Read the whole series...

Chapters: 21
Status: Finished
Genres: Webtoon, Shoujo, Drama, Romance, Slice of Life.
Reading Order: Left to right.

The Story:
''People cannot live forever. Considering this, people will grow old and become adults. For their convenience, people say that the criteria for adulthood is when you turn twenty one...if we assume that criteria is correct. Are we considered adult? Or are we not?''
There are three main characters here. And this story is about all of them.

One of them is a girl named Yun-lee. Due to a traffic accident, Yun-lee looses 2 precious years of her life, the time period between 19 and 21 years old. She feels like her life has become a mess and the time froze at nineteen for her. Is she really an adult when she feels exactly the same when she was 19 years old even though she is 21 now? Wasnt she supposed to become and adult the moment she turned into 21?

No, she doesnt feel like an adult. Because she missed her own transition and didnt become an adult like she was supposed to. Because Yun-lee feels really misarable. Because there is a huge gap in her life. Because her life is become so monotone. To catch up to where society dictates she needs to be, she now has to spend her whole day going to a prep school to take the college entrance. She feels like that's the only way she can close that gap.

The other character is a boy named Dong-hwi. He is exactly where Yun-lee feels stuck at: at the age of 19. But instead of hurrying to become an adult, Dong-hwi wants to treasure his precious youth and have as much fun and excitement as possible before he becomes 21. If people say you become an adult when you turn into 21, why not have fun before that, right? So, he takes a whole year of to do whatever he wants with his life.

So how does these two polar opposites come together, you ask? Thanks to the third one, of course! Meet the last but probably the most important character of this story: CATS!

TA-DA.

''If you just watch them for a moment, you would know that these cats are trying their hardest in a desolate environment, where a slip of water is scarce and they're left alone on the road even when struck by a car...Even though they live such a hard life, I have never seen them having a hard time. You always know cats are looking at the wold with confidence, right? As if they are fine with it...''
Despite their different desires, Dong-hwi Yun-lee realize they do share 1 common goal. That is to help the stray cats around the neighborhood by feeding them, giving them temporary shelter, etc. Through their common love for cats, they are able to influence one another. Ju tells Lee the joy of having fun and Lee tells Ju the importance of responsibility. By the end, their personalities mix and what starts as a beautiful friendship turns into a beautiful romance.

They DO make a great couple. Plus, they do look cute together ;)

Art:

I also recommend watching this very beautiful and non-spoilery video

Some of my favorite quotes:
“If sharing my passion and love makes me happy, and I can help someone in the slightest way, wouldn’t that be amazing?”

“The life of humans, with sympathy for other living beings...if we can travel halfway between those two paths..How precious that would be. I would be able to feel that with all my heart.”

“I thought I could so much more when I become an adult. But at times like this...I dont even know what to say. Could you really do more things when you become and adult?...There are definitely things that kids cant do, but adults can. But is it only because they are adults? No, this is not like that...”

Final Thoughts: Simplicity is Beauty! The story was so innocent, cute, heartwarming and relaxing! I guarantee it will leave you smiling and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside ;)

No complications or third parties, no exaggerated dramas, no over-the-top characters, nothing too much that'll state "this is clearly fiction". That's what I fell for this webtoon anyway: BEING SIMPLE. Yet, it still manages to deliver a great story without the fuss.

Review for the complete series

Due to an accident, twenty-one year old Yuni had to take time off from school and now feels like she is lagging behind others her age. While she dwells on the time she's lost, she meets nineteen year old and recent school graduate Dong-hui who is making the best of his time before he becomes a legal adult. Together they take care of stray cats who teach them both life lessons and their outlook on their future.

As a cat lover, I'm sorry to say that I had this sitting on my shelf for about a decade and I wasn't even aware that this had such a strong cat focus. I expected this to be a cute and quiet slice of life story and that is generally speaking what it was, but it definitely exceeded my expectations in all aspects.

Our main characters Yuni and Dong-hui are each on the opposite side of the legal age of 20 - a gap that really isn't particularly big and yet they have very different attitudes towards it. It is almost as if they themselves have drawn a line between the two ages of which they expect some fundamental change once they cross it. Through spending time together and understanding issues in their surroundings, such as the stray cats, both learn what maturity and responsibility really means and how maybe it's not just a number.

