My Star-Crossed Summer

Rate this book
WINNER of the 2026 Independent Publisher (IPPY) Award, Silver Medal in Romance**
From the award-winning author of One Sweet Holiday and The Almost Lovebirds comes a cozy second-chance romance about how love can be our truest compass.

Sometimes getting lost is the best way to find where you belong.

Victoria Griffin is desperate to find what lights her up. After walking away from her fiancé and an uninspiring job in real estate, she needs a fresh start. So when a friend offers her a job at an astronomy camp, Victoria accepts. She doesn't know anything about astronomy, or wrangling kids, but it’s not like she’s got anything left to lose…

The last person Noah Valentine expects to see at camp is his former best friend and the one who got away. Victoria is gorgeous, determined, and completely out of her depth—in an adorably clueless kind of way—and even without a telescope, he can see their chemistry burns as bright as ever. But he’s not about to break the camp’s no fraternization policy.

Working in the wilderness with the man who broke her heart is awkward. Then it’s embarrassing. Then it’s… amazing. But when Victoria gets a tempting offer from a dream real estate firm, she has to decide: is she brave enough to follow her guiding star, or will she settle for the road well-traveled?

My Star-Crossed Summer is an uplifting closed-door romance full of sizzling chemistry and witty banter. Perfect for fans of Sarah Adams and Katherine Center.

📌 I received an e-copy through netgalley, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.

---

Oh, this book was nice to read! Of course, I'm not a big fan of the second-chance trope, but here, I don't consider it as such since they weren't really together in the past, they just had feelings for each other, but nothing happened. When they wanted it to happen, the famous saying, "Right person, wrong time," came into play. Time passes, and they meet again, this time, it's their turn, of course, this is a little slow for their work, since they can't relate there, but they decide to wait. Overall, it was an uncomplicated, quick read with a little drama at the end, but it didn't detract from the story because it was predictable.

My Star-Crossed Summer is a cute romance that reminded me of a Hallmark movie. It was a quick, fun read that left me with all the warm fuzzies. Getting a second chance at romance with a soulmate is one of my favorite romance tropes, however, I found myself wishing for a little more depth. We got a lot of perspective into what each character was thinking, as this one is written in dual POV, but the witty banter, connection, and relationship growth between Victoria & Noah felt like it was severely lacking. The interactions they had seemed mostly focused on hashing out the past, rather than reconnecting and growing the current relationship, and the ending wrapped up a little too quickly for the amount of unresolved tension that had existed throughout the entire book.

The only thing that REALLY bothered me about this book was how the FMC talked about MMC's scent every single time she saw or was near him. Like, ok, we get it. He smells like cedar!!

Overall, if you're looking for a fun summer romance between two likable characters who are easy to root for, this book will hit for you!

Many thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book!

“For everyone who’s out there looking for the glimmers”... Lucy Day’s writing is so descriptive in the best way possible, when reading you feel as if you are there and can see the scene that she is describing. My Star-Crossed Summer is based at a summer camp with second chance romance and forced-proximity trope. If you want an easy to read sweet romance, you should read My Star-Crossed Summer.
Spoiler free quotes...that everyone should read
"No one ever grew from being comfortable."
"People are going to feel the way they feel, but don't let that undermine how you feel about yourself and your dreams."

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

My Star-Crossed Summer is a contemporary romance set at a science camp in North Carolina. After quitting her job and ending her engagement, FMC Victoria takes a camp counselor gig to get away from it all. When she arrives, she finds that her college best friend and former crush Noah is also working there for the next three weeks. She was prepared to be a fish out of water when it came to the wilderness, but she didn’t expect to come face-to-face with the man who broke her heart. Quickly, she learns that the feeling is mutual and there’s something lingering between them still.

Some aspects I loved:
🏕️ Camp setting
🏕️ Second chance love
🏕️ Friends to lovers
🏕️ Closed door
🏕️ Smart, funny kids
🏕️ Dual POV

Everyone has different things they enjoy in romance novels, so the things I didn’t like about this book shouldn’t deter you from picking it up. Simply, these were the areas I think needed more exploring or refinement:

I think this story would have benefitted a lot from a dual timeline in addition to the dual POV. Victoria and Noah’s chemistry was built over years of friendship and longing. We get a couple small glimpses into that, but it loses its potency when chapter after chapter they both tell themselves “don’t think of him/her that way.” This is where the middle of the book started running dry for me.

