The final installment in the Men of the Wilds duet is coming.

Aurelia George was prepared to let the world believe she was dead. Tangled in the arms of her mountain men and bound only by the rules they make, the twice disgraced pop star had found her happily ever after.

Or so she thought.

The only thing surprising about learning her uncle wants her dead is realizing how eager she is to return the favor. Convincing her mountain men to leave their world behind and step into hers won’t be easy. Thorin is desperate to disappear again, Khalil is quietly drowning, and Zeke wants her gone.

For better or worse, this quartet of villains will have to leave their Eden.

And now that the tables have turned, Aurelia's the one they'll need to survive. But as she and the rest of the world are about to learn, you can take these men out of the wilds, but you can't take the wilds out of them.

Chrysalis – Book Two Review

Genre: Dark Romance (Reverse Harem)

I’m going to break this into two parts because my feelings about this book are very mixed.

Part One – Loved It

I really enjoyed the first half of this book.

Aurelia’s growth was everything. She went from a controlled R&B celebrity in book one to a full-on survivalist learning how to hunt, grow her own food, live off the grid, and build real confidence. Watching her step into her power and prepare to face her uncle, who controlled her life for so long, was so satisfying.

Then we have the guys:

Zeke — his character development was really interesting. Exploring his DID and how his love for Aurelia helped him understand the different parts of himself added depth. I also appreciated that their relationship wasn’t instant love.

Khalil — tough on the outside, but with a gentle love for Aurelia. He plays a big role in helping her grow stronger emotionally.

Thorin — always the one to challenge Aurelia, to push her, to say things exactly as they are. He frustrates her, but she needs that honesty.

The first half had everything action, character development, and yes intense spice. It was engaging and hard to put down.

Part Two – Letdown

The second half is where the story lost me.

It felt like everything wrapped up too quickly and too easily.

The emotional conflicts didn’t feel fully resolved. The guys forgave Aurelia very quickly, and we didn’t really get those deeper conversations or emotional moments that should have come with that. There were situations that felt like they were building toward something bigger especially between Aurelia and the guys but then they were just brushed over.

I wanted more emotional depth, more accountability, more real reactions.

Also, one big thing for me Aurelia is an R&B singer, but we never actually get her music. Not even lyrics. If you’re going to write a singer as a main character, that creative element should be part of the story. It would have added so much more connection and depth. We don't get to know the song she make for the guys that a big disappointment.

The second half felt rushed compared to how strong the first half was.

Verdict

Yes, this is dark romance intense, spicy, and emotionally charged at times.

But strong buildup needs a strong payoff, and for me, the storytelling didn’t fully deliver in the end. The resolution felt too easy for everything that was set up.

It had the potential to be amazing all the way through but the second Act didn’t match the strength of the first.

Well, I have a new book boyfriend going into my all-time top ten. I cannot put into words how much I love Zeke/Seth/Bane. Literally, whenever he switched, I was giggling and kicking my feet. Omg. The first time Bane came out and called her "Mine" I died. Literally dead. Decesased. Because from book one, we are told how scary and dangerous he is and how he was gonna hurt Aurelia, but no, that man was like, " She's mine. Then, when Seth reappeared, I cried. I just feel so maternal for them.

3.25/5 stars✨ (SPOILERS)

i had a fairly good time with the sequel to crucible. i can say it was entertaining, spicy (the cave switches 🤭🤭🤭), and action packed.

however, my biggest struggle was with the pacing... act one started off heated, and then it felt stuffed with filler (which was still fun and sexy), but act two was giving me whiplash.

there were many plot points that were poorly addressed, if addressed at all/brushed over (e.g. the BOMB about seth at the end??? khalil's reunion with his parents, thorin's entire recovery journey, the entirety of the conflict with her uncle)... them reconnecting was also a missed opportunity for emotional impact because they didn't have a single conversation about accountability, trust, or communication which have all been major themes in the duology... just immediate forgiveness and back to hunching! 😵‍💫

act two just overall missed the mark for me.

despite my valid criticisms, i still remained entertained! i enjoyed getting to read more about aurelia and her mountain men.

It’s official! These characters now live rent free in my head. I couldn’t imagine a better ending for this fast paced wild ride of a story. Massive props to BB Reid for writing such a delectable treat! Chrysalis is everything I’ve come to expect from this author - well written, solid plot, and brilliantly written characters who make me feel all feels!

