A series of mistakes led LX into a whirlwind of events and almost cost him his life.
After waking from a mysterious coma, he has no idea where he is, or who he is. Even the woman who calls herself Mellie is nothing but a stranger to him.
As he struggles with his new life on Earth, he discovers the government and the military are not the only ones who seek to control his power. If these others succeed, an entire different destiny could await humankind.
After she encountered strange lights in the sky, GG Atcheson became obsessed with extra-terrestrial life. She often daydreams about possible life in the universe. When she's not stargazing, she reads, or plays MMORPG on the computer. GG is a fighter and a cancer survivor.
This is the second book in the Legacy series by G G Atcheson. I couldn’t help myself – I jumped right into this book after finishing the first book, Fate. I just had to read more about my favorite alien, LX (Alex). Thankfully, I got to spend plenty of time with LX in this book as well… and he’s still my favorite alien.
This book was another good read, but I have to admit, not as “fun” as the first book. Destiny starts with LX waking up in the hands of the military again and missing his vampire girlfriend. Thankfully, he manages to escape… only to fall into the hands of vampires who are not nearly as nice as his girlfriend, and who happen to have big plans for him. Given that this book focuses more heavily on vampires and their dark side, it ended up being a darker book than the first.
I loved the additional insight into LX’s early life and culture as LX tried to solve a mystery somehow tying together his planet and Earth and I loved the surprising ending. As with the first book, LX (and anything relating to him) was my favorite part of this book.
While the book ended at an appropriate place, I really think a sequel could follow and I’d be interested in reading it!
I recommend this book to lovers of science fiction and vampire fiction. I do recommend reading Fate first, however, as there are some references to people and events from the first book that might be lost on the reader if this was the first book they read – not that this one couldn’t stand alone, but the experience would be richer if you read Fate first.
Legacy: Destiny picks up right after Legacy: Fate ends. Not quite like turning a page, but really close. If you haven’t read Fate, I STRONGLY recommend you do so now. Do not pass Go, do not collect your free money (unless it’s on the way to the library.) Destiny is a hard-hitting, fast paced story, and doesn’t let up throughout the body of the work. I ran into a few quibbles, but nothing that jolted me completely out of the story. I did have to file a few things on the “where did that come from?” shelf, and I’m hoping this is not the last book in this universe. It’d be fun to have some of those answers, and be able to read from start to finish. (I just found out G.G. Atcheson is releasing a new installment of this book as I’m writing the review, so my hope is being answered!)
World Building As I said, this book picks up where Legacy: Fate ends, or pretty close. It’s still based on Earth, so if you’re hoping to see some space travel, you’re going to have to wait (possibly forever. I’m not sure that will ever feature in this story if I’m seeing the story path properly.)There are a lot of new places – all well developed and carefully layered to make it an interesting exploration as the story moves through them – and a new top layer of politics in the tale. And, those politics are what really makes this book pop for me. Mind you, I’m not a big fan of politics – even the current stuff I watch out of morbid fascination, rather than a real fondness. When I realized where this book was heading, I debated if I wanted to continue on, and risk things being spoiled for me, or to stop while the delightful glow of a wonderful tale still glowed in my mind when I thought of the title. I’m ever so glad I didn’t stop. Even with my least favorite subject providing the bulk of the scenery, the story managed to come to life in my head, and the words danced across that mental screen.
Character Development G. G. continues to deliver in this installment of the Legacy series. Again, there were a few quibbles I ran into (more along the lines of “where did they come from” than “that doesn’t seem like so-and-so.”) The main cast continues to become more substantial, and even the new characters all have that extra “something” that makes them people, rather than just scenery to move around. One of the quibbles I did have, that kept coming back, I do want to point out. The lead in this whole thing – innocent as he is – seemed to wander into the naive territory for a while, which struck me as oddly out of character. Honor bound – I can understand. Honerable even makes sense. But there were a few times when that was taken a touch too far, and that made me feel as if LX had suddenly fallen out of character. A little later, there’s a couple of incidents that are on the other extreme, which caused me to blink a couple of times while I tried to figure out how the character I’d enjoyed up to now could be that way. These weren’t big issues, and the main story rolled over the bumps fairly quickly, which is part of why they stuck out for me as sharply as they did. Pacing OK, I’ve been raving about the Legacy series. However, there were a few points in the pacing that the absolutely delirious enjoyment almost collapsed for me. I’ll admit, the bulk of these instances had to do with scenes heavily laced with politics early on. The rest were because of a momentary skip in the timeline – I’d almost say that a piece of the story had been edited out or in, and while the story flowed smoothly into the scene, it didn’t always flow properly out of the scene.Outside of those few instances, the overall pace was well done, with a nice ebb and flow to the tension that kept the pages turning. I was hooked enough that I didn’t want to put the book down, and so was able to recover from the reading stumbles quickly, not quite realizing I’d hit a snag until I thought back on what I’d read.