The story around the street cats was realistic, sad and hopeful. Street animals in general pose a problem in the sense that they don't receive enough care - some people find them a nuisance while others try to help them. But occasionally feeding a stray animal ultimately doesn't lead to much and it's a big commitment to truly make a difference. As much as one would like to, animal lovers don't usually have the capacity to take in all strays they encounter. This story really took a look at what realistic steps one could take to improve the lives of street cats which also included confrontation with others who consider them a pest. The story gives a really nuanced view on how conflicts work and how, with trying to understand both sides, you can possibly find a compromise.

I am probably in the minority but I prefer tradition black and white comics as opposed to full colour which is now more popular among web novels. I find a little of the refined and detailed art gets lost in the coloured versions. By and large, I think this applies here too - it is not quite as refined as black and white ones are, however, it is beautiful in other ways; there are a fair few street and nature views and they are so beautifully drawn. The atmosphere just jumps right out of the pages you can almost hear the wind in the leaves.

The romance felt quite secondary but that's ok - they are a cute and entirely drama free couple who simply work well together. In any case, I enjoyed both main characters - what's not to love about fellow cat lovers who put their time and effort into improving cats' lives?

“Pleasant weather, elegant cherry blossoms, the tickling sound of a cat's cry, the scent of coffee and a slightly awkward conversation maybe this is how it feels like to be in twenty.”

"If you just watch them for a moment, you would know that these cats are trying their hardest in a desolate environment, where a slip of water is scarce and they're left alone on the road even when struck by a car... Even though they live such a hard life, I have never seen them having a hard time. You always know cats are looking at the wold with confidence, right? As if they are fine with it..."

Nineteen, Twenty-One is a beautiful story. This was my first manhwa (a Korean comic) and I am glad that I had such a great introduction to manhwa. Nineteen, Twenty-One is not licensed in english yet but you can still read fan translations here. With a sweet story by "John" and the gorgeous art by "Jenny" this manhwa is most certainly worth the read. Everyone will be able to find something they like in Nineteen, Twenty-One.

Yun-lee is a girl who has experienced a terrible car crash, leaving her in a coma for a year. She is almost twenty-one now and she has lost a whole year of life. She has missed out on the days where one can be a child and carefree. Now she is an adult. People her age are unfamiliar to her and she can't connect with them. Yun-lee is absolutely miserable. But there is something that she finds solace in. Cats. She loves them. She uses the money she needs to buy lunch in order to feed them cat food everyday.

One day Yun-lee comes meets a nineteen year-old boy named Ju Dong-hwi who also has a love for cats. Yun-lee thinks he is a bit weird but becomes good friends with him. Dong-hwi helps her feel like she is living the year that she has missed.

Nineteen, Twenty-One is not just a love story but a story about two people finding their places and what they want in life. This manhwa is full of meaning and even the cats are a metaphor. That isn't to say that Nineteen, Twenty-One is not a cute love story though. The interactions between Yun-lee (a.k.a. Nuna) and Dong-hwi were always sweet and rather humourous at times. Their different personalities contrast greatly. Yun-lee is very quiet and a little bit shy awhile Dong-hwi is loud and childish but this only enhances my enjoyment of their interactions. A lot of them made me smile and some of them just made me LOL.

There are also many lessons in this story. Try to understanding your enemies, have compassion for others, help out when you are needed, and other important things. The messages aren't blatantly thrown at you but rather told in a very subtle way. This manhwa requires the reader to pay attention to the way the characters act in order to see the messages.

I will also say that I think that this manhwa would be perfect for cat lovers or just regular pet lovers. There are a lot of cats. And even though they are a metaphor in this story they are still really, really, really cute.

description

I really loved Nineteen, Twenty-One and I believe it would be loved not just by pet-lovers but by many other people. It's a really fun, cute read and I can't recommend this enough!

Maybe it’s just because I’m not used to reading manga, but I felt that this was kind of weird and lackluster. It was mostly about feeding cats and it was just kind of weird. I got the manga for free so I figured I would read it to see if I liked it since I didn’t have to pay anything for it.

This might be for someone else, but I do not think that it was for me.

Synopsis from mangakakalot.com

Yun-lee is a girl who is carrying a huge emotional scar in her heart. Due to an accident, she lost 2 precious years of her life, the time period between 19 and 21 years old. Her life is empty. She is miserable, but still attending a preparatory school in an attempt to catch up with all the time she has lost. Suddenly, one day on her way to feed some stray cats, she comes across a young man who seems to have what she has lost... the period between 19 and 21 years old. Please address this work as a Manhwa (Korean word for cartoons) Webtoon from Naver

In this story, we meet the characters Yong Lee, 21 years old and Dong Hwi, 19 years old. Both characters are different and their differences were molded into a meaningful story of life and moving forward.