Here’s what I loved:
The Horde. IYKYK
Aurelia is such a refreshing heroine. She gives these guys the business and is exactly who she wants to be. Simultaneously, the events of the book allow her to become exactly who she wants to be. The progression of each of the main characters was superbly fleshed out. Aurelia’s growth truly stands out.
The complexity of Zeth and Bane’s character is handled flawlessly. It’s obvious the author took great care when writing those scenes, particularly in how they relate to Aurelia, but moreso in how she responds to them. I was extremely IMPRESSED and completely entertained.
THE SMUT WAS SMUTTING. lol
And the cameos!!! I love them so very much! What a fantastic addition to an already amazing story.

This was one of my most anticipated 2026 reads. I’m thrilled to report it was a Top Read! Highly recommend this duet to fans of fairytale retellings, dark romance, and why choose romance!

*** ARC Review ***

Goldilocks had three bears, but Aurelia has 3 unyielding mountain men… and they ALL fit just right! As Aurelia navigates love, revenge and a now-sleeping Seth, Chrysalis unfolds with such intensity and emotional depth. B.B. delivered the perfect final installment and yet my mind and soul still remain in the cabin on Cold Peaks Mountain.

Along with the engaging plot twists, the fiery banter and character developments were hands down my favorite elements of this book.

“You want to kneel for me?” I whisper.
“All the time.”

Like come on if these men tell me to sit, let’s face it … I’m sat 😂 !! I loved witnessing Aurelia’s empowerment/resilience while staying true to the spoiled brat she is and challenging her mountain men at every turn. With a complex MMC such as Zeke, I truly admired the care in which B.B handled exploring trauma and writing each alter. Zeke, Seth and Bane are intricately woven yet possess very distinct mannerisms, emotions and behaviors. By further exploring the inner emotions and experiences of Thorin, Khalil, and Zeke/Seth/Bane, it’s impossible not to see just why Aurelia fell for them all. Chrysalis isn’t just a smutty retelling of a fairy tale - although I’m definitely NOT complaining 🤭, but a story of found family, healing and an epic love.

I can’t wait for you all to return to the Cold Peaks and see just how troublesome our Goldilocks has been 😏

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I first read Crucible when it was Indie and it was my first foray into why choose. BB Reid immediately made me a fan. I was so excited to pick up where we last left the Mountain Men and ooo it was so worth it!

One of my favorite aspects of BB Reid's writing is her character development. Specifically in this book, aurelia's growth and how she embraces who she is in part due to her devoted mountain men but also through survival skills. That being said, there were still moments where I was like okay here we go again with her and her choices, not listening to them.

I've always been a Thorin fan and this absolutely cemented it but Zeke, Seth, Zeth if you will stole my heart in this book. We get to explore so much more of his character.

And here's why I liked this book:
🖤The character development
🖤Unapologetic FMC
🖤Spice is Spicing!
🖤Zeth Forever and Bane too, maybe, I need to think more about this
🖤The Found Family aspects for all the characters
🖤The Villain Take Down

One thing I wish we would've seen more is the emotional crawl back after the third act break up. I expected to see some groveling or more resistance from some of the men but it felt like forgiveness was easily achieved and it was business as usual which was different than what I would've expected. I think I wanted more emotional payoff here the way I felt in the first book.

Otherwise though, it was a great end to this duology.

Thank you to BB Reid for this eARC and physical copy.

Book one of this duet was dark, entertaining, and introduces us to characters who are different and interesting. I honestly expected book 2 to be an extension of that with a similar plot just with Aurelia trying to convince the alters to share her with the other two. What I got was a limited run series of fluff and filler. Was it still hot? Yes! Did I love the characters? Yes. Was Aurelia a better version of herself in this and grow? Guess that depends on your personal preferences, for me, ehh. But was just about everything after the show down between the mains and the bad guys unnecessary and drawn out? Big time! If I could figure out a way to walk you through why I feel that way without spoilers I would. The pacing in this was slower and overall I’m not sure it compliments book one. However, as a reader who wanted to spend more time with these characters I still enjoyed it, I just didn’t love it and I think the subplots could have been handled better. What I did absolutely love, personally, is that Aurelia as a Black fmc felt like one and wasn’t white washed to be ambiguous to be more appealing to the authors largely white readership. As one of her Black readers that brought me a lot of joy. And though not to the same degree Kahlil was too. So I’m sad to see my time with these characters come to an end and if you find wandering around in the mountains “lost” mind your business!!

