2/2/25 This is more a 3.5? Debating kicking it to four... I did really like it - though I was annoyed by how reactive vs proactive FL and ML were. Like - you're the goddamn emperor. It was always "I've got the shadow guard to investigate and they can do anything" instead of you know, people stepping in to STOP THE SHIT FROM HAPPENING. Same with FL. I get some schemes she had to let happen to get evidence - but that was early on before she had power and when ML didn't love and trust her.
By the end I was like ... "ayfkm, again? STILL?"
Nevertheless, outside of that, I really enjoyed it. This was very much like "the job of an imperial concubine" but softer, sweeter, and an actual romance. (Also like 100 ways or whatever other scheming harem romance - but again, actual follow through on a romance.)
I always love me a smitten hero - and guy did well for his time. FL slowly trained him to being devoted - although her initial goal was favor and protection, not actual romance. Which I respect - as a transmigrator stuffed into the harem, a bitch knows what she has to do, and she was fantastic at it. LOL to when she whined about having to go to work (pay respects to the empress). We had a lot of eyeroll annoying villains, but sadly *stares at what's happening in the world* that's all too realistic. So.
I can definitely see myself re-reading this book.
And OMFG I cried like a fucking baby at nian gao (the dog's) extra.
ML and FL truly were sweet in this book. (TBH I didn't care about all the other minor characters and didn't bother remembering their names/titles, and the slight word salad didn't help yet did help in me ignoring them.)

I read that exactly after another book from the same author. After the first couple of chapters I though that this one would be worse than the other one, but surprisingly I ended up liking this more.
Though the beginning is somewhat weak and confusing - especially with all the new names and titles (that keep changing!!!) that are hard to keep track of. Our female lead is not only a transmigrator (though she does not know a story), there is also an antagonistic female reincarnator around. As you might guess that reincarnator is not pleased that things don't go as they are supposed to since she is not the only variable that has changed.
As a character the female lead is bold, but in a calculated way. She does not want to be in the harem, but is very much aware of the fact that she has no choice. The only way to live well is to earn the emperor's favor. I really enjoyed the way she goes about that, especially since it is her way and it would probably not work for many others. She has the "advantages" that her father was a heroic general who died in service of the country and that she was personally appointed as a side-concubine by the previous emperor shortly before he died. Treating her badly would consequently not only embitter other older military officials, but also go against the late emperor - a big nono. These facts come together with the fact that the current emperor did not rise to his position through his own power - he was just the best choice left at the end. Consequently his position is a bit shaky and he does not have as much backing as other emperors we encounter in stories might have. So when our female lead steps a bit outside of what the rules would usually allow, she has a bit of leeway. And she is smart about it. Her actions are not offensive, but they stick out - making her memorable.
I like her as a character a lot. She is not the typical scheming beauty, or the seemingly sweet caring woman that we often see female lead put up as a front. She is more genuine in a way, of course, there is still acting, but she remains true to her character at her core. She is bold, she does not forgive and forget, and she won't allow others to step on her - a person who does not step away form confrontations - instead she has a bad temper. A quarrelsome person, if you will. She is also honest, not in the sense that she does not scheme at all, but in sense that she stays true to her core morals. This also ties into her identity as a transmigrator - it makes sense that she can't completely shake of the morals she has been thought - even if that's not always to her advantage. I also enjoyed that she is not all-knowing. While she is keen and has a good read on others, other people do manage to scheme against her too. It was a refreshing change.
The emperor is probably one of my favorites among the imperial harem stories that I read - he is probably one of the more human ones. He tries really hard, but not everything always goes his way. He tries to be insightful in his interactions with the members of his harem, but he is human and sometimes old affections might make him act not as decisive as he could and maybe should have been. He also grows over the course of the story. It is really nice to actually see him fall in love. From irritation, to interest, to affections, to trust and genuine love. He is a man who has to go the whole way.
And in this story, we also see the female lead do the same. She knows it's not wise, and she holds out and reminds herself, that she must always love herself more - and maybe she does. But well, sincerity is the ultimate killer-move!
Aside from the two main leads we also have a core of side characters that are central to the story, such as the empress (!) some of the maids, the eunuchs, and (some) other members of the harem. And for some we see them grow and change as well. Especially the empress was really interesting to me after reading another story by the same author - she is the exact opposite. She was not groomed to be empress, she was not meant for this position and she struggles with that.
In the same style of the other novel the extras are once again about what happens to the main couple and the royal children down the line. And again it's a mixed bag, not everyone gets to be totally happy - notable to me was that it's not just the female lead's kids that get a good ending.
Another good novel! Struggle through the first 40 chapters to see if it's for you, at that point the names are no longer as bad (or you made a list).
