I can’t really remember this but like… it wasn’t half bad! I liked the fmc - she kicked some ass, she had confidence, she had character. The men were fine, I truly had no feelings about them. The storyline was kinda nothingness, but I really liked the healthy female friendships, and wanted so much more of them. Special snowflake syndrome and classic trashy rh for sure, but some little twists, and addictive enough to keep me going!
This book started out really strong (starts out with a bang...literally), but then it fell into the usual academy why-choose formula for a little while. I need the guys to be developed a little bit further. I can tell the difference between Fade, Elijah, and Rapid, but they do blend a bit. They changed too quickly from being suspicious of Sinta to being obsessed with her. I was also a little disappointed that Bastien never made an appearance in this book (besides the beginning scenes at the dominatrix place).
I liked Sinta. No real concerns or strong feelings about her. I wish she spent a bit more time with the guys rather than all her time with the female friends that she made. However, that said, the female friendships were developed pretty well by the end of the book.
The world-building could be a bit better. It feels pretty surface level right now.
The writing in general is not the best, but I like the story.
Hoping the character development in all the harem members evens out a bit in the next book. A couple of them blend together. A couple of things I didn’t love but it rolled smoothly and I wanted to see what happened next.
✨turning the typical dominating male trope on its head: the book starts off with our FMC Sintra as a dominatrix (working to save money to get into the academy) with a first time client, there for his birthday on a date from his friends. Not something I normally be into but it was fun and spicy! 🌶️ ⛓️
✨pacing was good
✨I’m a sucker for a underdog to a top dog story
✨most of the guys are sweet and there’s a found fam vibe with close girlfriends for FMC
Notes: -Listed as MFMMMM, there’s a preexisting MM relationship w descriptive scenes. -wish there was less “mean girl” behavior as plot device -needs a bit more editing
✨dragon shifter, lion shifter, kraken, kitsune, unicorn, gargoyle, all types of fae
This is a new author so I was able to look past some of the smaller issues, excited for the next one!
This book is unbearable to read. First problem, the lack of proper formatting. Why no paragraph indents? Or even spaces between the paragraphs? Some chapters don't even get their own page break, while some other chapters are double spaced. This is a mess. It's like the author never read a book before and didn't know how to format things correctly.
I stopped reading on page 111 (kindle edition) and at that point, I reported over ninety errors. The author decided to make up their own punctuation, grammar and syntax rules. Reading the 111 pages felt like stepping into the wild west of grammar. Let's establish some basic rules of the written word: 1. Ellipses are three dots only; not the five-eleven dots used in this manuscript 2. Hyphens are not a substitute for commas or semicolons. 3. Not every piece of dialogue should have a statement after it. "I asked," "I said," "she purred" were overused and just stunted the writing 4. Any number under 100 is typed out. Example: six and not 6. There are exceptions to this rule, but none of the exceptions were in this book.
The writing lacked complexity, depth, emotions and grace. There is no polite way to say this: the writing was atrocious. There was an interesting story in there somewhere, but couldn't get past the stilted and stunted prose. If I was told this book was written by someone in the eighth grade, I would believe it. On the flip side, I would laugh in someone's face if they said this book was published. This is a very very bad rough draft with so many fatal flaws, it wasn't worth continuing after the 25% mark. I do hope that the author hires a professional editor and takes a writing class as her idea had merit. But until she learns how to format a book correctly, no reason to support someone who doesn't take their craft seriously.
**This book has been reported to Amazon for low quality/formatting issues.
I am torn about my review, which I feel like I say about every Kindle book these days. spoilers ahead.
The first few chapters of this book had me wondering why the author classified this book as an academy romance and had me so excited to follow the character. A dominatrix that has a sexy as hell dragon shifter on his knees? sign me up. Then......we got an insecure sister who was bullied her whole life and we lose the spark she had the first few chapters. Maybe she is like that only in her profession? Because we see glimmers throughout the book, especially when her dragon surfaces or when Tomashi gives her a hard time but other wise she is just a normal college age female hanging out in a house full of guys. With very few exceptions in the middle of the book it could be mistaken for just normal romance not paranormal/fantasy. We fall into studying, fighting, and just mundane things with the guys. I guess in the middle I just wanted some more?
We also get told a ton of information. Imeldas lessons are just lesson after lesson and we are supposed to soak in all the knowledge from that versus learning from this world head on. I always struggle with that style of writing. speaking of Imelda. Our main character decides at lunch to not be close with her because she doesn't stick up for Penelope or act as if she cares, then not even a chapter later they are well on their way to being besties? Or when we get the run down of the "popular" crowd, we don't know that Imelda considers the guys family? or that her brother was their bestie? I feel like that is something that gets slotted in this section not over 70ish percent of the book.
