The events in Witch Upon a Star take place twenty years before Mind Over Monsters and twenty one years before the events in What's a Witch to Do?.

Anna Olmstead is just nine when she meets Asher, a dashing, centuries old vampire who rescues her from her father pimping both his daughter's magical talent and more to any one with a few dollars. Asher is her saviour, he provides her a life of wealth and privilege, love and protection and as Anna grows she is determined to always be at his side. At fourteen she becomes Asher's legal consort and later his lover, believing all of her dreams have come true. Eventually however the relationship begins to sour as Asher's true nature asserts itself, and things begin to spiral out of control. Still she can't let go, and Asher refuses to free her, until one murderous, bloody night.
Almost a decade later Anna is happily married and the mother of two young sons, her life with Asher behind her, when an attempt is made to kidnap her and Anna has no choice except to confront the man she once loved with all her heart.

Witch Upon a Star is not what I expected, it has none of the lightness found in What's a Witch to Do? and is much darker than Werewolf Sings the Blues though is still billed as A Midnight Magic Mystery.

Witch Upon a Star is actually a story of corrupted innocence and dark obsession. There is little humour, and the themes are confronting touching on child abuse, drug addiction and exploitation. Don't get me wrong, the novel is well written and the story is quite affecting but I was thrown by the unexpected seriousness.

To be fair the synopsis hints at the seriousness of the story but the whimsical title, cutesy cover and the reputation of the author for snarky humour, contradicts it. As long as the reader is aware of what they are getting into, Witch Upon A Star is a good read.

I'm not sure how to review Witch Upon a Star. So much happened and I've been thinking about the story ever since I finished the book. Lately I don't give five stars to a book easily, at least not unless I'm truly blown away by it so obviously I loved this book. I've read every book by Jennifer Harlow so far and though it took me a while to finally get started on the book, it is absolutely a top favorite of mine by her.

This book felt really different to me compared to the other two book in the series. I can't really put my finger on it but it was just unique. The story starts with 29 year-old Anna Olmstead who's happy with her life, husband and two little boys until a man tries to kidnap her and her children. There are some flashes, where you just know something happened to Anna in her past, that she escaped someone. The next chapters go back in the past from the moment Anna is 9 years old up, when she meets Asher, a vampire that's over 800 (if I remember correctly) until she's 19. We read about her when she was 9, 11, 13, 15 and eventually 19. Always on her birthday. Usually I'm not a fan of books that take you back to where a character is a child but I actually loved it with this story. I wanted to know Anna's past and the way Jennifer Harlow wrote it was just so captivating. From the moment I started reading, I was pretty much enthralled by the story and characters. I barely stopped reading until I finished.

I have to say that I don't think this book is for everyone, though of course I hope everyone will give it a shot. It's pretty dark at times and there were some moments where even I was disturbed. But even so I was intrigued by Anna, the way she grew from the 9 year-old girl who was so enthralled by Asher to her 19 year-old self who finally saw what Asher was really like. I'm not sure what so say about Asher. Some scenes with him and Anna sincerely brought tears to my eyes. And I did like him when he was good to Anna. But to be honest, they were obsessed with each other from the moment they met. Asher wanted a good life for her, gave her everything she wanted, gave her the best teachers and tried to do the right thing for her when she was young, and eventually they ended up being lovers. This story is actually pretty tragic but I thought there was a sort of beauty to it too, at moments, especially the ending.

Now, there are a lot of references to Jennifer Harlow's F.R.E.A.K.S. series. I'm a huge fan of tha series, especially of Oliver, a vampire who's been kind of forced to work with the F.R.E.A.K.S. And this book actually revealed how Oliver happened to join the F.R.E.A.K.S. There were some hints about that in that series, but I'm so glad to actually know the full story of that. And I must say that I loved the start of the book where a certain main character from a certain favorite series of mine appeared. *wink wink*

As for the other characters, aside from Anna, Asher and Oliver, I also really liked Nathan who ends up being Anna's husband eventually. He might not be in it much, not until the end, but I adored him and he's exactly what Anna needed that Asher was not. Her two little boys were also too damn cute.

Like I said before I thought the ending was actually pretty beautiful. Sure, it was sad and tragic, but there was a certain elegance to the way Anna ans Asher ended up saying goodbye to each other. Even now, thinking about it, makes me a little emotional. The story was that good and affected me quite a bit.

What more can I say about this story other than that I adored it? The story, the characters, the way it was written so perfectly, in my opinion - it all was incredible!

