Il giardino al chiaro di luna

Rate this book

Just a good, all around, read. Some history, some mystery, some romance, a little intrigue, and a story that bounces between 1910 Sumatra and present day England and Germany. I have the feeling it would make a good movie. I listened to this on Audible; it was narrated by Justine Eyre who is one of my favorite narrators

The book is not boring (which is no easy feat), you'll be entertained, but that's about it. As memorable as those Hollywood romantic films that follow the same script over and over and over. You'll find all the stereotypes, the clichés, the bad dialogs, the predictability, and of course the happy ending. Easy to read, but not good writing. I wish the book had focused on Rose and spared me the ramblings of the adolescent-like main character waiting to be saved by prince charming.

When antiques dealer Lilly is handed an antique, very unique violin and told that she is the rightful owner, her interest is piqued and her search to find out its origins will take her from Berlin to London to Sumatra in this story which is told in two timelines; 2011 and Lilly’s search and turn of the twentieth century Sumatra where we meet Rose, the original owner of the violin.

I loved the parts of the story to do with Rose and Sumatra, they felt very colourful and the characters really came alive and I totally lost myself in these sections of the book. By contrast, however, the modern day sections just did not have the same charm or magic; the characters didn’t feel so natural and it just didn’t seem to flow as nicely. Most importantly though, Lilly’s search was moved forward by a series of rather unlikely coincidences and indeed the whole story is concluded on another that just felt like one coincidence too many.

Having said that, it is an entertaining read that really kept my interest and is well worth picking up.

I got this book as a Kindle first selection in January and picked it from what I already thought was a pretty poor selection of books on offer for the month. The book tells the story of Lilly Kaiser, a German antique dealer and young widow. One day a mysterious old man comes to her shop and gives her a violin and tells her it is hers. She is intrigued and wants to find out why the man thinks it is hers and what is the history of the violin. This leads her on a trail to London, Italy and Sumatra to track down its origins. The story jumps between modern day and the first decade of the 20th century, intermingling Lilly's quest to find out the violin's history with the stories of two of it's original owners. It had a lot of potential to be quite a good book. Originally written in German and translated to English, maybe something was just lost in translation. I found the writing to be unsophisticated, the dialogue between characters completely unbelievable and the story development predictable and full of cliches. I did read the book obsessively, but more just to get to the end so I could move on to something better quality.

This is a story that encompasses romance, mystery and intrigue in the two stories that emerge. There are two stories set in different time spans linked by a old violin. I quickly got absorbed in the story which centres on Lilly Kaiser, a Berlin antiques dealer. The violin is delivered to Lilly by a strange man who tells her that it belongs to her. With Ellen and Gabriel, Lilly follows the trail of the violin to the mysterious Rose Galloway and her curious disappearance. What happened to her? Running alongside is the love story of Lilly that emerges. I was particularly caught up in Rose's story. I found this a good read for anyone looking for a entertaining story.

Romanas man iš tiesų patiko.

Was looking for a book with strong female characters, was not so pleased with what I found: two of the major characters lose so much of themselves because of falling in love, making it a freedom clipping experience and of total emotional and even practical dependence. Most of what women talk or think about are men... All in all Rose's character is the most complete of all. The settings of Sumatra, London, Italy, Hamburg and Berlin are quite nice, though.

After the excellent Inheritance of Lion Hall (due mid-2021 English translation - my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...), I wanted to explore more of the translated books of the author.

The Moonlit Garden is not quite as awesome as Inheritance since it is a bit too cliche-ic (meeting the future love interest randomly in the plane and then him being the one with the skills/position necessary to help crack the secret, really..., not to speak of other "coincidences", some fairly predictable, some that made me sort of roll my eyes again and the characters by and large quite privileged to have connections everywhere, fly on a whim anywhere - as it is 2012 luckily, not 2020), while being from the secret past a few generations ago explored by the present descendants subgenre (which I love when done superbly like most of K Morton's novels say), but I still loved the descriptions, the characters, the locations, and even the storyline despite its roll the eyes, really..., moments once in a while, so I definitely would recommend it for an absorbing read

It is a love story with enough mystery, exotic landscape, and variable climate to keep it interesting, even intriguing. There are numerous twists and turns in the story-line that verge on predictable, which is not distracting. One or two aspects of the story-line left me bewildered because such circumstances and outcomes, as intriguing as they are, just do not fit into the real world of statistical probability.

This book did not work for me. I never connected with nor felt anything for any of the characters. There was no depth to these people! Then the coincidences started piling up. I did manage to finish but can't recommend it.

I'm currently obsessed with German authors, thank God for translators. I got this book from Amman in my last visit and it's amazing so far, I think I'll order the author other two translated books, also I'm jumping to audiobook when busy and the reader Justine Eyre has the most sensational voice ever!

The information and locations in this book are surprising and new to me. I love to learn about new places when I read. I added Sumatra in Indonesia on my travel list, it seems like a magical place, I love cinnamon but never thought it came from a tree, so I googled it and was surprised.