The guys were good. I think I left this book really only knowing Elijah and Rapid because everyone else took a back seat, and I am hoping that they don't just disappear in the next book to make room for everyone else, because is it really RH if we only focus on one or two at a time? I also just wanted the prince to come back and reveal he had been her client for a year, I know it's meant to be the cliffhanger and bring us into book two, and I would 100 percent be down with dragging it out if it weren't super super obvious....
overall, I think it's a good start to a series despite me longing for more than the baseline line academy romance with bullied main character. I almost wish those first few chapters lead to a paranormal criminal underground type shifter book rather than relying on the forced proximity of the school as the back drop so that we got more of that edgy adult story rather than one class and mean girls.
So here's the thing 21% of the start of this book was a very very close DNF. I have zero interest in reading about sexual interactions when I haven't even met the characters. I didn't skim, I just skipped.
The characterisation of the heroine has me perplexed. That woman we meet in that first 21% is not the one we get to know for the rest of the story. Quite frankly I would have given more stars if I hadn't been bombarded with smut from the get go. Funnily enough the rest of the smut with her harem is more or less closed door.....??
This is more or less the same formula for the academy genre. Powerless girl finds she's not so powerless, mean girls and gathering her powerful harem. It's been a while since I've read an academy story so I found it entertaining enough. Yet it had me thinking, I've surely read better. I won't bore you all with a list of other similar books, I'm pretty sure we all have some that effortlessly come to mind.
Would I read book 2? Yes. I would like to know how this goes. But note to the author, as a diabetic myself I took offence to calling it "The diabetis" Then when corrected "who the f..k cares" being a response...... If this book is about how bad bullying is Please take a page out of your own book.
Wow!!! This book is amazing, character and world building is on point, plenty of 🌶️🌶️, once I started reading I couldn’t stop! Highly recommend and I cannot wait for book two!
I was offered an ARC for this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you again for offering me this opportunity! I can’t wait for book 2.
I loved the spice throughout, the why choose trope and the found family trope.
There were some things I felt were forgotten to go back to like the message from her foster parents around half way through which we never found out more on and I also wish I got to see an encounter of the twins meeting again.
In some areas I did feel like I was reading a Wattpad book but that’s not to say I wasn’t insanely interested to what was coming next - I definitely was. I can’t wait to see where this leads and also more scenes with Tomashi, I definitely have a favourite boy ;)
Good 1) Female lead was tough without being a bitch, fun while also being well-rounded and sex positive in a clean and entertaining way 2) Male leads were interesting and had their own backstories, personalities and voices 3) LOTS of likable secondary characters 4) Romantic relationship-building was on-page, engaging and set to include actual dates! 5) Pet names for the female lead were not infantalizing or insulting 6) Friendship-building was on-page, relatable and the involvement occurred and varied naturally and realistically 7) Male lead interactions were entertaining and informed their characters 8) Smut was hot 9) Finally! A female dom that actually doms a male sub! 10) BDSM was done in a responsible manner including consent, pre-determined boundaries/limits, safe words and on-going check-ins.
Neutral 1) This is NOT a stand-alone story in a series; this is the first installment of a full story (so it is a serial)
Mixed 1) World-building was robust in certain areas and very thin in others (ie why are fae on earth?) 2) Obligatory 'mean girls' were over-the-top but it was both instructive and interesting how the whole scenario played into the greater fae political and cultural landscape 3) The M/M relationship was compelling and multi-layered but it came out of nowhere late in the story (at 59%) and needed at least one full smut scene depicting their sexual dynamic to make it feel authentic rather than an added contrivance
Bad 1) Writing was often poor, especially descriptions, and contained A LOT of errors, 2) Plot? What plot? 3) Male leads were ridiculously tall compared to the 'tiny' female lead with her 'small' hands (ie second tallest is a foot and a half taller than the female lead!!!) 4) Author then either ignored the height difference during physical interactions or wrote it badly (ie. at one point the foot-and-a-half-taller male lead placed the female lead on a bathroom counter and suddenly his head was level with her chest; sorry, not happening unless he shrunk at least a foot at the same time.) (Dear authors if you must write such an idiotic height difference for some ridiculous reason, use google and painters tape to map it out!) 5) Several names were inane (ie Rapid) 6) The idea that females spend three out of four weeks of the month as slaves to their hormones in a cycle of lust, then pain and finally anger before having one 'normal' week was ludicrous, promoted an antiquated idea of female instability and lacked believability given females hold ruling positions in the fae world.
