He's strange, and she's sweet—what will happen when the two meet?

Carmen “Maneater” Reyes has ruled Eden University as its undeniable It-girl, until getting dumped in the middle of class by her boyfriend shatters her carefully curated image. Determined to ditch the drama, Carmen decides to focus on classes instead of men—after all, life is complicated enough when the voices in her head won’t quiet down about her bad decision-making.

Unfortunately for her, self-control isn’t as easy as it looks—especially when you’re used to always getting what you want. Or who you want.

Enter Theodore Clayton, disgraced former football star turned brooding, tattooed wallflower. Forced back to Eden by a deal with his father, Theo just wants to keep his head down, graduate, and move on. He’s the last person Carmen should ever turn to, but when her friends suggest a possible hook-up to get her mind off her ex, an unexpected spark is felt.

But can two people from such different worlds really work? Or are they destined to crash and burn?

Strange Sweetness offers a classic trope with a modern twist: the damaged bad boy and the fallen queen bee. Taahesi B. Williams sets up an intriguing premise with Carmen "Maneater" Reyes, the once untouchable it-girl suddenly vulnerable after a very public breakup. Her internal struggle, hinted at by the "voices in her head," adds a layer of complexity that I appreciated. Similarly, Theodore Clayton, the former football star turned brooding artist, is more than just a stereotypical recluse. His own demons and forced return to university create a compelling backstory.

The initial spark between Carmen and Theo is certainly present and provides the kind of will-they-won't-they tension that keeps you turning pages. There are moments of genuine sweetness and vulnerability between the characters, and the author clearly has a knack for creating charming and relatable dialogue. I especially liked the exploration of Carmen's internal struggles; she's not just a shallow popularity queen, and seeing her rebuild was definitely a highlight.

However, the book doesn't fully deliver on its potential. At times, I felt like the "strange" aspect of Theo was maybe a bit underdeveloped, and while the internal voices of Carmen were interesting, they felt sometimes a little vague in terms of their impact on the plot. The pacing also felt a bit uneven in places, with some moments feeling rushed while others lingered. While I liked the premise and the characters individually, their connection didn't always feel as strong or as believable as it needed to be.

Ultimately, Strange Sweetness is an enjoyable read with likable characters and a decent dose of romantic tension. While the story doesn't quite reach the heights it promises, it's still a good choice for readers looking for a lighthearted but somewhat angsty college romance with a few deeper themes sprinkled in. It's a good read, but with a few tweaks, it could have been a great one.

4.25⭐️ ✨ Strange Sweetness by Taahesi B. Williams ✨

This one gave me all the feels—college drama, supportive friendships and the kind of slow burn romance that simmers until it finally sparks. 💫 Carmen, Eden U’s confident “it-girl,” is hiding insecurities behind her bold persona, while Theo, the tattooed ex-football star, just wants peace after his own betrayals. Their chemistry is raw and complicated, filled with banter, tension, and plenty of healing along the way.

I loved how Williams let the characters be messy and real. Their flaws make them relatable, and their growth feels earned. The mix of vulnerability + swoony moments was spot on, even if the ending felt a little rushed/cliffhanger.

Looking forward to reading Strange Seduction and catching up where Carmen and Theo left off.

This book was a slowwww burn that took me on an emotional roller coaster. This author created the most soft MMC I’ve read so far. Theo was loving, thoughtful, caring, PATIENT, sweet, but also protective. Theo should be the model person for patience because Carmen literally strung him along for a year. Carmen tore my nerves up so bad, she was very flaky and wishy washy when it came her and Theo’s relationship.

This author did a great job depicting the dynamic of “college” relationships. I went into the book expecting a roller coaster of emotions, and indecision - and this is exactly what this book gave.

The hopeless romantic in me wishes that this book ended with a HEA (especially after 671 pages), however this is a series so I’m hoping to see more of Theo and Sweetness in the future.

Over all good book, no grammatical errors noted. I JUST WANT THEIR HEA OK.

