Rose survived the accident that killed her friend. The problem is, the life she returns to scares her more than the night she almost died.

When Alek and Finn enter her world, Rose discovers the after-effects of the accident are worse than she thought. The slow recovery and fogged nightmares aren’t the only changes she needs to cope with.

Rose has an immediate and intense attraction to arrogant housemate Alek. This confuses her as much as the chilling effect of her inscrutable work colleague Finn. As Rose struggles to cope with her new reality, she learns that her connection to the two men threatens all their futures.

Alek has lived years closed off from people. He didn’t expect someone like Rose to come into his life and challenge the reality he grips onto.

If Finn doesn’t fix the mistake he made, his life is in danger. His desire to help and protect Rose makes his task difficult, especially when she’s the mistake he needs to fix.

When Rose disappears and Alek’s past catches up, she finds herself trapped between the living and the dead, struggling to fight her way back to reality. Alek and Finn could help her - but are they prepared to risk the consequences?

Between is a new series of urban fantasy books where the paranormal is a little different to usual.

It wasn't supposed to be like this!

It wasn't supposed to be like this...
A car accident, a coma, hospital. Rose waking to a life without her best friend. Rose has dream visions of shadowy figures at the crash site. Trying to move on, she gets a job, then, a room rented with decidedly odd flatmates...Rose finds her new world just keeps getting weirder.

The pacing at the beginning of the story nearly had me chucking the book, one sentence more without a promise of actual clarity and I'd never have gone forward. Too much moody and nothing to make me care...
Thankfully I stuck it out a few more sentences. I did come to care.
I highly suggest reading the attached bit from Finn's point-of-view, as it gives far more texture and depth to the story. That addition changed my mind on stars for my review. It's a sad sack 3.5 without Finn 's addendum.

**I was kindly given a copy of this book to read in exchange for a fair and honest review**

First Urban Fantasy/Paranormal genre book, I had read in ages. In fact, first book in that genre that has completely blown me away in ages!
Anybody who knows what books I love to read, knows I have a huge soft spot for anything outside of the norm and ordinary. I love to get lost in a world, that is far removed from our own. Where, were made to question other possibilities and existences. Ever since I started reading Paranormal and later Urban Fantasy, I find myself constantly searching for something new, different and exciting. Between, was certainly all that and much more.
Rose is trying to get through life, just one day at a time. After surviving an accident, that left her in hospital for quite some time. She has been left with some nasty and strange side effects. Following the accident and recovery, she found herself back at the same hospital, as a porter. Her way of working but avoiding people, she gets to go about her job without the fuss. Unless she is asked to go up to the intensive care ward. That is still too raw.
She also finds herself needing a new place to live and an advert pops up at the hospital. It seems perfect for her, maybe too perfect?
After checking the place out, and meeting the people she would be sharing with. Quirky and vibrant Lizzie, serious and studious Grace, and dark, brooding and seriously hot Alek. She decides to give the place a go.
Although Rose has recovered physically from the horrific accident that also took her best friend. She is still struggling with a lot of things. She also discovers some rather debilitating after effects of the crash. Not knowing why these episodes are happening to her, she feels frightened, and is questioning whether this sort of thing happens to other survivors of accidents.
With these new and unpredictable episodes, comes another new face in her life. Finn, a male nurse at the hospital, who seems to keep showing up to make Rose feel even more confused and uncomfortable. His very presence brings about a very odd reaction in Rose.
Through meeting all these new people, Rose discovers some very strange and scary things about herself. Her connection to Alek and Finn also throw Rose completely. From good to bad and back again. Making her head hurt in more ways than one.
I had read the Soul Ties series by Lisa Swallow, her other Urban Fantasy series last year and loved it. It was a completely different twist, on one of my favourite subjects within fantasy/paranormal genre. It took something that was used quite frequently within the genre and put a fresh twist on it. In Between, it's a subject I've not personally read much about before, so already this is something new and exciting and I couldn't wait to crack on with it. Lisa, had come up with a subject for Between, broke it down, and built it back up fresh. I absolutely love the detail that has gone in to this. The lore behind this story has been fully covered from every angle. With refreshing possibilities and enthralling characters adding to the mix.
Rose, who is frightened about the unknown regarding herself, yet still manages to keep a feisty and funny attitude to lighten things up. Her personality bounces off the arrogant and confident Alek, who walks around exuding sex appeal with his gruff, dark, 'you know you want me' attitude. She tells it like it is, and that just happens to be hilariously funny and refreshing. Then there is Finn, also not missing the sexy gene, but a totally different sort of guy. He has a cold, and somewhat dangerous edge to him, yet he also seems like he is carrying a lot of guilt, and is trying to make amends for something or put something right? Put the three together in the same room, and oh my god there is such an atmosphere, you can practically feel the electricity bouncing around the room, In the big testosterone face off!
Although those are the three main characters, the rest all add to the story perfectly. Between just wouldn't be the same without Tom Jones, the all knowing, geeky guy working down by the morgue. He is quite endearing in his classically clueless about life way. Yet he does seem to also be the guy everyone goes to, if they want to know something.

