What if the fairy tale characters you know are simply rewoven versions of who they once were?
One catalyst sets in motion a tale as old as time—spinning Snow White and Sleeping Beauty into Emberly, an orphan with paranormal dreams. Puss In Boots and The Brave Little Tailor threading into Xander, a socially anxious apprentice. The two siblings have been ripped apart with no memory of who they are and where they came from.
In a world where memories evolve and conflict arises, finding trust and gaining confidence might be their undoing. Can they rely on the wicked stepsister seeking redemption, the giant, or his slayer?
Racing against time and lost memories, they must discover the magic of real life that occurs between once upon a time and happily ever aft
Oh my goodness! What a story! This is Ms. Crown’s debut and it was so good! I could not believe the ending and am already eagerly waiting for the next story! Heads-up, it does not end in this book and it is a bit of a cliffhanger. All of the characters were so lovely! I loved how human they felt. We get to see them grow over the book and I am so excited to continue to see them grow as individuals and as a team. They each had their own struggles and each felt real and understandable. Xander was so sweet! I felt for him as he struggled with his identity and confidence. He was discovering so much throughout the story and he wanted to belong. He had been suddenly thrown into an adventure that forced him into action. Oh I felt for Emberly! She was also seeking her place and kept getting stuck. Her imagination was her safe place, but her circumstances kept leaving her lost and feeling alone. It was so interesting to see her dreams and how they gave hints to the story and the other characters. I loved the way that the fairytales were intertwined into their stories! Reagan was quite the character! I admired his dedication and determination. He had a mission and was going to accomplish it no matter what. His passion and quick tongue could cause him some issues though! He was the catalyst for the adventure, but he still needed the others to complete the journey. Livvy was a lot of fun! She was also quick on her feet and I loved getting to know her. It was interesting to see the other characters through her eyes. They both had their own stories that were really interesting and I am so excited to see more for them all! I loved the fairytale inspiration in this story! It was such a fun twist and the story was so engaging! It definitely picked up in the second half and by the end, I could not put it down! The beginning did feel a bit more like setup, but it definitely made up for it once things started happening! This is a clean fairytale inspired fantasy.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
The Truth in the Tale was an unexpected ride! What I loved the most was how Nikki Crown wove together multiple fairytales into one seamless story. It felt less like reading a single retelling and more like a treasure hunt, constantly keeping me on my toes as I picked out hidden Easter eggs from various classic tales. It added a layer of intrigue that made me eager to keep reading, never knowing what familiar story would pop up next. And unlike some retellings that can get distracting by the original plotlines, this one just made everything feel richer.
The emotional depth was a whole different level, though. I wasn’t prepared for the raw, intense trauma the characters went through—it felt so real, and at times, it was almost too real. The emotional weight was heavy but grounded the characters in a way that made them feel three-dimensional and relatable, even in a fantastical setting. If you have triggers, I would recommend asking around.
By the end, I still had a few lingering questions, but honestly, that just shows how intricate and layered the plot was. It’s a beautifully meshed fairytale retelling. You can tell Nikki Crown poured so much of herself into this novel, and it really shines through.
If you're a fan of fairytales with emotional complexity, The Truth in the Tale is definitely worth picking up. Just be prepared to feel all the feels! ☺️
I absolutely love fairytale retellings, and this book takes it a step further by combining several fairytales together to create a beautiful new story.
There's not much to the world-building, at least not yet, so I could easily slip into the story. It's beautifully written with the perfect pacing, and was the perfect cozy fantasy companion for winter! I loved the tailor metaphors for Xander, as well as the energy around Emberly and Livy, both of whom have vivid imaginations.
The one word I would use to describe this book is whimsical.
All of the characters are lovable in their own ways, even as each one deals with his or her flaws and insecurities, as well as hopes and dreams.
While I enjoyed the first half as it set the stage, I really got into the story in the second half, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough in the last 10%. Some of the revelations I anticipated, but i still lived seeing it all come together for the characters!
