JC Rycroft is a queer fantasy author living and writing on unceded Wadawurrung land in Australia. Their work draws on high and epic fantasy tropes, mixed with a dollop of queer romance, humour and wit, flawed but fabulous feminist heroes and diverse-in-all-the-ways characters, liberally sprinkled with philosophical concepts brought to life. She loves bringing together the apparent contradictions: high theory and silly humour, profound theoretical concerns with a rollicking good story, and ordinary people with unexpected demands to heroism that somehow only they can answer.

The Player and the Prince by JC Rycroft. My, my, what double entendre! The meaning only sinking in when I finished. Duh. I feel like a dunst.

At this point, having read 3 of the author’s previous books of the same universe, it’s no surprise The Player and the Prince was an amazing read. It’s just expected now. Like a Lee Winter book or something.

The emotional play - excitement, anger, disgust, foreboding, all of it choreographed masterfully by the author. I was emotionally exhausted by the end of this 180+ page novella. Exhausted but satisfied.

Liv and Des’s fantasy world has dug its claws in my mind’s many worlds it is holding. And the author just continuously adds structure and characters to it, making it more imagined and full as ever before.

I loved Liv's story arc. This is a great introduction to Liv and how she becomes who she is...or becomes MORE of who she is.
This is spicy and scary, sometimes hard to read but it is excellent writing. Feminine rage is all it's glory!
We get flashes of Des as Liv looks back and we get to see how effected Liv really was. I loved reading this from her point of view.
There is love and loss, intrigue and clever, clever Liv showing us how easily she manipulates those around her. The cost of that manipulation is also shown. That character growth makes this a beautiful read and enhances the trilogy so much!
My rating is 4.5 rounded for GR
Thank you to the author for this ARC to read and review. My thoughts are my own.

j.c. rycroft’s the player and the prince is a brilliant showcase of ambition, power, and playing the long game when the deck is stacked against you. liv equitor isn’t just an actress—she’s a strategist, a woman who knows exactly how to wield charm, wit, and sheer determination to carve out the life she wants. in a world where men call the shots, liv refuses to let them hold the pen to her story.

liv is the kind of protagonist you can’t help but root for—clever, calculating, and always five steps ahead. she doesn’t just dream big; she schemes big, and watching her navigate court politics and backstage betrayals is nothing short of thrilling. every move is deliberate, every word chosen with care, because one wrong step could cost her everything. but liv? she doesn’t break. she adapts, she fights, and she refuses to be silenced.

let’s talk about the writing—because oh my god, the writing. rycroft’s style is the perfect mix of elegance and bite, like a beautifully wrapped dagger. it’s evocative, it’s sharp, and it absolutely nails the grandeur of a period drama while keeping the storytelling snappy and fresh. it’s the kind of prose that makes you pause just to appreciate how good it is before diving right back in.

and the world-building? stunning. this is my first time in rescalin, and i never once felt lost. the details are rich, the politics deliciously tangled, and the atmosphere drips with intrigue. the theater isn’t just a stage here—it’s power, influence, survival. the whole setting is so immersive, i could practically hear the rustle of velvet curtains and the murmur of scheming nobles.

now, about that ending—it left me wanting more. not gonna lie, it wasn’t what i expected—felt a little unexpectedly subdued—but i have high hopes that liv’s story isn’t over yet. she has way too much potential for this to be the final curtain call, and i’ll be first in line for whatever comes next. also, i guess i need to rearrange my tbr pile because i’m adding every book in this series to my list immediately.

if you’re looking for a story with ambition, fire, and a protagonist who refuses to be anyone’s pawn, the player and the prince absolutely delivers. it’s a tale of survival, strategy, and a woman who’s done playing by anyone else’s rules. and honestly? i can’t wait to see what she does next.

This is everything I could have wanted in a backstory for Liv — and then some. I went in with high expectations, and this novella shattered every single one.

