Ian Sutherland should have hanged for his treason against the British Crown, along with his brother and the other Scottish freedom fighters. But he was spared, only to be shipped to Maryland and sold as an indentured servant—a fate worse than the death he'd expected. Ian has sworn nothing will stop him from escaping and returning to Scotland to salvage what's left of his clan, until his master's sudden death leaves a young widow, Fancy Marsh, alone to care for her family—and to keep her cruel, covetous brother-in-law from taking what's rightfully hers. Honor compels Ian to help Fancy, and love, stronger than a bondsman's chains, binds their souls. Yet Robert Marsh will not relinquish his claim on Fancy without a struggle, and Ian finds he is forced to fight again—for his love...and his life.
I was intrigued with this book because I loved the wild hills and rocky coast of Scotland with it's tragic story of bonnie Prince Charlie. I had an ancestor who came from England as an indentured 7 year servant in exchange for her passage. My grandmother told me that her bare back was laced and criss crossed with scars from whippings she received. So this was another connection I found with the book before I ever began reading. Patricia Potter has autographed this personally to me although I am loth to remember the circumstances of our meeting. Young Fancy becomes widowed shortly after her husband brings home Ian, a bondservant to help on the farm. Working together despite the struggles in opposite directions, they learn to respect and appreciate each other's strength and virtues. I love the way the author is able to build friendship and honor in commitments which lead to romance. Although i could do with less sexual language, I appreciate that the characters held their desires in check until after they were married. Fancy is strong, independent and faithful. Ian is also strong but loving.
It has been awhile since a read a historical romance. I am not familiar with this author. She was pretty good. The book was very plot driven vs romance /sex driven. She did not spell out a few things that happened in the past and left that to our imaginations and I guess I wanted it spelled out... was I correct in thinking what happened happened? Ian Suthurland watched his family and friends die in the scottish battlefields. He is sent to America as an indentured servant after watching his brother and friends hung for their treason. He is bought by an ailing man who has a wife and children . They do not believe in buying humans but figured an indentured servant vs a slave had a choice. They need help because he is so ill. He has an evil brother who wants the wife, the land and the horses. The day after buying Ian, the man dies.
Blah blah blah... Ian and the wife fall in love, the children help him see there is hope in the world and the evil brother in law reeks havoc on their farm, and their lives and they have to figure out a way to survive and possible love.
Ian Sutherland and his family and clan fought and were captured by the British at Culloden Moor. When they're captured and imprisoned, brothers Ian and Derek expect the worst. When Derek is hung, Ian expects to be too, but is instead, sold as an indentured servant in Maryland. Ian is bought by John Marsh, a dying younger son, to help on his MD horse farm. Ian is defiant, but when John dies the night they return home, Ian reluctantly agrees to stay and help the young widow, her son and daughter and mute sister. When Ian realizes what John's brother Robert will do to get back the horses and land now belonging to Fancy and her children, he's drawn deeper into the family. He wants to escape back to Scotland to find his last remaining sister, but love conspires to keep him in MD. He and Fancy marry he teaches all to read and the evil brother is killed. The sister is found and all live happily. Loosely tied to "Starcatcher". Good story.
This book took me forever to read because it caused me such anxiety. I read four pages, sometimes four paragraphs before closing the book. I was so scared. Yes I knew that it would all turn out okay, but in the moment, it feels like you are Fancy Marsh fighting for her life, her children, her sister, her love.
The thing is Robert Marsh was the embodiment of evil. He had zero good quailites. So every page that he was on had my eyes skimming the page to escape from him.
Oh but Ian. Sigh. He really did make it all worth it. How I love a scottish accent. Even just reading it.
It wasn't just Ian. I loved Fortune, Noel, Amy, Trouble, and Lucky. I wanted to keep them all safe.
And the poor preacher. Hmm. I wish the epilogue added that he and his wife had a baby. That would have been the cherry on top.
Very good characters with funny human twists. Emotional historical and love the animal sidekicks. Really enjoyed reading this novel. A can't put down book.
