I think I've mostly lost interest in this series. If I preordered the next book already, I will read it, but much like Ring's Battle Mage Farmer, we've gotten to a point where conflict feels contrived when our main character, Thorn, is so overly powerful. Yet, on the same token, he also isn't powerful enough to take on what's ahead, so he has to struggle through more and more complex and contrived conflicts for the sake of his growth.

And with such a focus, there is little depth in the books now. To be sure, most of Ring's novels would never qualify as 'deep' books, but there is usually more to them than the path we are on right now. When we reconnected with a few people, I could barely remember them since we haven't had many characters on the scene except for surface level conversations (and mostly about tactics). I guess what I am getting at is that almost all of Thorn's allies seem like automatons. They seem both fungible and lifeless.

Despite my rather critical review, I want to point out potential biases in my thoughts. The first is that I am hooked on another series and I am both comparing this book to that one; and I am eager to return back, so I think that is impacting me (and yes, I probably should not take the sojourns away since I seem to regret them). Second, among all the Ring novels I have read, I will confess I just can't even remember what happened in the last book in this series. It has been some time and my brain deleted those memories to clear up space. You might feel differently about this book than me for those reasons alone.

This was my favorite Tower book in a while though my review may not seem like it. My biggest critique with this specific story is the way Thorns power fluctuates throughout the book as it is completely inconsistent and distracting (which is the same for the rest of the books in this series.)

Ignoring the inconsistency’s though it seems like there is a focused road map for the completion of Thorns story which is exciting to see because up until this point it feels like the author has been jumping all over the place. Though each of the stories has been enjoyable the previous books feel pretty inconsequential when the entire story line is immediately invalidated as the author completely changes the main narrative. I think this is simply the author having to many good story ideas and wanting to tell them but unfortunately this leads to none of them being done well or told in full.

Though the books have some deficiencies and the overall road map is haphazard at best I have really enjoyed Thorns adventures. I hope the author plans the rest of the series to recover the weakness/shortfalls of the Tower series and give a great adventure starting in Nova Terra the end it deserves.

Finally, I don’t think it would be the worst idea for some major characters to be defeated/die. The story needs some stakes and this will shake the predictability of knowing Thorn plus teams overcomes all odds in the last 15 pages every single time with no variation in outcome.

✦ Book Review: Marauder (Tower #8) by Seth Ring
✧ ᴛʜᴀɴᴋ ʏᴏᴜ ꜰᴏʀ ᴛʜᴇ ꜰʀᴇᴇ ʙᴏᴏᴋ, @Blackstone SethRing #TowerSeries
➤ 𝚂𝚈𝙽𝙾𝙿𝚂𝙸𝚂
Thorn finds himself framed and hunted by the Adventurer’s Guild after a reckless move lands him on the wrong side of the Tower’s merchant cartels. With a young woman and an old sailor by his side, his only option is to go rogue, turning pirate-hunter in a desperate gamble to reclaim his freedom and shift the game on his terms. The eighth instalment in the Tower series ramps up the stakes, seeing Thorn dive deeper into the underbelly of the Tower’s politics, power plays and alliances.
➤ 𝚃𝙷𝙾𝚄𝙶𝚃𝚂
For fans of game-lit and LitRPG this book hits many of the right notes: relentless advancement, an expanding cast of allies, and bold tactical gambits. Ring shows his genre chops with a premise that balances raw action with progression drama. However, if you’re not already invested in the Tower universe you might find this entry dense or overstuffed, the world is brimming with systems and references that lean heavily on prior context. It’s a high-octane power fantasy with plenty of momentum, but it lacks much introspection or fresh emotional depth outside the mechanics of climb and conquest. If you’re here for progression and strategy, you’ll likely enjoy it. If you crave character evolution or thematic subtlety, it may feel more functional than memorable.

Ok, but meandering, no consistency

So the book is ok, but I’m getting really tired of the meandering nature. The enemies keep changing / getting added. Enemies also never die / keep coming back. He finally gets to the tower, after 7 books, but not really because at the end (spoilers). I’m also really frustrated with how he keeps getting more power, but he keeps punching things. He’s aTitan with control over a ton of stuff, but he ALWAYS PUNCHES THINGS. He doesn’t use anything he crafts in battle (punches and uses manure armor). He rarely uses magic in big battles. Also, I’m tired of new team members and not enough time with his usual crew … like I’d LOVE more time with him and Velin.