There were so many hints at what they wanted to do — be close to one another, explore their connection, etc — but there were fewer stolen moments than I expected. Especially with how immensely guilty Victoria felt for “breaking camp rules”, there was very little case for being disciplined, let alone fired. I love a closed door romance, but I felt this one was lacking a sense of tension or yearning.

Toward 80%, I started getting irritated by the characters not trusting themselves or each other to mean or do what they say. This came across as insecure in a way I didn’t believe they could quickly overcome by the end of the story.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book is a great summer (or wishing it was summer) read. I really enjoyed the summer camp setting, and the descriptions of the natural world around the camp were surprisingly vivid. This book is the second chance romance story of Noah and Victoria, who met years earlier in college, caught feelings, and then things ended badly and unresolved. Now they’ve both started working at an astronomy summer camp completely by chance.

What I liked:
- Victoria’s personal growth. The book begins with her shimmying down a tree in order to sneak out of her mother’s house, so I knew right away that this is a woman who has some unresolved issues. Throughout the book, Victoria is very contemplative in regard to her future and recognizing what she actually wants for herself and not just what her mother expects of her.
- The kids at camp. The interactions between the kids and between the kids and the camp staff were so believable and sweet. Even the kids who were more of a challenge had redeeming qualities.
- The humor! There were scenes that gave me a good laugh and I could really picture some of the chaotic moments. I’m not always a big fan of physical comedy in books, but it was written well here.
- Dual POV. I loved being able to see things from both Noah and Victoria’s points of view.

What I Didn’t Like:
- Most of what we see of Noah and Victoria’s emotional relationship is through reminiscing about the past. There’s definitely a lot of physical attraction between them in the present day, but I wish we got to see more of their emotional connection in the present too.
- There’s a huge emphasis on the fact that they cannot fraternize while they’re both working at the camp, and that conflict is never really resolved.

Overall this book is a fun and quick summer read, perfect for a “brain-off” reading day! I enjoyed it a lot and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a low stress, low spice romance novel.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book!

3.5!

My Star-Crossed Summer is a cozy, second-chance, closed-door romance set mainly in a summer camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Victoria Griffin is finds herself accepting a temporary counselor position at a youth's summer camp after burning out in a life that she wasn't passionate about. It is here that she finds out one of her co-counselors is a former crush / best friend from college, who she hasn't seen since their falling out many years ago. Summer camp takes them on a journey through self-discovery and forbidden chemistry as they confront the memories from their past.

Book Yays:
- Cozy Setting: 3 cheers for a cozy small-town camp setting in the mountains and the antics that come with it
- Witty banter: Enough interesting, light dialogue to keep the book moving
- Dual-POV: Nice to see both POV's, especially as they address their intertwined pasts and the tension they feel forced being together in tight quarters for the summer

Book Nays:
- Pace: There is a bit of redundancy in character patterns that drag the middle of the book out a bit before rushing the end
- Character development: There could have been a bit more depth to side characters like Sophie as well as more depth to Victoria's growth / exploration while growing her confidence
- Balance between past / current conflict: I loved that the conflicts facing the two character's romantic possibilities was multi-dimensional. However, I do think that the story could have benefitted from focusing a bit more on current conflicts than focusing on the past for a majority of the book

Overall though, this was a nice, enjoyable read!

Victoria Griffin has mastered the art of running; from relationships, from expectations, from anything that feels too permanent. After calling off her engagement and walking away from her job, she finds herself taking a short term position as a camp counsellor to get back on her feet.

The problem? Vic’s not exactly the outdoorsy type. The bigger problem? She arrives at camp and finds herself face to face with Noah, her former best friend that she kissed then ran away from. She hasn’t seen him since they kissed.

Vic and Noah’s unresolved past crackles with tension and simmering emotions, making every interaction electric. Watching Vic, clumsy and completely out of her element in the wilderness, stumble her way through nature was hilarious and relatable. But more than that, her journey to overcome her fear of the outdoors mirrors the way she slowly dismantles the emotional walls she built between herself and Noah. Vic has to confront her inner voice that criticizes her decisions. She is afraid of failure or of appearing like a failure. She is too harsh about herself. She needs to be more confident and don’t worry about what other people think about her, especially her mother.

This is a quick, enjoyable read that wraps summertime adventure and romance into one. With its perfect mix of heartfelt moments and playful energy, it offers a warm escape into a world of love, personal growth, and the great outdoors.