And that ending!! I have QUESTIONS!! 😱 I wouldn't say it ends on a cliffhanger, but there are definitely unanswered questions to prepare you for book 2, which I am now eagerly (read: impatiently) waiting for!
Congrats, Nikki, on your debut! I really enjoyed it!
I absolutely adored this book! I loved the fairytales and these retellings are so good! It ends on a total cliffhanger and leaves you craving more! I highly recommend this clean adventure filled retelling.
Xander, a socially awkward apprentice to a tailor finds his world turned upside down when the spirited Ryker appears in his shop and tells him he needs help to reunite Xander’s lost family. The only problem is Xander doesn’t remember having a family. In fact, he can’t remember much before he was adopted. But as he continues to receive flashes from the past, he agrees to help Ryker find the family he doesn’t remember.
Emberly, a beautiful orphan with paranormal dreams, has been taken in by the Tremaine estate. With the help of a lumberjack, Emberly escapes into the forest. While staying with a small group of dwarves, her knight in shining armor suddenly appears to take her to his home and give her the life she’s always wished for. But all is not as it appears.
Can Xander overcoming anxiety and save his sister? Can Emberly solve the mystery of her strange dreams? Will their family ever be reunited?
I haven’t read too many fairytale retellings yet, but I just read “The Truth in the Tale,” by Nikki Crown and it was such a great book! This is multiple fairytales all in one story!😮💙 It’s quite the mashup!
The two main characters are siblings, Emberly and Xander. Which are the authors take on Snow White/Sleeping Beauty and The Brave Little Tailer/Puss in Boots! We also get a few more side characters, like the giant slayer, and the evil stepsister.
The characters all have different things happening throughout the book and the adventure you’re taken on with both sides is so exciting! I can’t wait for book two, to see where the story goes!
“The Truth in the Tale,” releases on January 14! Keep an eye out for it!! ✨
*Thank you to the author for the E-ARC copy of the book.
There is so much I enjoyed about this book. I love a good fairy tale retelling, and this was a lot of fairy tales wrapped up in one. In the loosest sense, it reminded me of the Once Upon a Time TV show (just in how everything is connected and nothing is as it seems). I think this is going to be such a fun series and I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I always think the first book in the series is the hardest because you are meeting the characters at the beginning of a grand adventure that is going to take multiple books to complete (this is currently scheduled to be a 6 book series). There are four main characters in this book: Xander, Reagan, Emberly, and Livy. Everyone has their flaws (except for Reagan 😘), and while no one is perfect, they are all still likable… which I really appreciated! I did have to remind myself multiple times throughout the book that they are all still teenagers and not to expect them to act like adults (I wanted to smack Xander and Emberly a couple of times 😄). I think Reagan and Xander are 18 or 19, and Emberly and Livy are a few years younger. I love the premise. The cover is beyond stunning. And the cliffhanger had me screaming. I can’t wait for this summer when book 2 is scheduled to come out.
To quote Moira from the book, “Reagan is my favorite! He's so charming!” Moira, I couldn’t agree more.
3.5 stars. Clean YA Fantasy with multiple points of view. I loved how there were bits of different fairy tales woven into this original fantasy. It was a slow start for me so I didn’t fully connect with the characters but I liked how the story progressed. They are on a journey to find lost siblings and there are many questions ending on a cliffhanger. Good debut!

“I’ll always come to your rescue, whether you think you need it or not.”
-Friends, The Truth In The Tale, is more amazing than I could have ever imagined it to be. It is a charming, unique, delightful, and moving story! From the first page to the last page, I was hooked and fully engaged in this thrilling adventure with multiple POV’s. By the last page, my heart wasn’t ready to be finished so soon. I definitely need book two sooner than later because I have unanswered questions that need some answers. What makes this story shine for me, is that this dear story is delicately formed with bits and pieces of well-known fairytales and then weaved together with such precision to be blended with a twist, to create something that is enchantingly memorable, immersive, and filled with such heart. With this comes, such delightful unpredictability, vivid details, captivating adventure, great mystery, sparks of chemistry, a dash romance, and layers of depth. The characters are endearing, as they have each risen above their own real life problems while holding true to their hopes and dreams. It’s hard to believe that this is a debut novel, as it is so well-done! Truth In The Tale, is simply fantastic and is worth the captivating and beautiful read! I absolutely look forward to more to come in this lovely series and by this dear author!💯

-Content: real world problems: anxiety, abandonment, bullying, and emotional abuse.