I shall begin with the thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to advance read this book.

If the truth is to be known, I have now brought the rating of this book down to three stars. In retrospect, I was generous with my four star rating. For most of the book I was somewhat disappointed – unsure of whether it would be one of those books in which I end up giving a mere two or three stars despite having expected much more. Whilst about fifty percent of the book was this way, towards the end things did start to pick up and it managed to pull itself up to a three star review rather than a two.

I think my lack of understanding on certain aspects of the story left me unhappy with it for so long, if the truth is to be known. I feel that it is one of those books that would be much easier to understand if I had read the author's other work. There were so many references to a different series that I found myself drowning in the references. Okay, maybe drowning in the references is a slight exaggeration, but there were too many references to the F.R.E.A.K.S. series for my liking. I would have been fine with references to the other Midnight Magic Mystery books as this is number three (I confess to never having read the prior three) but to reference the other books simply left me too curious about the references to jump into this story as much as I would have liked.

Nevertheless, once I got around these things the story was an interesting one. The cover would have you thinking it is some cutesy romance when it reality it is a story of dangerous obsession – the first half of the book the obsession of one character, the second half of the book being the tables reversed. It wasn’t quite the horror or mystery I had been expecting, yet the fact that it was not some cliché romance won me over. I confess that the ending was somewhat predictable yet the specific way in which certain events played out towards the end saved it from dropping the book back down to a two star review (something that almost happened when everything played out in the last ten percent of the book).

Overall, it’s not something I will go out of my way to read again. In fact, knowing what I know now I’m glad it was an advanced read rather than a book I paid for, as whilst it was not the worst book I have ever read I couldn’t bring myself to keep the original four star rating.

Of the three books in the Midnight Magic Mystery series, this was my favorite. All were very good with fun, loving, enjoyable characters. This one had a nice dark path to it while still keeping true to the others. I highly recommend.

Witch Upon a Star, A Midnight Magic Mystery, Jennifer Harlow.
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: paranormal, romance, suspense.
My first read of Jennifer’s books, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The cover image and text suggested a kind of humorous, light and fluffy, chicklit style, paranormal romance, but this book is so much more than that.
We meet Anna when she’s just nine, an incredibly self confident and powerful though untrained witch, brought up by her dad after her witch mum left. He has a revolving series of short term girlfriends around and uses Anna  to make potions to support his drug habit. Asher wants a raising done, and Anna’s dad happily sends her off into the night with a strange man to do it – all he’s bothered about is the money. Something in Anna stirs Asher from his remoteness, and he rescues her from her father and takes her to live with him. He’s  a few hundred years old, and has plenty of money so they tour the world staying at his various homes, and with Anna picking up an education along the way. She was over her age for a nine year old, and being with Asher she seems so much older, but emotionally she’s still a teen. She thinks she loves him though and they become lovers after she seduces him at fifteen. Anna’s happy at home, just the two of them but though Asher has been playing at home for a few years, his true nature comes out and he starts the party circuit.
I really felt for Anna, she’s still a child and yet has had to grow up so quickly. Asher’s lifestyle isn’t one she should be involved in, and yet she’s so obsessed by him she won’t let him go alone, knowing he’ll get involved with others. Going with him doesn’t really work either though – she soon gets pulled in to the hedonistic vampire lifestyle. She’s not vampire though, and its taking a toll on her health. She’d do anything for Asher though, she’s besotted with him, and once his old friend Christine comes on the scene Anna starts to get a secondary role despite Asher's promises to her.
Asher – at heart its hard to judge him. He’s a vampire, and they just have a totally different outlook to humans. He doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong, its the life he’s lived for hundreds of years now... He rescued Anna on impulse, bored almost to death with his current life he let her fill the vacuum of it for a few years – and he was good to her at first. Christine however sees Anna as a rival for his affections, she’s successfully despatched a few of those over the years and the gloves are off. I wanted to hate Asher for being with her, taking her into their life, for believing her lies, for being so cruel to Anna even though he didn’t feel he was. She didn’t want to share, didn’t want to be pushed out to his friends, but Christine is a master at manipulation. If she hadn’t been there would he have stayed true? I don’t know – its a tough call, I think he’s still have partied and made Anna unhappy.
Eventually Anna gains the strength to realise this lifestyle is killing her and she deserves more – she appeals to Asher, but he doesn’t seem to want to believe she’ll leave – but she does. Full of hope for a new life she’s happy for a few hours, and then...well, you’ll have to find out for yourself!
Its a wonderful read, full of depth, with some incredible characters. Christine is a master manipulator and a real b1tch, and I so love those characters. They add a dimension to stories that gives so much extra. She plays a huge part too – she’s not just there for a few pages. Its really bittersweet in that in a way Asher still loves Anna, but his love is stifling and selfish – she says to him if he loves her he’ll let her go – but he won’t do that, and when things go wrong they really go wrong. When she eventually falls in love with Nathan, a fellow F.R.E.A.K.S colleague we see just how good he is, a true man who loves her as she deserves. That’s challenged after several years though by Asher, whose decided he wants her now he’s found her, and who want Nathan out of the way, and Anna and their children for his own. It leads to some serious dangers for Nathan and Anna.
I loved this book, devoured in it one long read. Its around 300 paperback pages, and has the length to give lots of detail in the story, to really make the plots work and make the characters come alive. I felt the love, and the sorrow and then the danger. Poor Anna, and in a way poor Asher too...all he did was act as a vampire does, and the ending – well, that was perfect. Just perfect.
Stars: Five – its a book to join the keepers for re reading and I’m going to read more from Jennifer when I can.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Ah this novel… there is a lot to say about it. When I started reading it and when I saw the turn of the history, I admit that I was not sure to continue it. I was uncomfortable, and it’s true that I could hardly see how it would turn out but I’ll talk about that again later. In fact, this novel is the third book in a series that can be read independently. No, there really is no problem to start with any of these novels. But while the first two were giving the same kind of stories with a good light plot, this one tackles very sensitive issues. Yes it is finally a very dark novel, something to which I was not expecting. Have you seen this cover? The story doesn’t match it at all.

