I should state up front that Sarah Pratt is a friendly acquaintance of mine. She is the dungeon master of my mystery book club and we both attend a local writers conference each August. I had heard her read from this work on two occasions and bought it on that basis. I had the advantage of hearing her voice in my mind's ear as I read Poppy. Humour is a very personal taste, but I understand and appreciate Sarah's.
Dana is a pharmacist, but that seems to be secondary to her gravitational attraction for eccentric people. It soon becomes apparent that she has oddities of her own. Sarah produces a varied assortment of characters. Despite the brevity of this novella, I found them well described. There's Ben, the hypochondriac who frequents Dana's pharmacy. Then we meet Louise with a prosthetic foot and a belligerent attitude. And Porky, so called because he wears a tee shirt but no pants. He a nudist but sensitive about his belly. Eventually we meet Constable Ted Partridge who may complicate life for all of them.
As I said, Dana has her own kinks. She haunts a hookup app for serial one night stands. As soon as the deed is done, she barely has time to get dressed before she is compelled to get away. The descriptions of her carnal encounters were amusing, to say the least.
At one of the readings that I attended, Sarah told us a bit about the dream that started this writing project. I wish my subconscious was half so creative or that I could remember my dreams at all. Dream on, Sarah!
This is a wonderful short story. I was invested in the characters and read through it in one sitting. Love when friends recommend books that turn out better than expected.
Dana is a pharmacist by day and a serial hookup app user by night. That is, until she becomes close to one of her customers, Ben. As she becomes closer to Ben, she realizes that she may actually be falling for him, going against her previously held notions around dating. However, Ben is hiding a huge secret, one that will likely change Dana's life. If Ben is willing to share before it's too late.
I enjoyed the premise, but parts of the short story fell flat. I felt some parts could have been taken out to explore Dana and Ben's relationship a bit more and give the story some of the depth it needed. I flew through the story in one sitting because I was so invested in them, but it just didn't come together for me. This is a great short read, however! It's very well-written and will keep you invested throughout.
Thank you to Radical Publishing and Sarah L Pratt for the book. I received a copy of this book for free and am leaving a review voluntarily.
This is the first book I’ve read by Sarah L. Pratt. It won’t be the last.
They’re All Named Poppy is a strangely cerebral story with unexpected emotional heft. Told through the POV of Dana, a pharmacist who specializes in inventive compounding, this speedy novella expeditiously explores a series of off-kilter romantic relationships between a really quirky cast of characters.
Pratt is an excellent writer who uses wit, wordplay, and psychologically-sentimental descriptions to flesh out her weird world. I enjoyed her effortless flow of prose interspersed with insightful—and oddball—dialogue; and I was impressed by Pratt’s command of the creative narrations.
This story stuck with me long after I finished reading it. I highly suggest adding it to your Must-Read list if you too are a “square egg.”
Thank you to Radical Publishing for providing a free copy. They’re All Named Poppy is an emotional yet surprisingly sweet novella. The story ended up in an entirely different place than I thought it was going, but I enjoyed it very much. I was very invested in Dana and Ben’s relationship, and I will be looking forward to more books by Sarah Pratt.
Delightfully quirky characters, entertaining dialogue and a surprising yet inevitable ending that kept me reading start to finish in the same sitting. Hope the author is working on a sequel.