Due to the accident, Yong Lee had to spend two years recovering from a car accident. These years from 19 to 21 are very important as this is where people evolve into adults as they discover a lot of things through their experiences and also the years of graduating from high school and going to university but all of these were delayed in Yong Lee’s life. Now, she is 21 years old and is still starting to do things that were supposed to be done 2 years ago. She lives thinking of the days wasted.

Yong Lee meets Dong Hwi, a 19 year old who is so free spirited and plans to spend a year carelessly before he becomes 20 or an adult.

These 2 characters teach each other what life is. Both changed as they learned from each other.
My favourite in this comic is the addition of the stray cats which Yong Lee and Dong Hwi take care of. These cats make the story more honest and meaningful as the writer/artist relates people’s lives to stray cats.

It was a very interesting and realistic read. I had to reflect on myself after reading it. I hope more people would read this amazing comic/manga.

Plenty, plenty of cats. CATS. And very well drawn! Otherwise, the story was focused on stray cats, the problems they have in the city and the problems (nasty) people have with them. I really enjoyed how the 2 characters built a friendship smoothly and how they tried to help in a nice way. I suppose the point was also to focus on the difference between being a teenager and an adult, but for me it has nothing to do with age, so I wasn't really interested in this part. Good art, unusual story and only 2 volumes, it's a nice discovery.

The life of an animal, without self pity & simply devoted to the time given
The life of a human, with sympathy for other living beings
If we can travel halfway between those two paths
Dont you think our lives would be wonderful

..

I might be creating meanings on my own but..
Whenever I follow their footsteps, it seems as if they let me come across wonderful sceneries & nice people

Quiet and meditative - its musings struck me on a personal level as a stray dog lover..

I'm not into cats but this manwha made me realize that these stray cats, and even stray dogs, are really living in a miserable situation. I like how the two characters, Yun-lee and Dong-hwi, gave their best to provide for these strays even if it takes a lot of time, work and even money. In the process, they both learnt a lot from their journey of feeding and rescuing these stray cats. They also found both a friend and a lover in each other which, I think, is like a gift or their good karma from taking good care of these strays.

I have to agree that the characters and the cats in this are cutesy enough but it's just the plot only focuses much more on the couple feeding stray cats then just deep diving on their backgrounds. Pretty much plot holes here and there basically, otherwise a nice manhwa to waste time with!

I knew very little about this manga going in as I just got it for free on a whim. I’m very intrigued by the relationship between the two main characters and what the plot has to offer in future volumes/chapters. I loved the art style of this manga and the CATS!!! I will continue on with this series at some point as I want to see the friendship grow between the two main characters and find out what happened to Yuni.

Penyampaian jalan cerita seiras cara penyampaian manga After The Rain. Kisahnya santai, hanya berkisahkan memberi makan kepada kucing-kucing liar, tetapi garapan pelukis dan penulis dalam mengangkat makna sebenar perjalanan hidup ketika usia mencecah 20 tahun itu sangat mengujakan.

IF YOU LOVE CATS YOU SHOULD TOTALLY READ THIS OHMYGAHD haha! ♥

I just found out about this webtoon I think last month? And I'm just very happy to read this precious cute webtoon :)

This webtoon doesn't just let you have feels for the two main character's love story but it teaches us to care more about the animals around us, which made me like this because of me being an animal lover (especially cats!).

This story is about a girl, a cat lover, who is in the tip of her life because of her disease then she meets this guy who likes to feed the stray cats. Stop right there! you think this is something like TFIOS or any depressing stories? NO. Actually this is very cute and sweet so you can read this if you're having a bad time or in your free time (since this is just a fast read).

The Problem is, the summary/plot of this webtoon will make you misunderstand what the story will be. I mean it says something in the summary that the girl has a disease and she's like needs a treatment but the story doesn't really focused in that but it focuses on how she lives her life while counting her remaining days, then BAAM CATS and her sweet life with this boy. Another thing is, it feels like it...lacks, it feels like you want more and you want to know what happens next. The ending is a (kind of spoiler alert) happy ending and that's a good thing I guess but it feels cut.

