The Labyrinth

Rate this book
Zack, Carly, Dan, and Sarah have never met, yet have something in common: they all possess a debilitating superhuman sense they can’t control. Sarah's renowned for being a deaf cellist, when in truth she uses her instrument as a shield against maddening noises like a fly a continent away. Dan can see the dust on Pluto, but can only see his hands through a haze of tears. (He’s in therapy.) Carly can smell everything to the point that cocaine is needed to dull the sense, and Zack can break down the ingredients in Col. Sanders’ secret KFC recipe, so he numbs his tongue by drinking - a lot. With the pain and isolation their crippling senses cause, all four haven given up on being normal - and the only thing that keeps them from madness is the hope that they’re not alone.

Their hope is justified when they become aware of each other during a mysterious event that causes them to briefly swap bodies. They set out to meet; however, something else wants to find them, too. A monster in the guise of a teenager that calls itself the Guardian and wants their abilities for itself.

When Dan inadvertently has a flashback to a previous life, they realize that they`re at the end of a roller coaster ride of multiple reincarnations spanning all of history - and that the Guardian has hunted them through each of their lives. To survive in the present, they must relive their brutal clashes with the monster to discover its weakness in the hope of making their next encounter with it the last.

I was lucky enough to get this book sent to me by the author. The characters were interesting and the description of them was great. The plot had a ton of twists and turns. Lots of shocking and exciting things happens. I don't want to say too much about it because i would hate to give away what happens in the book. How the characters connect was really well written and i just have to say a very imaginative story. I'm not sure if there will be another book but if there is i would definitely read it. A very good read.

I finished reading the Labyrinth by Dorian Zari last night and my mind is still trying to wrap itself around it. If this is Dorian’s debut novel, I am looking forward to more.

There is an unwritten rule in my home, if a book can grab me after the first 10 pages, I will make the commitment to not shelve it to “read later”. I finished this book in a matter of hours!

At first it was difficult to follow which character was doing the speaking/action, but that is part of what makes the book so interesting. It wasn't long before I was able to know which one it was, because I -knew- them, how they act, how they speak, how they think.

I am trying not to give away the story, but you will definitely feel emotions towards each of them… even if they aren't always correct.

The entire time I was reading, I thought, “this NEEDS to be made in to a movie”. I could see it playing out in my mind’s eye.

Great character development, a few red herrings, and an ending that will leave you wanting more. A fantastic suspenseful novel, with a supernatural flare.

Disclosure: I was given an epub of The Labyrinth by the author.

***I received the eBook free from the author in exchange for an honest review***

The beginning of the story is very promising: four people who have never met before, but inextricably linked, are chased by a monster, 'The Guardian', decided to kill them. The story captures the reader from the first pages, has a fast pace, there are plenty of twists and a bit of humor. The chapters are described in the first person from each of the characters, except for the 'Guardian'. I particularly appreciated the variety of items that can be found there: there is the fantasy, by the nature of the characters and the plot; but it's also a horror, the description of some scenes is quite strong. There is also a part of thriller and mystery, chapter after chapter the reader discovers what the big picture and the truth about the characters. I also loved the writing style, fluid and easy to follow.
I loved it and I think it was an enjoyable read.

Do you know why I gladly accept (almost) every review request from authors (our whomever)? Because there's a very, very strong possibility I wouldn't have picked up the book otherwise. This particular one was on my TBR-list, and who knows for how long it would have been there, had Dorin Zarioiu not emailed me! Review requests are like compelling recommendations to me. I would not say I feel obliged to perform and provide, but it is a great incentive.
So, thank you, Dorian, for providing me with a copy of your work. I will be honest.

There are so many different books out there with the je ne sais quoi that will wow you, each of them in a very different way.
The Labyrinth has definitely wowed me and I would really like to invite readers to step out of their comfort zone and explore new, unknown writers because you might be wowed by the talent that is out there and hasn't a name yet, too. Personally, I really hope to have the chance to read some more Dorian Zari!
The writing style was just my cup of tea: funny, eccentric and packed - yeah, I like when info is thrown at me; I also like being occasionally confused, which I was also here.
The story itself was unique and very well developed. I like supernatural, I like bloody and gory, I like when I do not get what it all is about until it's too late.
Great characters, each one calibrated to one another. They balance each other perfectly.

