The three-year-old daughter of Mark Mallen’s old friend has been kidnapped. And when a child goes missing from San Francisco’s notorious Tenderloin District, there’s not much of a chance that she’s going to be found. But that won’t stop Mallen. When his first lead takes him to a murder scene with a stash of child porn, Mallen knows he’s on the right track. Now the only people who can shake him off the trail are two SFPD detectives who seem to be more involved in the case than their job requires. Knowing all too well that skid row has its own set of rules, Mallen must act alone to serve justice to those who would put innocent children at risk.
I’ve been a card-carrying member of the Mark Mallen fan club since reading UNTOLD DAMAGE, the first book in the series. I love dark, broken characters with huge hearts, and ex-cop, ex-junkie, ex-husband Mallen is the best of the best. There is serious darkness at the core of this story—missing children, dirty cops, desperate drug addicts—but Mallen’s moral compass has an inspiring ripple effect on those around him. The subplot with Mallen’s sidekick, Gato, kept me on the edge of my seat for many pages, and I’m hoping Mallen and Gato will return to bring that to a satisfying, kick-ass conclusion. A page-turner with two twists I didn’t see coming, INNOCENT DAMAGE kept me gripped from the first chapter. My only question: long do we have to wait for more Mallen?
The third in the Mark Mallen series by Robert K. Lewis, the pacing of the story is brisk.
The buddy-cop aspect to the relationship between Mallen and Gato is reminiscent of the banter shared by Spenser and Hawk in the Robert B. Parker novels.
The Mallen novels have thus far lacked for a clean ending but instead of feeling unsettled by how things develop in the ending, the way things are left at the resolution of each novel works for the less than idealized world that Lewis is crafting.
Despite the very dark subject matter, you can't help but root for the main character on his slow going road to redemption. Excellent read.
