He Vowed She Would Marry Him...

Years ago, Honoria Pyne was forced to make a devil's bargain with a mysterious rogue. Now one of the ton's greatest heiresses, her world is shattered when the devil comes to claim his prize. Though she longs to scorn James Marbury, her body remembers too well his searing touch, and the seductive whisper of his voice spurs memories of one passion-filled night—when captor became willing captive, and prisoner became glorious accomplice...when he was all she desired.

Once he'd owned Honoria body and soul, but his need for her was so great that he abandoned a lifetime of dreams for the chance to share with her the delights of desire. Now, restored to his rightful place as heir to an English title, James has returned to London to make amends and to marry his untouchable beauty—whether she wants him or not. Only Honoria is no longer his prisoner...and she had sworn to hate him forever.

But some promises are made to be broken.

It was okay, and I might read more of the author's books eventually, but there were number of things that annoyed me.

Flashbacks. They were endless. I think it would have been better handled to separate the book into parts, or to even just imply what had happened before. I pretty much understood what had happened before from their thoughts and conversations, so the flashbacks were unnecessary.

The whole duchess thing. The peerage has rules, and making up new ones just seems silly. While Charles II did make his mistresses duchesses, it was generally for life, and he made their children peers in their own right, with inheritance working as usual (that is, to first male child) after that. And absolutely no titles go to the eldest child regardless of gender. There are some old earldoms and baronies that can descend to females if they are only children, but not dukedoms. As far as I know, there is one dukedom that can be inherited by a female, since the first duke had only daughters after his son died, but that's pretty much only after every male descended from the duke dies first. And that was only because the duke was a great war hero.

And also, even if the heroine is the heir to a duke, she would not be referred to as a duchess. Her father is still alive, so it seemed kind of silly. (The male heir to a duke certainly wouldn't be referred to as a duke. He might be a future duke, but he's probably a current marquess or earl or viscount. Since there are no female heirs to dukes, and no eldest-child-inherits-no-matter-what-gender peerages, I certainly can't say for certain, but it seems unlikely she's be referred to as a duchess in the present tense. I mean, she could very well die, and them where would they be? Anyway, women, if they can inherit at all, are always heirs presumptive, not heirs apparent, because there is always the possibility that the male holder of the title could father a son up until his dying day, which would then take the place of the daughter. Which means that they get no courtesy titles at all.)

The heroine's obsession with thinking herself plain, because her idiot ex-fiancé told her dumb stuff, and despite the hero's obvious feelings to the contrary, got really annoying after a bit.

The plot itself was pretty ridiculous, but it was kind of fun, so I still enjoyed the book to a certain extent.

Endless. Pirate (who is actually a British peer, although he doesn't know it) takes Duchess (who is disguised as a rich merchant's daughter) captive and adds her to his personal harem. Many years later they meet at a society dinner party and passion is re-ignited?

Puh-leeze.

enjoyable read. Occasional stupidity of the characters detracts, but the imagery is nice.