Liv is a force of nature. She’s a deeply complex character, and for those who don’t fully understand her, she might be difficult to like (in the previous books). But for me? She’s absolutely incredible. Every moment of this novella feels essential to understanding her—her ambition, her cunning, and the layers of control she wields in a world that constantly tries to strip it from her. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I found myself seeing pieces of myself in Liv, which made her journey even more powerful. Probably the best character I've EVER READ.

I am shocked and amazed at how distinct Liv’s perspective feels compared to Des’ in the main books. Rycroft absolutely nails the differences between them—their voices, their thought processes, their emotional landscapes. It’s impressive how much nuance and depth she brings to these characters, making them feel like real, breathing people.

And then there’s Eloise. I still have some lingering frustration with her from the main books, but seeing her here made me appreciate her in a way I hadn’t before. Her relationship with Liv adds so much to the story and I loved how it was explored.

Of course, I can’t ignore the phenomenal spice and intensity woven throughout. This novella is bold, fiery, and utterly gripping, balancing court intrigue, backstory, and makes the relationship between Liv and Des even more incredible. Liv is flawed and utterly glorious. I’m in awe of what Rycroft has done here—this is an incredible addition to The Everlands Cycle, and I loved every second of it.

Thanks so much to the amazing author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

The Player and the Prince by JC Rycroft is a fantastic addition to the world of The Everlands Cycle. It gives us insight into the character of Livinia Equitor, a very important player, indeed.

There are two suggested reading orders for the existing novels in this series. The reading path I am on is the redemption arc and I think this is the best way to go for the most exciting revelations.
1. The Blood-Born Dragon
2. A Hired Blade
3. The Timeless Legion
4. The Player and The Prince

I love Rycroft's writing style and really appreciate the development we are privy to for Liv throughout the series. This addition truly helps round out her character and highlight the important qualities she possesses, such as her strength, resilience, determination, and will to survive. It also highlights the depth of her emotional damage and PTSD. We understand better what drives her and why she makes certain choices. Liv is a force to be reckoned with.
I enjoy the foreshadowing and connecting the puzzle pieces from the previous novels. Kudos for non-binary rep, and sex and body positivity. Did I mention sex? Yeah, lots of sex, sapphic and otherwise. Also, check trigger warnings.
Great world-building as usual from JC. I am glad I read this novella. It impacts the overall feel of the series and presents a more complete and satisfying account.
I recommend the whole series!

I wasn’t sure how reading about Liv as a prequel would help. It took me a while to warm to her in the main novels so i wasn’t sure of a book about her. To be honest I wanted Des to steer clear of her.

But I think this book actually helps you navigate the crazy map of Liv, it explains why she is so insecure and so pro at pretending she is in control. I fell in love with her entirely in this and it her vulnerability that makes her all the more amazing as a character and def one of my favourite characters in the whole story. I also fell more in love with Eloise. I loved The duchess’s story ark in the main books and would totally read a book entirely about Eloise and all of her dirty escapades with pretty woman. But I do hope she eventually finds love also. And I’m here for that novel also. Can’t help it…. I love the older woman.

This is a spicy 🌶️ book with great representation with both sapphic and a non-binary character.

I received this book as an ARC from the author for my honest review.

Since the first Everlands Cycle novel was released, I have waited with anticipation for every subsequent book. This novella -like every other book in this series- does not disappoint.
This novella made me go from laughter to near tears to feeling *very* warm from the spice. This book connects the pieces of Liv expressed in the previous books and connects them into a cohesive whole. Through this, you come to understand how Liv’s trauma and PTSD shape her interactions with the world and have forged her into the strong, resilient woman she is. We grow to better understand how her relationship with Des evolved, and how the break down of that relationship impacted her.
This novella is best read after having read the previous Everlands Cycle books.