“We mustn’t lose hope. We need to hold on to what is right. Being hopeful doesn’t mean being fearless though.”

I really liked how many different fairytales were woven into this one book. There were more than just the ones from the synopsis! I was definitely kept in suspense (and still am!) about who Reagan believes to be behind the disappearances of his friends. I thought he should have explained more in the beginning, but we’re still left hanging! There was a lot of childhood trauma: Reagan’s friends all disappearing, Emberly growing up with a family that didn’t want her, and then what came after. Xander seemed to fare best, yet he has panic attacks with no discernible triggers. So while this book covers some heavy topics, there’s still great love, budding love, finding family, and I’ve got hope for what comes next for the characters!
I liked the concept of the book and for a debut, this is one great book. However, I found the writing, the flashbacks/memories to be a little confusing at times. I found myself wishing that there was some more guidance on the memories so that I was more engrossed in the book.
I am looking forward to book 2 and hoping that it solves more mysteries.
Wow! What an amazing debut! The Truth in the Tale is a must read for fairytale lovers. Nikki Crown weaves a creative, unique, utterly addictive story containing clever nods to all the fairytales both well known & more obscure. I was delighted to find all the hidden Easter eggs & figuring out which tale they came from. Intrigue, mystery, & romance permeate the story & now I’m dying to read the next book.
The story begins with a fairytale told to six year old Moira at bedtime, but it’s no ordinary tale & soon I was caught up in the four main characters’ lives who’ve been stolen from the world they used to know. Xander is a tailor’s apprentice who struggles with anxiety & stuttering & longs for something more. When a stranger arrives in his shop, he offers him clues to his origins & an adventure. Emberly’s a delightful mash up of several fairytale heroines including Snow White hoping to find her happily ever after. She uses her imagination to deal with her difficult circumstances, always looking for a handsome prince to rescue her. Reagan blames himself for the loss of his dearest childhood friends & sets off on a mission to find each one. But, what happens when he’s the only one who remembers the truth? Lily’s an intelligent young woman part Puss in Boots & Cinderella who finds herself caught up in the search for Emberly. As she helps Xander & Reagan, she grows closer to Xander, but can she forgive him for a hurtful mistake?
I adored this story! It really kept me on my toes & I was completely caught up in deciphering all the clues. There are snatches as to what happened in the past through Emberly’s dreams & Xander’s memories, but it’s still a mystery in need of unraveling. The characters are so endearing & seemingly real. They each have their own trials to overcome & I enjoyed seeing the growth they experience throughout. The details & setting really drew me in & I can’t wait to find out the complete story.
This book’s the first in the series, & definitely leaves on a cliffhanger. Highly recommend to all fairytale lovers YA & up! Can’t wait for the next book! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author but also purchased a copy through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.
The Truth in the Tale was a charming and fun debut from author Nikki Crown. I wasn't 100% sure what to expect going into this book, knowing it was going to be some kind of fairy tale mash up and retelling. It turned out to be unexpectedly addictive and I was totally hooked from the prologue on. I love the way the author tells the story in multiple POVs which totally left me guessing to this moment about who the couple is in the beginning. I need to know and am now counting down for book two because I want answers. :) This story was really fun because it wove all these parts and moments of recognizable fairy tales into one new story, but the author blended them and twisted them in a way that kept me on my toes. She also created her own fairy tale with the premise that these characters’ experiences are where the tales come from. I was excited every time I could figure out the fairy tale that inspired a scene or moment, but then the author made things her own so it left the tale unpredictable. This book is a good read for middle grade/YA and I love that it's clean. With adventure, mystery, romance, and all the things that capture us in fairy tales, this is a book I enjoyed and I can't wait for more. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own. 4.5 stars.