Four people - two couples, soulmates - with enhanced senses against a villain called The Guardian who chases them through many lifetimes.
What's there not to like? There's love, there are a ton of witty and funny remarks, there are tears, and there's death. Bloody, gory, violent death.
Marvelous first novel.

Author: Dorian Zari
Edition: Ebook

This copy was provided to me by the author.

I thought that first off it was extremely well written, it has an interesting storyline which is what got me wanting to read it in the first place, it has great charcters and setting. I finished this book I found myself still thinking about it, I found it a very enjoyable read and one that was hard to move away from.
There was some moments when I was slightly confused but it kept my mind working and kept my thoughts on the book, the pace throughout the whole novel is very good and it keeps your attention. The author is clearly very talented as the readers imagination and mind is kept hold of and you are kept wondering what will happen next. Even though there is a few storylines going at the same time, Dorian has done it in such a way that it all flows nicely together. There is moments at the beginning of the novel where it is alittle bit hard to work out which character is talking, however once you get used to the authors style of writing it is easier to work out who is talking at that time.
I absolutely loved reading this book and I am very grateful for the chance I was given to read it. If you like a book where it is hard to work out where the author is going to go with the storyline then this is a good book for you to read.

The author mailed me the ebook version in exchange for an honest review so here it is!:

The premise of this book seemed really original to me:four people with enhanced senses are being chased by a monster for unknown reasons. The story is fast paced,it's told through short chapters from the points of view of the different characters;the way the characters interact with their "powers" (and what they do to live with them without going crazy) is very well written. Another strong point of the book was the villain called "The Guardian": a monster disguised as a teenager with round glasses that can kill anyone he wants with a simple snap of his fingers.

The only negative aspect that I found on this novel is that the start is a little chaotic:it kept shifting between points of view, but once you get to know the characters it becomes a very entertaining read.

Mid way through the second chapter of this book I had to go back and check who exactly was its author. Had someone told me it was Stephen King I would have believed. In fact, had someone pulled me aside and told me in confidence that the author was indeed Stephen King, but that he was writing under a pseudonym to test whether the books he was currently selling were entirely on their merit and not merely because his name was attached to it, I would be prepared to believe that just as easily.
In all honesty this book was a good read, a real book you could say. It wasn’t too long so as to make it boring, or too short to leave one hanging, and it had all the right ingredients melded artistically. Decent plot, well developed and believable characters…they were all there. Easily worth the money I think.
The only problem I had was that I didn’t have a paperback copy, so I could read it wherever and whenever in the old fashioned way that I am accustomed. Then again maybe it was a good thing I didn’t, because I would have finished it in two days instead of two weeks and not get to savor it! I for one wouldn’t be surprised to see a movie being made based off of it. Looking forward to reading this author’s next work.

*Book source ~ A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Four strangers connected in some odd way have to figure out how to battle evil and win the day.

This is one strange story. I had a hard time figuring it out. Actually, I had a hard time figuring anything out and the switching POV is very unconventional. A lot of the time I was thrown into another head without warning. The plot is definitely interesting though, even if the execution is confusing. It was like stepping into someone’s head while they’re dreaming and trying to navigate through the events in progress. I totally don’t get the ending either. I did enjoy the characters. Especially Zack. His attitude and humor bumps this story up from a 2 to a 3 for me. While it is unquestionably creative, it just isn’t something I could completely wrap my head around. I blame my grey matter and not the author. Well, not totally. I do think the shifting POVs could be better done to avoid mass confusion. If you want a trippy paranormal horror tale, even if it stumbles a bit, then I recommend this one.

I absolutely loved this book. I have to add it to my best of 2015 shelf.

This is about four very unique individuals, Dan, Sarah, Carly, and Zach, who are trying to come together to defeat The Guardian. I won't go into detail about what it is about, as it is a book that just needs to be read. I would have to say that I could read this book again and I don't do that often.

This book held my attention throughout, as I had to keep finding out what was going to happen next.

This is a stellar debut novel from this author and I will look forward to reading more.

I was given a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review.

Totally Enthralled !!

This is one of those books that are tough to put down. From the very beginning it grabs you and refuses to let you go, even though at first it was a little confusing. That is the work of a skilled author, one who captivates you, weaves a web around you until he is done telling you his story.