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this ARC novel in exchange for my honest review.

After living the life of what her perfectionist mother wants, Victoria had enough. She quit her successful real-estate job, and also broke up with her toxic ex- fiance. With her savings depleting fast, she needs a job. Good thing her friend came in with an offer of becoming a counselor at a summer camp. Without other choices, she accepts and her new co-counselor is her ex- bestfriend, and the guy she kissed in college, Noah.

Not gonna lie, the premise hits a bit close to home. I can't help but relate to Victoria very much. And it was such a nice ride being in her brain because I totally understand. What I really like about this book is the balance of personal growth and romance. As for Noah, he is amazing! So amazing, that he's too good to be true. He's definitely written as the ideal book boyfriend. If anything, I do appreciate that he's not flawless. I also liked his personal growth too.

Victoria and Noah's romance was honestly so refreshing to me. I love that their office romance is not your typical setting. And I honestly appreciate that they realize where they are and actually respects that they are around children. It's actually kind of cute because it has that feeling of having a crush that you see around and you can't do anything about. It's quite precious.

This was such a fun and entertaining read. And I appreciate the whole plot. It was so intriguing that I kind of want to read the first book in the series.

My Star-Crossed Summer is the fourth book in the Jasmine Falls Love Stories series but can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone as well.

Oh, how I loved this sweet romance! There's just something about a summer camp that will brings in all the nostalgia for me...having been the highlight of my summers all throughout my teen years. Throw a second chance romance and fate into the mix? Well, what's not to love about that!? Immediately, I was absolutely drawn into Victoria and Noah's story as these two former college best friends find themselves unexpectedly working at the same astronomy camp. The chemistry between them was absolutely fantastic, but their history and the strict no fraternization rule for camp employees made things more difficult for them. I loved seeing the glimpses into their history together and found myself rooting for them to find a way to make it all work. I loved those humorous mishaps that had me laughing out loud, but it was seeing how he looked after her and her growth throughout as she tried to find her place that really made me love this one. Definitely a must read!

My Star-Crossed Summer is a closed-door romance with kisses only. There was one very minor swear.

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the e-ARC of this title to read and review. I have several other Lucy Day books on my Kindle, including the rest of the Jasmine Falls Love Stories series standalones, but this is the first I've read so far. I'll definitely go back and read through the rest, because I like the author's writing style and this world that's been built for the characters. I really enjoyed that My Star-Crossed Summer was set at a summer camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which made for great atmosphere and led to great adventures. I liked getting to know the characters of Victoria and Noah and watch them find each other after reconnecting, but ultimately I felt like this story got really repetitive (in both the descriptions/story itself and the main plot points being driven home) and the overarching stakes were quite low - I do realize you could get in trouble for dating at work, but the "no dating" rules at their summer camp felt like they would be for teenage volunteers and not for fully grown working adults who could do the proper paperwork or whatever to disclose it to bosses etc, and it didn't lead to much yearning or passion, so it kept reading juvenile in spaces that didn't call for it. I wasn't swept up in their story at all, but I did enjoy it!

Lucy Day’s *My Star-Crossed Summer* is a relatable and heartfelt second-chance romance that highlights how sometimes you need to go back to where it all began to figure yourself out.

Victoria Griffin is a character you can't help but root for—she's got her flaws and is in a pretty rough spot after some big changes in her life. Her journey starts at a summer camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is totally out of her comfort zone. Things get interesting when she finds out her co-counselor is none other than Noah Valentine, the college guy who broke her heart.

Noah's the kind of guy you can’t help but swoon over—he’s charming without being cocky, and his way with the kids is such a nice balance to Victoria’s awkwardness. Their chemistry is fun to watch, especially with that “no-fraternizing” camp rule hanging over them.

At its heart, *My Star-Crossed Summer* is more than just a love story. It touches on growth, forgiveness, and the brave, exciting challenge of letting someone in while you’re still figuring out how to love yourself.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

This is a heartwarming, feel-good escape with just the right mix of humor, healing, and second-chance sparks. It's the perfect blend of small-town charm, emotional growth, and slow-burn chemistry—all wrapped up in a cozy, closed-door romance. Victoria is a relatable heroine trying to piece her life back together after a personal and professional implosion, and her fish-out-of-water journey at a summer camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming.

Noah Valentine is outdoorsy, effortlessly cool, and definitely the one that got away. Their reunion is equal parts awkward and electric, and good luck with the “we’re-just-co-workers” act. You're not fooling anyone!