It's been ages since I was blessed with the opportunity of reading a good romantasy. I haven't finished a book in one sitting in a long time. If you are into slightly dark romance + academia settings + dragons + an easy to follow plot (all the while captivating without being too predictable) this is one book for you
Find the comfiest space, grab your copy, get a drink or three, and don't forget the snacks! I have absolutely loved falling into this story, following each character through their own POV's and learning through them as we advance onward to the Fairview Academy in Hectic Elements!
Gear in for a seductive and captivating tale following the leading FMC, Sinta, as she takes you on a roller-coaster ride through some dark sexual fantacies, empowering and dominating where she needs to be.
Don't forget to buckle in for the mysteries surrounding those around her, always questioning who they are? What are they there for?
These MMC's, Fade, Elijah, Rapid, Tomashi, will have you wanting to crawl on your kness and do as they tell you. Just be sure to beware of dark desires and differences between them. You might just get whiplash! And we have to ask who this mysterious fifth MC is missing right now, Bastien? What does any of this have to do with him??
This book hooked me right from the start and kept me interest all the way to the end. The fmc was so confident and strong through out the whole book. She knew what she want and got what she wanted plus some bonus men along with it. With the twist and turns and also the men I couldn’t but the book down. I read it every chance I could between lunch breaks, before work and after work. With still going to bed for work the next day it will definitely hook you. The men are everything you want and more. Possessive, growly, demanding and big teddy dragons. The ending is a cliff hanger and I can’t wait for the second book to be released.
You know what? I’d read the next book. lol This is the same old tried and true formula when it comes to these academy books with the added intrigue of her being a kinky little thing. Was it predictable? Yes. Does this book need some serious editing and formatting? Absolutely. However, idk I kinda liked it. lol. Now could it be that it’s because I was reading this high as hell and sleep deprived? Possibly. But I shall be taking that second book and reading it thank you very much. I wanna know what’s gonna happen when she meets Bastien again (for the first time outside of their D/s relationship).
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for book 2. FMC has been through a lot and has fought hard to get where she is with little help from family. she forms a wonderful found family at the academy with sweet and crazy love interest and friends . Can't wait to see how the story progresses!
I started this, read about 2 chapters and then put it back down and didn’t try with it again. Until last night I decided to pick it up again and I’m so glad I did, I finished this so fast. I really got into it and into all the characters, especiallyyy Rapid, I love him, he’s so goofy.
3.75/5⭐️ hoping to get more characterisation from the mmcs but yes bamf fmc!!! loving her character and her background is so special to me. can’t wait for book 2!!
This book has everything I was looking for and everything I didn’t know I needed. Love Sinta, love that she is a relatable and flawed fmc. The mix of modern life with the fantasy world is great, not too far fetched. Loved the idea and the execution of the shifting concept, the beasts within. Sinta’s friends are so diverse and likeable in their own ways. And as for the males… I’m glad it’s a reverse harem, because i definitely couldn’t choose. Couldn’t put it down and now anxiously waiting for book 2. Read it and enjoy as I thoroughly did.
Also have to thank the author Ivory Grace so much for gifting me an ebook ARC copy 💖
I have been craving a good magical academy book for a long time and this met all my wants. (hidden destiny, emerging powers, fated mates?, academy setting where she actually attends classes, found fam. etc.) This first book did a pretty good job setting up the relationships, and building some of the world. I am so excited to learn more about her mysterious family and her magical destiny and for the love of everything can we see more of the dragon prince?!?
** The dialogue sometimes was clunky or weird. I believe this is a first time author, which might explain that? But overall, written very well.
