⭐️⭐️⭐️ Two Years Dead by Alan Cupp is a quick, engaging read about trying to rebuild a life while still be haunted by the past. It’s a straightforward story with relatable themes of redemption and personal growth, and a smattering of romance.
Two Years Dead is a new novel by Alan Cupp who has a number of previously published works. Set in the USA it is a story of redemption featuring Jay Fields, a young man who is keen to escape the all too familiar teenage background of being sucked into the world of criminal gangs.
The story starts in a dramatic style as he awakes from a two year coma, caused by being shot in the head. We learn about his troubled past and Jay is given the golden opportunity of a fresh start under a new identity, which he surprisingly declines.
I found the character of Jay infectious. More like a puppy or a lively child than a seasoned criminal. He has boundless energy, cares for those close to him, is determined to learn from his past errors and has a strong sense of right and wrong.
Whilst have yet to read any of Cupp’s previous books I found his writing style in Two Years Dead a perfect match for Jay’s character. The text flows at a pace that suggests Capp does not pause for thought or, at times, even to breathe.
The relationship with Megan is unlikely but Capp makes it work very well. There is a lot of gentle humour and a bit of cheese. The story climaxes with some threatened danger and the plot is explained with a usefully placed confession.
Whilst Two Years Dead could be considered lightweight it was very entertaining and if he can manage it I would like to hear more of Jay and Megan. I have awarded four stars.