He has a way to play with words that is highly desirable and makes it so much fun to read. Dorian runs multiple story line at the same time and somehow manages to make them flow very well with each other and eventually finds a way to make them all come together. There literally is no dull moment and after a very short period of time you feel intensly with the characters, feeling how they struggle to comprehend what is going on and maybe find out why their lifes have not been easy. It is very different from anything I have ever read and you should really read this, you won't regret it.

I received a free ecopy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this book. The characters and plot were incredibly interesting and captivating. I found myself constantly thinking about how and where the book would end up. I was consistently surprised at the twists and turns the plot took. More than once I was completely blown away. This book was going to get 4 stars until the ending. I didn't understand or like the ending at all. Maybe if I understood why it ended that way, I'd have liked it. I found that the name of one of the characters, a little girl, was typoed or changed a few times. I absolutely plan on rereading this book when I get a chance, maybe a reread will give me some clarity on the ending.

I really enjoyed this book! I'm sure I would have finished it in a day were it not for classes getting in the way. If you like suspenseful, thoughtful horror/sci-fi I recommend this book.

The character development was great, you really get a sense of who these people are. At times you get annoyed, even mad, at them; then they make you laugh. I really liked Zack, his humor, lightheartedness and vulgarity were a relief at times. Sarah and her general coldness toward people in general was one of my favorite things about her; because you got a sense that deep down hidden she actually cared vary deeply.

I also really liked the jumping from character to character, for me it kept the story engaging and intense at times. Though I can see how some people may not like that style of writing. I've also read some reviews regarding the gore of the book; that wasn't really an issue for me...maybe because I've read far worse things than the killings described here.

How I acquired it: emailed from the author asking for an honest review

I gave this book a fair chance, I did, but I just couldn't get past 25%. I thought the premise was interesting, but I guess I was expecting something different. It was more of a horror story and that's not my cup of tea. But besides that, I just didn't care for any of the characters. I could have gotten over the gore and violence if the characters gripped me. None of them made we want to stay to find out what would happen to them. When a minor character was murdered, I...didn't...care. And that's bad, because I usually do. I honestly found them to be cliched. The Guardian, the evil doer, was just cheesy and laughable to me. How was I suppose to root for the characters to take down this hell spawn when I rolled my eyes at their conversations?I'm sure I may be missing out on some epic battle when all four main characters get together, but I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm to find out.

The artwork in between chapters was beautiful though.

REVIEW:  THE LABYRINTH by Dorian Zari

I wish I could have read this book years ago! So smoothly-written, so subtle, and oh those characters! Mr. Zari takes urban fantasy, spins it in a whirlpool of classic cosmic thought, and makes the result likable, entertaining, and more importantly, believable. The story just cries out for a one-sitting reading. Can I confess? My favorite character was The Guardian!

I think this book is good. I don’t get many horror books that are really good. But if you are a Steven King fan, I think you would like this book. I think this author is very good. Maybe this author will start some mini-series on TV as well. I think he could do I movie with this book. I would go watch it. This book was very different and had lots of twists to it. * I was given this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

"The Labyrinth" is a strong debut novel by Dorian Zari that any fan of Stephen King should check out.

Zack, Carly, Dan, and Sarah all have senses that are either too good, or not good enough - a deaf cello player who plays to packed houses, a blind man who can see to the stars and paints pictures hung in galleries, a nose that can smell everything to the point that cocaine is needed to dull the sense, and a tongue that can break down the ingredients in Col. Sanders secret KFC recipe!

The villain is a nice young boy who happens to think he is in Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night" the music video. Really, dude - lose the sunglasses. Problem is - once you see what is behind the shades, you might wish that The Guardian left them on.

Past lives and star crossed lovers have waited millennia for just the right moment to take out their arch enemy - but was it really just fate that put them in the moment or was there something else pulling the puppet strings all along? What happens when you have finished the roller coaster ride of multiple reincarnations and find out that you are on your last one? What exactly is with the hourglass on the cover? Any this labyrinth is made of material that just usually isn't associated with your run of the mill carnie fun house maze.

And why does everything have to end when the alcoholic finally lands a beautiful stripper and goes straight? Maybe it is just crappy luck, or maybe that nice young boy in the sunglasses might know the answer - why don't you just go up and ask him? I am sure you are dying to know....

____________________

Zari must have some dark space in his head that sprung forth in the writing of this novel. A nice benefit of reading the book is that you can visit these dark spaces, close the book, and put it on a shelf in your basement if you are scared. Zari must have had to put it on paper to get the light shining in those spots again - and I am sure it was a much longer process...

