Why We Break

Rate this book
People say that there are no secrets in a small town. At one point in my life, I might have believed them. But now? Now, I know that isn’t true.

Seven years ago, I gave away my heart to a man who promised me forever. We spent a perfect summer in secret, falling for each other while working on Falling Oaks Farm–before life got in the way. And despite what I say or how much I pretend to hate him now, I’m not sure if I’ve ever gotten the pieces of myself that I handed him back.

Now, Will Thompson and I are forced to pretend that there was never anything between us. I already have my hands full between teaching high school science, coaching cheerleading, and keeping the farm running. I definitely don’t have time to think about my attraction to the football coach who once stole my heart.

I know a happily ever after isn’t in our future anymore, but I can’t help but feel like our past is catching up with us. And I don’t think I’m strong enough to let him walk away again.

#Review: *Why we break* - Hollie Lucky - ARC [18+]
4.5/5✨
3/5🌶️

A second chance romance which stole my attention, so I've applied for an ARC. Thanks to Hollie and Booked with Emily for this early copy!

Hannah has taken over the farm from her granpa, who wasn't in the best state, having some health issues. She will struggle a lot with keeping it on the floating line, but she will have some help from her best friends.

Will was once Hannah's best friend, but something had happened between them, a couple of years back, because now they are definitely enemies, all the town knowing about their loathing. Can Will get that second chance at love from Hannah and find out the reason why they split in the first place?

Usually, we have a meddling mom or grandma, this time it was Hannah's grandpa🤭. He was constantly throwing hints on how well she and Will fit together. He definitely knew something was up between them because the tension was sooo high. The pure love they experienced in they teenage years was still present in their hearts, only there was that little thing that still kept Hannah from going forward with her feelings.

It was so sweet to follow the love story from the past and see what happened exactly. I was so curious to find out how the love morphed into loathing, making them that well-known enemies duo in the small town. The actual reason they didn't worked out was a sensitive one, which could affect anyone.

This story was filled with so many mixed emotions. It put me through every single one of them, which I really liked. The past-present alternation was something which completed really well this story.

Love, Loathing, and Leroy the Pig

Dedication: For anyone who needs the reminder: you’re worthy of a full and beautiful life.

Hannah (FMC): 28 • HS Science Teacher & Cheerleading Coach • Owner of Falling Oaks Farm • Obsessed with Peach Margaritas, 90’s Country and Leroy 🐷• Loyal • Independent •

Rating: 🐖🐖🐖.🐮🐷 (3.75⭐️ rounded to 4⭐️)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️ (dirty talk, praise, 🐫, begging, 👅, fun on FaceTime, hand necklace, public play)
T/W: livestock death (natural causes) (on page), parental abandonment (referenced), parental custody battle (on page), infidelity (not MCs, referenced), blackmail (on page), alcohol consumption (on page), PCOS and Endometriosis Diagnosis (on page), insensitive medical professional (on page), infertility (referenced)

This was a cute, heartwarming read with plenty of angst, humor, and just enough spice to keep things interesting. She’s the cheer coach, he’s the football coach, and their shared hobby? Bickering. Endlessly. Pettily. But beneath all the snark and side-eye, their chemistry is as obvious as Leroy the pig’s very questionable escape tactics. (Seriously, this pig thinks he is a dog.🥰)

The dual timeline lets us see Hannah and Will fall in love then while clashing now, and watching them navigate the mess of unresolved feelings, farm animal chaos, and a very nosy town. Here’s the thing—I love a good enemies-to-lovers arc, but the reason they became enemies? A big ol’ misunderstanding. And I just wanted to shake them both and say, “TALK TO EACH OTHER!” That said, the emotional depth, the small-town charm, and the fire between them kept me hooked. Plus, the side characters (and animals) stole every scene.

If you like second chances, small-town antics, and farm animals who refuse to stay in their pens, you’ll enjoy this one—just be prepared to occasionally yell at your book.

Swoony Line:
“I spent the last seven years missing you, and I don’t plan to ever spend another day without you by my side.”

I received an ARC copy and wanted to leave an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I was fortunate to receive an ARC, and I’m so glad I did. This is my second ARC from this author, and I will happily continue reading their work.