Perfect name for this novella! I was anxiously waiting for the meeting of the Prince. I loved being in Liv’s head! So so much made sense. All the beautiful foreshadowing. Oh that Rover reading…I very much recommend starting with A Hired Blade. If you want chronological then read this after but I’d still suggest reading the two main books before this novella, although maybe reading this before those two would put a very different perspective on Liv. But falling for her before really knowing her mind really made it even more sweet/emotional while reading The Player and the Prince…

The Player and the Prince by J.C. Rycroft is a fantastic sequel novella to The Blood-Born Dragon! This book adds so much dimension to Liv (who is already a really interesting character in The Blood-Born Dragon). She is driven by passion in her pursuit as a Player and in her pursuit as a lover.

I absolutely love this world and the Sapphic storyline throughout the series. Liv is extremely confident in her sexuality and acts on it in a believable way. I was rooting for her success as a women in a male-dominated world. Liv is a flawed character, but with this prequel, you can see how she is a product of her circumstances.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/5 I would absolutely recommend you pick up this novella (and the whole series in genetic)! There are so many amazing things about this novella I'm just smiling from ear to ear!

There are two reading order recommendations: A Hired Blade, The Player and the Prince, The Blood-Born Dragon, and then The Timeless Legion. Or you can read The Blood-Born Dragon, A Hired Blade, The Timeless Legion, and The Player and the Prince. I have taken a chaotic route in reading this series...I have read The Blood-Born Dragon and now The Player and the Prince 😆 I really liked reading The Player and the Prince after The Blood-Born Dragon because Liv's actions in The Blood-Born Dragon were more impactful without knowing more of her past. Either order would be enjoyable I'm sure, but that was my preference 😄.

This Everlands novella, The Player and the Prince, follows Liv and her adventure before we come across her in Book 1 (The Blood-Born Dragon). I really detested her in Book 1 (how dare she does what she does to Des!) but I’ve changed my mind since reading this novella 😆 I know what needs to have happened before the events of Book 1, but it was such an adventure to read, finding out Liv’s backstory, her motivations, and more about the rulers of this world. It just really brought more colour to this series!

I also love the Australianisms in The Everlands Cycle - it is a fantasy world, but amongst the fantastical creatures you also come across wombats and wallabies. I’m now waiting for a mention of Woop Woop 🤣

Thank you JC for this eARC, it was such an amazing reading experience- and the fastest I’ve gone from eewww what is this character (in Book 1), to omg I love her, she needs and deserves all the good things (after starting this novella)

(ARC received for review).

It's always interesting to get inside the head of a character we've only seen from somebody else's PoV, especially when that PoV is of someone who has good reasons not to trust them, and this novella from a promising new voice in the genre does just that. People who've already read The Blood-Born Dragon and The Timeless Legion will be familiar with the oft-unpredictable (at least to Des) character of Liv, who takes centre stage here.

In a nice touch while the story, which is set just before The Blood-Born Dragon, sets up some of the events of that book, that setup is almost incidental (at least to Liv, who has no idea of the events that are being set in motion and is much more concerned with her own affairs.)

*Thank you to net galley and dreamscape media for audio review copy*

I really enjoyed this one. Liv was such an interesting character that went for her own desires. With the pressure from men to sleep with them would come up and she had to defend herself I wanted to rush to her defense as well. I really want more and my only problem is that this feels like half a story instead of a completed novella.

Since I listened to the audiobook I will also say the narrator did a good job, but there was some sound issues and it sounded like a mic was being hit a couple of times. I'm not sure if this will be fixed or not.

Another great book by JC Rycroft.

I didn't think I'd be able to feel empathy for Liv, but I really did.

Well written. All I can say is I want to read more, more, more of the Everland Cycle series.

A thoroughly good read even if you didn’t like Liv much in the main series. This makes her part of the story so so much more, to the point where I am now on a reread mission. Following one of the author’s reading order recommendations is, well, highly recommend. Off to reorganize my TBR pile for an unplanned reread. Providing a voluntary honest review of this ARC.