I will seriously never be over these mountain men and their goldilocks. This book pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I loved it so much. Unconventional and unhinged but I freaking loved all of them. Cannot wait to read more B.B. Reid. Her writing is exceptional.

I’m not gonna lie… this one just didn’t hit like the first book. Definitely not my favorite in this duology, and at times it felt way longer than it needed to be. Like okay, we get it—wrap it up 😅

BUT I will say, I still enjoyed seeing where their story went and how everything played out. The characters kept me invested even when the pacing had me side-eyeing a bit.

Overall, not my fave, but I still love this series and I’m glad I stuck it out.🎧

This is an AMAZING follow up from CRUCIBLE! The wait for this is VERY MUCH WORTH IT ! The way Aurelia & her men went THROUGH SOME THANGS IN THIS BOOK! As I was reading I was really going through some MOTIONS! Listen B.B. is going to write to where it gets you in your FEELINGS about the characters, and she DID NOT LET UP ON THAT IN THIS BOOK! CHRYSALIS picks up effortlessly where CRUCIBLE left off. That title of this book is MAJOR KEY. The character development with Aurelia, Khalil, Thor, and Zeke/Seth in this book is definitely a TIME to read. From start to finish, the ride to the end was well worth it. The ending left me VERY MUCH SATISFIED!!! This was an amazing wrap up to Men of the Wilds, and those men are going to be FOREVER wild over their Goldilocks!!!!!

Oh my mountain men!

Series get a 4.5⭐ This book gets 4. Love this series! But book 1 was definitely my fave.

Zeke really worked his way into my heart!! And Bane??? I mean the alters made this series for me. I love them!!

Thank you to the author for the ARC! I obviously but the Trad sprayed edge and the audio.

I will say, I loved these stories even more with the voices in my head over the audio. It's good just not how I heard Thorin, or the alters in my head. Zeke shockingly fit. Can't explain that. 🤣

This was absolutely insane. I was hooked honestly from Crucible. I put it down and immediately started this because I needed to know what happened next. I felt like there was a shoe in the air the whole time, in a good way, and every time i thought it had dropped, it hadn't but also...in a good way. Unfortunately I loved that no one got a moment of peace. Aurelia was fighting for her life the whole time but not always in a physical sense but just to have a life she dictated. Even if only she thought her idea/plan was good, she stuck to it and showed the guys that it potentially was good. She knows what her old life looked like and was like, they could have never made a plan that would fully worked without each other though. Everyone was needed in every step and that was the best part. There were many unexpected scenes as well, unexpected might not be the right word but scenes that i thought would go right that went left. Meeting Bane, hard left then took a big zag speed run. That was absolutely insane. I had to switch highlighting colors and go back and reread parts and read more carefully cause I realized something mid reading that the characters did too and I said.... wait a second... I love when that happens. I read for fun but also try to read with intention but it was some minuet things that surface level meant nothing, just a "throwaway line" but then I thought about it and said no let me put everything together. Next I was saying "oh ****"
I loved that we got to see the guys in Aurelia's territory. So much of the story has been on theirs and she finally flipped the script and they weren't floundering, cause they would do anything for her, but seeing them be like... this is what you do? What you go through? And then making sure to put her through the mattress (couch) still? Yeah that was everything.
The spice in this, top tier. Zeke & Seth, please collect your flowers. Khalil and Thorin, your flowers are also up here cause it was a group effort and we (Aurelia and I, more her than me) appreciated everything. Without giving away a plot point I will just say them in LA, specifically the cheeseburger scene had to be my favorite random small moment just cause it was absolute chaos then just so funny, not necessarily in a haha way but definitely in a tension breaking way for me.
As for the plot of the book... the cult people creeped me out. I know that was the point but they had me wanting to google how people even get into these situations because they started talking and I said 😳 umhm. Yep. I'm gonna go stand far away from yall, hope you get the help yall need... I can't say my thoughts on the uncle cause ill end up on a watch list 🥰

Thank you to bbreid for allowing me to ARC read!