I didn’t enjoy this one bit, every time I thought we were getting somewhere we were sucked back into a whirlpool of indecision, poor communication and unnecessary strife. Theo and Carmen needed to open they dang mouths and just have adult discussions. Carmen is /was a conflicting FMC while I liked things about her I also hated those same things. Like in one breath she’s this intelligent hard working student and then the next sentence she’s an insecure rock head bird who makes decisions that inconvenience her and everyone around her. I appreciated the therapy representation but Carmen needed a 72 hour hold. Overall there was no real resolution and we basically started the spin cycle all over. I did try to read book too but the growth was limited there as well. I felt like this was dialogue heavy and the amount of noise was just distracting to the story as a whole. While it was entertaining I was pushing through with rage and annoyance fueling me the cover is cute tho

I am still in shock after reading this. Not the ending I was hoping for but the book was so good, and I still have faith in Theo and Carmen.
I spent half the book irritated with Carmen, not going to lie.
Learning about their past while navigating the present kept me on my toes. The connection in the beginning was authentic.
Motivation and Temptation had me cracking up!
The emotional ride you go on while reading this book is tense. I enjoyed the fact that the book changed pace from time to time.
The struggles they both face, how they handle them separately and how they hand them together was inspiring, even if I was annoyed with Carmen.
“I am so lucky to be loved by someone like you.” THE WAY THEY STOOD TEN TOES DOWN FOR EACH OTHER but kept hurting each other at the same time cut deep!
A great take on college romance: toxic, healing, sexual, complicated.
Taahesi, I will be reading more of your work!
Thanks to you and to Literally Yours PR for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC… the opinions are my own, as always!

She’s the campus It-girl trying to recover her image after a public breakup, he’s the fallen football star with tattoos, a chip on his shoulder, and no interest in the spotlight. On paper, they should have crashed and burned, but their spark was undeniable.

This was a true slow burn, the kind that makes you impatient but keeps you hooked because when it finally clicks, it’s worth the wait. Carmen’s voice had attitude and vulnerability all wrapped together, and Theo’s brooding energy balanced her perfectly. Their dynamic moved from fun and reckless to surprisingly tender, showing that sometimes the person who seems least likely to fit you is the one who does. This book kept me entertained and invested. It was equal parts dramatic, funny, and unexpectedly heartfelt, proving that strange and sweet really can work.

Maneater Carmen Reyes is no longer the untouchable it-girl after a messy, very public breakup, and her internal struggles add a depth that makes her more than just a former queen bee. Then there’s Theo ex-football star who’s dealing with his own demons after being forced back to university. Their chemistry is undeniable, bringing that addictive will-they-won’t-they tension, and there are some really sweet, vulnerable moments between them. I loved seeing Carmen’s journey of rebuilding herself and proving she’s more than her reputation. That said, the book doesn’t fully hit its potential. Theo’s “strangeness” felt a little underdeveloped, and while Carmen’s internal voices were intriguing, they didn’t always feel like they had enough weight in the plot. The pacing also felt uneven with some parts rushed, others dragging. Overall, Strange Sweetness is an enjoyable, slightly angsty college romance with likable characters and solid romantic tension, but with a little more polish, it could have been great.

Strange Sweetness is a captivating read that takes you on a thrilling journey full of unexpected twists and challenges. The story masterfully explores the complexities of a strong female leader navigating new (and old) conflicts, and I loved how the plot kept me on the edge of my seat.
The romantic relation with the cinnamon roll boyfriend was absolutely heart-wrenching — I cried so much over him! But in the end, I was so happy to see him get the happiness he longed for. This book was an emotional rollercoaster, and I couldn’t put it down! Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a mix of strong characters and a heart-tugging love story.

This book was soooooooo entertaining I was devouring every line!!! When I say these two characters could not keep the hands to themselves!!! Polar opposite do attack even when the world around you doesn’t understand it! To love another you must love yourself and these two had a lot of growing up to do and watching them grow was my favorite part. Now I’m here waiting for book two because I need more of Carmen and Teddy 🥰🥰

"He's strange, and she's sweet—what happens when the two collide?"

