This one was a nice read with vampires & shades and ghost-loving. We have Raven the vampire half and Johnny the ghost-shade. Johnny has been watching over the heroine since she was a child. Willie lives in the house that once belonged to Johnny Raven when Raven the vampire half makes an offer for the house. Johnny is the one who has a connection with Willie. The book was a little out there with binding rituals and insta-love but I kind of enjoyed it.

We had 3 main characters and I had a problem with each and every one of them.
Spoilers ahead!
Problem #1 - Willow (the heroine)
Willow was frustrating and confusing as hell:
She inherited a house from her grandma. Suddenly, a hot guy (Raven) wants to buy said house and offers her 2 million dollars for it. She says no. He raises it to 5 million, just like that. She acknowledges that wow, that's a lot of money for a tiny house like this, but doesn't question WHY he wants the fucking house.
Suddenly (everything happened suddenly, there wasn't much build up to anything), she sees a ghost that looks exactly like the mysterious hot guy. The ghost, Johnny, is scared of Raven and warns Willie to stay away from him because he's evil. She says not to worry since she also finds him creepy. Immediately after, Raven shows up again and Johnny tells Willie not to let him into the house or they're doomed.
Willie goes outside to intercept Raven but he's standing close to her, he's super hot and she just wants to kiss him. And she does. She also agrees to go on a date with him the next day, hinting that she'll have sex with him.
She's not under a spell.
She's not trying to keep him away from the house.
She's doesn't have ulterior motives like digging for information to solve the mystery.
She's just attracted to him.
Okay, so heroine is a fucking moron, at least we have the bad guy to spice things up... right?
Nope!
Problem #2 - Raven (the bad(?) guy)
Raven was a vampire but it wasn't clear what vampires were. This book is pre-Twilight/True Blood/TVD/every PNR book ever so I wanted to know more about what people considered to be a "vampire" back in 1995. It's still unclear - there was something about blood but he also had weird psychic links with animals and his soul was apparently a ghost? As in, a separate entity? I really don't know.
Anyway, he kept coming back to the house to hunt for his "Shade" but we're not told WHAT a Shade is or WHY he needs it. He just does. This is also where I questioned his "evil-ness". If he really wanted into the house, why didn't he just sneak in at night? It's never stated he can't enter because he's a vampire (and he has to be invited in). And if he did need an invitation, why didn't he just mind-control Willie (like he did before) to let him in? Since he wanted to buy the house from her, we can assume that the owner has control over a vamp's right to go in, so why didn't he just snap Willie in half, leave the house without an owner and have free reign to come and go as he pleased?
Also, he keeps wanting to rip Willie to pieces but then goes on and ooooon about how he didn't want to hurt her, only to have another scene where he's repulsed by her and itching to kill her again. He wasn't having problems with his conscience, nor was he falling in love with Willow, it was just a weird irregularity in the way he was written
Problem #3 - Johnny (the "hero")
Johnny is Raven's "Shade" (like a split soul, I think) and he's in love with Willow. They realise that he can only been seen through mirror and although he can touch objects, he is unable to touch people. Well, one night he does some weird shit with the mirrors that means he can actually touch Willow.
And he totally feels her up, IN HER SLEEP (he removes her clothes, starts touching her chest and between her legs). The scene shows him stopping and stepping back but later he says (many times!) that he made love to her "before". She's asleep the whole time.
So basically, sexual assault at best, rape at worst.
And that's your hero!

This is an older novel (copyright 1995), part of Harlequin's Temptation: Secret Fantasies series. But I wanted to read a few of these-type Harlequin novels with a supernatural twist in line with my current project, The Churchyard Watcher. I'm sorry the Nightwing cover isn't available. An excellent read, and this is not my usual genre. Lots of love, adventure and unique humor. Well worth the read.

I remember loving this book in 1995. However, in 2022, it’s quite Bonkers. I love a good bonkers book but this book took me forever to read. I cannot put my finger on why that is but a book this length usually takes me a few hours to read.
I’m going to give you my notes and you can decide whether or not you want to give it a go
1878 an Egyptian expedition. (Mummy style)
Opened a tomb -vampire that divides you from your soul (called a shade).
There’s a riddle
Must reunite with soul in a ritual
Despair attracts big cats?
Soul has appeared as pirate ghost to heroine her whole life. But only in her grandmas house. Can see him in mirror
Soul/shade is transparent but cannot walk through walls
Dr can heal with touch ?
Uses beach Sand as cat litter
Decides ghost is The one who went to Egypt buys a bunch of mirrors for ghost trap
Vampire can see emotions as colors and they snell like warm vanilla (all of them?)
So your souls is what gives you a reflection?
Has to unplug her Mac during a storm

What are rules of consent through mirrors
Vampires pee makes grass grow?
Pants that fit like banana skin?

I read this book a verylong time ago (in the late 1990's). It was a favourite back then and its still a favourite now. I wish I could find it as an ebook so I could have it on my ereader.
