“They were kings, and for a brief part of my life, I was allowed to live inside their kingdom.”

Branwen

Little girls grow up, and time steals their innocence. Memories fade, and things you love change. Except for me. You see, I fell in love at first sight when I was six years old. The problem with that was he was a grown man. My young heart had believed that he belonged to me. That should have faded with time. It didn’t. Although I hadn’t seen him in over twenty years, I still found myself measuring up the men I dated to him. That was until the day he walked into a nightclub in Vegas and sat down beside me at the bar.

He didn’t recognize the woman I had become, but I knew exactly who he was. My heart had soared, and the flutters in my stomach that no one else had ever stirred came roaring back to life. Fate had brought him back to me.

Waking up in his suite alone the next morning with a note and a morning after pill with no way to contact him had taught me that flutters were not to be trusted and that fate was a mean bitch.

Five years later, I am engaged, happy, and about to give my four-year-old daughter the life I want for her, complete with a white picket fence and a father.

That is… until I find out that I can’t get married. Because I already am.

Linc

The fact I never asked a woman I slept with her name served a purpose. If I didn’t know it, then I wouldn’t have to remember it. No getting them confused and saying the wrong one in the heat of the moment. Hell, I didn’t remember most of their faces. I got what I needed and left. My life wasn’t meant for relationships. I’d tried it. My ex-wife now lives in Europe with her current husband.

The day I walked outside to find the gorgeous blonde I’d had a wild drunken night with in Vegas five years ago handing me divorce papers and demanding I sign them, I’d been sure it was a joke or scheme to get money. The tiny replica of her that crawled out of the backseat of her car, however, struck me with an odd familiarity I couldn’t place. My gut had clenched tightly, and I knew my world had just changed. The paternity test confirmed it.

This woman who had been number one in my spank bank for five years had lied to me. Stolen the first four and a half years of my daughter’s life from me. She may have the face and body of an angel, but she was cruel.

The man she planned on marrying and bringing into my daughter’s life wasn’t happening. I’d end that. I was going to be the only father she had. I wasn’t sharing her with a stepfather.

If I had to make sure her mother only wanted me, then I’d do it. When she was addicted to me, and I owned her soul- she was going to suffer. I wouldn’t hurt her body, but I would break her heart. Over and over again.

I really thought Abbi Glines writing an older heroine would actually be different. That maybe - just maybe - she might write a woman with even just a hint of a backbone, who wasn’t so desperate and stupidly forgiving for things he would never forgive her for. Someone who wouldn’t cave immediately because the hero said “my bad” after he’s been with other women. And she just accepts it.

I just can’t relate to these kind of women. They always seem so ill-educated when it comes to life in general (especially around sex) and it honestly makes no sense to me. Especially when the woman is nearing 40. I mean, seriously?? Ugh! 😩

Spoilers

I've read pretty much every single one of Abbi Glines books. Some of them I love and some I don't. This has been my least favorite of all the smoke series.

*Spoilers Ahead*

I would have said the book was ok until I got to around 96% of the book, and the MMC was with another girl, and the FMC walks in. Then, to top it off, the FMC was right back in his bed pretty much the next night. I just can't like or root for a lead female who is so disturbingly weak. There was no groveling and barely even an apology before everything was fine. And then BOOM book over.

I don’t know why I read this I guess I keep hoping she will go back to the style of her first two books in the mafia series smoke.

This was HORRIBLE. Example:

Then, I looked at your face and unloaded. H to h about when she had walked in on him getting a blow job. Yep he brought a woman home to where the h was and their young daughter. She walks in on him and his friend with another woman. He treated her like dirt for most of the book. He was still hooking up with other women. He tells her he could not fuck them and that is why he was getting a blow job. He comes in with STD results for both of them showing clean and she just rows over and they have sex. There was no redemption this is like the last couple of chapters. Then it’s done. He’s like it will only be you she is like ok.

Doormat woman who he treated like shit and literally did nothing to make up for it. You don’t need the H fucking others to cause drama. I think part of the problem is she is pumping out these books so quickly that she is recycling the asshole treating the h badly and the OW drama is straight up cheating. She has the H with others after being with the h. Yet the h can’t even talk or smile at another man. They purposely hurt the h. The books are often abruptly ended. It’s really to bad she is a good writer and I’d honestly would buy all her books if they did not have the same shit in them and the H is always a manwhore who can’t keep it in his pants. This H got tested for STD’s every month this tells you how much fucking around he was doing. He tells her she is the only one he went without a condom. I guess he knows condoms are not full proof with the testing and you can get a STD from oral. He is not only an idiot but bringing back random women for sex with your young daughter is another level of stupidity. What if she had walked in on it.