Carmen, the infamous "maneater" of Eden University, has spent years ruling the social scene—until her boyfriend, Micah, publicly humiliates her by breaking up with her in the middle of class. Determined to swear off men, she tries to stick to her resolution... but self-control has never been her strong suit. Not to mention, the judgmental voices in her head won’t let her forget a single mistake.

Enter Theodore Clayton—a former football star turned brooding, tattooed wallflower with dangerously good looks. He’s back at university only because of a deal with his father, and he’s the last person Carmen should be drawn to. But if there’s one thing about Carmen, it’s that she’s always full of surprises.

I really enjoyed this book! Carmen’s decision-making and behavior were questionable at times, but the author gave a fair warning—these are dumb college kids, after all, and that made it more realistic. Despite the length, I was never bored because the drama and chaos kept me entertained. The two voices in Carmen’s head? Absolutely hilarious. They added such a unique touch to the narration, and I loved that.

Now, let’s talk about Theodore—what a dream book boyfriend! He’s understanding, caring, and the way he respects women? Chef’s kiss. Some moments hurt on his behalf, but I loved how everything unfolded, and the way it ended has me even more intrigued.

Overall, I adored this book. If anything in this review piqued your interest, you need to check it out! For a debut novel, this was seriously impressive.

Strange Sweetness is a college romance that I found to be an enjoyable read. It is a bit of a slow burn, but it's spicy at the same time. FMC Carmen Reyes, aka The Maneater, was stressing me out the majority of the story, but that's not a bad thing because that means the author did what they were supposed to do when it comes to writing complex characters. I needed Carmen to get it together and quick. Theodore Clayton, the former playboy and the MMC, was a loveable character because he always respected Carmen and her boundaries, but he did have some flaws when it came to how he dealt with Carmen.

TAAHESI!!! What an introduction.

Carmen and Theo’s story is such a beautiful and complicated one and I am absolutely in love. Carmen is a beautiful, stubborn intelligent girl who’s trying to keep her head high and not allow herself to believe whatever is said about her whilst she tries to achieve the dreams she doesn’t believe she deserves. Honestly seeing the soft side to her made me want to hold her and protect her but I know she can protect herself. And Theo is a loving teddy bear who again has to go through this world trying to remove the labels everyone attaches to him. Seeing them both battle their own mental health issues and their own voices, that’s constantly fighting against them and their own happiness, really made me want to scream more than once. They both deserve so much love and Taahesi really took the time to create such complex and loveable yet flawed characters that make them more human and easier to fall in love with.

10/10. You came out the bat with this book and I’m so excited to see more of your work ❤️❤️

Thank you for sharing this with me ❤️

Strange Sweetness is a slow-burn New Adult romance that offers both swoony moments and thoughtful emotional depth—though I did find myself questioning the meaning behind the title. The story was more sweet than strange, and while there were some quirky dynamics between the main characters, the title may lead readers to expect something a little more unconventional than what this heartfelt, trope-tickling romance delivers.

Carmen “Maneater” Reyes is everything you’d expect from Eden University’s reigning queen bee: confident, charismatic, and seemingly unbothered—until she’s dumped publicly in class. The image she’s worked so hard to build crumbles, and with it, her faith in romance. Turning her attention to academics, Carmen swears off relationships, determined to regain control over her life. But letting go of her flirtatious ways is harder than expected, especially when someone new catches her eye.

That someone is Theodore “Theo” Clayton, a tattooed ex-football star with a complicated past and a mysterious presence. He’s back at Eden under reluctant circumstances, and the last thing he wants is attention—especially from someone like Carmen. But chemistry doesn’t care about their differences, and what starts as a casual distraction turns into something much more emotionally layered.

What stood out to me was the emotional vulnerability on both sides. Carmen isn’t just a “playgirl”—she’s someone trying to escape the voices of self-doubt and poor choices. Theo, meanwhile, is nursing old wounds and learning how to trust again after being betrayed by someone he once loved. Their relationship grows in slow, realistic steps that felt refreshing for the genre.

While the book didn’t blow me away with high drama or shocking twists, it did win me over with its sincerity. If you’re looking for a New Adult romance that’s more character-driven than plot-heavy, Strange Sweetness is a solid pick. Carmen is sweet, Theo is strange—and together, they find something quietly beautiful in each other.

