Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in a never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

✅ Strong and steady couple
✅ Characters
✅ Pace and action
✅ Plot
✅ World-building and magic
✅ New characters and alliances
✅ Kate and Roland’s confrontation
❗️❗️Trigger warnings: deaths and mild gore

“So far I had the god of evil and the god of terror on my side. My good-guy image was taking a serious beating. Maybe I should recruit some unicorns or kittens with rainbow powers to even us out.”

This book was mostly about Kate andRoland preparing for their big confrontation. Kate knows she is not nearly as powerful as her father. Still, the big confrontation is coming, and Kate needs to find a way to defeat her father, or else either Curran or their future son would be killed by Roland, as was said by the witches who got visions about it. Honestly, parts of the book felt pointless, and overall, it seemed like a long setup for the next book. However, I still enjoyed it very much and couldn’t stop listening to and reading it.

Kate’s struggle with her powers and negative emotions was not my favorite aspect of the book. She changed and grew so much since the first book; it felt like a setback to have her struggle with her anger and wanting to overpower anyone who opposed her. Thankfully, she eventually got it under control, and in the end, it showed how strong she was and how far she had come since we were first introduced to her.

Curran and Kate continue to show how great they are for each other. They have a strong relationship, always have each other’s backs, and I love their steadiness in the past few books. It took a while for them to get together and trust each other, but once they got there, there was little drama and no pointless obstacles to their romance. They also have their struggles, which makes their couple realistic. They are stronger together, and while Curran is not my favorite love interest, he is the perfect match for Kate, and I love how well they fit together.

She was the villain in the story the first time Kate and her met, but it had been hinted since that she was not as evil as Kate thought. Seeing Erra willing to help Kate against Roland, as she wanted to see her family survive and thrive, was wholesome. The fact that she gave so many people a mild heart attack when she popped into existence next to them was amusing.

The wedding preparation bits were funny. The more I see of Roman, the more I like him, and he added a nice comedic aspect to the book, without being over the top. I hope to see more of him in the next books of the series and/or the spinoff books. I am also happy that we get to see more of Julie in the last few books.

Maybe I was just too tired to be doing audio, or maybe it's doing three of these back to back, or or maybe I just didn't realize how annoying some of Kate's behaviours were until I had to hear it over and over again (not her fault, it's one of the particular conflicts of this instalment).. or it's all of it. But I was definitely over the whole repetition of Kate and Roland's spats.

Almost everything else around it was good, though. Enjoyed having more of Roman and Christopher in the spotlight, a certain aunt who makes a return, and the Julie complication finally being out in the open.

Also. Kate in a tutu. Curran eating things he shouldn't. Classic moments that were good fun to experience in this medium.

And of course, big fan of the epilogue of course. F i n a l l y.

This book was so good! I love how they asked Roman to officiate the wedding. The relationship formed with Erra (a good redemption story). A major revelation of Christopher is made in this book. There is new baby, the continuous building of their village, and the strong friendships among all groups. Interactions with her father leave you questioning whether he is good or bad. Can he be redeemed?
The ending was the Chef’s kiss! I need Book 10 to come out on graphic audio. I’m so sad this is the final book of KD.

Now onto the Iron Covenant Book 1 (Hughe’s story). I was told to read this before KD Book 10: Magic Triumphs. Followed by Iron Covenant Books 2 & 3.

Another good addition to the Kate Daniels series. This isn't my favorite of the series, but I love it. We get more of Kate's family history, more displays of power (from Kate, Julie, Roland, Roman and Christopher), a baby is born and much more! Love this cast!

Even though the dramatized adaptation is new (narration was superb), this was technically a reread and I don't have anything to add to the original review. So, you're getting it again.

Original review: I didn't have time to review Magic Binds, Kate Daniels #9, when it came out two years ago, so other than knowing that I loved it, I don't know what my thoughts were. Also of note, this is only the second time that I've read Magic Binds and apparently I forgot a lot of it. The things that stuck out this time that I can't believe I frakkin forgot?

1. Christopher ~ How in the holy hell could I have forgotten that? As I was doing my reread, I kept thinking that Christopher was more than he appeared to be, but damn. How does one forget a moment that godsdamn epic?

2. Baby Bea ~ I remembered Baby Bea was born in Magic Binds, but I didn't remember the circumstances surrounding her birth, what Raphael and Andrea chose to name her, and that stuff with Roland. That gets me to the next one.

3. Jezebel ~ This one had me asking myself, "WTF, Melanie?! WTF?!" Seriously. How could I have forgotten that?

On a good note, all of those epic moments were seen through fairly new eyes. This is what happens when you read 100+ books per year. You forgot things; some of them important like all the numerous things I had forgotten in Magic Binds and others that aren't that significant.

Something I did remember, mostly because I love the Black Volhv, is how awesome Roman was in Magic Binds. While there were several moments that stood out because he is hella snarky, this is the line that had me near tears.
“Don’t you want to eat some delicious cake before you die a horrible death?”
That's Roman asking the important questions. A Black Volhv does have to have priorities. Roman's excitement about finally being asked to officiate a wedding was equal to Kate's complete disregard to all of it. Him trying to plan a wedding in spite of Kate was hilarious.