I think I finally have to put this author on my auto do not read. These H’s are not heroes they are beta man child who act out lashing at their h’s because they did not get their way, or because of some perceived misdeeds of the h. It’s like telling the kid they can’t have a toy at the store and they have a meltdown screaming etc., these H’s are doing it but by hurting their h’s on purpose, fucking others, treating them like shit. A kid it’s hard to get them to say sorry, usually done grudgingly. These H’s are the same like my bad sorry and the h is like oh it’s ok you were with other women, I had to get a STD test, you treated me like shit, you brought random woman into the home we live in with our young daughter who could have heard and seen you getting a blow job and your friend naked. It’s ok because I want to fuck you. There is no redemption and the book felt like it was cut off at the knees.

If you are looking for a hot alpha ROMANCE you will not find it here. If you are looking for a doormat who is cheated on treated like shit and just rolls over and takes it, than happy reading.

He’d aged all right, but like a fine wine. One I would give my last breath to taste.

This review honestly pains me to write, because usually Abbi's books are my book crack. She has a formula when it comes to this series and the previous spinoffs that just worked for me. I love the uber alpha thing and Abbi usually gives the best a-hole MMCs. Unfortunately, I found out that even I have a line in romance, and that line was the 95% mark of this book.

I had hoped that with an older FMC who is in her 30s would stand on business. Unfortunately I was this may have been my least favorite heroine of Abbi's to date.

If you read and enjoyed Demons, you may like this book. But if you had issues with a certain plot devise in that book, you would likely dislike this one.

Now I'm not going to spoiler it for you in the review, but I will say, I could have forgiven this at 15%, 20%, or heck even at the 50% mark of this book. But having it happen at the very end just absolutely killed any and all enjoyment I could have had. I forgot that I was reading about a mature MMC in his 50s because he add like a 20 year old most of the time. While the angst between them dragged for the majority of the book, the ending felt rushed, underwhelming, and unfortunately just ruined the book for me. Considering what he did, there was no grovel, and he barely had to touch the FMC for her to forgive him. I may have even been ok with the events if I at least had a satisfying ending but with no grovel and having it be so rushed, it just felt underwhelming and entirely meh and just left me mad and annoyed. I love Abbi's books and have read all the spin off series so it pains me to rate this one low, but this was just not my cuppa at all. But different strokes and all that, so give it a shot and judge for yourself.

Not surprised at all that I loved this one. Every single book in this series is so good. I’m obsessed with the southern mafia and all of these stories. I’ve been dying for Linc to have a book and it was everything I needed it to be. If you like Mafia books with unhinged MMC’s who are completely obsessed with their women, it’s time to try this series. Can’t wait for the next one!

Great story spoiled by an abrupt ending.

Love the series and the other books in the authors Smoke universe but while I enjoyed the book the ending just seemed so abrupt. A few chapters before the end Linc finds out the reason for a decision that Branwen made 5 years prior and suddenly everything is good. Linc never attempted to explain his actions or seeks any type of redemption and Branwen never calls Linc out for his behaviour either. This abrupt end just left me feeling that the author couldn’t be bothered with the story any longer. I think these characters story arcs are a rare example of how a more satisfying reader experience would have been a second instalment.

I don’t know how she does it every time but Abbi has this amazing ability to create these stories that you can’t decide which one you love the most! Lincoln is older and yummy, definitely a little unhinged like all the Georgia mafia men. Branwen was his perfect match in every way. All of these characters are just amazing and I can’t wait for the next one!!

This sexy, spicy, dark mafia romance featuring Linc Shepherd head of the Mississippi Branch and Branwen! She was all set and ready to the alter and marry her fiancé and give her little daughter, the life and family that she deserves until the registrar let her know she was already married to Linc!!! So Branwen just like the mother she is sucks it up and walks back into the Southern Mafia world that she grew up in and asked Linc for a divorce.
You yourself are going to have to read the book and see if he gives her that divorce but
If you know the mafia, getting out won’t be easy and let’s just be honest there is no getting out of “the mafia”.

I really love their love story and how Branwen was always in love with Linc and the sex was spicy.🌶️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

I just did not agree with how Linc treated Branwen, in the beginning , but by the end of the book, he showed how much he loved her and they ended up being a really beautiful couple and family.
I think it was so cute how Linc was so taken with little Stevie and how she had him wrapped around her finger that’s when I really fell in love with him.

It was also really nice to see a little more of the Florida branch character’s. Blaise and Madeline have their hands full with Cree. this is just me speculating/hoping that there’s gonna be a story with Cree and Stevie

Thank you so much @abbiglines and @wordsmithpublicity for my very first ARC.
I received this beautiful ARC for free, and giving my personal review voluntarily.

a cheater and a doormat

I really wanted to enjoy this, but I just couldn’t. Linc was an awful person and so mean to her. Why she kept letting him get away with stuff without any groveling is beyond me. If there was some kind of big grovel, I’d be ok, but she just had body betrayal every time. She was really spineless and it drove me nuts.