Review of advance copy received from the author.

4 ⭐️

I barely closed my Kindle on Crucible before opening Chrysalis.
I needed answers.
Immediately.

More specifically:
I needed to know which alter woke up after that avalanche.

And I was thrilled that this book gives us a much deeper dive into Zeke/Seth/Bane.
If Crucible was Aurelia’s story—told through the lens of her wild men—Chrysalis belongs to Zeth.
And it works.

Book 1 was Goldilocks and her three bears fighting through their internal conflicts to have their love, Book 2 shifts the stakes. Now they’re fighting to keep it as the outside world starts closing in—especially in the form of Aurelia’s uncle and the undying specters of Zeke’s past.

I loved watching that evolution.

Aurelia grows into a stronger, more assured version of herself. The group dynamic deepens as they brace for their fragile little bubble to burst. And the slow, creeping danger of Bane rising closer to the surface?
So well done.

The buildup was excellent.
The tension held.
The standoff with Undying?
Brilliant.

Which is why the third act hit a little… off for me.

That sense of disconnect carried into the reconciliation. I genuinely thought I had missed something.
I flipped back.
Re-read.
Looked for the moment.
But there wasn’t one.

After everything they endured in Book 1 to build that relationship, I wanted that same feral, clawing energy in getting it back. Instead, the final stretch feels like it’s rushing toward a specific point in the timeline——and in doing so, it sacrifices some of the emotional payoff.

There are moments that feel like stalemates, followed by time jumps that skip over what could have been the most impactful parts of the story. I think using those time skips more intentionally—or letting Aurelia actually attempt (and fail) to take down her uncle before the reunion—would have made the final convergence feel much more earned.

That said, I was still completely invested.

The character work, the tension, the expansion of Zeke’s internal world, and the evolution of the group dynamic all kept me locked in.

TL;DR: A strong, character-driven sequel that deepens the emotional stakes and delivers on tension and buildup, but a rushed and underdeveloped final act kept it from hitting the same high as Crucible for me.

Title: Chrysalis
Author: B. B. Reid
Series: Men of the Wilds, 2

What to expect:
*Goldilocks retelling
*Why-choose relationship
*MMC with D.I.D

This book picks up immediately following the ending of Crucible, if you have not read the first title in this series then you will be lost in the story.

I loved this story, both books were incredible! I love books that include equal parts of both spice and action. This author did a fantastic job of including the alternate personalities of one of the main male characters, each were very well represented with different characteristics and interactions with the FMC and the other men in the relationship.

B. B. Reid is an incredible author and I highly recommend her books and this series!

Safety:
No OW/OM drama in the form of jealousy. On page assault between MMC’s and side characters. Mentions of religious cult lifestyle.

Format: Edelweiss ebook
Genre: Contemporary, Romance
Overall score:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice level:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
POV’s: Aurelia (FMC) & Thorin, Khalil, Zeke (MMC’s)

Warning: this may put you in a book hangover but we love that 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

A couple days have passed since I finished Chrysalis and I’m convinced the whole read was a fever dream. I don’t even want to start another book because I don’t want to forget these characters even a little 😭

I’ve read a handful of BB Reid’s books over the past few years and this is hands down my favorite writing of hers and in general one of the best duets I’ve read. She navigated some very difficult topics expertly too - Dissociative Identity Disorder AND a cult?? I know those two topics by themselves could’ve packed this book full!
Please please PLEASE read this book guys, you will not regret it. The pain, sacrifice, SUSPENSE, love and growth throughout this story brought me to tears. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where a main character almost died that many times either, does anyone know the final count?? 😂

Read your trigger warnings and the synopsis, but if I had to poorly explain why you should read this book:
1. There’s a ton of action for a romance and I loved that
2. Zeth.
3. I love a revenge subplot and there were TWO 👏🏻

And then of course we love:
🏔️ why choose
🏔️ forced proximity
🏔️ celebrity FMC
🏔️ MMC with DID
🏔️ dark Goldilocks retelling

*this is the second book in a duet, be sure to read crucible first!