There should be an option where we could give a higher star rating than 5 stars. I don’t usually connect so well with all the characters but I did and it was so disappointing when it ended all of a sudden. Like What!? Leaving me yearning (truly doesn’t describe how deep I mean it) to know more! I had to take some time before I wanted to review it because I wanted to just sit with it for a bit. Don’t read any further if you don’t want spoilers. Sinta, (our lead female character) starts the book off being introduced to a new client of hers (she’s a Dom). We get to read her memories while reading her point of view on how she describes shifter characteristics and how she doesn’t have them because she’s a latent snake shifter. What she doesn’t know, is that she’s not a snake shifter, she’s a rare (once in 5 millennia) green dragon, that fuels her powers on eating poisonous food. She doesn’t learn that last part until about 70% through but learning about the dragon part, happened once she got to the Academy that she for a half scholarship for. She was able to pay her portion of school because of her work with that new client that was at the beginning. It feels weird that Sinta hadn’t put it together yet that it was Sebastian. I wanted to yell at her and make her put two and two together but it’s because as the reader, we got to read about the guys memories with this other dragon shifter, and how he’s taken time off to go look for this girl he fell for. So Sinta couldn’t have put it together but she didn’t exactly ask any questions about him either. I loved how Sinta immediately felt at ease with Kenya, and Natalie won me over easily after letting Sinta knock her out so she could beat Tremores ass. It was a brutal fight and I was so proud of Sinta for sticking up for Kenya. I love reading about strong female lead characters, especially if they beat the crap out of them. Santa was adopted with her twin sister when she was 8, her twin turned out to be a unicorn shifter with full powers, and because Sinta was a dragon shifter (they need a more dominate dragon to trigger and help them through a shift), she never shifted so everyone thought she was a snake shifter. Which are the lowest classed shifter, and are treated horribly. Sinta more so. She was from a prominent family that adopted her and her sister. Yet, her sister encouraged other students and teachers to bully her, everything you can imagine. Sinta held all the frustration in, never fighting back, acting “human”. So when she was training with Yelena, she was training in a way that she knew how to do as a human, not as a dragon shifter. Yelena got Sinta to empty the box of horrors from her childhood and reading about it, ir was awful. It brought tears to my eyes, it just goes to show how strong Sinta really is. Once she was able to “feel” without trying to show strong emotions down, she was able to connect with her dragon magic in a way that she couldn’t before. Sinta was moved into “Rising House”, and the guys all originally thought she had broken in to hurt them. Fade the gargoyle, Elijah the lion, and Rapid the Kraken were all gawking at her in her room, threatening her to leave. Then Tomashi the Kitsune shows up, in a murderous rage. Him and Sinta fight for a bit before someone calls their councillor Mr O who confirms she’s assigned to their dorm/house. Tomashi basically hates her and does everything possible to get her to leave. Hiring a PI to investigate her. The others, all fell for her. They all start Gifting her courting gifts. Which is standard in the fae cultures that she learned about in tutoring sessions with Royal Princess Imelda a dragon and her guard Yelena who is also a dragon. Sinta observes plenty of bullying at this school, some against innocents and some instances with other bullies. She wants no part of being in the spot light but it’s thrust upon her when she’s been spotted kissing Fade, then Rapid, when she beat the crap out of that Beserker Tremone for daring to hurt Kenya. She even refused to sit with Imelda and Yelena at lunch but it’s like the Queen bees of the school who threatens to ruin everyone if she doesn’t have a good day do everything in their power to crap on Sinta. So what she’s caught the guys eye, Sinta deserves to feel wanted after what she went through. I’m just so glad she can defend herself. The whip Yelena gave her for Sintas birthday was perfect way to cement that friendship. Getting to read about Sintas passion for art was amazing. I don’t feel that way about art, but I do feel like that when I play piano. It felt familiar, her pure enjoyment out sketching, teaching Imelda and Yelena different ways to bring out their art creation. It was great. I truly enjoyed this book. I read it 2 weeks ago, and was found to review it but I decided to read it again. I’m just sad that there isn’t anymore out yet. I will Definetly be re reading it a 3rd time when the 2nd book comes out.
A Promising but Flawed Debut with Problematic Elements
Hectic Elements (Fairview Academy, Book 1) presents a classic and often compelling romantasy premise: a young woman, endured a childhood of bullying for being "lesser," enters a prestigious academy to discover her true power and identity. The themes of self-discovery and overcoming one's past are strong and provide a solid, enjoyable foundation for the story.
However, the book is hampered by significant execution issues. The plot contains noticeable holes, and the narrative introduces several characters who seem poised for importance, only to drop them entirely, leaving the story feeling unfocused. The relationship development is confusing, with connections that feel unmotivated and shift without clear reason, making it hard to become invested.
My most significant critiques lie in two specific areas. Firstly, the writing itself is uneven, with sections that feel unpolished and pull the reader out of the immersive academy setting.
Secondly, and more importantly, the book's tone presents a concerning dissonance. The main characters are explicitly written as teenagers, which aligns with the academy-age genre. However, the inclusion of very smutty, explicit content creates an uncomfortable and problematic dynamic. Given the protagonist's age and the initial setup of her overcoming a bullied past, the leap into such mature content feels jarring and ill-considered. This choice will likely not sit right with many readers, making the start of her journey feel less empowering and more uncomfortable.