The dual timeline, alternating between past and present, provided valuable insight into the friction between the main characters. Hannah’s journey was both difficult and inspiring—her resilience, especially in the face of personal struggles, resonated deeply with me as I reflected on my own medical experiences. Will, despite his initial anger, showed remarkable patience and understanding once he learned the full truth, making his character all the more compelling.

I flew through this book in a single day, finally able to dedicate the time it deserved. The writing flowed smoothly, making it an engaging and effortless read. I especially loved the farm setting and the unique, dog-like animals Hannah cared for—it added a special charm to the story. Additionally, seeing familiar characters from the author’s holiday book was a heartwarming surprise, bringing back fond memories.

This novel took me on an emotional journey—I laughed, teared up, and ultimately felt deeply satisfied with the ending. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

“I know we're playing with fire, but I can't find it in myself to care. If playing with fire means I get to have her back, I'll burn the whole fucking world down.”

Okay y’all… this book was so good! I loved the first book in this series and I already knew the tension between Hannah and Will was going to be good but this was goooood. Usually I hate the miscommunication trope but honestly this worked in this book with these characters so I didn’t mind. All I know is I want to make margarita Mondays a thing from now on. Hannah is such a strong FMC and is really relatable and Will…his protective side towards Hannah *Swoon*. If you read when it burns, be sure to check out this book!

Why We Break is the small town romance following Hannah and Will. They are a true second chance romance and we are graced with then & now timelines, showing us how Will and Hannah got to where they are in present day. When we first meet Will and Hannah in When It Burns, and their interactions are anything but friendly, rather one would think they have been long time enemies. As we go back 7 years in the past we see that Hannah and Will spent a summer falling in love before it all fell apart. As we see their relationship progress and them give into their feelings in present day, we see just why they fell apart long ago. This is a true miscommunication trope but in the best way. Hollie does a wonderful job of showing that timing is everything when it comes to Will and Hannah. Hannah needs the time and space to grieve and process things she has done alone, and Will has needed the time to figure out how to be a support system for the people he loves, including Hannah.

I loved seeing their story play out over the years and see them both fight their feelings, though Will is all in the second he gets his hands on Hannah again. Hannah takes a little time and patience before she breaks, revealing what she has been shouldering alone due to her fear of anyone who loves her leaving. Really seeing these two try to “hate” each other and bicker with one another was hilarious because you can see that deep down it is straight sexual tension at its finest. Also the mouth on Will, good lord it is down right dirty!

And while I love Will and Hannah, I love the found family that is developing with Caroline, Theo, Margaret and Seth. These are people who firmly believe family doesn’t have to be blood and that when it comes to family, you show up no questions asked.

Why We Break is fun, flirty and downright lovable! The characters are easy to love and the little ton of Springside will have you kicking your feet while laughing. If you love a good second chance romance with some tension, banter, and finding your timing for love then you will love “Why We Break”!

I’ve never read a high school football coach and teacher/cheerleading coach sports romance before so I was taken by surprise with how much I loved this book and these characters. I also loved that this is a second chance romance and discovering what ended things the first time kept me reading. I liked how even though they had challenging family lives in the past, they have a very supportive group of friends and some close family members as well in the present. Thank you to author Hollie Luckie and Booked with Rae Author Services for the chance to read this arc early for my honest review. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s books.

I’m so happy to have gotten to head back to Springside! I loved Hannah and Will through their banter and loved seeing them realize that after all this time their feelings were still strong. The mystery of why Hannah chose to end things years prior really makes you understand her decision more and brings so much emotion to their story! I absolutely loved the chaos of the farm. Leeroy and Ruby were adorable in their mischief! I love the found family and girl gang vibes we’ve gotten to experience with these characters and can’t wait to see where the next book takes us! 💖

ARC Review🏈

✨Why We Break by Hollie Luckie is the kind of second-chance romance that will have you swooning one minute and wanting to throw the book across the room the next (in the best way possible).😂

Set in a charming small town where secrets don’t stay buried for long,🤭this story follows Will and Hannah as they navigate heartbreak, unresolved feelings, and the struggle of pretending the past never happened. The chemistry? Off the charts.🔥The angst? Deliciously painful.😫 The small-town gossip? Chef’s kiss.🤌🏽