The story reminded me in a way of Stephen King in the sense that Zari just drops The Guardian into the story and doesn't really go into detail about the how or why he is there. But, Zari leaves little doubt that The Guardian is a bad, bad man..... If you hire body guards and the company sent you The Guardian, you might want to ask for a refund for misrepresentation... LOL. I am not saying this is a distraction or a weakness at all - just a comparison that jumped to mind. Heck, if Stephen King can drop a dome around a town in (where else) Maine, offer no explanation, and just start killing characters off - why should anyone else get into the mundane backgrounds before starting the book's body count?

Zari has a few scenes that "blew my mind" (or head off). One made me literally stop and call my co-blogger and share with him what I just read. Let's just say that after reading this book, I can never think of Russian Roulette quite the same way again. Why use a gun, when there are so many other options that are available?

In the end, Zari lifts the veil and nicely wraps things up by explaining things for those in the audience who need that sort of thing. Me? I was too interested in The Guardian's modis operandi to really care, but the author did look out for the inquisitive souls that just had to know.

All in all, this was a strong and well thought-out, novel. For a few dollars, check out Dorian Zari's book and show your support for this talented Indie Author!

Most of us are not spontaneous. We are restricted by family, friends, the general public opinion. But sometimes, as unexpected to us as it is to others, we make spur-of-the-moment decisions - like trying some foreign cuisine a friend recommended just to discover we love it. And then there's old fashioned 'chance' like swerving into an alley we've walked past a thousand times only to find the most amazing little bakery nestled at the end of it.
This book was just like that - like a surprisingly delicious piece of lemon marine pie. All luscious and delightful, making you unable to let go until you've finished it all. I am so glad I held off on reading it until after my exams, because otherwise I would have surely failed.
Okay, so first I have to say: could someone please make “Zack in the Crack" happen? I would so adore it. I'm not much of a radio person, but I wouldn't miss a show if Zack was the DJ. I completely loved him. All that wit and sarcasm. I liked that Zari didn't shy away from innuendos, either, unafraid that they'll appear tacky or sexist. And they didn't - they were sexy and fun and added to the undeniable charm of the book.
In fact all four of our main characters added to that charm - individually and as a group. Like when you're building a puzzle and you start with the corner pieces, slowly building up the frame. The love those four have as couples and as a whole unit felt like that - like the frame from which we started to build the story, puzzle piece by puzzle piece, until we were looking at a perfect, complete picture.
What most surprised me was that I actually loved the love. Now that's a sentence. What I mean is, I usually stay away from books that go for the 'love at first sight' thing. I cringe at those, unwilling to accept the words 'I love you' until I've seen, in depth, why they matter. What makes them real. "The Labyrinth" could have easily ended up on that pile if it wasn't for the perfect symphony the characters created. For some reason I attribute to great plotting and astonishing character development, the connection between Zack and Carly, and Dan and Sarah felt almost palpable. It was right, it sucked you in like a vacuum, not letting go until you understood, saw beyond the material and plunged deep beyond the abyss of metaphysical.
Like a roller coaster this book swerved and twirled, putting a blindfold over your eyes, making it unable to predict the next move, the next challenge, the next deep plunge. Well written, fun, witty, charming. A true surprise - never going over the top, neither dragging on. A mix of the best of ingredients out there - original, eccentric and just crazy enough to leave you wanting more. Longing for a connection like the one shared among a true soul, a completeness that brought meaning where one couldn't see one. Or hear one, or taste one, or smell one. It delved deep into our souls to dig up insecurities and needs people rarely acknowledge, let alone are willing to talk about.
I want to thank Dorian Zari for writing this book, for giving me the opportunity to lose myself into the world he created, live with the characters he invented, laugh and cry, love and hate, live and die with them. I could give no greater compliment than this - I will be rereading this book again and again, every time I crave a bit of humor or a ray of hope to light up my day.

*I received the book through giveaways from the author*

Well THAT was an interesting story!
I would have liked to give it four and a half stars but oh well, four it is then.

Surprisingly deep and multilayered story, or should I say: mind blowing.
The story brings together four special people: Dan, Sarah, Zack and Carly. They have always been different from other people without knowing why. Even during their loneliest moments they somehow know that there are others like them - so even without truly realizing it, they are searching each other. Getting closer.
And that is the moment when the Guardian comes.