Final Verdict: 2.5/5 Stars
While there are glimmers of an enjoyable magical school story within Hectic Elements, it is overshadowed by structural flaws, underdeveloped plot lines, and a tone that feels at odds with its characters' ages. The problematic mix of teenage protagonists with explicit content is a significant pitfall. This book requires not only edits for pacing and plot but also a serious reconsideration of its intended audience and character portrayal. I would advise readers to approach with strong caution.
So, I’ve been in a reading slump lately. I had to literally force myself to go to sleep so I didn’t finish it fast. That’s how good this book was. I honestly absolutely loved it and I am impatiently waiting for a book two. Which I have no idea when that’s coming out.
So our FMC has been bullied mistreated and just not had a great life. She’s a twin and her twin is treated like everything she does is pure gold and clouds. Meanwhile, like I said, our FMC is literally abused thrown out, and nobody cares about her essentially except for a few keep people in her life. So she is embarking on this new journey to go to college to better her life. And finds out that her twin is also going to college when her twin wanted nothing to do with that type of life since all she wanted to do was be a socialite and a wife.
So our FMC is rightfully mad that her sister is going to school and that their foster parents are paying for her. Meanwhile, she got thrown out of their house and told never to contact them again.
So, we do have mean girls in this book, but I will say they’re not really like prevalent or heavy except for some circumstances. The bullying isn’t necessarily huge at this point.
This book is also very elitist or classist in dealing with the hierarchy of these people and who is at the bottom of the totem pole and doesn’t matter essentially.
But our FMC does make friends and figures out. She’s been lied to her whole life about literally who she is.
The ending in the epilogue, I will say I think I have an idea of who that is and I wanna say it’s like three different people at the moment that I could be but I’m leaning more towards two specifically one really
so if you’re wanting to pick this up, I definitely recommend reading it and I honestly can’t wait for a book two.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was surprising, different, with twists and turns and great characters.
Sinta Cora is a young latent snake shifter, which unfortunately means that she is on the lowest rung of the totem pole. She can’t shift, has no powers, and to top it off, she is a snake. The lowest of the lows.
Her foster parents have mistreated her all her life, her twin is pathetically ambivalent about her situation and the double standards they show towards the two girls. As a unicorn shifter, Aletha, her twin, is a rare and powerful, coveted shifter who is shown every luxury and favour.
Sinta’s life changes forever the day she gets the notification that she has been accepted into Fairview Academy. It changes even more when her councilor declares on the day she arrives, that she is not in fact a snake shifter… Instead she is something by powerful. Rare. And dangerous. Only if she can survive her first shift however.
Put into a house on the academy grounds with five other powerful males, in the hopes it will strengthen her beast within, Sinta is taken with her new roommates.
Well…four of them. Make that three? One wants to kill her. He’s convinced she’s lying about something that could hurt the young men. The fifth? Well, he hasn’t come to the academy yet, so she has yet to meet him. But the other three? They’re everything Sinta wants.
Slowly learning to navigate this incredibly nuanced and different world, Sinta is thrown into academy life, and all the difficulties that come with it and living with five powerful and elite fae.
This book has a good hook and engages the reader quickly, but the editing is a hot mess. If there is a homophone, this author will always choose the wrong one. Every single time. This is basic stuff that Microsoft Word would catch in its spell check. It’s kind of brutal to read.
The book shifts between past tense and present tense at random.
Sinta starts the story off as a sex worker and a domme, but otherwise has zero cool or confidence. She’s anxious, nervous when people pay attention to her, she’s shy about nudity and flirting. You’d think being in a performance based job like a dominatrix, she’s be able to at least fake confidence. While talking to Imelda, she says she dislike attention, and describes herself as “Private. Shy. Awkward. Slightly introverted.” How, exactly, would someone like this even get a job as a domme at a sex club?
The plot is good, but most of the men are poorly developed. Their powers and animals barely make an appearance, they’re not in Sinta’s classes, and they don’t spend much time outside the house.
Anyway… four stars is really generous giving the horrible editing. I hope the author enlists the aid of a basic word processor and spell check software for book 2.
Sinta - thought she was a latent snake shifter but discovers she’s a latent poison loving green dragon. Rapid - prince, Kraken, charming rake Elijah - prince, lion Bastien- dragon prince, absent at the academy, Sonya’s main client Tomashi- prince, spends most of the book hating Sinta because he hates women; secret relationship with Rapid on the down low Fade - French, soft spoken, gargoyle