🫶🏽Will Thompson is the kind of hero who makes you feel everything—the love, the frustration, and the undeniable longing that comes with a second-chance romance. He’s charming, a little broody, and absolutely still in love, even if he won’t admit it.🤭 Hannah is strong-willed, independent, and doing everything she can to pretend like Will Thompson isn’t still under her skin.😅She’s sharp, stubborn, and the kind of character you root for!❤️‍🩹

💕I loved the emotional depth and slow-burn tension, but there were moments where I just wanted to lock these two in a room and force them to talk. Still, the payoff was worth every frustrating glance and unspoken word. And all the side characters were amazing additions to the story.❤️

⭐️If you love second chances, forced proximity, and a romance that feels all too real, this one’s for you!🙌🏽

Oh, I love a small town romance written by Hollie Luckie. Since her debut, I have absolutely loved the series and fallen in love with her characters. Especially Hannah and Will had my heart - I absolutely adored them and they were my favorite since book 1. This book was so adorable that I wanted to move to Springside and find myself a cowboy.

Hannah, our brave and hardworking girl, deserves the world. Despite drowning in bills and debts, caring about her grandfather's farm, and helping him find a new home, she deserves the biggest hug ever. She's the strongest person ever, but she doesn't like to ask for help - she doesn't want to be seen as weak. Despite dealing with all of this, she's also a cheerleading coach and absolutely incredible - she's an icon 🥹💗

I love Will so much. He's our head coach, who is back in Hannah's life and finds himself attracted to her again. He never stopped loving Hannah - Not after a summer together 7 years ago changed everything for him 🥹💗 He will do anything to win her back and show her that she deserves love and support - he's everything! 😭

I love the dual timeline of past and present, with glimpses of their younger selves, how they worked together on the farm, and how they fell in love with each other and dreamed about a future together 😭💗

This book talks about some heavy topics, but I really feel that Hollie has done an exceptional job of presenting these topics. I was so relieved when Hannah finally talked to Caroline and Margaret about everything that happened to her 7 years ago 🥺💗

I really hope we get Margaret and Seth's story because they truly deserve each other, and Theo's sister deserves to find her true love 💗

Thank you so much Hollie for the ARC 🫶🏻💗

First of all I want to thank Booked With Rae for giving me the opportunity to receive an ARC of this book.

If you’re looking for a second chance romance, Why we break is the perfect story. Hannah and Will share some history. Dated when they were teenagers but split up abruptly without a clear reason, apparently. Years later they’re working together but their rapport is fuelled by some vitriol (again apparently). Their angry banter, actually, hides deeper feelings. Even if they can’t stand each other, they are in love with each other. Their journey is not easy, there are some secrets between them.

While reading their story, you can feel and taste their desire for each other. They really care about each other but are incapable of showing it to the other. Day by day, it becomes impossible to stay away and they simply cave in with their love. It was really cute to eyewitness it, you can really sense how much they love each other and how they wanna stay together.

It was a very sweet reading, romantic and a bit spicy. I recommend it if you’re looking for all these things.

4.5 Stars!

I’m not sure what Hollie puts in these books but I eat it up every single time. I fell in love with Hannah as a side character in Hollie’s first book and her getting her own story just tickled me. This was exactly what I needed in a second chance romance between two MCs who now in the present supposedly “hate” each other. Because we all know that the hate is just tension building and boy, did it build.I loved seeing the banter between Hannah and Will and that even though they have such a tumultuous relationship in the present, their past history still had them gravitating towards each other. THE FLASHBACKS GOT ME. Seeing them meet and fall in love as younger adults, gosh. So swoony. But also the reason of their relationship breakdown gutted me. So thanks, Hollie for making me cry like a baby lol. The one thing that I appreciate the most about Hollie’s books is the found family and girl gang she created. You literally feel like you’re in the story too taking a seat at Margarita Mondays.

Spicy Tension, Farm Animals & Margarita Mondays? Yes, Please.

4.5 stars!

Hannah’s a cheer coach with sass, Will’s a football coach with brood, and they’ve been beefing since their secret summer fling seven years ago. Now they’re stuck in the same small town, throwing insults like confetti and pretending they don’t want to jump each other’s bones.