'Tom leans over and pulls a notepad out of his rucksack. He flicks through it and comes to a list of names. I crane my head.
"Why have you got my name in your book?"
"Your story was in the news; the girl who died for half an hour, and then came back to life. Nobody can die for half an hour and then live. You were all over the internet."
"Because of the sex tape?"
His eyes widen. "What?"
"I'm joking, Tom! Why the hell am I on the internet?"'

This book will undoubtedly entertain and captivate the reader, right from the start. It is packed with so much action and intrigue my head felt like it was going to burst. (In a good way) If you love a story that takes a different path from the norm and overused. Then Between is perfect. It will open your eyes to something exciting, your never too sure of the outcome, so your always kept guessing. The style of writing ultimately, always makes everything so much more smoother and addictive a read. Something that can't be put down, and Lisa's writing will always be flawless to me. I never have to worry about that, when I start a new book by this author, her trademark style is always entangled within the new stories and addictive characters she creates. This book is a perfect example of that for me. A fresh, new tale within an alternate world with gripping characters, all tangled up together, Lisa Swallow style.
5 foggy stars! :)

Interesting premise, disappointing characters

I was drawn in by the book blurb. The story sounded interesting, and it was, though it was also confusing at times. The main reason I did not enjoy the story was because of the shallow characters and undeveloped relationships between them. For example, the MC refers to people as "friends" after barely two interactions and there is really no basis for friendship. The characters felt flat and I didn't feel a connection to anyone.

Okay read

I like the characters and the idea of the story. It is well written but there was not a lot going on besides a confusing back and forth of one against the other. You don't really understand until the end.

Between by Lisa Swallow.
3 out of 5 stars.
A paranormal mystery about Demons, Angels, and Betweens among others.
Rose has recently recovered from a coma after having died in a car accident for half an hour. It's hard adjusting to a new life without her boyfriend who wasn't lucky enough to survive the accident with her, but she tries.
It's just that she isn't able to make friends very well now, people seem to want to stay away from her for some reason. Even the place that she finds to live is creepy and seems to have more secrets than a confessional booth! But it's the two men in her life that confuse her the most. Neither is quite what they seem and both keep warning her about the other.
I really liked this book as it kept me guessing about how the good guys were until the very last page. There are a couple of different characters that have their own stories that lead up to their involvement in the main book and some are nicely worked in.
I'd recommend this book to others interested in Demons, Angels, and other sorts of paranormal beings to do with 'going over to the other side'.

Without doubt a five star read, looking forward to more in this series ...

Between by Lisa Swallow is the first book in a series of books and the first book of this genre (Paranormal/Urban Fantasy) that I have read.

Rose is just existing in her world after an accident that left her in hospital for quite some time. Her accident left her with some interesting issues. After her accident and recovery, she finds herself a new place to live (if you can call it that - a very small one bedroom). She also finds herself back at the same hospital where she recovered, in a job as a Porter. She finds herself with unexplainable episodes after the accident and is quite perturbed by them. After meeting Finn at the hospital, she finds that he brings about strange reactions. She also meets Alek who she finds unpredictable and a more than a little strange. These three play an important role in the book and interact with each other in strange ways. I won’t go on here because I do not want to spoil the plot of the book.