Although the summary gives us an idea of the novel, I admit that we can not really expect such a story. I’m not saying it’s not good, not at all! It took me a long time at the end of the story to know how to rate this third volume. You know, everything is fabulously well done and the story is very interesting, but everything is very difficult to read as well. We follow a young girl from the age of 9 years old. This is a little girl who was sold by her father in many ways, whether her body, or even her witch capabilities. She lives like that until a vampire, Asher, enters her life. I think that as this little girl has not really had a real childhood, everything became blurred in regard of her feelings. The summary talks about a father-daughter relationship between them that evolves during the story … I have to say there is no real relationship as it’s said initially. No, from the beginning we feel a little unhealthy relationship between them that is increasing along the chapters. There can be no real actions, but it does not change the state of mind of the girl who at 11 years has consistently succumbed to the charms of the vampire. Everything is very destabilizing I must say. I think it would have been better if the character was older but here it’s really too much. It may be personal, but it was quite difficult, I couldn’t understand that a girl of that age could have such thoughts. It was also hard to see that a man so old, a vampire, did not try to limit it all quickly and frankly.

We follow the story of a passionate and toxic love that begins very early in the life of a young girl who is willing to do anything for the man she loves. She wants to give him everything, her body, her soul, her spirit. He is also her life and her whole existence from the beginning. She would never have thought of leaving him, besides she is even willing to do anything for him. Yet whatever she thinks, life is not always what it is and our young Anna will have to face reality. Yes, because although she has given everything to this man, he could not return the favor. But wanting to leave does not mean that she can really do that, because he would never let slip her innocence and intense love.

So no it is not an easy story. Very delicate themes are used here, pedophilia, rape, drugs, toxic love. Although we feel that the whole is very unhealthy, we struggled to put the book down. We try to understand Anna, we wish her to understand the reality and we see her evolve, we see her realize what she has become. It was fascinating to see the young woman she became despite all that, to see the life she was able to create and we realize that she is willing to do anything to protect that. The ending is also very touching and I also admit that I did not really expect that.

It’s a tough story, difficult, sad, passionate. This is not something easy to read, but it’s something very interesting nonetheless. A story that is not expected at all.

Until Anna was nine she’s lived with her drug dealing father who’s not above using her magical talents to make a buck. This puts her living in a household that is always a party and no safe place for a child. Asher comes, hearing there is a powerful witch in the house. He wants Anna to raise the ghost of his old dead girlfriend. Anna knows the moment she meets Asher that they mean something to one another. She does as he asks and afterwards he ‘adopts’ her after the (most likely) brutal murder of Anna’s father. Asher takes Anna around the world. She learns different languages and has what sounds like an amazing life until she hits puberty, and then is admitted into the vampire world as Asher’s consort. As their romantic life takes lift off so does the abuse.