Spoilers:

You just know he’s going to cheat on her and she’s going to let him and take him back every time because she’s a glutton for punishment.

cheating warnings should be included first.

An a doormat 38 years old, forgiveness without regret, a waste of time, until 96% it was still having hope for redeeming of linc , but just a self centered grown manchild.

Trigger warning…This is by far the worst out of any of AG’s mafia series yet. The characters ages didn’t match up with the timeline which was frustrating to try and keep straight. More importantly where was Linc’s character that we were introduced to in past books? This one couldn’t run a mafia. He had the maturity level of a 13 year old. And that might be insulting most 13 year old boys…and Branwen was spineless.

The fact it’s taken me 3 days to get to 51% speaks volumes.

I’m all for alpha males, age gap BUT can’t abide women with no backbone. She has no backbone.

I also like s€x in books but the way this 50 year old used it and her to get his rocks off was 🤨.

I was bored.

Stopped reading @ 51%.

3 "ringlets" stars

Still, in a chokehold, with Abbi Glines's Southern Mafia series.

Of the first three families, the Hughes, Shepherds, and Kingstons, an old head, Lincoln "Linc" Shepherd has been put in place as the interim-boss of the Mississippi branch, and while he is in charge of leading the current batch of Southern Mafia youngens', another youngen' from his past comes back to haunt him.

Branwen: a little girl he called "Ringlets." A girl who loved the rough mafia cowboy who when she was too young to love him romantically, and he was too old to ever think about her like that, let alone predict that he would have a one night stand with her over ten years later, after his son is grown (Levi Shepherd), his marriage is done and of the past, and he is hardened as the Mississippi Branch's "capo" in residence.

Linc and Branwen's ONS leaves something behind, another precious "Ringlets," that Linc cannot and will not ignore. He also won't ignore that Branwen thinks she can notify and just go off to get ready for nuptials with another man.

Linc, an old head, and a real asshole at that, does what Southern Mafia men do: get what belongs to them and eliminate any obstacles in his way. Only thing is Linc has some contempt for Branwen, thinking she has wronged him, so he initiates hate-fuck fest, a hot and cold thing with her, that is annoying! However, his brand of possession, sex, and control still had me reading this story. LOL (though his son's protector hero complex and love story was a better read for me).

Happy Reading.

Outlaw by Abbi Glines was absolutely phenomenal! This is possibly my favorite book in the Mississippi Smoke series, and I cannot wait for all of you to read it. I've been curious about Linc Shepard since meeting him way back when, and I was not disappointed. Gosh, this whole storyline, with the plot twist, characters, and everything in between, was amazing. I'm not gonna lie; I'm a little sad these people don't exist because I really want to be their best friend. Abbi, you are a queen, especially when writing about the Southern Mafia. I love you, and thanks for this phenomenal book!

May I just say three words?! DADDY. LINC. SHEPHERD! Whoa. I was blown away by Mr. Shepherd and his alpha self. He was everything I needed and possibly took over as my number-one spot in the book-boyfriend (Abbi's edition) category. Can we also just take a moment to appreciate the woman that is Branwen Hester?! She was a phenomenal character, and I enjoyed getting to know her and her little mini-me. Ringlets is the perfect woman for Daddy Linc. Abbi, how am I going to go without these two? I just finished the book, and I already need more of them. I guess I'll just have to reread it soon. Thank you, Abbi!

P.S. Also, can we please talk about the trashy man wh*re that is Luther Levine? Haaaa, I loved him, and I CANNOT wait for his book!

There’s just something about Abbi Glines’ writing that just always makes her books so captivating and easy to read. Although the story was so interesting that I couldn’t put it down there were some things that bothered me. The main problem I had was that the hero still had sexual encounters with other people at the very end like it was 95% into the book. Even though it wasn’t cheating it still rubbed me the wrong way. I always enjoy Abbi glines’ books and I liked this one but maybe not as much as the rest of her books.

I loved most of the books by Abbi Glines but this one even though the story was good had me angry through all the chapters.

Linc was an ass literally but let’s face it we love a possessive, dark, powerful male character that it happens to be a bit of an ass BUT how the female character was presented in the book had me angry more times than I can remember.

Branwen was presented as a rare beauty in this book, all the characters that have met her said the same thing BUT she was a doormat to Linc.
I was missing her passion, I was missing a good argument and a good grovelling. The author made sure to have her appear small and not important and I think that if she had a little more passion and back bone the book will have been amazing.