Perfect for fans of campus romance with emotional healing, second chances, and a bit of opposites-attract magic.

*****Spoilers*****

Carmen irked my nerves through the majority of this book. The story opens with her attending college with her boyfriend dumping her during a class. From there, the book is a lot of interpersonal conflict and secrets. Her friends are trying to hook her up with Theodore who keeps staring at her but Carmen plays it cold shoulder by saying she's not into him. Lies, big lies because they were on again off again before calling it quits but had kept their relationship secret. Next we get more on again off again between Carmen and Theo which continues throughout the book all the way to the end. Why? Because Carmen. Theo was so gone for her that he puts up with too much of her wishy washy ways I thought. One minute she ends things, the next she's barging into his dorm unannounced and is jealous of his ex being there. Carmen spends too much time running away instead of dealing with her issues and snapping Theo up. I couldn't help but wish that he would throw her to the side and move on. So much so that I wasn't even surprised at how the book ends with them on yet another break 5 years after graduation. I'm happy this book is over so I can let my imagination take over for how their story ends.

Despite my disgust with Carmen, it didn't detract from other positives the book had going for it. The writing was good and the story was long enough to develop the characters and their relationships with one another. I truly adored Theo and the relationships that both he and Carmen had with their friends. They have a healthy physical relationship and share I love yous in the book. One thing I was so confused about was when Micah, Carmen's ex kept popping up after he dumped her. The reverse psychology didn't work on Carmen because she was well and truly done after the public spectacle of her being let loose and never looked back from that.

All in all, I enjoyed the storytelling but Carmen tanked my employment of the book too much to rate it higher. I know there's another book but I just can't with what I saw from Carmen in this one so I won't read the next.

I often read books like I watch movies so when something happens that doesn't make sense I tell myself it's fiction and creative license but it's a hiccup in my reading adventure too. There were a few hiccups but I hung in there for the sake of the HEA which I didn't really get cause they weren't together for whatever reason that happened in Italy.

Made me think back to my college days. Sneaky links were easy things to maintain that for sure.

Theo was an old student at 26 and even with his gap year it didn't make sense. And as rich as he was why was he living in the dorms? And what dorms don't allow visitors? His sister's attitude towards Carmen was a bit out of left field especially based on her marrying someone not on her family's level. She was the pot calling the kettle black and became her mother.

The voices in Carmen's head Temptation and Motivation didn't really seem like decision making factors in Carmen's life. So was unsure of the real purpose of using them. She was maneater who let some dude dog her out? Didn't fit her personality at all and never saw a reason on why she stayed with him. I understand perhaps she felt she deserves the treatment he gave her but again he wasn't making it worth it to stay IMO. She had a boyfriend but yet wouldn't considered a commitment with Theo. It didn't make sense. Carmen was insufferable and very much like her mother. She needed therapy not a guidance counselor to talk to. And who has the ability to call a prisoner?

Micah and Eloise deserved each other and acted like high schoolers with their obsession.

Jayda, Izzy and Theo's crew were good supporting cast.

It was unnecessarily long IMO.

Unsure if I will read the second book. I gave it 3 stars because I finished it.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I had to sit in my thoughts a bit for this one. Strange Sweetness is a stellar debut novel by Taahesi, I was completely engaged from page one, the setting, the pacing, the characters, chef's kiss!

There's so much drama and messiness happening. So much back and forth, sometimes I will admit to getting annoyed by the whip lash of emotions but I had to check myself because....hello!? These people are in college, of course they're still figuring things out. Although to be honest some of the adults are pretty trash in this book and still don't have it figured out either.

What kept me glued to my kindle was the dynamic between Carmen & Theo. They both have some emotional and mental baggage ( there's a lot to unpack for both of them) it's emotionally draining, it's sad and thought provoking but even though Carmen often keeps pushing, Theodore always pulls her in. He is a gentle giant (with her) a consent king, loyal, devotional, kind and always puts her first not that either are perfect but I feel like they could be for each other.

I love Carmen and Theo's best friends and am looking forward to more of their shenanigans.