It’s angsty, spicy, and packed with found family vibes, dual timelines, and a pig named Leroy who thinks he’s a dog. Oh, and Margarita Mondays? Iconic.

Enemies to lovers? Check. Second-chance romance? Check. Farm animals who act like house pets? Double check. 4.5 stars and zero regrets.

When I tell you I LOVE a good storyline. When the MCs have a past and we get to see little glimpses of it. Hannah and Will have absolutely the best banter that we were able to see in book 1, but we never knew the backstory. Now. We. Do. And wow.

The cheer coach, teacher, and farm owner. The woman who is busy beyond belief, feels like nothing is ever going right, and has a very funny pet pig.

The football coach who will banter just as hard, but will always be there when she needs him.

This book was so good!!

A bit of backstory here lol, cause this is a wild ride but oh so in a good way. When we first meet our two main characters it was from seven summers ago and oh boy were those summers something super special because they fell in love while spending time together at Falling Oaks Farm, but one day Hannah just left without any reasoning and this left poor Will heartbroken. But fast-forward to now, Will and Hannah are again reunited but not in the way they first expected because low and behold, they now are co-workers at the same school back in the same town this all started from.
Will is the sexy football coach now and Hannah is the cheer coach. This whole working together thing is very much bringing back some old feelings for the couple but at the same time, it's also forcing them to play along. All while poor Hannah is juggling farm animals, drowning in debt, and holding a seven-year-old secret. So who’s to say what will happen…. Hehe, you might just have to read to find out more!!! But I will give you this, will their reunion be as messy as a pig’s pen or as smooth as the Springside Saint’s cheer routine?!?!

Personally, I think this was a super fun and loveable little read. It had me giggling at times and full on laughing out loud moments too! From the start, you fall in love with Hannah and her farm animals! Leroy the pig is hilarious and always out of his pen. The past and present timelines were freaking amazing. I loved getting to experience Will and Hannah just falling in love when they were younger. It has you cheering for their reunion even more. And again the farm animals getting into mischief mixed with the tension between Will and Hannah makes this one so hard to put down. The secrets that unfold are painful but the love this story holds is so heartwarming. Overall, it is a must and now I need a physical copy of the whole series… so RIP my wallet, lol!!!

4.5 stars, rounded up ✨

Thank you Hollie, for gifting me with an ARC, all thoughts expressed are my own.

My first visit to Springside, Alabama came with the Christmas novella, and I fell in love. Why We Break follows Hannah and Will, in their story of second chance romance in a small town.

One of my favorite plot tools that Hollie uses is a dual timeline; so we are able to experience Hannah and Will’s relationship the first time and now. I feel like the story was perfectly paced. As we learn more about what happened in the past, it directly relates to what is happening in the present. Despite their animosity, it’s clear that Will and Hannah have chemistry from the start. As the story evolves, and farm shenanigans ensue, the motives of Hannah and Will become more apparent. I loved the little things that Will would do to help Hannah, despite her not knowing or directly asking for help. Will is definitely an excellent friend and love interest!

I really connected with Hannah, as an endo girly. From flare ups, to diagnosis, and surgeries- it’s never what you expect it to be. But it also comes with the grief of how it impacts your ability to have a family. I feel like it is important to see yourself in romance novels, as someone who is worthy of an unconditional love no matter your circumstance.

Lastly, I loved the glimpses that we got into Hannah’s world. Between margarita Monday’s with her best friends, to Friday night football, and taking care of her farm. I felt like we got such a clear picture of what is important to her, and why she is the way she is. Found family is so important, and adorable farm animals make life even sweeter.

Hi. It's me. Lover of all thing Hollie Luckie. Listen I loved this book from the moment it started. I was so intrigued with Will and Hannah's story from book one that I just ate this entire thing up, cried a few tears, laughed a lot, and fell in love all over again.

Will Thompson is the head football coach at Springside, is an amazing friend, and loves to banter with our girl Hannah. Hannah is extremely hardworking, dedicated, and has such a big heart for those around her. These two impacted my entire soul. Their fire. Their passion. Their fierce love for one another was everything I could have wanted. I also just loved their banter.

Will and Hannah had a lot to unpack with their history. The emotional growth and opening up again with one another was beautiful to watch and raw because of the topics discussed. I loved their love story because of it.