The se.. scenes were hot. 🔥

Luther was a great addition, I was hoping he will end up with her 🫣

It was beautiful to witness characters from the other books as well.

(I write the above with respect to the authors hard work. )

I really disliked this book. I don't consider myself a prude, but I hated the language while having sex. I won't read one of her books again. That was too "off putting" for me. I hated Linc. A self absorbed man child. He was not a good person! I disliked her because as had been said, she has no back bone. I wanted to yell at her many time, "I can't believe you are having sex with him again, considering the way he is treating you!!!
The only reason, I gave it one star, is I did finish it, so I guess it was somewhat interesting to me. .

I don't know why I keep subjecting myself to this type of reading torture. I think it is because of the blurbs, which always looked promising but once I start reading everything falls apart.

This book was actually passable during the early stage, lots of angst and high stakes, but Ms Glines should be staying on younger FMC if she wants to keep portraying them as naive, stupid and pushovers; don't try to give us a hardworking mom, who spent all her life fighting, if she'll become this disappointment. Equally, that old man in this book was disgusting rather than attractive.

Worst of all was the ending. I really don't understand why the men on these stories always have to cheat. I especially don't understand how some people think that's romantic to write or read about.

Nevertheless, I'm done with Abbi Glines' books for good.

Warning: Rant Ahead
.
.
.

Sadly, this series has not been it for me.

This book in particular is technically One-friggin-Star ⭐️ but I’m an OG AG fan so I will always give her books Two Stars⭐️⭐️ (on principle) - even when I don’t like the story - because I like the way she writes (minus the “you-know-what” parts)

Angst in the storyline is good.
Disrespect is not.
Branwen makes me cringe. Period.
Like…dang AG, give this woman some backbone, ffs!!

Okay, I’m done.

Rant over✌🏽

Branwen had been in love with Linc since she was a small child. Then one night five years ago, she had her night with Linc, only he didn’t know who she was and left her the morning after pill.
Realising she was actually married to Linc, she had to explain what she thought was a fuzzy memory was real. She knew Stevie had her father’s eyes but she didn’t expect for him to see her when she asked him for a divorce, once he did she knew things would change. Linc wanted them to live with him so he could get to know his daughter. Branwen knew you can’t say know to someone like Linc.
When Branwen saw Linc with Stevie her heart melted, it was what Stevie deserved. When Linc saw Branwen, he saw the woman who stole years of his daughter from him and he wanted her to pay for never telling him about her and the time he missed.
Everyone could see that it was more than that with Linc and anytime they could they made sure to bait him to try to get him to confess his real feelings for Branwen. When the truth comes out and Linc realises he was wrong, can he confess Branwen, he really wants her after the way he treated her.

Daddy Linc and his deliciously dirty mouth are everything I hoped for and so much more! It was a fantastic book in my opinion!

Outlaw is a southern mafia romance with a bit of taboo that is gonna have you melting for how good this book is! I literally devoured it. I didn’t want to put it down when reading and I enjoyed every little bit of it. Branwen is such a relatable character for most, especially myself. Linc, I have not enough words to express how much I love him. This book was so good and full of the angst that every reader looks for when they want angst. The writing was great, the characters were so enjoyable, this is definitely a book that I can easily say is worth more than five stars.

I love Abbi and her writing. I will for sure be continuing to read anything and everything she writes. Abbi Glines will always be one of the authors I recommend for all to read. I definitely recommend this book for others to read!

Mixed feelings

Originally I was only going to give this book 3 stars because I didn't care much for Linc. I didn't like the way he treated Branwen. He wanted her but only on his terms and didn't want anyone else to have her. Branwen had been in love with Linc all her life and I didn't like how she would let him walk all over her. I rated it 4 stars because it was heartbreaking when Branwen finally broke after what she witnessed. I liked the ending but there was one plotline that wasn't resolved so now I'm going to wonder what was done regarding her aunt.

Abbi Glines knows how to make you hate the asshole and love him at the same damn time. Linc was no different. The mouth on that man-and his arrogance!! Little Branwen adores Linc even after she is all grown up, and her mini me Stevie is precious. Linc falls in love with Stevie at first sight but puts Branwen through hell. Because he doesn't know! But she still loves him through it all. I needed Linc to change Branwen's last name!! I cannot get enough of all of these books, starting with the Smoke series! I need manwhore Luther's story 🔥

Of course this was 5 stars for me! Linc was chefs kiss. A little taboo...lots of spice...obsessed would be putting it mildly. These books suck me in and I can never put them down until I finish every page. This book was no exception. I read this in one day and I'm mad I finished it so quickly. Loved!