The Guardian is a memorable character, nightmarish actually. His typical outfit is a three-piece black suite with perfectly round, opaque sunglasses. He is probably like an androgynous pretty boy but smells like trouble and has only one purpose: catch the special four or die trying.

I really liked the Guardian - I mean as a character, not on a personal level. God, he was terrible of course. He was the perfect monster from every kid`s nightmare; only that he is still there when the kid wakes up.
The story is basically a mouse-cat-play between the special four and the Guardian. But even though this might seem like an easy description of the book, I can assure you that the story itself is not that easy.

At first it was quite confusing to read the story where four people`s lives were so much intertwined that there were even no line spacing between them. Later on I understood why the writing style was like that - it symbolised the connection between the four and connected the story into one - but it took some time to get used to it.
So in order to enjoy the story, the reader must stay focused. Especially when the past lives of Dan, Carly, Sarah and Zack are taken into the story. Wow, so much going on! And at the same time it was quite exciting that "the little circle" was expanding and giving the story so much bigger meaning.

I love the humor in this story, especially Zack is a hilarious character who made me smile very often. Dan is a sensitive guy and has a different sort of charisma which I learnt to admire and feel pity at the same time. Sarah is a little bit like him, sensitive and calm while Carly has more temperament and represents a stronger female. So two flames and two waters, very fitting.

Even though the story was quite exhausting with twists, deep meanings, different lives and escape plans it included really beautiful scenes that stayed with me. My top favorite is the one where Dan is staying in his apartment and seeing through floors, walls and ceilings. He sees through the universe and across the world and even though he sees all the beauty in it, he can not see the people and feels lonely.
It`s also a beautiful image that he can see the others (who are like him) only when it rains.

As a conclusion, this story has all sorts of qualities: it`s scary, funny, beautiful, thrilling, deep, surprising and complex as hell. It was nicely different from the other stories that I have read yet.
The ending was a bit confusing though. Without revealing too much I just say that I felt like this in the end: the same rat race AGAIN?

Oh well, I think I must be glad of it since I am human ;) (and no, you will not understand this if you have not read the book)

I can honestly say that the ending wasn't what I expected after first few chapters. Title of the book is right describtion of things happening inside. Every few pages there was something that managed to suprise me, and I stopped wondering "What's next?", just dived head first into story.
Zack with taste, Carly with smell, Dan not so blind as it seems, and Sarah with her amazing hearing... I can't even imagine being one on them and suffer from this.
What's worse - even living among peple they couldn't really live with them. They were lonely 'till they met each other. Their senses dampened, but then they had the Guardian on thier backs, who constantly tries to kill them. Or so it seems at first look.
Their memories of previous lives... If you think everything untill then is bad - there is worse coming. How would you feel knowing what happend in your earlier life? Yeah, they felt that too.
Then there is Ash and Lea... I didn't know what to make of them. I couldn't fit them with rest. It was bugging me, like there was something missing but I couldn't figure what. Everything cleared when Ash told Carly and Zack the truth - he was the Guardian.
If he wasn't truly one on them then Lea probably also was something different - that popped in my mind when he revaled himself. And I was right! I think that was the first time, that I guessed correctly what will happen next (and it's almost end of book!).
Lea as the Awakened is most likely the biggest suprsise (at least for me). If you actually think about this (and all she revals later) it makes perfect sense. Otherwise how seven year old girl could be born the same time as Dan & Co?
The fact that Guardian was on Earth just to prevent the four from meeting each other 'too early' gives me creeps. And that the Awakened expected them to do what they were programmed for...
Come to think about it she reminds me of Dumbledore in that aspect (too much Harry Potter fanfiction lately).
Just because they were expected to do something, the same way the Guardian was stopping them from meeting, didn't mean they were going to do this. Especially since they got the whole story from the Awakened. They were willing to forgot about their happiness so the 'soulless' people could live.
I enjoyed reading The Labyrinth very much. It's one the books that keeps you on your toes to the last word. Good work, Dorian!

