The Motel: High Times in 90s Ibiza is a wild, vivid and thoroughly entertaining trip into one of club culture’s most legendary eras. Claire Manumission brings the world of Manumission to life with honesty, humour and plenty of jaw-dropping stories, capturing the freedom, excess and creative energy of 1990s Ibiza.
What makes the book especially compelling is Claire’s perspective. This isn’t simply a catalogue of famous names and outrageous parties; it’s the story of a woman who helped reshape nightlife and create a space where music, performance, sexuality and spectacle could collide. Beneath the glamour and hedonism is also a fascinating account of vision, hard work and the sheer audacity required to build something so influential.
The book has a wonderfully personal resonance for me. I met Claire and Mikke Manumission in London in 1998 through my friend Otter, who is mentioned in the book. Seeing that connection appear on the page made the experience of reading it feel particularly special, like opening a door back into a remarkable moment in time.
Claire’s memories are candid, funny and often unbelievable—but that is precisely the point. The Motel captures a cultural moment when nightlife seemed limitless and anything could happen behind the doors. A brilliant memoir for anyone who was there, wished they had been, or simply wants to understand why the 1990s club scene still casts such a long shadow.
