In an overpopulated world teetering on the brink of collapse, the private company Fortune Limited claims to have the answer. Their public intent is noble: to reverse decades of environmental devastation and resource depletion. But in reality, they have far darker plans.
Decades later, the true cost of this Fortune is evident:
A brother fights for his family. A daughter fights for revenge. A loner fights for himself.
However unlikely their alliance, with time running out and Fortune's grip on society tightening, their mission becomes a desperate race against the clock. Will their combined skills and determination be enough to bring down a corporation that holds the world in its grasp?
There might be spoilers depending on how you interpret what I say. I don't mention what actually happens in the book though, but the disclaimer is there all the same.
Oh, I know it's a good book when every chapter plays out like a movie in my mind while I read it. When I can the characters' voices and it all just falls into place.
That's what happened from prologue to epilogue while reading Fortune Limited.
Before getting into it (without spoilers, of course), I am so thankful for the font of this book and I hope it continues to be so amazing as the series continues. The font made reading this book so easy, and as someone with a visual disability, this is something I always appreciate.
Fortune Limited gives Hunger Games without all the death and annihilation, well, not to the extent of The Hunger Games, Angels and Demons without the crypt and secret labs in Sweden. Was it Sweden? Well, you know what I mean.
As it was my first time really reading Sci-fi, with my usual book genre being either thriller, crime or romance, reading and enjoying this book was a happy surprise for me.
I found myself saying "One more chapter, then I'll go to bed." more times than I can count.
I can't wait for the second book because the plot definitely thickens and I am so glad that what I thought would happen to our MMC, what his family thought happened to him, is far more sinister than anyone could ever imagine. But now, that means that a new world is about to unfold and I am so excited for this.
I am so angry with our other MMC. I understand the reasons for what he did, but it did not have to go down like that. I worry about our FMC. I really hope she will be okay.
The American spelling annoyed me a bit as it was based in Cape Town, but loved the bits in chapter between chapter 31-35 when some of the chacters said "Ag." 🤣🤣
All in all, I ate this book up and I'm hungry for more.
P. S. Please keep the font and font size the same in the next book 🤗

I went into this book with a little background. It hit hard with what is going on in the world today, in my opinion. The characters were very well rounded and I really connected with Lance the most. That ending though!! I can’t wait for book 2!!
This was an easy read with a good set of characters, with a focus on family and how far you would go for your loved ones with some cool hacker heist operations thrown in to the mix.
I feel there are several spots that were left open-ended while I was reading - I am hoping they are foreshadowing's for events in the next book, I like spotting easter eggs.
I want to know what is actually happening on Luna!! I also would like to see more Dr Marlowe POVs - he is such a sassy king it is difficult to not like the character even though he is the main baddie.
As a South African, it was great to read a book set in Cape Town - I've physically been to some the places mentioned and I find that pretty cool.
sci-fi is not my typical go to read, but I will definitely be waiting for the sequel!
ARC read 🙌 this was such an intriguing, sci-fi/dystopian book. Set in futuristic South Africa, the world is struggling with overpopulation and Fortune Limited arises to the challenge, with deadly consequences. I loved all of the characters in this book, Grace was my favourite, her vibe and spunk were so good! The mission to save a brother, get revenge and bring down an empire had me on the edge of my seat, especially towards the end! The ending 🤯🤯🤯 we need a sequel asap! This book would be excellent as a movie 🎬 I thoroughly enjoyed this read and really looking forward to more works by A. R. Kingon-Daniels!
Fortune Limited by A. R. Kingon-Daniels is a tale of eugenics, the power of love and hope and the strength of the human will. Oh! BTW and super important... We have another South African author!!!
In a world riddled with overpopulation, Fortune Limited may be the answer. If you sign up with them, they will grant your heart's desire and look after your loved ones. But only for 10 years. After that, you must agree to... Expire.
But what happens after? And does this really solve the overpopulation problem? Three characters wish to answer this. Well, two honestly.
Grace wants revenge for her father's experience with FL. Lance is trying desperately to save his brother as his expiration date quickly approaches. Wolf.... Just needs to make sure he's okay. So when these guys all join forces, will their combined talents be enough to take on the big bad company? And what about the mysterious creator Dr Marlowe?
I really enjoyed the concept and think it brings up a lot of interesting conversations. I also liked the angle of how this corporation tends to target the vulnerable. I really enjoyed the main characters and found I was rooting for them. Especially Lance.
If I would to have a crit, it would be that there was instances of telling and not showing. The strongest parts of the book were when there was action and when characters could interact. I felt sometimes the narrative wanted to explain what the characters were thinking when their actions spoke enough.
Having said this, this is only the first book in an upcoming trilogy and with the cliffhanger this book ended on, I am incredibly excited to see what happens next! Daniels mentioned at a book launch how Dr Marlowe is featured more in the upcoming book so I am very intrigued!
Have you read Fortune Limited? If you're into dystopian, speculative fiction I would genuinely recommend!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy for an honest review! 3.42 stars out of 5
A dystopian world facing an overpopulation issue, Fortune Limited has the solution.