First, let me say that I read this book because I loved the first book in the series. I might say that this is not precisely my preferred genre, but the wonderful Ms. Atcheson covers a lot of ground, and in the end my preferences were included. So clever and highly imaginative--in the first book, our hero, Alex, the alien wizard, who is suspiciously human in form, falls in love, and has, *ahem*, relations with, a hot female vampire. Who knew that was possible? Alright, it's a story, but still...in this book, our hero is actually turned into a vampire in a rather gruesome way, and as far as I'm aware, this is the first instance of a space alien being "turned". The first half of the book cruises along, but then, at almost exactly the midpoint, Ms. Atcheson lowers the boom, and it is a breathtaking race from there to the finish. It's a great twist; in retrospect, there are tips along the way, so you might see it coming, but you won't see how it's coming or where it's coming from. I won't say any more so as not to spoil it. Just do yourself a favor-get both of the books and read them in succession.
Returning to Alex after his previous cliffhanger, we find him hanging on more cliffs. He plumbs the depths of his own humanity while seeing the best and worst in the other peoples he meets. At times its hard to remember the shining example he was in book one. By the end though many mysteries are resolved and some of your faith might be rewarded.
A seamless melding of scifi and vampire genres filled with fantastic and surreal images, realistic characterization, and non-stop action.
For a strange visitor from another planet whose powers and abilities would give Clark Kent a run for his money, poor Alex (aka Zhendar) can't win for losing.
No sooner does he escape the clutches of the US military, Alex is immediately captured by the aptly named Destiny, queen of the earthly vampires. Needless to say, he meets with a whole new round of torments and is forced into more outlandish abuses of his planet’s neutrality creed.
A well-written, unique take on vampires and aliens filled with unpredictable twists, albeit twists that grow out of the characters and have been meticulously prepared for throughout the series.
Wonderful continuation of Alex’s story. This installment delves into the ‘Family Legacy’ which is rife with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. A great page-turner that kept me reading until all hours. Alex begins his story with little recollection of his past but slowly he regains both his memory and his power as he battles with his ‘destiny.’ Creative and well written. Highly Recommended!
Just finished reading this book and really enjoyed it. I am not big on vampire books but I could not put this one down after I started it. It's action packed right from the beginning this is a must read for you.
Destiny picks up soon after Legacy : Fate but Alex’s world has turned upside down. He is back in the hands of the government. He cannot remember anything that has happened to him since the battle and the crash. And more important - he is now a vampire. But being Alex he is a vampire like no other vampire. Still possessing his powers only now combined with the powers of a vampire, Alex is both more dangerous and more a cause for hope. He is also much closer to finding out why he is on Earth, and what Destiny has in store for him.
First off let me say that I am really intrigued by this series. It does a wonderful job of being both science fiction and urban fantasy, creating this unique genre that much like Alex is unlike anything that has come before. I love many of the characters, particularly Alex (although I think that I connected with him a little more in the first book - but I will get to that shortly). And without giving too much of the story away, I am really looking forward to where this story is going - what will enfold in the future books is anyone’s guess. Because one thing this series does is keep you guessing. Right when you think that you know where you are and what is going to happen, a new twist will be thrown in that takes the story in a completely new and unexpected journey that is thrilling, even when it’s a little unsettling.
As I mentioned previously I think that I connected a little more with Alex in the first book. This is not to say at all that I did not love him in this one - I just think that he was a little more sure of his own identity and place in the world in the first book. Something that made it a little easier to…well to want to root for him. The biggest reason that this is not the case, and I think my biggest critique of this book in general, is that everything changes every other chapter or so. Alex’s friends, enemies, family, and everything in between seem to change in unexpected ways that can be thrilling but also confusing. And since Alex is so confused and unsure, it cam really throw the reader. Again I am still in love with this series and cannot wait to read more I just spent much of this novel…..playing emotional catch-up.