I adore this series, and continue to adore these characters. I cannot wait for the next one in the series. I am already ready for more Springside.

‼️ PCOS TRIGGER WARNING ‼️
When ready this book I connected with Hannah in a way I wasn't expecting to. I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 19, and have been managing it for a little under 10 years now. Reading Hannah's story hit home in ways that made this story pack an emotional punch. I am very grateful that I did not have the same doctor experience as Hannah in this book. If anyone ever feels alone or is struggling with PCOS, my DMs are always always open to chat. I feel very fortunate to have had an amazing family doctor and OBGYN on my side since the beginning of my PCOS journey, and I know I'm very lucky for that to be the case. ❤️

“I realised there isn’t much I wouldn’t do for this girl.”

Overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice rating: 🌶️🌶️

Hannah, our strong minded and hard working girl, finds herself drowning in debt, bills and damages at her family farm after her grandfather needed medical assistance and a new home with support, so she finds herself alone. Until Will, who she has tried to forget since their younger years is back and ready to tear down her walls. And be insufferable while doing it. On top of being a cheer coach. She’s run off her feet.

Will, our head coach at the same school, is back in Hannah’s orbit and finds himself drawn to her again. Not that he ever stoped being in love wth her. Not after a summer together 7 years ago changed everything for him, until Hannah ended it unexpectedly… so he’s determined to win her back and show her she deserves love and support, even if she doesn’t want it.

I like the dual timeline from past and present, with glimpses into their younger selves, opening up to each other, working in the farm together, falling in love and even planning the future together. Until Hannah finds out some life altering news and ends the relationship.

Now they’re back in town, fighting their attraction, until they finally give in, Hannah doesn’t want to open back up again but Will is determined, showing her he is here. Their sexual chemistry HOT! Like Will has a mouth on him! So sexy. I like Hannah snarky quips and her sass alot.

I also, loved that this book discusses the struggles with learning about endometriosis and PCOS. Hope Hannah found out from an asshole doctor and how she had to deal with it on her own.

This book was a great read and a lot of fun! Thank you to Hollie Luckie and Booked with Rae for this ARC!

Gosh this was just the CUTEST story ever. This is my second book by this author and I swear their writing just feels like a GIANT HUG.

I have to say this is the first book I have read where both of the main characters both work at a high school and they both coach different sports. And with Hannah living on a farm — the chaos that ensues there is so much fun. I was literally giggling and kicking my feet, having the best time ever!

The story starts where we have Will and Hannah who are in the same circle of friends in this very small town but plot twist they loathe each other. But their journey started seven years prior, when Will worked on her family’s farm and they fell in love in secret. Now years later they are working at the same high school and are around each other all the time. After various instances where they are at the same place at the same time, the tension finally cracks for them and let me tell you—I was ready to stand and do a slow clap 👏🏻

With this being dual timeline romance, Hollie did such a great job giving us just enough details on what happened in the past to what currently Will and Hannah were going through. It honestly felt seamless and when we got to the part where we saw what ended their relationship the first time, I never felt more like a character. I would have done the same thing as Hannah and I get it. But Will is just a top tier man because a man like him is all we need. I also have to say the endometriosis and PCOS representation here was beautiful 🥹🫶🏻

Trust me when I tell you, this series is so much and I can’t wait to keep reading more from this author!

Seven Summers ago, Will and Hannah shared an amazing summer together on Falling Oaks Farm before Hannah left without an explanation leaving Will heartbroken.
Now Will and Hannah are both working back in town and working at Springside High School. He's the football coach and she coaches cheer. They are now forced to act as if that summer never happened. Hannah is juggling farm animals, drowning in debt, and holding a seven-year-old secret. Will their reunion be as messy as a pig’s pen or as smooth as the Springside Saint’s cheer routine?!?!

Why We Break was a fun and lovable read. It’s as cute as the book cover and loaded with laugh out loud moments. From the start, you fall in love with Hannah and her farm animals! Leroy the pig is hilarious and always out of his pen. The past and present timelines were amazing. I loved getting to experience Will and Hannah falling in love when they were younger. It has you cheering for their reunion even more. It gets good ya’ll, Hollie writes spice so well!
The farm animals getting into mischief mixed with the tension between Will and Hannah makes this one so hard to put down. The secrets that unfold are painful but the love this story holds is so heartwarming. Why We Break is a beautiful reminder that life is a wild ride but with love, laughter, and friendship anything is possible!