I went into this book with a small synopsis and I was pleasantly surprised with it! Now, this book had pleasantly surprised me when I read - in the first page - it was set in Cape Town. I was immediately hooked. The book had an interesting premise with endearing characters (and some menacing ones like Dr Marlow).
Things I loved: Characters and Banter: I liked the conversations between Lance and Grace because their energy honestly reminded me of Steve and Robin from Stranger Things - which - chef kiss, is always a 10/10 dynamic for me. I also loved Marc's character who is just trying to get through his Twilight Day man.
How "evil" Fortune Limited is: It's the little bureaucratic details like cremation, legally none of the Fortune Limited clientele were able to have a will and they gave away their right to the company among others. This honestly gave us the gravity of this organization in such little details even without exposition and lore drops.
Things I disliked: Filler words: I know this is a stylistic choice but there were a lot of filler words used such as "even" and "and". Telling not showing: There were a lot of instances where there was exposition following dialogue where it felt like the author was trying to clarify that "this is what I meant not this so we are on the same page". This isn't entirely a bad thing but I would have prefered it was used less.
This is a good read for anyone craving a dystopian world. While I had some stylistic issues and the book lost me in a few spots, sci-fi dystopian fans will likely devour it!
This gripping sci-fi dystopian novel delivers an inventive and chilling vision of a futuristic South Africa grappling with extreme overpopulation. In this strained world, a powerful corporation—Fortune Limited—steps in with promises of opportunity and stability, but their solutions come with deadly consequences.
After a tragic accident claims their father, Lance is left struggling to support his family. Desperate to help, his brother Marc signs a contract with Fortune Limited, believing it to be their only option. But once inside, Marc becomes trapped, and every attempt Lance makes to free him is met with resistance and secrecy. Refusing to give up, Lance turns to Grace—a talented hacker with her own reasons for wanting to expose the corporation. Together, they navigate layers of corruption, danger, and deception in a high-stakes effort to bring down Fortune Limited and save Marc.
With its vivid setting, tense pacing, and emotional stakes, this story stands out as an intriguing addition to the dystopian genre. It’s absolutely worth taking a chance on this new author, especially for readers who enjoy thought-provoking sci-fi with a human heart.
This book had me hooked from the beginning. Fortune Limited is a gripping dystopian novel that explores the dangers of corporate power in a world pushed to the brink by overpopulation and scarcity. The story plot immediately pulled me in, offering a future where one corporation claims to hold the key to humanity’s survival. The epilogue what was that I need book two please and I do agree it needs to be a movie .
An interesting take on "culling" the population. Theme: How far would you go for family? Intriguing characters set in futuristic South Africa. Absolutely love the local setting and South African names. An easy to follow Sci Fi read with plot twists that will keep you on your toes :)
I didn't finished, got about a third of the way through and lost the will, the story spends too much time not getting to the punch line while not developing a story that is interesting or novel
A gripping and unique story. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one! Love that it's set in South Africa with a few "South Africanisms" thrown in, too!
This book seems a bit to real. Am i living this now? This book had me thinking some real questions for a sci fi fiction novel. Very intriguing novel. Worth a look.
3.5 it left stuff to be desired. It was a neat premise and started out strong then kinda fizzled out like it didn't know where to go with the plot and needed to pivot to a new direction.
I really enjoyed this sci-fi, hacker, thriller work in so many ways. I felt like I was back in the world of really amazing tech thriller movies that I thoroughly enjoyed growing up! The characters all were compelling and wonderfully crafted, their differences in motivation really playing well off each other as this ragtag group staged their plans. You also really could see each motivating factor for each character clearly as well and that is a testament to some good writing! The world was also fascinating, with the overarching vision being curtailing overpopulation and the methods used to do this, and I found this to be incredibly unique and immediately interesting. I would have liked to see just a little more about the major corporation Fortune Unlimited, as there were a few times it sorta felt like simply a generic "big bad corporation" but ultimately, it was not hard at all to see why our characters were driven the way there were against it. And that ending? Whoa. It leaves you wanting more in the best way possible and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment!
Fortune Limited weaves a story set in a not-too-distant future against the backdrop of a different, more fast-paced, and restless Cape Town, South Africa.
As the population swells and resources shrink, one company—Fortune Limited—offers a solution. A chance to have it all: wealth, success, and every dream fulfilled. But nothing comes without a price.
For some, it’s an easy choice. For others, the cost is far too high. And for our protagonists—each connected to Fortune in the past, present, or future—something doesn’t sit right.
You are transported on this journey with each character, understanding what motivates and drives them. The story is so full of life that you will find yourself growing frustrated at their actions and reactions at times. This is the mark of a great book and a great author, in my opinion—the ability not only to transport you on the journey but to transform you in the process as well.
Fortune Limited is a slow burn that leaves you wanting more with each chapter, building a hunger that will have you pulling your hair out while waiting for the next instalment.
