So….I’ll be honest. This book was adorable and the couple are adorable and I do love a good sleep token tale, but there’s no substance really. No real character development and the only dialogue is “omg is this real I love you so much I’ll never let you go.” I found myself skimming most of the book because it was the same situation, inner thoughts and dialogue over and over. And the over use of “her breath hitched.”
Either way, it was a cute potato chip book and I did like the characters. But it just wasn’t for me.
Kudos to the author for creating a ST inspired novel that felt respectful. I do wish we would have gotten more buildup in the “dream world”, as I thought this being the premise we would have explored that more. I think that would have given the characters some background as their relationship felt superficial and rushed. Personally I felt like the dialogue was lacking and both characters seemed a bit flat. The stakes are low and there’s very little up and down emotionally through the story. I’m a sucker for an MMC with a tragic backstory, and though we’re told he’s experienced pain and darkness we’re never really given any indication as why, aside from general human suffering. The “courting” aspect of their relationship consisted of meager short exchanges online as the MMC tries to keep the FMC at a distance at first before he decides to go all in. All in all it’s a sweet story with a HEA and a quick read. 1/5 on the spice scale.
This story had so much unmet potential. It was beautifully written with such vivid imagery. The characters were likable and relatable. But it just fell flat. Very little character development and much less actual plot. Not to mention the redundancy. It's almost like the same thoughts and feelings were played on repeat. I wish the dream world was expanded on. I wish there was more of a dive into their past and the supposed trauma they both carried. It would have lent so much more depth to the story. But it ended up being a lot of fluff and just a puffy love story with no real angst or catalyst. And I think it could have definitely benefited from more spice. Yes, I do love my smut, but I believe it would have actually boosted the story in this instance. I do admire how truly it captured what ST represents and the feeling their music invokes. I just feel it could have been so much more
I picked up this book after seeing it in a Facebook group for Sleep Token. I was excited to read it because I love the band, especially as the author has talked about how much respect she has for them so I assumed a lot of work and time would go into it.
But honestly? The entire narrative seems to exist as a self-indulgent fantasy for the author. It's basically self-insert fanfic with a lifeless, predictable plot. I'm okay with just good characters and good vibes, usually, but this book had neither.
I don't know, I just know I did not like this book. Which sucks because I really, really wanted to. The prose is technically fine, but the story and the characters just don't do it for me.
Was this book written with Ai??? Genuinely so curious because it reads like a large language model writes (like chatgpt)? (Not accusing the author of doing that, I’m just saying it looks EERILY similar to how LLMs write)
Anyway, that thought aside, I didn’t like anything about this book.
The characters were flat. Story was flat. It just read like poorly written wattpad fanfiction to me?
Was almost a DNF but I pushed through to see if it got any better—it doesn’t. :( Was pretty disappointed I spent my money on this.
I felt it was a little fast paced but love the references to Sleep Token and Vessel is God group!! I felt like the smutty scenes could’ve been a bit lore smutty but that’s coming from a reader that’s into dark romance, so maybe my expectations are a little too high. I loved the rawness between Rowan and Noctis, especially that the smutty scenes were more centered around love making rather than super lustful, that’s something I truly do appreciate about how their relationship was portrayed.
I was excited for this book knowing it was inspired by ST.
Disappointed. It feels like a first draft not a finished product. Like you just need to get everything down until you can make each scene better.
There’s supposed to be depth to the characters, but we never get into it.
There’s a lot of repetitiveness. If I didn’t ever have to read the word otherworldly again, I’d be happy or the phrase “but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.”
Bought the book after seeing a post on Facebook about it. The author’s writing style is lovely and intriguing to say the least. The main character in the book, Rowan, is extremely relatable and lovable. The characters have wonderful depth and are so perfect for one another!
Great book. Not my normal genre but I did like the book. Finding out it was based loosely off one of my favorite bands is what brought me to read it. The writing was smooth and felt dreamy. My only complaint is the word reverence was used too many times for my taste.
It was simple, and a cliche story of a fan and a front man, HOWEVER, it was BEAUTIFUL! The writing was perfect and I never once stumbled over words. It made me tear up and made my heart swell! Great job! Beautiful offering!
Got to love the attempt. This was sort of like reading a teen’s diary about her fantasies. There wasn’t much development in way of plot or character but I do love someone putting themselves out there.