The Player and The Prince (ARC Edition) by J.C. Rycroft

I’ll admit that when I first started reading The Everlands Cycle series, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Liv - being a self-confessed Team Des girl. However, after finishing The Player and The Prince, I see her in a completely different light.

Liv is a remarkably strong woman, and getting a deeper look into her life has given me nothing but absolute respect for her. This book has it all—love, entertainment, intrigue, trauma (with a touch of spice!), and I honestly wished it had been a little longer just so I could spend more time following her journey.

For devoted Everlands Cycle readers who have already completed the first three books, I highly recommend revisiting the series and following J.C. Rycrofts suggested reading order.

It's definitely worth the read - thank you, J.C., for another amazing instalment!

Where I was not a huge fan of Liv, she definitely softened me with this prequel novella in the Everlands Cycle.

Liv bursts off the page and her struggles to fight a very patriarchal society. The way she handles herself set back after set back is remarkable, but the poor trauma riddled Liv is definitely very very hard on herself.

It’s a wonderful insight in her character and it also gives some more information and insights to the events that follow.

An entertaining romp seen through the eyes of a Sapphic actress who has to be on her toes to avoid the lustful groping of the Troupe’s director. Told in a time of castles and spoiled princes, it’s an expertly narrated tale of what a woman must do to stay true to herself and her desires.

While I enjoyed this, I think it might have resonated more if I had read the other books in the series. With the ALC, I spent much of the book confused but willing to understand what I could. It was nicely written and I felt for the FMC and her plight.

Thank you to Netgalley and Dreams cape Media for the ALC.

Fills in some Details
Lavinia's story when she and Dess split the first time, before she gives Dess the egg.
First glimpse at Eleanor. It's insight into Lavinia: her life lessons and choices. I'm not a Lavinia fan, but the book is as well written as the other books in the series. I relate so much more to Dess, so my bias is in that only.
I struggled to read it thru in one setting, which is unusual. It didn't hold my attention like the other books have. (No dragon, maybe the issue!)
Lots of scenes but tastefully done without a ton of details. Still some descriptors that will turn off any cozy readers.
A good description of someone who uses her sexuality and gender to get what she wants, create her own power. Can perhaps change your understanding of sex workers, perhaps?
Worth the read as always from Rycroft.

This series just has no skips! Finally experiencing this world from a different POV was excellent. What a shine on female rage and the reasons behind the cut throat nature of some people. When the world shows you you can only trust yourself, how is our girl supposed to have her heart open and caring at all times?

Fun romp, with LGBTQ themes that were a twist for the fantasy novel. Will read more by this author. The nuanced character development and emotional depth give the story both heart and suspense, making it a gripping read for fans of political thrillers and forbidden romance.

Wow oh Wow talk about a 360 character change (in the best way) Liv is a character seen in The Blood Born Dragon (a must read) with a heartless attuited. In this novella, you learn the endless hardships to elevate her passions but living in a man's world, she is only an object of desire. I really loved this novella and cant wait to read more.

I got given this as an ARC reader. J.C. Rycroft is one of my favourite authors. The series is on par with The Inheritance Cycle, The Moonfall Series and the Empyrean series. I highly recommend

Liv is an actor in a troupe that travels the kingdom of Rescalin and performs. After a meeting to remember with the Duchess of Scyless, she is given two letters to take to the King in Pastria. One letter is to allow her current troupe to perform in the competition and the other is for the King to allow Liv to put together her own troupe.

Liv succeeds in getting her troupe in the competition but has to win over The Prince to have a chance to put together her own troupe. A Prince that has eyes for Liv and her eyes are for anyone else but The Prince. Will her troupe win the competition? Will she win the rights to have her own troupe?

This is my first book from J.C. Rycroft and it is a Novella. I am lucky this Novella was written in a way that, even without having any prior knowledge of Rycroft’s books, I was able to read this without issue. I wouldn’t say it is a standalone but it made sense to me and it gave me a back story on Liv. This novella has made me want to pursue the rest of Rycroft’s books. There are a few mentions of a past relationship with Liv and Des that I can tell there is a deep connection and I know the other books in this series cover that relationship.

