If you look at my book list, you will see that I don't give many five star ratings. I tend to reserve them for books like War and Peace and Little Women. But, Driftways, by New Zealand author Sarah Elwell absolutely deserves all the stars I can give it. This book is special. Each of the eighteen short stories is accompanied by one of Elwell's stunning original photographs. Also included is a suggested soundtrack for each story selection, making Driftways a complete multi-sensory reading experience. Elwell weaves a spell with her unique storytelling voice, drawing you into the lives and places of the people she has created. Her writing is lush, lyrical, and nuanced. Although Driftways is a book of short stories, I couldn't put it down. As soon as I finished one story, I wanted to immediately begin reading another. I defy you to pick a favorite--these stories will haunt you long after you've read them. 'Beautiful' seems too common a word to describe the experience she has created with Driftways, but in its truest, fullest sense, this book is, indeed, that. I expect we are going to see great things to come from this talented writer.