After reading many books with the same theme of going from past to present, I had an idea about what might happen. I enjoyed the book and how sensitive it was. Lilly Kaiser is an endearing character. The story is about Lilly who runs a boutique shop in Germany, she is widowed and her life is in a rut, one day an old man comes into her shop and hands her an old violin saying it belongs to her and leaves. Lilly is bewitched by the instrument and it's rose and discovers a piece of music inside the case titled The Moonlit Garden. She heads to London to her best friend, because Ellen is an expert in music and in her flight she meets Gabriel Thornton, who is the first man to attract her since the death of her beloved husband and he's also a musician.

With the help of her friends and luck, she uncovers the mystery of the violin and it's original owner Rose Gallway, she travels to Italy and Indonesia as well and as we read on some chapters are from Lilly's POV, others are by Rose and Helen, the three owners of this violin. It's a beautiful story and it's sad and magical as well. But I really wanted Rose to end up with her young man, living the dream of being happy in love and a success story.

U 2011. godini, vlasnici malene trgovine antikviteta u Berlinu, Lili, nepoznata starija osoba donosi violinu s rezbarijom ruže na pozadini i misteriozno nestane.

I think this was a highly rated ebook on Amazon because it was free. The plot had tremendous potential, but unfortunately did not deliver. Perhaps it was lost in the translation. The author or translator felt the need to tell every detail as if the reader had no ability to infer meaning and it became tiresome. I felt compelled to get out my red pen and edit, edit, edit. This book would, perhaps, have been better if it was half as long. During the droning on of detail, it was easy to figure out the plot outcome - and it was predictable for the most part. I liked the character Rose, but Lilly? Lilly needed to grow up.

beautiful intriguing plot, alas badly written. really badly written. I had to make an effort to continue reading it. I wanted to know its ending so I continued. I dont know if it was the English translation or of the writing is also poor in German, but there were repetitions, redundancy in the paragraphs, repeting same concepts over and over, or words that kept on appearing/ often times the author thought of adding explainati0ns for simple acts, totally uneccessary. a pity because the story is captivating and it could have made a very good book.

Man labai patiko! Knygą "marinavau" labai ilgai, nes kažkodėl įsivaizdavau, jog man nepatiks.

2.5 stars, rounded up because it didn't annoy me at any point and it was such an easy listen. This book is good for what it is. It's fairly predictable, but the mystery is enjoyable, though parts of it were fairly obvious. The story is a bit unbelievable and I'm not sure how all the busy people made so much time for a rather benign event, but if one looks past realities, it's a fine beach read. I was a bit disappointed this wasn't better since, though it was published by Amazon Crossing (which publishes books I tend to find poorly done), The Moonlit Garden was originally published in Germany and then translated and published by Amazon Crossing, this usually makes it a bettet book. This book wasn't awful but it wasn't well done either. A pretty middle of the pack book which I wouldn't recommend, but also wouldn't discourage someone from reading.

What a wonderfully enchanting story. The audible narrator did such a good job with the accents for different characters that I could tell who was who just by the accent and tone she was using. And there are quite a lot of characters in this book. I don't think this would be a book I would have chosen myself but it was available as a free book through Amazon Prime with audible narration so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did, it was just a truly great book.

The Moolit Garden by Corina Bomann starts off as a story about two childhood friends, as close as sisters, who both grew up in Berlin, Germany. One friend, Ellen, moves to London, where she marries an English gentleman, who is not only rich, but who loves her unconditionally and provides a good home, which is actually a mansion, for her, and their marriage produces two lovely daughters. Ellen, the German woman just mentioned, is a multi-talented person, a great cook at home, specializing in gourmet dishes, a lover of nature and beauty, a gardener, with a mischievous sense of humor and a generous heart, and she wants more than anything else for her best friend, Lily, in Berlin to be happy and find her life again. Ellen is also a wonderful mother to her teenage daughters, depriving them of nothing, and has a professional career in the music industry and can play the violin rather beautifully. The other friend, Lily, still living in Berlin, Germany, has not had such good fortune. She recently lost her husband and barely thrives as the owner of an antique shop, and is frightened of traveling and of taking a chance on love again. But one day, a strange man enters Lily’s antique shop and hands her a violin, which he says belongs to her, and suddenly disappears out the door. Lily’s first instinct is to contact her best friend, Ellen, in London, and suggest that she, Lily, come for a visit. On the plane to London, Lily, who is carefully keeping her new violin in her hands, meets a man named Gabriel with whom she engages in conversation. It turns out that Gabriel is the administrator of a famous music school, and is involved in research about former students who rose to prominence in the past for their outstanding talents. Lily and Gabriel say their goodbyes once they arrive at the airport, and Lily assumes she will never see this pleasant, handsome young man again. But fate has an altogether different plan in store for them, as the various characters’ lives become entwined in the surprising turn of events that follow, which involves research on the part of Gabriel and his musicologist employees, and Lily’s travel to Sumatra, Indonesia, and the deepest parts of the jungle, where monkeys swing from the trees and tigers hide, and beautiful flora and fauna abound, and Lily dares to explore a plantation with a newfound friend, and where she, who was once so sad and lonely, discovers adventure and uncovers treasure, which helps her open her heart to love again, as the different protagonists join in the quest to unravel the secret of the mysterious violin and the music sheet inside the case, which is titled “The Moonlit Garden.” This is both a beautiful love story and a suspenseful mystery, as layer after layer of history is peeled away to reveal the secret of The Moonlit Garden.