Witch Upon a Star is Harlow’s third book in A Midnight Magic Mystery series. Each book can be read independently of one another. While some of the characters intersect in one another’s lives, this is very brief. I also admit to really enjoying this series; however there are a couple things that bothered me. The first being that these, in my opinion are not mysteries, these are romantic stories. While (in my opinion) they’re marketed as light myserty/romance (look at the cover) this isn’t the case. These are sometimes action packed and gritty romances. Which I happen to enjoy!

I’m about to explain a ton of this book but before I do I want readers to be aware that Witch Upon a Star has some trigger warning content. It deals with a woman who grows up desiring her caregiver and abuser to the point she dangerously sides with him on more than a couple things. There are very abusive scenes where the word no becomes meaningless.

When Anna hits puberty she begs Asher to bring her out into the vampire world. The parties are not that much different from the ones her father had going on at his house, and it isn’t long before Asher is sucked into that world. Anna feels like she must do what she can to keep his attention, but doing so is killing her.

They meet Oliver, and the story of how he got involved with F.R.E.A.K.S is unveiled. Anna meets a family who she’s distantly related to. They offer her shelter for nothing in return. She also meets a F.R.E.A.K.S agent who gives her some sage advice and later becomes something more. All of this is the past, and not really what the mystery is. The mystery is like 10% of the book and is: Where in the world is Asher? In the opening scenes he hires someone to kidnap a twenty-nine year old Anna, her two sons and kill her husband. Now Anna wants to find him, before he finds her.

Despite the content I did enjoy this novel. There were parts that I really didn’t enjoy and firmly think the book could have done without, but this is a story about an abused girl who with a little advice decides to break out of an abusive cycle. The relationship between Anna and Asher is all kinds of messed up, but it’s a quick read and Harlow, like the last book in this series is kicking major ass (in the best kinds of ways). I hope these stories continue, and I also hope they keep not being actual mysteries.

This book is very loosely connected to the other two in the series, and I don't think it can be properly labeled as a mystery. Suspense maybe. A girl is trapped in an abusive relationship with a vampire for 10 years, and she must find a way to escape. It's very dark with sexual assault appearing multiple times throughout the story. If you want a fun cozy mystery, give this book a pass.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

WITCH UPON A STAR, the third book in the Midnight Magic Mystery series, is really tough for me to write a review for. I have seriously conflicting feelings about the events of the book and while it was not poorly written, I think the content is a bit off-putting and not what one would expect from this author.

Having read nearly everything Jennifer Harlow has written, I requested this book on the cover and series alone. I'm not even sure the book description was up when I requested it. However, WITCH UPON A STAR has none of the levity of the earlier books in the series, or any of Harlow's other books. In fact, I'm pretty sure I did not laugh a single time - though I felt many other emotions while reading.

Touching on some really dark themes, like child abuse, WITCH UPON A STAR was engrossing and a very serious read. Unfortunately, it was not what I expected. And even had I been more aware, I think there are still aspects of the story that would have disturbed me regardless. Anna's all encompassing love for and her attempts to seduce her guardian, Asher, even at age 13, before she really knew what she was doing, despite the fact that we were in Anna's head, were still difficult to digest.

While the quality of WITCH UPON A STAR matches the quality of Harlow's other books, the content was vastly different and really dimmed my enjoyment of the book. This is obviously a personal preference, and if you're aware of what you're getting going in, I think that this book could be enjoyable to some readers - with its mystery, the sweet romance between Anna and her husband, and the emotional moments, it definitely has things going for it. So, while it may not have been for me, if you enjoy Harlow's writing, and are aware of the content, you may want to give it a try.

Sexual content: Non-explicit sex scenes and rape scene, allusions to sexual assault of a child

An Ancient Vampire named Asher rescues Anna Olmstead from poverty, hunger, drugs and her abusive father. In their place he gives her wealth, comfort and love. As the ears pass Anna vows to always stand by Asher. Anna wants to settle down to forever, but Asher's desire for more controlling Voyeuristic lifestyle finally pushes Anna away. When, ears later Asher reappears in Anna's life with plans to kidnap Anna and her children which will she choose the mad who saved her when she was a child or the man she has built a world with and the children they share? Will she even have a choice?