With witty banter, lovable supporting characters, and a strong emotional core, this is an uplifting story about finding your footing and allowing yourself to be seen—and loved—for who you really are.

If you’re looking for a sweet romance with depth, charm, and a setting that makes you want to pack your bags for camp, this book will definitely satisfy!

DNF - i'm so tired of cheating in books that i pick up with no hint that it'll be there.

🔺obvious spoilers ahead 🔻

H/h were best friends in college, both had feelings for each other, kept dancing around and for some reason they stop talking and only meet 6/7 years later at a camp. in current timeline he keeps talking about how he was totally in love with her in college and that he wanted her so badly

but the reason for them to end was them kissing. well she kissed him and he reciprocated, and then told her that he's already got a gf. hence, the cheating. ow is the one he was newly dating in long distance, made plans with and he kept her hidden from h just because.

wdym he had feelings for h but was also in a relationship with ow ???? he wasn't in the least bit upset about breaking h's heart because he continues to date this ow, chooses her over h, goes on a trip with her, very happily posting pictures of them for h to see and he just kept enjoying his life with her until she dumped him. to me he is HUGE red flag if there ever was one so dnf it is

'My Star-Crossed Summer' is an easy, low-spice, contemporary romance novel - definite Sarah Adams vibes! Victoria and Noah's friendship is heartwarming and them working together at the youth camp provides a fun setting. I am grateful that the story doesn’t wait all the way until the end to clear the air between the two love interests. There's nothing explicit about the romance but it does flirt with the line of clean considering with how much the characters mention their desire to be with each other physically. Just something to keep in mind depending on your spice-tolerance. I have not read any other books from this series but it works well as a standalone.

Special thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

📖 Bookish Thoughts
This was a really cute second chance romance! Vic is deep in a life crisis—burned out, newly single, and not sure what’s next. She’s a perfectionist to her core and totally stuck in people-pleasing mode. So when she ends up working as a summer camp counselor and finds out her co-counselor is her old college crush? Yeah… awkward!!!

Noah was genuinely sweet, and I appreciated how patient and understanding he was with Vic. He really saw her, anxiety and all, and didn’t try to fix her—just met her where she was.

The ending was a little silly (Vic, please… communicate??), but the epilogue was super satisfying and made me smile.

🥾 What You Can Expect
• Forced proximity
• Second chance romance
• He falls first
• Closed-door
• Only one tent
• Workplace romance

Rating: 3.5 ⭐️

This was a slow burn but it really follows the characters in terms of really thinking things over before making a move. Victoria Griffin has mastered the art of running; from relationships, from expectations, from anything that feels too permanent. After calling off her engagement and walking away from her job, she finds herself taking a short term position as a camp counsellor to get back on her feet. Noah doesn't communicate his feelings clearly at least when they were younger. As the stars align this couple gets a chance to really let each other know how they feel but will they swing in the stars or fall in the creek with the reaction of the other. This is a nice romcom that will hit with those timid to dip their toes in the pool again. Many thanks to Netgalley, the author and publisher.

This is the first book I read in the Jasmine Falls Love Stories series, but it served perfectly well as a stand-alone (to the point that I didn't know it was part of a series until I posted my review to Goodreads). I think this is a really cute summer read, especially because it takes place at summer camp which will certainly bring back memories for many of us (both as campers or camp counselors). I'd say that if you enjoy friends to lovers and second chance romances, this was a good one featuring those two tropes. The entire cast of characters is really lovely so that made for a fun read -.I read this entire book with a smile on my face. Which is really all I ask for in a summer romance read!

This was a sweet book. Summer camp gives you all those nostalgic vibes - having your camp "boyfriend or girlfriend".
This was the 4th book in the Jasmine Falls Love Stories, and having not read the first 3 books, I can assure you that this can be read as a standalone book.
The two main characters: Noah and Victoria, had good chemistry throughout. The history of the two was sweet and helped the reader feel their connectedness. I found myself laughing several times throughout the plot. I did feel like there was a bit more to be desired but still wasn't bad. Just needed a little more of something for me.

I am thankful to be given the opportunity to read an ARC copy of this book. I loved the setting and premise. A lot of the setting is at summer camp with the main characters being counselors who had a past together once upon a time. I think summer camps might be one of my new favorite settings. I love second chance troupes too. Overall, this had all the elements of a sweet cozy romance. Some of the conflict between the characters was a bit annoying but not enough that I wanted to DNF. I haven’t read the first story on the series but from meeting the the characters in this story I’m adding it to my TBR.

