Driven to save her brother by contacting her estranged husband, Lane, Paige Morgan is flooded by the emotions of their marriage and is forced to secure her brother's freedom by giving up her own. Reissue.
Mary Lynn Baxter was born on 28 July 1943 in Lufkin, Texas, USA, where she bred, home of the cowboy - hero of the Western romance, which is one of the most popular of the category's sub-genres. She would be the first to say that it's her background that gives her a unique feel for romance writing.
Since she was a young girl, books and reading have been an important part of her life. Only after she read all the "goodies" in her public library did her mother encourage her to buy Harlequin romances, then 35 cents each. Wow! Those reading years laid the background for her decision to major in Library Science at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, and become a school librarian.
After eight years of working in various school systems, she felt a need to do something different. What she wanted was to open a bookstore. With the help of her husband, Leonard, and her mother, Mary Lynn did just that. For over 20 years she sold books, and loved every minute of it. Then Mary Lynn decided she needed a new challenge. Following an intense amount of pushing and prodding from her husband she took the plunge and tried her hand at writing.
After months of agonising and chewing her nails, she finally mailed All our Tomorrows to Silhouette books in February 1981. One year later it was published as a Silhouette Special Edition. Now, over 40 books later, she's still writing. Mary Lynn can't think of anything else she'd rather do with her time and energy. She surfaces from her writing, she's a voracious reader. But this petite dynamo is always happy to tumble out of her world of fiction into her local fitness center for a bracing workout. She's also dedicated to her volunteer work... and still manages to fit in plenty of quality time with her family at their home in Lufkin, Texas.
I'm giving this an extra star because I liked learning something about diamonds and the jewelry business, especially the designing. But the story had too many weak points.
The H and h seemed to be on the right track at first, as the H was mindful of their differences (she was a 20-year-old college student and innocent, he was a 33-year-old business tycoon and sophisticated) and wanted to keep a distance and take things slow, but then they can't fight their feelings, make love and get married just two weeks later.
And then everything changes! Whereas before he encouraged her ambitions to design jewelry and someday open a store, he does an about face and now doesn't want her to continue her studies and wants her to forget about jewelry designing and concentrate on being a wife/social hostess. It didn't make sense! He was a jewelry store mogul, I doubt he's have considered her competition, in fact, why not make her in charge of one of his stores and keep it in the family? There was never a reason for the big change, why he went from being all for her jewelry designing aspirations to being against them.
Not to mention his being away for long periods on business trips to other countries. His wanting her home all the time if he was home a lot makes sense but wanting her to stay home while he's away in other countries for weeks at a time was just being selfish. Her talent for jewelry designing was the same as if she'd been a dancer or a singer, it was a part of her.
Both the H and h were too quick to listen to the h's mother, who was obviously a high strung and a bit on the neurotic side. Anything she said should have been taken with a grain of salt. When the h decided to leave the H at least for a while, to think things through (and since he left her alone to go overseas for a whole month, I can't say I blame her too much), she went back to stay with her mother and younger brother and then decided she wanted to go back home and work things out with the H (especially when she found out she was pregnant), but her mother told her not to, that she should let him come home, see that she had gone and then come after her. The h let herself be talked into that, and it sure backfired! It ended up with the H (out of anger and hurt pride) requesting a legal separation, the h falling down, miscarrying and getting dangerously ill, and the H thinking (courtesy of his meddling mother-in-law) that the h wanted nothing more to do with him and had aborted their baby! (He should have had more sense than to take anything that woman said at face value.) The h, meanwhile, thought he never knew about the baby.
He later admits he knew in his heart she would never have done that, so why the heckm didn't he go talk to her about it, tell her what he thought and why, instead of keeping it to himself. It was pretty dumb!
So, they remain separated and living separate lives for two years, during which she works for a jewelry company and starts making a name for herself as a designer, while he expands his jewelry empire and starts seeing another woman. They get in each other's lives again when she needs his financial help because her rebellious brother has gotten himself in serious legal trouble.