Carmen's ex is GARBAGE, right along with EL"ho"ISE!

Theo's older sister is.....annoying, sorry she is.

Carmen's mother needs to seek help, I think she's doing the best she can based on how she was raised but in my eyes it's kind of harmful.

After 500+ pages I'll admit I had a certain expectation of the ending and that expectation was utterly stepped on, smashed and lit on fire. I'm still grieving it but all I can do is wait for and anticipate book 2.

Thank you Author Taaheesi and LYPR for the ARC!

Strange Sweetness takes on a familiar trope—the damaged bad boy and the fallen queen bee—and gives it a refreshing modern spin. Taahesi B. Williams crafts an engaging premise centered around Carmen "Maneater" Reyes, once the reigning it-girl, now grappling with newfound vulnerability after a very public breakup. Her internal struggle, punctuated by the "voices in her head," adds an intriguing psychological depth to her character. Her voices “Temptation and Motivation” were very entertaining and funny! I may have liked them more than Carmen! Haha! The main male character Theodore Clayton, the former football star turned brooding artist, may have been too “sweet” for me…I just may not be used to the “cinnamon roll” MMC. The setting took place on a college campus but a lot of the scenes felt very “high schoolish” to me. The book was extremely long and I felt that the story could’ve been wrapped up in less than 300 pages versus 671 pages. After all that, there still wasn’t a HEA! We definitely could’ve had more details on what happened between them once they graduated. I feel the entire story was based on what would happen to their relationship once school ended and we ended up with nothing! Maybe we will get more details in the 2nd book!

Messy, Magnetic, and Oh-So-Satisfying!

Strange Sweetness by Taahesi B. Williams was sooooo entertaining, I was devouring every line! When I say these two could not keep their hands to themselves—whew! opposites really do attract, even when the world around them doesn’t get it. Carmen and Theodore had me hooked from the first page.
At its core, this is more than just a fling-to-forever, friends-with-benefits, opposites-attract romance. It’s a story about self-love and growth—two people with flaws and baggage figuring out how to love each other without losing themselves. Watching them mature, make mistakes, and still choose each other was my favorite part.
I’ll be honest, I was not prepared to fall in love with these two. I came for the messy college drama and stayed for the magnetic chemistry, the banter, and the vulnerability that snuck up on me. The writing style? Absolutely flawless. The plot? Masterfully delivering twist after twist. The chemistry? Practically leaping off the page. Theo and Carmen didn’t just say they were in love—they made me experience it. Taahesi B. Williams is a new author to me, but after this? I’m locked in. I need book two immediately, because I am not ready to let Carmen and Teddy go.

Not your typical romance

This book was almost DNF (did not finish), but after I made it through the first hundred pages, it started capturing my attention.

Carmen is the school’s it girl that every boy wants, but underneath her popular persona there are a ton of secrets she’s hiding from everyone.

Theo is returning back to college to fulfil a promise to graduate to take over his family’s business. Keeping a low profile is his main goal.

Carmen and Theo paths cross which leads to romance and scandal. This book gives soap opera drama. The only dislike I have are the dual narrators of motivation and temptation. Honestly at one point I thought a discovery of a personality disorder diagnosis would be addressed in the book. Also it was quite confusing to keep up when we were discussing the present situations and past situations.

Hopefully book 2 in the series is a continuation of Theo and Carmen, or provides the story of the other characters from the book.

he’s strange, she’s sweet — but what happens when the two meet?

this prequel gave us all the messy, emotional backstory behind carmen and theo’s dynamic. at eden university, carmen reigns as the “it-girl,” but her breakup in the middle of class cracks that perfect image wide open. enter theo — brooding, tatted, disgraced football star, and the complete opposite of what she usually goes for.

honestly? theo felt too good for carmen in this one. she was stuck in an emotional tug-of-war with herself and didn’t realize how many people she was dragging through the mud alongside her — especially theo. we love an opposites attract trope, but keeping things private would’ve saved so much heartache. as soon as others got involved, everything spiraled.

the epilogue hits differently after finishing strange seduction. watching how their connection began makes their eventual unraveling even more gut-wrenching. i’m really hoping taahesi gives us a third book and a chance at reconciliation because the love is there — it’s just buried under all that pain.