I can't believe this is the work of a debut author!
The Truth In The Tale is so incredibly well-written and feels both comfortingly familiar and fresh/new.
The fairy tales we know must have come from somewhere. This feels like what could be the origin story for these tales and characters we think we know, but deeper and perhaps more realistic.
It was so fun to find so many easter eggs the author sprinkled throughout, hinting at familiar stories.
This book is great for fans of fairy tale mashups like Into the Woods and Once Upon A Time and can be enjoyed by any age.
I loved the depth in the characters and seeing both how they dealt with their unique challenges and used their strengths to press forward in achieving their goals.
It has everything I enjoy in a book and done well: Deep 3-D characters you can't help but root for, humans helping each other, humor, delightful banter, a grand adventure, sprinkled with mystery and sweet romance.
Can't wait for the next book in the series to see where it takes these lovely characters!
This was a delightful book told from several characters POV, weaving a tale of mixed up fairy tales and new stories for our characters. I was enchanted with the characters and each of their own storylines. It was a fantastic blend of a new story, with elements from varied fairy tales and childhood stories. It ends on a cliffhanger, so be warned. There will be several more books in this series.
Emberly and Xander are siblings that don't remember their past or each other. Reagan is on a quest to find his best friends and their siblings after they disappeared. As he finds Xander, he is joined by Emberly's step sister Livvy to find Emberly and get answers to the questions he needs and help them remember their past lives. As they each go through the own memories and journeys to discover the truth, they get more than bargained for.
I can't wait for the rest of the books and to find out about the characters and their stories. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
"Happily Ever Afters take time and patience, my dear. If you want the true story and the happiness that comes from it, you will also have to endure the heartache and pain that precede it."
This book had a fun mix of pieces of different fairy tales put together to create something new! I like the idea from the beginning that there is truth in stories. It has unique and likeable characters that work together as they search for Xanders lost family. With lots of unanswered questions through the story it kept me curious to know more! Parts in the middle did leave me wanting for a little more adventure with their searching though. The ending was really interesting and left me needing to know what's next!
This is a good clean fairytale read with no bad language.
I was so excited to get to read this fantasy book by Nikki Crown. And I was not disappointed. Everything about this book just made me want to read more and more to find out what would happen next.
This book starts with a mom telling her young daughter a bedtime story. Soon the reader is just as enthralled as the daughter. I love the way the author wove different fairy tales through this one.
There are several main characters that the reader gets to know as our story goes along. There's Reagan, Livvy, Emberly and Xander. They each have a part to play in the story. They help each other as they travel trying to figure out just what has happened to them.
This one has so much going on, you won't want to put it down!
I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in this series!
I had a hard time getting into this book at first. Then I realized I was constantly analyzing to figure out what fairy tale might be the model for the current behaviors. When I began letting the story stand on its own, I began enjoying it more—and the relevant fairy tale would sometimes pop in my brain.
My preconceived idea, based on other fairy tale series, was that each book in the series would be based on a different fairy tale. Instead the author wove several fairy tales throughout the story line, which gave the story more freedom to be creative.
The disadvantage, to me, was that the second book is actually a continuation of the first, which meant the story was not a standalone. Though there was not a cliff hanger, much was left unresolved for the following books.
This story had me hooked! I've always been a fan of fairy tales, but this retelling was so much fun! A mashup of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are Emberly. Puss In Boots and The Brave Little Tailor are Xander. Emberly and Xander are siblings that have no memory of who they are and where they came from. I fell in love with all of these characters.
Can they rely on the wicked stepsister seeking redemption, or the giant, or his slayer? Finding trust and gaining confidence is an integral part of this story. The fairytale inspiration was such a great twist on the characters and their personalities. By the 2nd half of the book, I couldn't put it down. It definitely ends on a cliffhanger.