As always, thank you endlessly to BB Reid for the ARC, and running one of the best influencer programs around 🫶🏻

*ARC REVIEW* This book had me in a chokehold 😩 I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved how it focused on Zeke and his alters, every single one of them stood out. Getting to know them more added such an interesting layer to the story. And the family vibes between Aurelia and her mountain men were everything. The way they protected and cared for each other was so heartwarming.

But one thing about the Wilds… you never know what’s coming or when it’s going to unfold. The suspense, the angst, moments filled with tension that’ll have you holding your breath… it was all there. They have to withstand trials that could change everything 😭. The action was amped up and the emotions ran even deeper in this one.

It was the perfect book to follow Crucible. I’m definitely going to miss these characters, but it gave me the closure I needed.
Overall, 10/10 highly recommend!!

i wish there were a scene where the four of them sat down and talked about their issues. otherwise the third act break up feels very forced. her reasoning is technically sound but since nothing really happens and they stalk her and then they fuck … like wtf? what happened between the four? did they forgive each other since she was pregnant and horny? she still left them when one of them was in a fucking coma!

i just want authors to do more research because it‘s a) not that easy to break someone‘s neck, and b) there is no such thing as alpha wolves.
It took me five minutes to learn about it! Normalize research into topics where we think that we know how it works but we want to make sure before writing a book.

ARC Review

i love these mountain men so much they’re so strong, broody, protective and down bad in love with aurelia. i love how we got to see aurelia take back her power and stand her ground especially to her uncle, also loved seeing how her first instinct was to protect her men first at any sign of trouble. we can definitely see the difference between zeke, seth and bane even though they’re versions of zeke emotions they’re all pretty different down to the mannerisms. seeing zeke and bane become wrapped around aurelia finger at fighting it at first was such a sight to see because they thought they wouldn’t be head over heals like thorin, khalil, seth but they were. i loved the pet names between everyone but my favorite for aurelia might be wolf because it embodies her strength, protectiveness, resilience.

🌶️🌶️🥵

This is the Duet to crucible so if you haven’t read that, start there!!

This story starts off right where she left us hanging in crucible😒😆
This book gives you more background, more action and more growth! Aurelia in Crucible is not the Aurelia you get this time around, she’s more confident, more free & more in love 😝.

This book had so much depth, I LOVE how through all the trauma, they all allowed themselves to let go and be there for one another no matter what.
Idk about yall but Khalil wasn’t my absolute fav in Crucible but man did he steal my heart in this book. I really understand why 3(or 5) is really better than one 😝

I LOVED the cameos, the crossover was amazing!!
Overall, this is a MUST READ! 10/10✨

This is book 2 of the Men of the Wilds duet and book 1 must be read first. Following a near death accident famous pop star Aurelia comes across a cabin and seeks shelter inside

“I’ll follow you to the ends of the earth, princess. I’ll live only for you. Even if you don’t want me to.”

I was frothing at the mouth to read this and was not disappointed! After devouring Crucible I just knew Chrysalis was going to be just as good. And was!

Aurelia and this dang wolf tho 🫩 like girluh pleeeease

I absolutely adored the relationships she has with each of the guys. They all love her in their own way but will do anything for her even at the risk of hurting themselves

Seth/Zeke/Bane done stressed me and Aurelia out well not so much Seth lol but those other 2 🥴 yea they’re lucky they’re sexy lmao

Also I just need to take a moment to appreciate these scenes
✨Khalil lifting a queen size mattress by himself 🥵
✨The letter 😩
✨The switcharoo in the cave 😜
✨ the titty hog reference🤭

I was entertained from book 1 page 1 to the last word in book 2. Thank you B.B. for giving us these scrumptious men

I have been waiting months to finally share this review, and it was worth the wait.

B.B. really gave us a full mountain adventure with this one. From the tension to the danger to the emotional stakes, the story felt bigger and more intense than the first book. I also loved that this installment felt much more character-driven. We really get to sit with this foursome and watch them fight for their love while facing some major hurdles.

Zeke/Seth has always been my favorite character, and seeing a deeper exploration of his dissociative identity disorder was fascinating. We get a full breadth of his personalities here, and I was absolutely obsessed with how that dynamic shaped the story. Gotta be honest I’m a Bane girl now.

This book delivers revenge, betrayal, passion, and some moments that had me gripping my Kindle.