But overall, this is very cute and sweet at the same time and makes you take a stroll around the street where stray cats are at and wait for a cute guy to just popped out while feeding the adorable cats haha! So yeah, I recommend it if you have a free-nothing-to-do-time and likes to make your day smile :)

AWW THESE BOOKS. (there is only 2)

I loved the art and story of the whole thing. It made me sincerely happy and it was very light and fluffy. Being only 21 chapters long, it was a very quick read. I loved the art style and the way it is formatted. The characters are very likable, and I know I would love to know someone like Dong-hwi. His character traits are just fantastic because of how he can go from adorably childish to mature. He can catch you off guard in those moments and that's what so great. He reminded me of Haru from My Little Monster (also another great series). Yun-lee reminded me of myself. She is fairly quiet and seemed to be depressed before meeting Dong-hwi (even though there was no clarification) and she also had a certain atmosphere of kindness. They both share a love for cats which was a plus and I love the other minor characters (unfortunately I forgot their names already). There is a coffee shop owner that also share a love for cats. There was a woman who enjoyed planting flowers in places that is not her land. There was her son who hated the strays. Even being minor characters, they have showed a great significance to the story. The coffee shop owner is someone who feeds strays and cares for them occasionally and has a neutral opinion towards them (yet leans more to the cats side). The woman was anti- cat at first and changed her opinion later in the story, which represents change. The little boy made a mistake and he fixed it, which shows that damage can be fixed.

This was the first time I read a Korean story and I really enjoyed it. I wonder what other stroies this author has written.

This is a heart-warming story, really sweet.
What makes us an adult? Is it just the age? That is one main issue of the manhwa, as well as finding something to care for and seeing things from different point of views. How do you communicate with someone who detests what you value?!

Because of a traffic accident Yun-lee loses the time when she was twenty, she had to stay in a hospital and could not go to school. Now she is twenty-one and spends her whole day in school, except for her lunch break. Everyday, in her break, she spends her lunch money to buy food for the stray cats. One day she meets Dong-hwi, who is nineteen and just graduated from school. He wants to spend the time before his twentieth birthday enjoying to be a child and also feeds the stray cats. He even numbered them all the way through and plays with them.
From that day on Yun-lee ramdomly meets Dong-hwi every day and together they feed the cats. Slowly they build a friendship and encourage each other's passion for the stray cats. But there are a lot of people who want the cats do disappear and together Yun-lee and Dong-hwi decide to do something for their strays.

Neyt to the sweet story, the tender style is awesome. Just perfect for this kind of story. Plot, style and atmosphere are a perfect match.
I give it 4,5 stars.

Nineteen, Twenty-One is a beautifully drawn sweet story -- with a bit of humor! -- about a girl who, after an accident, had to put her life on hold while she healed. Now, at 21 years old, she is trying to catch up with her schooling and get her life back on track. Though she's uncomfortable with being -- what she feels is -- too old for school, she gets happiness from feeding stray neighborhood cats.

She meets a 19 year old boy who is also feeding the cats, and they strike up a friendship. Over the course of the comic they meet other people who both love and hate cats. They decide to start on a bit of a quest to make people love neighborhood cats instead of hate them. And through it all their relationship grows.

It is well written, and very well paced. Each chapter is fantastic and each page a delight to the eyes. Truly beautiful. One of my favorite slice-of-life comics.

I'm sure cat lovers out there could relate but I'm no cat lover. I dont really see the relevance of their age when officially becoming an adult. It is somehow an okay story. Maybe I'm gonna give 1.5 stars but the art makes up for it.

I would really appreciate it then if there is more romance between the two characters and if we got so see like a couple of years after the story.

There are also a alot of irrelevant stuff. Like the heroine's accident. We thought that its going to be a big plot twists but nope. Light dramatization of stuff.

I enjoyed every single page of this webtoon manhwa and I'm so thankful that such a story was made. I used to always feel bad about these cats out on the streets back when I was younger and now that feeling is getting back into me and I feel like I have the power to do something as simple as buying a can of food to feed a stray cat!
What I liked about this manhwa is that the love story wasn't the main topic as I've seen in every single manhwa I've read! That might be the reason why I've enjoyed it so much.
Read it! You're certainly not going to regret it!!!

The cats... If you just watch them for a moment, you would know that these cats are trying their hardest in a desolate environment, where a slip of water is scarce and they're left alone on the road even when struck by a car...Even though they live such a hard life, I have never seen them having a hard time. You always know cats are looking at the world with confidence, right? As if they are fine with it...

Totally adorable! >_<
The characters, the cats, and the flowers are all so beautiful and lovable. The story is heart-warming, though the theme is quite simple.

I don't know whether this is the characteristic of manhwa, but this one employs a lot of white spaces. Sure they make the book look simple and clean, but it's kind of a waste of space in my opinion.