Huge thanks for Hollie for allowing me to read an ARC of Why We Break! This book is an absolute delight!

Why We Break was a fun and easy read. It had the best and funniest farm animals and Hannah and Will who I am glad finally got it together and “grew up” enough to be with each other. This is the epitome of a second change romance and worth the read if this is a go-to trope favorite. I will say that it felt a bit slow to get going and I was not always a fan of the banter since at times it seemed a bit muuuuch. I do think I only felt this way though because I knew they were older characters wanted them to be better with their words and communication. I do not even mind the miscommunication trope at times but this just seemed like mean banter. Overall I was glad that Will and Hannah were able to find the happiness that they once shared and could be together when the time was finally right. Also I wasn’t Margarita Mondays to be a real thing in my life!

Likes:
❤️ Falling Oaks Farm was literally CHAOS! In the best way! Ruby and Leroy made the best supporting actors in this book!
❤️ I really enjoyed both Hannah and Will having the flashbacks to their younger selves! I feel like I got to know them better and put me in a position to root for their happy ending!
❤️ The spice! 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Dislikes:
🙈 Snarkiness/insults to avoid communication
🙈 Older characters acting very childlike/immature at times
🙈 A bit too slow paced

A Few of the Many Tropes:
👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏽 Second Chance
⏰ Dual Timeline
🏘️ Small Town
💕 Frenemies to Lovers
🌶️ Good Girl
🐷🐐 Farm Chaos
🏈 📢 Head Football Coach x Cheer Coach

I don't have enough words to describe how much this book means to me. Seeing Hannah finally get a happy ending was fantastic! I loved getting to know her character and seeing how she grew and developed through her flashbacks.

"One thing about Hannah Scott--her life is anything but boring...Have I mentioned, life with Hannah is always a damn adventure." -- Three words: Leroy and Ruby.

Hollie really knew what she was doing when she wrote Will's character. *SWOON*
The tension during their story was epic and I loved getting each of their POVs to see both sides of it.

"I feel like a man obsessed."--We all are Will....with you.

Will and Hannah are both navigating life and their feelings as tensions grow and secrets are revealed.
Hannah is just trying to live her life and take care of the farm, however, everything else seems to be against her. Will is trying to get over the girl he lost, but that never really works out how we want it to.

"You are seen, you are heard, and there are always brighter days ahead."
This is my favorite quote from the book. Hannah is such a strong FMC and this meant so much to me to see her thrive despite all the pain in her life!

Get ready for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and straight up swoon! I literally cried because of how beautiful some of these scenes were. I'm so glad to have ARC read this book. I'm already excited for book three! I hope you all give this book all the love it deserves. Hollie, you did a spectacular job with these characters and the depth of their stories. You are a truly talented writer, and I can't wait to read even more from you!

Why We Break is a gem of a romance set in a small town where everyone knows everything—except the deepest feelings that have been buried for too long. Will and Hannah’s story is a true second chance romance, told through a dual timeline that takes us back and forth to reveal what tore them apart years ago and whether they can truly find their way back to each other.

Hannah and Will fell deeply in love one summer, only to see everything fall apart. When we meet them in the present, the tension is undeniable: sharp banter, lingering stares, and a past they can no longer ignore. The miscommunication trope is in full force here, but in the best way possible. Hollie Luckie masterfully shows how timing is everything in love. Hannah needed time to grieve and heal on her own, while Will had to learn what it truly means to be a steady presence for the people he loves.

Their chemistry is electric. Will is confident, relentless, and completely unfiltered (seriously, his mouth should come with a warning), while Hannah is guarded, afraid of letting people in only to lose them. Their journey is packed with tension, hilarious moments, and heart-wrenching emotions that will make you want to laugh, swoon, and maybe even yell at them to just talk things out. And let’s not forget the found family—Caroline, Theo, Margaret, and Seth bring so much warmth to the story, proving that family isn’t always about blood, but about the people who show up for you no matter what.
