My Inherited House Might be Haunted

Rhett’s inheritance of the gorgeous Victorian house was expected. What was not expected:

Two familiars
A house full of ghosts
Magic powers?!
A new boyfriend, maybe, possibly, please and thank you.
Now if he could just figure out how to handle everything, life would be peachy.

My Inherited House Might be Haunted is the story of Rhett a guy who thinks he's human and Calix a witch. I loved these two so much. We also get a cute cat and dog plus some magical creatures. I love all AJ Sherwood's stories so much. The chemistry between the guys is perfect. I love the humor that is in the story. This is just a fun read. I would definitely recommend this book.

My Inherited House Might be Haunted is another fun read by A.J. Sherwood. The book has interesting characters, a fun story, and cute creatures, what more can you ask for? Overall it was a good read, but it was too short as I wanted more story to read. Highly recommended.

This started off strong, interesting. And then dissolved pretty quickly into something completely OTT and cringe at parts.

Mostly, once Rhett and Calix started dating and when Calix's mother came to help out with the ghosts. It's so awkward with the "sex up" bit, how the mom reacts/talks to them.
Mom ahemed. "Boys. Not now. You can fuck each other senseless later.
Rhett winked at me and then focused.

Calix is also a bit too try-hard when talking about himself to both his mother and sister and it isn't cute or funny. There were definitely some cute and funny parts here, though. I also really appreciated how there was no family drama, especially on Rhett's side where there often is when stepfamily is involved, let alone when there's a death in the family. It's handled well and they all communicate with each other on a regular basis which I thought was sweet. I liked what the aunt was doing for the ghosts, too. Loved the Brownies as well as the familiars.
Rhett's black cat was on the window bench, where she had one paw curled around the Brownie and was giving it a tongue bath. The Brownie did not look the least bit alarmed about this, but rather was leaning shamelessly into the cat with their eyes at half mast, like it was some kind of wet massage.

The familiars. It was definitely a different take, with them going to the vet. Normally, them being magical creatures, that isn't mentioned/needed. I liked how it showed good pet care with getting them vaccinated, microchipped and overall checked out. I also thought it was a good move on the author's part, to keep the vet visit brief as well as the terminology, especially since it seemed like some of the knowledge may be lacking. However, I also work in the field so am probably a bit harsher than should maybe warrant...? IV fluids go intravenous; therefore, you don't see humps on the back. The humps are from SQ (subcutaneous) fluids which are under the skin and slowly go down as the fluids are absorbed.

Overall, cute and fluffy piece that started off decent and then went missing.

"So three solid meals a day and its own place. Is that all? Oh, and can you tell gender?"
"Yes, that's all. And you can by asking."

I loved it very much. My only point of criticism?
I could have read so many more pages about Rhett, Calix and all of them. 114 pages were simply too short 🥲😂🥰❤️

I don't know how I feel about this one. It was cute, but everything was solved so easily there wasn't much tension or development when it came to the plot. Problems were solved as soon as they came up and the people needed to do so were all conveniently there to solve them. So while the story wasn't bad by any means, it was kind of bland for me.

Maybe for someone looking for a book with just sweet and no drama they might like it, but it was missing something for me

fluffy romance with witchy love and cute paranormal creatures

Rating: 3.5🌈

My Inherited House Might be Haunted by AJ Sherwood is a cute, no angst paranormal romance. It originally came about as a serialized story on the author’s Patreon site but has been updated and expanded.

The characters are adorable, there’s a inherited haunted house, along with ghosts (a family of ghosts which we never meet unfortunately), brownies, witches everywhere!

There’s so many interesting elements here pack together for a short story. Especially the familiars , a cat and puppy, that these characters never get fully developed into their elements. They are familiars in name only because they’re recognized by others as such. But do they talk or do things that we think of as being something familiars do? No. They do things that our cats and dogs do just as adorably mostly.

The romantic relationship is fast and the book length just doesn’t leave them much time for development of magical skills, new knowledge of how magic works, or other relationship areas. But the characters, Rhett and Calix and Calix’s family are so interesting that this story makes me wish for a sequel or expanded version.

Read My Inherited House Might be Haunted by AJ Sherwood for a delightful instant love paranormal tale!

After reading the author's other works ("How I stole the princess's white Knight and turned him to villainy"), I was desperate for similar crack stories.

This book wasn't bad at all, but definitely not comparable to the villainy series. I didn't really connect with the characters, and the story feels unfinished? But maybe there's a sequel in the works. Idk.

Definitely not what I was looking for rn, though

It was fluffy. It was short. It was forgettable.

Sorry, but I consume such a huge amount of books, this one just won't survive in my memory bank.
It was good enough, but stood out very little in any way, so my over-all rating can't go higher.

If you're looking for something short and sweet though: This is a fine quick-fix!

Sweet!

As usual, I find a great short story and wish it was bigger. Don't get me wrong - its perfectly complete and just right ( but it left me greedy for more). Thanks to AJ for a lovely morning!

Read for a group challenge week 3. It was short fluff with zero angst or issues. Rhett loses his family, inheriting a house that is haunted, a coven, knowledge that he is a witch, two familiars, cleaning staff and a boyfriend. HEA to the extreme.

This was…not a book? It felt like a half formed idea that never really went anywhere. The characters were carbon copies of most characters AJ Sherwood writes (I’m ready for some variety, there), the plot was…not really there? So much info dumping in the form of wiser characters telling Rhett things about himself (!) and his house and his aunt. A constant stream of tell tell tell with absolutely no show. And I didn’t feel any chemistry between the characters who were so similar (personality) that it got annoying fast. Also, the way this was written was very teeny, the language used felt (and I’m aware of the irony in using this word after complaining but) cringe.