Ok, let's start off by saying all the things that I did like about this book. First of all I liked Zack with his usually dark humor and best lines, I loved the description of each character's unusual sense and their flashbacks, I couldn't wait for them to experience one! I still thought this book was flawed though. I was thrilled by the Guardian but then he just disappeared to reappear in the memories of the character's past lives and in the end. I think that suspance is a great feature in horrors but here a huge chunk of the story was dedicated to each character's self-discovery and reliable truths were never given, not even to the reader. I think it would have been better to alternate what was happening to Zack, Carly, Sarah and Dan with glimpses of the Guardian. I mean, we got to truly know him within the last pages of the book and I think it has been a waste of the character. Not only that, I think that the Awakener should have been a more constant presence in the story given its importance because when she reappeared to Dan and he remembered her from a previous appearance I couldn't remember when did that happen. What I'm trying to say is that if what motivated each character was this huge Truth that is then explained in few lines at the end of the book you didn't get me by surprise because for the entire book I couldn't even picture a possible ending myself since I wasn't given all the means to understand it. It is like when you read certain Sherlock Holmes' stories, they're told by Watson's point of view, Holmes often disappeares to then come back at the end and to explain how he solved the case. We weren't there, we couldn't see all the hints so we are just passive to the deduction and accept it as it is. But those are usually short stories that are not meant to scare or surprise me but to make me realize what an amazing detective Holmes is while here a change of perspective wouldn't have been wrong.
Still, I enjoyed the ride. Probably all of the quotes from The Labyrinth you'll find on Goodreads were added by me and je regret nothing!
I want to thank the author for sending me the epub file of this book. Keep up with the good work Dorian! ;)

This was a pretty absorbing read. The pacing was slow to begin with, but after I’d read about a half of the book, things started happening very quickly and I felt it was harder to put down.
What I didn’t like so much: the pacing wasn’t perfect. I felt the first quarter drag terribly. It took a long while of determined reading to feel like I was getting anywhere, and when I did realise a little bit about what was going on, I felt it was time to move on. “All right I get it, what next?”
It was very wordy. That wasn’t always a bad thing, because most of it was thoroughly entertaining, but at times I just wanted it to get to the point. The Awakener for example. Honestly, woman, just skip every second word, pleeease. Some dialogue felt very forced – for example Dan’s conversation with his psychologist. I think I’d have beaten her over the head with my cane before answering her terribly obvious and condescending questions.
What I did like: lots! Almost everything else. Zari has a beautiful and engrossing writing style. His characters are solid and likeable. My pick is that Zach is Zari’s personal favourite – he has all the best lines, and clearly he had a lot of fun creating him and getting to know him. I found myself guiltily enjoying his character from the very start, and after that he just got better and better.
The creepy paranormal aspect is really quite fascinating. Zari presents his readers with the story of soul mates from a completely new perspective. And although this is a story about superhuman powers and about “chosen ones”, that aspect is new too. There were very few times during the book when I felt I knew where it was headed, and I really enjoyed the surprises.
I am happy to recommend this book to thriller or paranormal fans. Don’t read it if you’re a bit squeamish… there’s a bit of blood and gore, which is fairly central to the whole plot.

Another ratig: 8/10

WOW! Just WOW!! First chapter was one of the best first chapters I've ever read and after it I have to continue.
There isn't much slow or bad parts. The story is fast-pacing and thrilling. The more I read the more I want to know. I love author's sense of humor and I laught a lot. It isn't predictable I really didn't know what would happen next and that's what I really love on it. There was also some very original ideas and I am grateful for them because it's hard to make some (and well this story is about four people with some powers, I kow it doesn't sound original but it is). Another thing what I really like is how is story stuck together. How it jumped between characters and how it is connected. It could be confusing but I didn't have problem with that.
Characters are interesting even I don't think they are deep it doesn't matter because the story compensate it. At least they are realistic and I was able to feel their emotions (that is very important for me).
But, of course, there are some negative points. Well I didn't mind some crazy stuf which was sometimes too much crazy for me or some not so logic things (it didn't disturb me much). I have a big problem with ending which wasn't of my taste. I quite didn't unerstand what happened and I felt like it was rushed and too complicated. And that I didn't know what was the story about, why it is happening, why they have powers and etc., for the whole book quite disturb me too.
Overall? This book was awesome! I can't believe this is author's first book!! It was so thrilling that I couldn't stop reading (400 pages in four days!!)! And even I didn't like some things I am looking forward to author's next book.

This book was given to me by its author Dorian Zari. Thank you very much!!

PS: If they are some mistakes I am sorry. English isn't my native language so be patient.

*Free ebook version received from author in exchange for an honest review*

When I first saw this book on the list of giveaways the blurb made me think of the TV show Heroes. That was a show I really enjoyed so I was intrigued enough to read this. Sadly, the book did not live up to my expectations.

