Der besondere Wert dieser Gesamtgeschichte der Kreuzzüge liegt in einer Reihe von Gesichtspunkten und Interpretationen, welche bisherige Perspektiven nicht selten verändern. Dies gilt vor allem für den Kreuzzugsablaß. Ebenso sind die neueren Forschungsergebnisse zur inneren Struktur der Kreuzfahrerstaaten berücksichtigt. Da fast der ganze christliche Orbis an den Kreuzzügen Anteil nahm, war die ursprüngliche Idee allen möglichen Veränderungen ausgesetzt. Das Buch schildert die Verstrickung der Kreuzzugsbewegung in die europäische Politik - so etwa in die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Papst und Kaiser und zwischen den Königen von Frankreich und England - , ihre Rolle bei der Gestaltung der Beziehungen zwischen Byzanz und Europa sowie ihren Mißbrauch für eine expansive italienische und katalanische Handelspolitik. In der 10. Auflage setzt sich der Autor mit der seit 2000 zahlreich erschienenen Literatur auseinander und bringt das Buch damit auf den neuesten Stand der Forschung.

This was a text book for a class I took in college almost 20 years ago, but it's stayed on my shelves. Thick with history and mystery.

Everything they say it is and more. Not for beginners to history, nor those disinterested in economics. Can be dense but also swashbuckling. At the end of the first half the only truly interesting character Salahuddin dies, but as the end begins to sag you get Isabella and Saint Louis. It ends with a bang as the Mongol empire goes supernova. Imagine what it'd be like if written with the same expertise today, where awareness of man-made climate change in the crusade regions could be added as illustration too!

A great but very academic book on the Crusades. I read this for university and did struggle with some parts, but it was still an interesting read. I didn’t agree with all of the author’s arguments in the conclusion, mainly about what was a crusade and what wasn’t, but everyone has different opinions on that.

A very deep dive into the history of the crusades and the crusader states in the levante. a minor disappointment that this book doesn't include the crusades in pomerania ans Poland.