I was also able to read The Flaw in the Inheritance, a Novella, which gives you a bit more insight into Xander and Livy. They quickly find that all roads lead home and sometimes listening to your heart is a distraction that could cost you everything. I can't wait to read more in this series! This is quickly becoming a favorite!
4.5 stars Wow! The intrigue and mystery of this one takes hold of you from the very beginning!! This one was super surprising and really draws you in with the world building and mystery from page one. The fairytale mash-ups are super fun and unique.
What a beautifully intricate and detailed story. A mysteriously whimsical tale of strength, friendship, family, courage, and love. I loved the unique way these stories have intertwined. So much was at play here and I never knew what to expect. The characters had so many layers and secrets. They were wonderfully thought out and I can't wait to see how their stories continue to develop.
I loved the story so much and all the suspense and mystery but there was a lot to piece together. This story is still living in my mind. I am hoping the second book comes super fast because I need to know more! I At some points the descriptions were a bit flowery but overall they were still intriguing and interesting.
There was mystery, intrigue, romance, suspense, fairytales, so much to love!
I am just so excited for anyone releasing their debut novel. It must be the coolest feeling and I want to do everything I can to help!
This is one sure is fun, a mixed up and twisted tale based on all of favorite fairytales! There are a bunch of characters and I was curious the entire time how it was going to end. I am definitely reading book 2. But don't worry, I can be patient :)
If you like fairytales, protective brothers, first loves, likeable characters and twists and turns, check this one out!
I loved the concept of this book, and for a debut novel, it was so well written. The multiple romances and povs is not something that I normally enjoy, but it was very well done, and I found myself deeply invested in the main characters. I do wish that there had been more answers given regarding the flashbacks/forwards. I did get a little confused towards the end, but I'm hoping those questions will be answered in book 2! It was honestly very Once Upon a Time-esque, and I very much enjoyed it!!
The Truth In The Tale takes your favorite fairy tales and gives them new life. This story starts off with a little girl asking for a story and it is quite the tale. The characters have to overcome lots and they grow into the heroes they are meant to be. I am so excited for the next one to come out. I NEED to know what happens next.
I really liked the plot and the characters and can't wait to read the next one. I loved that bits of so many different fairy tales were mixed into the story.
I was a bit confused about the time period--it felt regency but the language and descriptions didn't feel like they fit that period. Overlooking that (and a handful unnecessary commas), it was a really enjoyable book.
I’ve read a lot of fairy tale retellings and mash ups, but this one had me guessing and surmising from the get go! I loved every minute of it and can’t wait to learn more about Xander, Livy, Emberly, Reagan and James!
This was an interesting book with lots of different fairy tales mixed in or touched on. It is the first in a series and leaves you with more questions then answers. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
The Truth in the Tale is fantastic!! I'm fairly certain this book has everything you could want - fairytale mashups in a totally new and unique way, good guys you can't help but love, villains you want to kick in the shins, adventure, intrigue, mystery, a hint of romance, a cliffhanger of an ending....what is there not to love here??
I am dying to know what happens next to Xander, Reagan, Livy, and Emberly. Book 2 seriously cannot get here fast enough. I just need answers here.
If this book isn't on your TBR lists already, it needs to be. Trust me friends, this is one you don't want to miss.
Many thanks to the author for the early copy; all thoughts are my own.
This story is one of the most unique, multi-fairytale retellings in one, books I've ever read. With incredibly deep stories, characters who are complicated and emotionally charged moments that leave you anxious to read more, this book is one you'll struggle to put down.
This debut definitely has me excited to read the stories that this author will create in the years ahead!
A cute story where as it stated in the series title, "fairy tales" are "rewoven". I love that the main characters are brothers and sisters and that they are fighting against time and lost memories to figure out where they originally came from. Emberly is a mix of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty and Xander is a mix of Puss in Boots and The Brave Little Tailor. Seeing these fairytales mixed together and creating a new story is so fun! A charming new fairytale that readers will enjoy!
A complimentary copy of the book was provided. A review was not required and all views and opinions expressed are my own.