This is book two in The Legacy series. Overall the series has a great new take on vampires. I love new and creative vampire stories and this is the first one I’ve ever read with vampires and aliens. Book one was good enough that I bought book two as soon as it was available.
The Legacy: Destiny is book two, and it is fantastic. This story is much darker than the first book in the series and is more paranormal/urban fantasy. I felt there was a lot of growth in this author’s writing style. It was obvious she was more comfortable delving in the darkest reaches of her imagination.
I started out worried that this book was going to spend too much time with LX under military control, but that is not where most of the story takes place. I don’t want to give away too much, but I will say the military is the least of LX’s troubles in this book. This book is a must read for those who love a darker paranormal tale. I highly recommend reading book one first or you could have trouble following what is going on.
In Destiny, we follow Alex through a twisting turn of events that lead him far from Mellie, his soul mate, to places deep and dark that will leave you praying and doubting that he might ever escape. Along the way, we are introduced to the Daxons, a different race who are puppy-like but in no way dogs, whom Alex takes under his wing and protects, as if they were his own children.
A vampire now, Alex soon finds himself captured and held by the Queen, Emmika, beautiful in name but not in acts. While under her control, the seemingly infallible Alex almost loses himself, and our hearts plummet to see him struggle so desperately to regain some sort of control over himself.
Like its predecessor, Fate, Destiny is a whirlwind ride, bursting full of surprising twists and turns, which captivates the reader. I am eager to read the next installment of this wonderfully imaginative series.
The second book in the Legacy Series, The author has continued to develop this story and builds intrigue with each chapter. This book is fantastic and although darker then the first book, which personally adds to the appeal, while still having those suspenseful moments that have you wondering where is the story leading... Alex back in military and vampiric control, and I will say that this is the least of Alex's problems (No spoilers). A wonderfully written story with plenty of action, suspense and unexpected twists.
Where will Alex end up, what is Alex's destiny?
Will wait with anticipation for another book in this fantastic series. I would recommend that you first read book # 1 The Legacy: Fate To experience the thrilling world created by Ms Atcheson.
An awesome story! A must read not only for fans of sci-fi but also for those who enjoy a darker paranormal/ urban fantasy story..
Three chapters in and I was clueless. There is no reintroduction of main characters or where we left off from book one. Had to get out the first book and review in order to make any sense of this. Alex the alien learns languages within two days but still can’t use plurals in his narratives (possessive vs contractions, etc). At least I think most of the narratives are his. It’s often hard to tell who is talking.
The editing is simply awful. Changing tenses in the same sentence. Wrong word choice. The come and go “drawl” of Mellie. Can’t blame all this on the alien. The storyline and concept are good but the delivery is lacking. There are some unexpected twists in the story that are good but you may have to pause to wrap your head around them. Some characters will have multiple names, try to keep it sorted out. There is some graphic sexual violence.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review for LoP.
I received this book from the author through Lovers of Paranormal in exchange for an honest review.
The Legacy series is different from other vampire novels because it throws extraterrestrial beings into the mix. Alex, or LX, is a vampire terrestrial hybrid with a hero complex who spends a great deal of time blinded by his arrogance. My problem with this installment is that it tried to accomplish too much in the first half of the book. There was so much going that it was a little overwhelming a times. However, everything pulled together once it started to find its pace, which is also when the story started to get interesting. This installment dives into the origins of vampires with a little Xhartan history thrown in. It was also nice to learn a little more about Alex's past. Will Alex fulfill his presumed destiny? Stay tuned to find out!
After reading Fate, there was no way I was going to be able to stop. I was far too invested in what will happen to LX to stop after one book. Destiny does not disappoint.
Without spoiling the story, let's just say that our author must have something of a sadistic streak when it comes to her treatment of LX. He is once again captured and at the mercy of said captors. Although this installment is much darker than the last, the same humor that peppered the last book can be found throughout this one as well.
I absolutely love the unique spin on the origin of vampires and recommend this book to anyone looking for something new and refreshing. Of course, if you haven't read Fate, do so first as the series is linear. I can't wait for the next installment.