I truly think that you can read Witch Upon a Star as a stand-alone novel. The previous two books in this series although have a passing mention to events in Witch Upon a Star, truly have little influence on the book. The range of emotions for Anna and Asher is wide and changes throughout the book. She grows in strength and maturity. I enjoyed watching the changes in her and became invested in her dreams of a future. Well-planned the story seems to flow smoothly keeping your interest centered on the story. There are no slow spots where a reader might become bored. My rate is 4 1/2out of 5 stars.

Don't let this cutesy cover fool you - inside lurks some pretty intense material. I originally thought this book might be some sort of supernatural romance, and it kind of is, I guess, but not the kind you might be looking for. This book is more about obsessive, dangerous love, love that is bad for you, the kind of love that might get you killed.

From the moment Anna meets Asher, she loves him. She is just a little girl, who doesn't know much of the world except pain and disappointment. Until Asher. He whisks her away from her life with neglectful parents, into one where he provides her with everything she could want. From pauper to spoiled princess, Anna's life is changing for the better. Their relationship as father/daughter is cute, and then goes a bit squidgy when Anna hits puberty, when Anna decides their relationship needs to evolve and turns up the Lolita. This behavior continues, without a like reaction from Asher, until she is a little older and of a more acceptable age to the reader. Then their relationship shifts again. and once they become lovers, it really goes dark.

Anna would do anything for Asher. She is obsessed with him, she wants nothing more for them to live a solitary, happy, normal life. But Asher is a vampire, a really old vampire, who despite his best intentions is really not that honorable. Anna stays with him through some really messed up years, until finally, she knows she needs to leave him. And like some abusive relationships, Asher doesn't want to let her go, and as a vampire, has more murderous ways of keeping her with him.

This book was dark and creepy and had some gross parts, but I did enjoy it. I felt it dragged a little near the ending, but overall, I liked it. I recommend it to anyone who likes vampire stories that aren't always sugarcoated and sparkly shiny, as this one is a bit dark and seedy.

Witch Upon a Star is the third book in the Midnight Magic Mystery series by Jennifer Harlow. It is tied to her F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad Investigation Series as it inhabits the same world and F.R.E.A.K.S. are the supernatural police force for in this world. This book takes place approximately 20 years before the events in book 1, What's a Witch to Do.

Anna story is told in 3 parts - the introduction, the flashback and then current events. The events all center around her birthday, so we learn about her starting from age 9 through 19 in the flashback and then skip ahead to her 29th birthday and the current events. The tale is dark, very, very dark. There is discussion of abuse, drug use, blood lust, violence and rape throughout the flashback sequence - some of it done to Anna as a child. But it's also a tale of love. Sometimes twisted, sure, but love in it's many guises.

I don't know what I was expecting with this story, but it was it had my full attention. I have never read a series that seems to be working it's way backwards before. Seeing events unfold that were told as history in other stories, have given this series and truly unique feel. While the other stories gave us some of the good and bad side of the witches and werewolves, I saw very little good in the vamps. They were scary, violent and mostly psychotic. I am giving this 4 stars, because it really pulled me in and captured my attention, but I would caution others. This isn't a light and fluffy read.

Thank you to Netgalley and Midnight Ink for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The first book in the series was almost a cozy mystery. The second was much harder edged, but not too far - it was a werewolf story. This one was an actual horror story. Awful in parts, scary in parts. and sweet. Well done.

Wow. For a book with a cover that belongs on the $1 shelf and a description of a cheap, overdone romance novel, this book was a huge surprise.

First of all, Anna. You are freaking amazing! She was a bloodied, raped, abused, emotionally destroyed survivor that was able to not only recover physically, but able to regain her personality and sense of purpose. It was so inspiring and gripping to follow her story back through time as she recanted her past. I loved how the story was told as a mystery and I honestly was excited and thrilled as the events unfolded and the gore and violence piled up. Even through all the blood, the author had an extremely positive message of love and redemption. Also Annie was a kickass fighter.

My favorite part of this story was how the vampires and vampire world was portrayed. It was realistic. Would living forever make you loving, caring or happy? Absolutely not. It would make you screwed up, jaded, and unable to feel human. Which if you were an undead, bloodsucking, violent monster that makes sense. Watching everyone you know die and killing people for their blood isn't a great environment for love. So a cheating, gory Asher was a much more believable result that a sparkling happy love that other novels preach of.
Also Nathan was adorable. Good for you Annie!

Jennifer Harlow always delivers a solid read. Solid plots with great characters, and enough twists to keep the reader engaged. I usually love her stories. But Witch Upon a Star is a sorry, sad story that made me very angry.