That reminds me of something Joss Whedon once said.
Make it dark, make it grim, make it tough, but then, for the love of God, tell a joke.
Gordon and Ilona Andrews certainly know how to do all of that brilliantly and it's part of the reason why the Kate Daniels series is and will quite possibly remain my favorite urban fantasy series.

The Kate Daniels series is coming to an end with the release of Magic Triumphs on Tuesday, August 28 and after spending the better part of a decade with these characters, I'm still not ready to say goodbye. That said, it's one of the most brilliantly crafted urban fantasy worlds I've ever had the pleasure of reading and I know the final book will be epic. Why? Because the majority of the series has been.

If you like your heroines damaged, snarky, foul-mouthed, powerful, and badass, you're going to love Kate. Seriously. She's insanely powerful, has more issues than Rolling Stone, and of all the characters I've read about in my 43 years, Kate's the one I would not want to cross paths with. If you're into magic and/or mythology, it's in the Kate Daniels series. Shapeshifters more your thing? It's in there. Also included is a very unique take on vampires and necromancy.

While I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my audio reread, tomorrow brings about the end and I foresee ugly crying in my very near future. That said, I can't wait to see Kate and Curran finally get the happily ever after they've both fought so hard for.

Heather's Notes
I like these but I think I like the books better. Might be because I read the books first, but I honestly think is because some things are left out, just like things are left out of the movies. Still they are good and I am enjoying listening to them

Another amazing book. I keep saying it after every read/listen, these characters are really flushed out, the lore of each villain or individual is deep and well thought-out. You cannot help yourself but chuckle and even identify with them from one section to another. But that is of course the benefit when you've been reading this story line for a while now. You get to know them and they feel like real people with real problems, even though the world is fantasy and stranger than our own.

Kate feels flushed out, you get to do even deeper into her mind and thoughts, there are even flashbacks the character has going back to the previous first or second titles, which is nice, cause I think we all have moments like that when we look back and think "That was such an easy life back then wasn't it?"

The stakes are higher with a wedding coming and Kate and her father not seeing eye to eye, when you discover that its the age old philosophical debate of free will vs state power you get a much better and clearer picture of what this is all boiling down to.

If you have made it this far, I hope the ending will be amazing.

Reread, but in the new Grapic audio version.

while I loved the book, I also loved the original audiobook, I love this graphic audio, too! it really does bring the world to life and doesn't take away from the written version I enjoyed many a year ago.

There's not much to say. I loved it!
Love the world and the characters.
Loved the dynamic of the characters.
Even love the confusing father daughter dynamic, destroy and conquer, but also love and relationship between Kate and Rowland.
Love how hard yet easy the Kate and Curran relationship is...it's just so perfect for them.
Love the growing Julie her antics and how she's pushing and discovery herself.
There are so many loved characters!

Somehow the authors make it all so interesting, the mythology and politics, found family, cosy yet hurdle filled romance heart filled, dangerous, thrilling, happiness wavering sacrificial filled emotional ride I can't get enough of. How can I not be bored with this series? It just has forever elements I can't get enough of, and I am happy to keep driving back into.

Basic Plot: Kate must avert the disaster foreseen for her future, learn more about her powers, and get married. It's going to be a busy 2 weeks.

This entry into the Kate Daniels series did not disappoint. There was action, romance, revelations, and snark. Everything a fan of the series has come to expect and love. There were some genuinely tense moments in the book, and some emotion-jerking as well.

There were some genuinely hilarious moments in this book, particularly relating to Kate dealing (NOT dealing) with her wedding. The simple fact that Roman takes over as wedding planner, and is SUPER into it, cracks me up way more than it really has any reason to. The fact that Kate just doesn't care and only wants the whole thing to be *done* is so in character for her.

The Graphic Audio brings everything to life so well. The battles, the roaring, the music, and Roman getting overenthused just add to the whole effect. Loved every minute.

Narrators: The Graphic Audio Cast

I LOOOOOVE the Cast they did such a great job, I’m tempted to take a break before reading the last one because this one has a lot of elements compiled in it, and several sections the moments were so rushed that it was had to understand what exactly happened or the reasoning, or suddenly information you were expecting never came.
As a whole this book felt rushed.

Whether you have read even one book in this series, please do yourself another favor and get the GraphicAudio presentations also. Amazing. Listen there is no question. I was always going to love the heck out of this, this is God tier comfort series for me and GraphicAudio has finally figured out the right mix of volume and sound effects that actually add to the story versus taking you out of it. Have to give special props to the voice actor for Roman, he is freaking hilarious and absolutely nailed it.

This story really gets into Kate's family issues and gives you so much more information about Roland. I love the changes and reveals regarding characters, like Christopher. It has so much happen throughout, all while a wedding is being planned. It is funny, exciting, emotional, and endearing. I love how layered and multidimensional all these characters are, and they've become so dear.

I'd actually forgotten that this was one of the better books in the series.

Kate desperately tried not to be consumed by her power. Roland tried to be sneaky by kidnapping Saiman. Kate was sneakier by asking Curran to rescue Saiman, while she went to do something that she refused to completely disclose to Curran.

Roman was very entertaining. Teddy Jo inadvertently cured Christopher, I think? Jim was annoying, but didn't feel as annoying as the first time I read this book. Maybe that came later?

One entertaining thing was that every time Andrea felt that Kate needed some emotional support, she immediately handed her baby to Kate. It did seem to work wonders.
