boy) stuff. Anyways way too much stuff was brought up in this volume and not resolved well. The water spirit who was inside Yuzuru? Huh? What's her deal? Also the way they defeat the final boss, just screams yeah we ran out of time. They basically just told him to stop doing unethical experiments This volume feels really focused on Suzuru and Misaki, with Hiro being not the star focus anymore. I did really enjoy their arcs and stories though ngl! But I was like wait isn't this Hiro's story too. Also the magical boy sorry I forgot their name T-T, I loved them I wanted more of them. They don't have a backstory and are the only one in the team that's just kinda there. Boo T-T anywyas ARGH I'm so mad this is over I want to live in this world a little longer. Hopefully I can find some magical girl manga that scratches this itch.
The way every plot thread and plan comes together is so fun in this final volume!! Lots of beautiful moments and some directions geared towards that I really was hoping they'd go for!
The resolution feels more quickly slapped together than the climax, which I actually really liked, but I still found it mostly fulfilling and it truly was a joy to read!
Beautiful work and happy for what this book series became!
Magical Girl Incident is a fun, goofy action series with sweet moments too. The story is relatively simple but it has its fair share of excitement. It's rather short, so it's worth a read if you're interested.
i'm sorry, they're childhood best friends and follow each other in life and one of their counterparts is in love with the other??? They're in love your honor
11/25 A bit odd but a unique take on a magical girl story with a Miyazaki ending (no villains). Definitely read all 3 volumes together, having a few months between 2 and 3 kind of ruined the impact.