I think it is supposed to be a redemptive tale about a clueless girl making all the wrong choices and coming up roses in the end. But so much of the story focuses on the "Before" the "After" hardly made an impact on me.

The main character while a young girl hitched her star so to speak to a jaded world weary vampire to escape an abuse home. Her benefactor knowing full well he has no business caring for a child takes her from a dangerously dysfunctional home because she reminds him of everything that is missing from his existence.

For a while things are good. Until the starry eyed chit decides she is grown up enough to marry her vampire. It isn't long before things get out of hand, and she is trapped in a dangerous downward spiral. I spent most of the story waiting for her to grow up and stop behaving like a twit. When finally grows a spine I thought Halleluiah. Then of course the shit (and other icky substances) hit the fan.

When the dust settles she is minus several friends and plus a hero I'm not sure she deserves.

3.5 stars. I'm not sure why I bumped it up to 4. Probably only deserves 3 but I had a hard time putting it down. That fact alone usually makes me lean to the high side when I'm waffling. I reserve the right to reconsider the rating later.

It was much darker than I was expecting, especially considering the cartoonish cover and title. The bad guy was definitely cartoonish for sure and his actions odd and only hastily explained while Anna's character was laid bare. I know she was supposed to be wise beyond her years but the age incongruity (she's supposed to be between the ages of 9 and 19 when most of the rough stuff goes down) bugged me at times.

I'm gonna have to sleep on this one to unravel my mixed emotions about it.

PS Can some please edit these books before printing? I haven't seen so many misspelled words in a publication in quite a while and this is not a self published book as far as I can tell. Jeez...

I am a little lost with the series and its probably because I haven't read the 2nd book. No library in my area has it so I'll have to make do. There is a certain kind of beauty to Asher's fate towards the end. I think it was a perfect way to end the book. However, it seems like everything afterwards was almost jaunty or choppy. Maybe some more padding even a page or 2 would have been a softer landing for the last chapter. It just well, I'm more confused than excited because I don't know what the hell happened. Too few discombobulated sentences cram in what will surely be a whole bunch of chapters, maybe even 35% of the next book. Everything before p300 was great truthfully, if it ended there it would have been a perfect ending. But I like the crooked picture just the same. . .

A Jennifer Harlow book should begin with a warning advising readers that her books should not be read while depressed, sad, or suffering through one of life's rough patches because her characters have little sunshine to spare. Her books are dark, often violent, with an unpleasant body count. Her characters are very human, very imperfect, and sometimes unlikeable. I did not like Anna. I understood Anna, and I did not blame Anna for wishing to be rescued from a truly abusive existence, but I did not agree with all of Anna's choices. That said, I read Witch Upon A Star in one gulp, staying up far too late to finish it.

This one was not my cup of tea but others may enjoy it. It is about a young witch living with people who are allegedly her parents who are allowing her to be sexually abused for money. She has big powers and people come to her parents to have her do spells for them. One day a man comes to get her to do a spell for him so that he can communicate with his dead love. He is a vampire who changes her life by taking her away from these people and giving her a new and glamorous life as his ward. It has Interview with a Vampire overtones to it but it is different too. I think that was part of the reason it wasn't doing much for me. I felt like I had read it before.

An enjoyable paranormal romance. Anna is rescued from monstrously neglectful, abusive father (her witch mother abandoned her) by a centuries- old vampire Asher. They enter into a codependent relationship which becomes sexual when she turns 15. Enter Asher' s one time love Christine and let the sordid rivalry begin. Harlow has a good story- telling style and I liked watching Anna grow in in her healing via the kind love of her husband Nathan, a FREAKS agent. This is part of a series and will read more.

I liked it. I started the midnight magic mystery series last week and breezed through. I do so enjoy when a book is hard to put down. Generally it irkes me to read a series that jumps to different characters each book, but this was well done and tied them together in an interesting manner. Overall, I would recommend these books. But, good lord, you need a better editor. I haven't found books with so many errors in ages.

Please note: my fault with the book is my own.

I enjoyed the plot and the story. I did not identify with Anna in any of her ages so I had a hard time getting into the book. It was well written (as always) and engaging. I liked how it was Oliver's back-story. Without being his back story.

I enjoyed this book, although What's a Witch to Do was definitely my favorite of the series. I'm a little too OCD so the fact that the books were in reverse chronological order was hard for me.
