Moonseed Trilogy #2

Borrowed Promises

Rate this book
On the night of the new spring moon, a near-fatal accident propelled Victoria Reeves-Ashton over a century back in time to awaken in the body of Katherine Kamarov. Now, after three months of pretending to be Katherine and laboring to repair relationships damaged by Katherine's brash and selfish personality, quiet and gentle Victoria finds that her heart is putting down roots in Katherine's world, in her family relationships, and especially in a deepening friendship with Katherine's winsome cousin Michael. Hidden letters reveal the story of other moonseed-time travelers like herself-and Victoria realizes that she and Katherine will likely be returned to their own times the following spring. Tension mounts when a rich and handsome suitor applies to marry her, and Victoria must choose whether to accept him for Katherine's sake or to follow her own heart. Ryan Ashton, the husband Victoria left behind, is baffled by the woman his wife has suddenly become. Unwilling to believe her story about an exchange in time, Ryan struggles to understand the stark transformation of his timid, remote wife into a sexually aggressive and captivating siren. Against his better judgment, he falls hard for this new woman who is a perplexing mixture of cruelty, sensuality, and tenderness, a woman who he suspects has the power to either break his heart or heal the aching loneliness he has lived with all his life.

Victoria continues to live as Katherine and tries to make changes in Katherine's life and build bridges with her family. The two characters are very different and I think that if you were in that position you would act as Victoria does. Both women are out of time but they do start to adapt to their new worlds and form ties with the people there. What will happen when they are forced to return? A great follow up to the first book.

I would like to thank LibraryThing for granting me a copy of this e-book to read in exchange for an honest review. Though I received this e-book for free that in no way impacts my review.

Katherine is living it up in Victoria's life, loving her gorgeous new body and all of the astounding things that have changed since her time. But poor Ryan doesn't know what to make of 'Katherine,' the assumed personality the shrinks say his injured wife is hiding behind. But the longer he is with the more he opens up his heart to her, even when she sometimes seems to be two totally different people. One personality at night, and a different one during the day. But he's willing to keep the confused Victoria if it means he gets to keep the nighttime version as well. Katherine, having the advantage over Victoria as far as knowledge over the switch, has opted to live every moment in the present rather than worrying over a future she can't control. But will that be enough to allow her to be where her heart tells her she belongs?

Victoria, who is in Katherine's body has slowly settled in to Katherine's life, finding that much to her surprise she is truly enjoying herself. But she is aware now that she may not get to stay, so she's afraid to follow her heart in case it isn't the choice Katherine would make, or want upon her return. Although she has begun to mend some of the ravaged relationships Katherine escaped from, she is only willing to go so far when it comes to adult choices of the heart for herself. She has no problem changing her relationship with her younger brother, and with neighbors. Yet she is still afraid of fully committing to living in the moment as Katherine is doing in the future. Is her fear really because she wants to leave Katherine choices if she returns, or is it just part of her naturally shy persona? Will her timidity be the cause of both women's joy, or of their ruin?

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This book ended up getting only three stars from me for a few reasons. While I still love the story, this book had quite a few flaws.

The dialogue of this book did not always seem natural and often made the character seem unbelievable. Especially between Brett and Stephanie. I have never heard teenagers talk quite so formally.

Also, every person in this book is remarkably gorgeous. And the author doesn't mean on the inside. They are all described as having beautiful or handsome features and being strong or graceful as well as having a magnetism that everyone around them gets caught up in. Because of this, it sometimes felt like the characters are almost the same basic person just with a different name. I would have liked to see some variety in the personality and demeanor of the characters.

I found that with this book, time isn't very consistent. There will sometimes be a break in a chapter and suddenly we are somewhere completely different with no explanation as to how long it has been since the previous scene. At one point it skips a month entirely without any explanation to what happened in that month. I wish that the author would have explained more about what was happening when time suddenly moved on or why it did so.

All in all, I enjoyed this book and want to finish the series. I am very interested in seeing how everything is going to wrap up. I hope that some of the flaws that were in this book will be fixed by the time the final book is written. I think that the author has a great story that she is writing but all of the little flaws end up building on one another and making the story less enjoyable.

I would suggest this series for lovers of time-travel, romance, and just a fun and fast-paced read.

I was disappointed. This is the second book in a series. I guess I should have read the first one first. I was a little lost. I had a hard time keeping track of the time traveling characters and who was in love with who. I was interested because it is about time travel, but it had none of the elements of time travel that I enjoy. I appreciate the contradictions and puzzles concerning effecting history or the future. I think romance readers might enjoy it.