The transformation from the wilds to the world of fame is never easy, but in this conclusion, the stakes reach a fever pitch. In Chrysalis, we follow Aurelia and her three feral men as they leave the isolation of the mountains to face the scrutiny of her reality as a pop star. This shift in dynamic tests their bonds and forces them to adapt in ways they never expected, proving that the most dangerous predators aren't always found in the woods.

After the intense survival of the first book, the story shifts gears as Aurelia takes the lead in navigating the group through the complexities of modern society. While the men must learn to suppress their primal instincts, Aurelia has to reconsile her love for them with the life she left behind. It is a journey of reclaiming power and finding a new kind of freedom in a world that wants to keep them in cages.

What I Loved
- The evolution of Zeke: The exploration of his character and his alters was handled with so much depth. It added a complex layer to the story that kept me completely invested in his journey.
- The Cave Scene: This was a standout moment for me. The tension and atmosphere were perfectly captured, making it one of the most memorable parts of the duology.
- Seamless Transition: The way the men adapted to civilization felt surprisingly believable. B.B. Reid managed to keep their core feral essence intact while making their integration into aurelia's world feel grounded.
- Character Growth: Seeing Aurelia step into her own strength and become the one guiding the men was a fantastic reversal of the dynamic from the first book.

Things for Consideration
- Slow Start: The beginning of the book felt a bit sluggish compared to the high stakes of the previous installment. It took some time for the momentum to really build up.
- Pacing Shift: While the ending was fast and full of action, it stood in stark contrast to the slower opening, which might feel a bit jarring for some readers.
- Intense Themes: As expected from this series, there are very dark elements and specific tropes that are not for everyone.
- Emotional Resolution: While the action was satisfying, I would have loved just a bit more time for the characters to process their emotional baggage after everything they went through.

Final Verdict and Recommendations
I am giving this book 4 stars, which is a half star more than the first part for me. The character work and the unique setting of the second half made it a very satisfying conculsion to the duology. I highly recommend this to readers who love drk why choose romance with a heavy focus on psychological depth and a fish out of water element.

📚 Chrysalis by B.B. Reid
Series: Men of the Wilds Book 2 (Final Book of Duet)
Publisher: Bloom

Genre: Dark romance | Why choose
Vibes: survival meets luxury, revenge arc, emotionally intense relationships, character driven chaos, found family

Some stories end in peace.

This one begins there… and then tears it all apart.

Aurelia thought she had escaped everything. The fame. The danger. The expectations. Hidden away in the mountains with the men who claimed her heart, she finally found something that felt like freedom.

Something that felt like forever.

Until the past comes calling.

And it wants her dead.

What makes this finale hit so hard:

🖤 A fierce FMC stepping into revenge instead of running
⛰️ Mountain men forced out of their sanctuary
🔥 A why choose dynamic built on loyalty, tension, and emotional depth
⚡ High stakes danger mixed with deeply personal conflict
✨ A character driven story that digs into every relationship

This book picks up right where Crucible leaves off, throwing you straight back into the chaos. And this time, the stakes feel even bigger.

Aurelia is no longer just surviving. She is ready to fight back.

But pulling her men into her world is not simple. Each of them is struggling in their own way:

Thorin wants to disappear again.
Khalil is quietly unraveling.
Zeke… doesn’t even want her there.

And yet, they are bound together whether they like it or not.

One of the standout elements in this book is the exploration of Zeke’s dissociative identity disorder. The different personalities are written with distinct voices, interactions, and emotional depth, adding another layer of complexity to an already intense story.

The relationships feel raw and real. Each man loves Aurelia differently, and watching those dynamics play out under pressure makes the emotional tension just as gripping as the external conflict.

And the moments??

⛰️ Strength and power in the smallest gestures
💔 Emotional scenes that hit out of nowhere
🔥 Tension that never fully lets up
⚡ Twists that keep you locked in

This book leans heavier into character development while still delivering action, betrayal, and passion. It feels bigger, more intense, and more emotionally consuming than book one.

If you love:

🖤 Why choose romance
⛰️ Survival to high stakes transition stories
🔥 Emotionally complex characters
⚡ Dark romance with depth

this duet is absolutely worth the ride.

💬 Are you more drawn to character driven dark romance or plot heavy chaos?