None of the characters really captured my imagination. In fact, I cannot think of one character in the story that I actually liked. Their conversations were mind numbing. They kept going back and forth between emotions similar to a manic depressive. There were times where the author seemed to be trying to instill some humor into the story but to me it was just annoying. It got to the point that I began rooting for the Guardian to actually win and kill all of the protagonists.

There were times where I felt the author did not know which type of story they were writing. It almost felt like a mash up of several genres including horror, suspense, supernatural thriller and comedy. I think it would have worked better had the focus been more limited.

The one thing that kept this from being a 2 star review was towards the end when it seemed to pick up the tension. However the finale and the epilogue ruined that, taking the story further than it should have gone.

Perhaps I'm being too critical. Maybe the combination of my expectations and having just read a book by one of my favorite authors caused me to enjoy this story less. Timing is very important in how one accepts or does not accept a story. Still, the story did not grab a hold of me. As evidenced by the 2 weeks it took me to read, it was a grinding task to finish the book.

I was contacted by the author with the offer of an e-version of this book after I signed up for it on the giveaway. I received the e-version within two days and finished it around work two days after that.

I really enjoyed how the first quarter of the book reads like a series of loosely related Steven King/Wild Cards short stories, then the threads intertwine enough to become a single cohesive novel. The concept that relates the four protagonists to the antagonist(s) is a very interesting one, but I can't help but feel as if the story could have been told with more efficiency.

I found myself little more than halfway through the book with a full understanding of the relationship between all the characters and the plot, but there were still almost 200 pages to go before the end. Those last pages were used to build up more characterization than I usually need and/or care about, so my opinion that it was nothing more than superfluous novel-wanking is my own. There was an emphasis on love and an explanation of the skewed relationships between humanity/religion/existentialism at the end that I felt was unnecessary. It was as if the author expected that his readers would need to have their hand held through the story, instead of having the inspired concept of his novel speak for itself. Perhaps he was looking to expand his fanbase by simplifying what would have otherwise been standard themes too complicated for the "common man" reader.

In conclusion: I liked the book. I really did. It was just too long and too simplified by the end.

*I couldn't quite decide on 3.5 or 4 stars but I settled on 4, simply because this book is so different to anything I've read before.

** The author contacted me and asked if I would be interested in recieving an e-version of the book - not that my review is in any way affected by this.

------

This book will surprise you. It certainly surprised me, all the way through.

I was not sure what I had expected, but the characters and the storyline was definitely different from any pictures I'd formed in my head. I thought it was fast paced and very different to the more typical magical novel, and I loved it. The characters and their flaws were very interesting and sometimes a bit overwhelming, but the book definitely managed to keep me invested and concerned. I also loved the writing in it. The way two characters' worlds/dialogue was sometimes combined was very interesting and I don't think I've ever read anything composed like that.
I also loved the fact that it was not your typical "heroic-boy/girl-discovers-new-world-and-defeats-the-enemy-easy-peasy" kind of story. The heroes are real anti-heroes and I imagine you'll question their sanity in quite a few places. It just adds to the novel's quite dark humor.
It's a mix of many genres and it contains both magic, horror and mystery elements. Right from the beginning the book is quite chaotic and as a reader you definitely need to be aware and invested in order to not miss anything. It's quite simply a page-turner.

I was emailed by the author requesting if I would be interested in reviewing his book provided that he email me the ebook version, and I gladly agreed.

First, I must say that if this is Dorian Zari's first book, he's going to do amazing things because the imagination used to create The Labyrinth was incredible. To help you all with making the decision to read or not to read this book.... you must like supernatural, eccentric, bloody and gory reads. If that's not your cup of tea, then I don't think you'll enjoy this read.

The Labyrinth is about 4 characters: Zack, Dan, Carly and Sarah. They have never met before, but they all have something in common which ignites in them the urge to find one another. In this journey they confront this evil being they come to call The Guardian. This book goes back and forth in time, and when I say time I'm referring to centuries. The Guardian has been chasing Zack, Dan, Carly and Sarah through many lifetimes in hopes to take from them what they all commonly have. Enhanced senses. And in this chase love is found, tears stream down faces, laughter is exchanged and people die in agony.

I'm going to be honest. When I started reading this book there was so much information thrown at you that I felt like it was all over the place. But once all the characters were introduced and I knew who they were I was completely captivated by the story.