His cryptic remark about her being pregnant when she says she needs help has to do with his remembering what he thinks happened with their baby, but it didn't make sense when he said it. Of course, it makes her remember the baby she lost. Despite the bad feelings between these two, the chemistry's still there and they have several close calls that almost got them in bed. He uses her brother's situation to get her to come back to him for the time being, but despite their getting along pretty well while traveling and sightseeing (that part was pretty interesting), there's a lot of tension, because they've agreed to stay in separate bedrooms and meanwhile, they're both so hot for each other.
There were too many strange things about this book. For one thing, the h was sure accident prone! She falls on she stairs, falls off her bike, faints, hits her head, breaks a glass and needs stitches, unbelievable!! It's a wonder she was able to design intricate jewelry without wrecking every piece she worked on! Not to mention she apparently has a nervous stomach that acts up a lot, even when she's not pregnant, and when she is, talk about a Barf Fest! The author seems to like having her get all queasy and then throw up!
For another, there's the ambiguous relationship the H had with the OW. He claims at first that he wants a divorce because during their two years apart he met someone who'll be content to be his wife and not put her career first, like the h. When did the h ever give him that impression? She had told him when they met about her jewelry designing ambitions, yet she put them aside for the time when they got married, so how's that putting her career first? While they were apart, her career took top focus but at the time that had nothing to do with him. It seems this guy never really knew his wife, or else was talking out of his hat. He gives the h the impression he's moved on, then he does an about face and says he'll help her brother if she comes back to him. As for the OW? She shows up at a restaurant where they're having dinner and (ignoring the h) invites the H to a party and he calmly tells her he's getting back with the h, and she doesn't seem to take that too seriously. What sort of relationship did they have??? That's never made clear. Were they seeing each other a long time or just recently? Did the H actually propose to her or was he just considering it, or trying to see if the h would be bothered when he mentioned it? (She was but hid it well.) And did they sleep together? I guess since the H and h were legally separated it wouldn't be looked on as adultery, but they were still married nonetheless, and two years isn't all that long where he couldn't have done without it. So, did they, or didn't they? The h never asks and the H never tells.
The OW attempts to make the h think there's still something going on (she gives the h the H's money clip that she claims he left in her apartment the last time he spent the night), and this causes a fight between the H and h, but it's left hanging. He tells her later that the OW lied, and starts to explain, but the h cuts him off and says it doesn't matter. So, how did the OW get the H's money clip? You never find out.
The h hadn't been interested in any man or any dating during their time apart, despite her boss at the jewelry store (more villain than OM, as the story progresses) making it clear he was interested. And that's another thing: at one point the h tells the H she was grateful to her boss for helping her out when she really needed it. I think she was implying that he gave her a start in the business at a time when she was unhappy and needed focus and something to fill the emptiness, but it was never gone into, how she met him, got started with the job, etc. She's just working there and doing well when the story starts.
And the whole spying thing really fell flat. The H wanted the h to spy on the OM to find out if he's illegally smuggling diamonds to finance a business deal that will affect the H. It sounds like page turning stuff, but it was more talked about than acted on, and when it was, the whole thing ended almost as soon as it started, and that was a disappointment.
One thing that didn't disappoint me was the h finding out she's pregnant again and (despite how bad things looked at the time) deciding to stay with the H and tell him about the baby, because the baby was entitled to a life with both parents. She told herself that even if he didn't love her, he could love and be a good father to their baby.
HALLELUJAH!! For once, a pregnant h who thinks of her baby rather than herself! I get so sick of those selfish ones with the "if he doesn't want me then he can't have the baby" attitude! Even if a person is a bad spouse, they can still be a good parent.
This story had too many weak points and they overshadowed the good ones. But the jewelry stuff was entertaining.

synopsis: paige wanted to save her brother, so she contacted her ex-husband. the only way that he agreed to help was if she moved in with him and resumed their relationship.
what i liked: nothing.
what i didn't like: the main characters were so unsympathetic, i was really hoping that they would end up alone and bitter. the whining, the wishy-washy, pretty much everything.