This was a solid 4.5 stars for me, a great second chance romance. This story follows Noah and Victoria, college best friends with unrequited feelings who have a falling out, only to reunite out of pure chance years later. I found myself drawn to Victoria’s personality and inability to decide what she truly sees for herself in her life, to be truly happy. I found the setting descriptions extremely vivid, as though I was experiencing it myself. My only gripe I have with this story is that the ending felt a bit rushed, and could’ve been a bit shorter in my opinion. I’m excited to check out more of this series! Thank you NetGalley for the review copy.

I really liked this book! It was super easy to read, and I blew through it in a day. It was super catchy right from the first chapter. I liked that it showed both points of view as well. Both characters were written well and seemed consistent.

The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that it seemed to play a lot on a miscommunication trope that could have been solved by them just having a conversation, but Victoria refused.

Overall, it was a really good book that I would recommend, with a forewarning of the miscommunication that goes on throughout the book.

I had the absolute pleasure of getting my hands on a copy of My Star Crossed Summer—and let me just say, I was not ready.

For context, I don’t usually gravitate toward the friends-to-lovers trope, but this book completely wrecked me in the best way. We're talking fluff, tension, and ANGST (aka my favourite heh).

Lucy Day has a way with words that had me clutching my chest and blinking back tears many times throughout the book.

If you're into second-chance romances, cozy outdoor settings, and adorable camp counselor vibes, this book needs to be on your TBR.

Victoria and Noah’s story was such a beautiful one to read about!!
It’s a cute, second-chance, forbidden romance and I loved all of it! I loved all of Victoria’s self discoveries and reading about her journey and the hardships of finding herself felt very relatable.
I soaked up every word and was eager for the rest. I loved the premise of the summer camp, nature filled story and them finding each other again, and I feel like it was executed very well! I really enjoyed this book & recommend reading it!!

This book is a perfect fit for readers who love emotionally charged, slow-burn romances that simmer with witty banter and explore themes of self-discovery. The cozy, small-town setting provides a charming backdrop for the characters' journeys, creating a sense of intimacy and community that draws readers in. The combination of heartwarming moments, laugh-out-loud humor, and poignant introspection will resonate with fans of contemporary romance who appreciate a story that delves into the complexities of relationships and personal growth.

This was the perfect read for reigniting my belief in the goodness of people, thanks to the main characters, Noah and Victoria. I loved that Noah was a kindhearted, generous guy and Victoria was willing to show others her vulnerability and imperfections. I was rooting for both of them--how could you not?--when their interactions sparked with great energy, clever banter, and real chemistry. Their second chance romance set at a three-week camp for science nerds was all-around fun. Lucy Day does it again!

My Star-Crossed Summer by Lucy Day is a heartwarming second-chance romance set in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The story follows Victoria, a woman looking for a fresh start after a breakup and career setback, who finds herself co-counseling at a kids’ camp with her old college crush, Noah. Their sizzling chemistry and unresolved past create a slow-burn romance filled with emotional growth and self-discovery. With a picturesque setting and a relatable journey of healing, this sweet and uplifting story is perfect for fans of closed-door romances and second chances.

I've been waiting for this Jasmine Falls book because Victoria definitely deserved her HEA. But she got more than that — and I loved watching her grow into the person she was always meant to be ... not to mention reconnect with the absolutely swoon-worthy Noah Valentine. Best of all, it's set at a summer camp! If you've ever wondered what your camp counselors got up to when the songs around the campfire ended, this one's for you.

This was my first ever summer camp romance. It was surpsrisingly cozy. It made me want to go camping. The book was woodsy, with bonfires and a good summer romance. It was an easy read, and flowed well. Victoria and Noah's story was a second chance romance. After a kiss between the two going wrong, they suffer through a friendship break up. Years later, Victoria goes to work at a kids camp for the summer, and thats when she runs into Noah. It was a super cute read, with lots of funny moments.

Told from dual POV, this was a story of second chance love between camp counselors at a summer camp. Overall, the story was cute, but it started off slower and I had a hard time really getting into it. Miscommunication is a central theme throughout the book, and I often felt frustrated by the characters back and forth/their own insecurities. Although it wasn’t my favorite, it was a unique storyline. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC in return for my honest review.
