This reader focuses on the life of "Rosa," a young girl in a family of migrant workers. Children will learn important lessons about friendship, honesty, obedience, and the Best Friend of all. This is an Abeka Reading/Book Report book for grade 5. Set in the Yakima Valley in eastern Washington state, about a family of immigrants from Mexico.
Rosa is the daughter of Mexican migrant workers. This summer, they're picking apples in the Yakima Valley. I read this book many times growing up, and it made me look at my life in a different way. Growing up in rural Wisconsin, we have a lot of Hispanic workers on the farms, dairies, and cheese factories. There weren't too many of the younger generation in high school when I went there, but from all the little kids I played with on the bus, I'm guessing that will change within the decade. I just finished reading a memoir by the daughter of 19th-century Norwegian immigrants--each new wave of immigrants changes the nation, and they bring with them hard work, determination, fresh ideas and a love of their new country.