This opposites-attract college romance brings the heat and the heart. Carmen, the queen bee with a broken heart and a messy inner monologue, meets Theo, the brooding ex-football star with a lot of baggage. What starts as a distraction quickly turns into something deeper, messier, and way more complicated than either of them planned.

The writing is quick, witty, and emotionally charged, with just the right balance of angst and humor. Carmen is chaotic but layered, and Theo’s quiet intensity makes him an irresistible match for her fire.

If you're into flawed characters, college drama, and tension-filled slow burns with heart, this one’s worth the read.

This is the first in a new series as well as being a debut from this author.
Carmen is the ruler of Eden University, but when she gets dumped by her boyfriend is a class, her image is shattered. Theo is a disgraced former football star, and he just wants to keep his head down and get on with his studies.
This is a good story which is a slow burn, emotional roller coaster, with family, friendships, drama, tad angst, challenges, opposites attract friends-wit-benefits, healing, tension, unexpected twists, and romance, which leads to an enjoyable page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend.

Characters:
Carmen swears off of relationships after s humiliating public breakup. She will focus on herself and completing her goals.

Theo- former football. Forced back into school by his father, our tattooed sweet boy Just wants to fade into the bs ground and finish his degree.

A hook up turns to more. A lot of push and pull with these two. A definite emotional roller coaster. The relationship was definitely complicated.

They have to work together and separately to grow and get the relationship they deserve. We do not get a perfect HEA.

This took me WAY to long to read but that’s more my fault lol

This was really cute and fun and the DRAMA?! Baby the drama.

I loved Carmen and Theos dynamic.. Theo is a little edgy and I love that type of mmc. And Carmen is like a glittery baddie lol love that!

I also loved every character in the friend group! All so fun and I feel like I would totally be friends with them.

Cons? It was really long and I feel like it could’ve been like 100 pages less but that’s also a me thing! Definitely going to read book 2 because I need to know what happened in that place that you would know is you read it lmao

This book ruined my life in the best way possible. From start to finish I have been hooked. I fell for both the MMC and FMC both were complex and I resonated with Carmen so much I think she was so well written so complex she stressed me out a lot when it came to Theo but he also stressed me out. I love their dynamic. I love how much they love each other and it’s rare for me as a book reader to like both characters, but I love them both I 10 out of 10. Recommend this book. It’s amazing. I need her to continue because I need to know what happens next who’s next?

So...wow!

Look, I was not prepared to fall in love, okay? I was expecting to read about some messy college ish and get my nerves rattled by a couple of college kids but this was so much more and it was unexpected. First the writing style is a 10 out of 10. The plot was PLOTTING and the chemistry was dripping on the page. Theo and Carmen made me FEEL their love. No telling, all showing. This author was new to me but definitely I will definitely be reading book 2 and anything else youre working on. Phenomenal.

3/5⭐️ The author did an amazing job writing this story and having a unique style. However this story dragged so much and it’s just a personal thing. I loved the MMC, Theo. He was so sweet and will definitely be added to my favorite book boyfriends. Carmen the FMC, however, was pissing me off since the beginning and it just kept getting worse with every choice she made. Carmen and Theo as a couple wasn’t doing it for me and I think I will be more interested in Jayda and Tyler’s story if they are getting a story.

Uggggh!! This book had me going through all the emotions that Carmen experienced! And Theo had me in my feelings and loving his sweet nature! If you've ever experienced an ex that manipulated you and wouldn't go away, or trash parent that absolutely shouldn't be a parent, or have your own found family, Carmen will resonate with you. I loved this so much and couldn't put it down. I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily because I enjoyed the book.

Can’t wait to see what Taahesi brings next

I do not write reviews! Just not my thing, but I had no choice but to let yall know Taahesi put her foot in this book! She has done something so unique with her writing! I’m obsessed. Theo and Carmen really really took me through it! I felt all emotions reading this book, I was shocked, happy, crying! You name it and I felt it. I can’t wait to read book 2 and anything else Taahesi drops!