I’m just really glad this was on KU because I’d have been really annoyed if I’d paid for this. The actual story did not live up to the blurb.

It's.... short

I liked the characters, but... this feels like a prequel. There really isn't any conflict. The two guys know and like each other, then just get together. There are ghosts in the house, which is sort of a problem, but the solution comes effortlessly. This is more a slice of life or fantasy than a story

I love Sherwood, but this one did absolutely nothing for me--for me, it's barely a 3, and I only finished it because it was so short, and it was masterful at lulling me to sleep at night. That this 2+ hour read took me 2 weeks to finish is telling.

I find it very frustrating that so many of my favorite authors are turning out silly fluff stories.

When you have too many books to choose from, naturally, you pick a novella that just came out today. Here's AJ Sherwood's "My Inherited House Might Be Haunted."

["Rhett’s inheritance of the gorgeous Victorian house was expected. What was not expected:

Two familiars
A house full of ghosts
Magic powers?!
A new boyfriend, maybe, possibly, please and thank you.
Now if he could just figure out how to handle everything, life would be peachy."]

And the official tags (because they're the freaking best): ["ghosts, multiracial romance, familiars, Insta Love, Haunted House, Magic Realism, Mythical Creatures, HEA, everyone wants a Brownie, all the magic, technomage, cat distribution system at work, oh look a puppy!, honestly the whole story is just fluff"]

Honestly, the whole story is just fluff. In perfect AJ Sherwood style. It was adorable and quirky and slightly insane, but sooooo sweet. There's so much heart and soul in her work. And just the right amount of spice. ;) Plus some magical beings that just want their people to be happy and cared for.

Beautiful old house, ghosts, magic, and romance. What more can we ask?

I already expected to love this book, because I have loved or at least really, really liked pretty much everything I've read by AJ Sherwood, as well as some of their collaborative works with other authors. I feel like Sherwood has the magic touch, so to speak. Quite appropriate with this particular book.
Without spoilers, I can say that this one was light-hearted, enjoyable, and left me with a happy smile. I can honestly say I give it a 10 of 10, will probably read again later. If you have read other books by AJ Sherwood and enjoyed them, you will enjoy this one. If you are new to AJ Sherwood's work, I cannot recommend it enough. Without gushing, anyway. Try this one, fellow readers, and see if I'm right for yourself.

This book is the equivalent of rainbow cotton candy, overly sweet with no real structure or plot. It was like reading the secret, want cat, cat shows up, want dog, cat gets dog for you, sad you aren’t a wizard don’t worry you secretly are one. The whole book seemed to operate on the premise that if there is anything tough in your life don’t worry just be shocked for the next 3 pages cuz you’ll get it. Honestly I thought maybe he had a magical luck ability but no he’s just got that much plot armor.
I thought maybe the sex would save it and at least we’d get some spice but living up to its cotton candy nature the moment that things started to get a little steamy it just dissolved into nothing.

So funny and so cute! Rhett inherits a house from his favorite aunt and quickly learns something isn’t quite normal about it. He spends his days fixing electronics in his little shop while daydreaming about the hunky shop owner next door, Calix. When Rhett find himself the new owner of a couple of strays, he enlists the help of Calix which leads to a date.

Rhett learns that not only is his house currently being occupied by s few dozen ghosts, but that his aunt was a witch and so is he! Calix helps him hone his magic while stoking the fire of their relationship.

Would love to read more about these two and their merry band of friends.

4/5 This is short, cozy, and super low angst. I read most of this when it was a Patreon serial but fell behind, and it was really nice to read the whole thing together in its final form. I really like Rhett and Calix, and it’s clear that they’ve got a lot of interest in one another.

It’s fun to see Rhett learn more about the magical world and how closely it intersects with his own life. Lucy and Myst are adorable, as is Pepper (and I would love if a Brownie wanted to take care of my house, lol).

I enjoyed learning more about what Ruth was up to and the legacy that lived on. I’m hoping we might get more eventually and learn more about technomages.

Really fun nice romance

I really enjoyed this book and I wanted more but appears to be a one shot / serial. Please author make this a series. The main characters were really interesting and loved Lucy, Myst and Pepper and her family. Want to know more about them and others in the town. Like to see Rhett Family visit, does Calix get a familiar, does Rhett also get the medium ability etc….couldn’t the author make it like a cozy mystery series and they could help with murder cases.

too funny

I need to start by saying I have loved every book by this author up to this point and this book does not disappoint. She manages the perfect blend of paranormal, urban fantasy, MM romance and humor. The humor supports the story without overpowering the other elements or being so ridiculous that it is distracting. I love her main couple. It is especially interesting since nearly all the other characters are female. I sincerely hope she revisits these characters even if it is only seasonal short stories.

I just want more! ❤️❤️❤️

Such a yummy magicy story with ghosties and other delights!
I was not ready for this book to end. I'm so glad I found it. I've been searching for deliciously witchy MM books for a while now, and My Inherited House Might be Haunted did not disappoint. I love it so much! Rhett's powers are so cool! And he's such a sweetheart. I love him and Calix and the found family that they're building.
I hope there is going to be more, and that this book is going to be available in audio! 🤞🏻

Rhett inherits a spooky old Victorian house from his beloved great-aunt. He doesn't expect the many, many surprises that come his way on moving day. He kept impressing me with his ability to just roll with it. I laughed and chucked my way through this fantastic book. From pets that just show up to insta love cuteness, this is a fluffy ball of magic, romance, friendly ghosts, finding your home and being happy. Rhett and Calix's story will be a reread favorite for sure!