I really enjoyed this story and it made me think about things differently, in that, perhaps there are other possibilities out there. Lisa writes well and the book flows. As stated before, I have never read this genre before, so I was unsure whether I would like it or not. I found that I loved it and look forward to more stories from Lisa in the future. I took my time reading this book, not because it was not interesting, just that life got in the way. However, slow I was, this was without doubt a five star read for me. Congratulations Lisa on a great read. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I am fairly new to the paranormal romance genre & I was just blown away by this book. I took my time reading Between because I didn't want to miss any of it or misunderstand anything. I am so glad I took my time because I truly felt like I was in the room with Rose, Alek & Finn watching everything unfold!
This book really makes you think outside the square & open your mind to endless thoughts & possibilities.
It is very easy to empathise with the characters & the situations they have found themselves in. Although Rose is quiet & withdrawn she is highly intelligent & quickly comes to terms with what she is faced with & works out how to deal with it. I felt a bit sorry for poor old Finn who has a huge burden to bear as it was his actions that have led them all to the point they are at. Then there is Alek.. Hmm well lets just say you need to read the book to have the pleasure of meeting Alek!
Lisa Swallow has written another brilliant book & at times I was holding my breath waiting to see what happens next, at other times I wanted to cry for all 3 of the main characters then something would happen it & would be laughing at Rose's reaction to it.
I was absolutely hooked from start to finish & I cannot wait to see how the story continues in book 2!!
Awesome job Lisa, you should be very proud of this little treasure!!!!

This is my first paranormal(urban fantasy) by his author and I must admit I wasn’t certain if I would like the plot (I don’t usually read about ghosts, demons, angels, or other things that go bump in the night). However, I was surprised when I fell in love with Alek and Finn (the hot guys) and Rose, the young woman trying to rebuild her life after a horrific accident that killed her best friend and almost ended her life. What do you do when you are attracted to two very hot guys, both of which have the power to kill you with a touch or a kiss? And of course, both of these guys are really into you, or are they? Can you trust either one of them, or anyone else in this new town and job? This book is like no other I have read. I have become addicted to this new series and I’m anxiously awaiting book two to see how Rose, Alek, Finn, and some of their quirky friends deal with a new threat created when Alek and Finn try to save Rose from a fate worse than death. I recommend this book to YA and older due to adult situations and (not explicit) violence.

I was provided a prepublication copy of this book for an honest but not necessarily favorable review.

From the cover to the delicate Rose to the entire storyline, this book is very fey. It's like peeping through the veil to a life of shadows, shades, demons, angels, witches and other entities within our own world. Ms Swallow's style of writing and her use of the recovering Rose for a first-person perspective only serve to emphasise the ghostly feel of the story.

There's no cliffhanger here - the book drifts to its natural end, though leaving events open to make way for a sequel or a whole series, as I understand will be the case. This had a nice balance of paranormal to romantic elements - I'd go as far as to say it's more urban fantasy than romance.

I enjoyed the story and I look forward to reading more of this series.

I enjoy paranormal stories of any kind but I especially love the ones that don't follow a set mythology. Why should we have to write according to a set of rules that already exist? Why can't we create a whole new world?

That's what I like most about Between, it deals with spirits, demons and vampires but not as we know them.

The characters are strong and the plot moves along at a great pace. Hanging out for the next book in the series!

The start of this new series sucks you in immediately as it is a fresh idea in the paranormal genre that holds great promise to become an outstanding series! Rose, Alek and Finn have difficult obstacles to overcome in this book that show you the depth and strength of their characters. Well at times Rose could be flighty she still conquered her obstacles and became truly enjoyable. All though this book was not heavy on the steamy romance it had enough suspense to keep the pages turning.

Between is something unique and different from your ordinary paranormal romance. It's refreshing. I love the characters, and wouldn't mind being in Rose's position - in between a hot reaper and a sexy demon. The choices Rose has to make are heartbreaking and I was getting teary by the end. I need to know what happens next!

Great plot that carried out a good story until the characters had to go and ruin it with an exasperating amount of profanity. The language became so distracting I debated moving on to another book.