One thing I absolutely loved about this novella and I’m guessing it is the same in the other books in the series, but I love how comfortable Liv is with her sexuality. If she’s attracted to a character and they're attracted to her, it’s more than likely on. Liv also receives a gift in this Novella and I knew exactly what it was without even reading the other books. Not saying what it is, no spoilers. If you like J.C. Rycroft, you’ll love this. If you haven’t read any of Rycroft’s work and you choose to read this, it will make you want to read more.

I loved spending time with Des in the first three books of the Everlands Cycle. But - until now I've only known Rescalin, Liv (the woman Des "both loves and hates") and all the intrigue that goes hand in hand with them through Des' unreliable eyes, so The Player And The Prince is a real gift. There have always been gaps in these stories, tantalisingly referred to, and JC Rycroft has now filled them and done so brilliantly.

This is Liv's story and it's one I won't forget. This quote sums up her past and it's affects on her in all aspects of her life - "...owning my desires is a complicated dance to keep myself safe.". The author has opened my eyes to Liv's damage and determination to survive and succeed, softening and flipping my thoughts with this vivid, emotional story - I guess I love and hate her too! Liv's desires range in scale and consequence but they are shown clearly, beautifully, openly here.

I found her need to manage mens' expectations quite scary. The sense of entitlement so many felt because of a smile or casual touch, let alone a night together, is the bedrock and causality of her personality and a reflection more on society than her personally. Her reaction to the Emperor here and her actions in The Blood-born Dragon paint an incredibly strong picture of her bravery and love, so maybe less hate from me after all.

If you love feminist stories, redemption arcs and a whole lot of theatre then Liv and her boldly compelling story is for you.

I never liked Liv in the other Everlands books. From Desta’s perspective, she reminded me of my ex: selfish, dishonest, unclear, unfaithful. I don’t think you have to be monogamous to be faithful, for the record. Those are not the same thing. Even within the context of non-monogamy, I believed Liv to be unfaithful. When I was supposed to come around and like her in the other books, I still didn’t.

I was nervous about this book because of that. I loved being inside Liv’s head in The Player and the Prince. She deals with so many things that women still deal with, such as attempting to be free and exercise bodily autonomy in a society that would rather she didn’t. Yes, feminine rage! Show me all of it. In the other books Liv’s constant playing seemed manipulative, but when you could hear her internal monologue, it seemed way more strategic. I really grew to appreciate Liv as a character. I trusted Rycroft as an author, that she would make me at least feel sympathy for Liv, and she succeeded completely.

This book is drama. It’s intrigue. There’s plans and there’s coping with challenges. And feminine rage.

You do have to have read other books in the series to read this book. I wouldn’t recommend starting here. And if you are an unrepentant Liv hater like me, I can’t overstate how much you should read this.

The spice: despite being queer myself, I very often don’t read sapphic books because I find the spice to be boring in most of them. Not this book. This was some spicy sapphic loving! Probably my favorite wlw scenes of all time.

I was given an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

TPATP is the best JC Rycroft novel I have read to date. Why, you ask? Because LIV!!! The Player and the Prince is the interesting and engaging look inside the often misunderstood beauty that is Liv. Liv is a survivor and a thriver in many senses of those words, but she's still trying to overcome the circumstances that set her life and fate to be something entirely too out of her hands.

The length of The Player and the Prince means nothing in terms of spice and intrigue. Seeing inside Liv's mind and feeling the events that preceded the Blood-Born Dragon from her POV changed my attitude on Liv entirely. It's easy to think she's a villain, but there's entirely more to Livinia Equitor than what meets the eye...just ask Elouise.

Check the trigger warnings and then check out TPATP.
MORE LIV PLEASE!!!!