I really like the story and the author … read all of Battlemage Farmer, read all 10 books of Titan series, and all 8 of these books … but this is getting ridiculous and I don’t know if I’ll continue the series. The last paragraph, and what it implies, really annoyed me … I mean seriously, you’re doing THAT again? Even the character expressed annoyance :/

*I received this audiobook from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest feedback. My opinions are my own.*
I think this was a good installment of The Tower/Nova Terra series, and I think it was the most interesting of the last few books. The characters are (for the most part) one of the stronger areas, with my only real complaint in recent books would be that I would like for Thorn to experience more actual threats to him and his team. Obviously he is and will always be an overpowered protagonist by nature, but I would like some enemies that actually pose a threat.
As always Eric Jason Martin’s narration is excellent and I cannot imagine this series as an audiobook without him reading it.

Pirates and cool ships.

Book 8 of the Tower series. This one shows us just how far Thorn and his guild still have to go. You’d think going from the 25th floor to the 10th would be a breeze, but nothing is ever easy and the challenges just get harder and harder for the young titan. I really liked his breakthrough in this one as well to see old familiar faces and some new ones. This part of the series looks like we could ramp up to over 100 books. At least I’m hoping so. Still loving the series.

As someone who thinks video games are cool but has zero hand eye coordination I feel like Seth Ring gets me because his books feel like playing the most epic video game. This story/series is interesting, detail fueled, and character driven. I don’t know how he comes up with such crazy good ideas but this book was another winner for me. The narrator did a wonderful job with this story. The voice acting and pacing was great and the editing was perfect.

I really like the story

Unfortunately I don't like the use of the word anyways. I think it makes the author seem ignorant and uneducated I know that the word is in the dictionary now it is still slang. It makes me want to erase everything you have ever written just so it doesn't have a negative effect on Literature. I also know that I don't have the power to anything except comment about it

A Worthy Book 8

If you've already gotten this far in the series? Keep going!

If you're new here, start with the Nova Terra books and CATCH UP! You've got a long way to go and one hell of a ride to ride!

I summary, more Thorn BEING Thorn, learning, growing, and helping others along the way.

Titan continues to progress through the Tower with his team. They must take and hold the tenth floor.

Meanwhile, Titan's archenemy Terminus, wishes to end all existence.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others. Not only is Titan superpowerful, but so are his friends. The battles are enjoyable, but there isn't much doubt about the outcome.

Where is this story going? I guess I've failed it as I don't remember why Thorn is at and going through the tower. It's just one level a story and minus the OG characters without replacing them so the series feels less than it once was. I somewhat feel the same on BMF so maybe it's just where he's at in writing? I dunno, I got through this but don't have much positive to say on it.

More OP shenanigans

Alternate universe, LitRPG, magitech multiverse, hero's journey

Thorn again puts off his commitment to help the beast god Aspects and plays around on level 10 of the Tower, and discovers a cult, slavers, and more. Above average editing. Apparently, there will be more books in this story arc.

great then Meh!

I hated this book from the last 3 chapters. Boring, annoying, sometimes characters just need to die because they’re annoying and spoiling.

Other than that, i enjoyed most of it

Very exciting!

I was really concerned about the power creep that can happen in these kinds of stories, but Seth has handled it masterfully. This was a great continuation. Thorn got into trouble, Thorn got out of trouble, and then Trouble© found him.

A good read from start to finish

I was waiting for this book with baited breath. It delivers. Right up until the end. And to quote thorn. "Oh come on!" I'll be waiting patiently for the next one. Well played Seth!

Tower Book 8

A continuation of the other books. Thorn always gets in trouble but continuously gets itself out of trouble I find it interesting how he enjoys each conflict and now that he's gone to the next stage in his build let's see how interested it gets.

Seth ring is as good as usual!

Thorn got stronger again. Roland and Oberlin are absolute monsters. The whole gang is awesome as usual. Great next step to the tower climbing. Keep doing what your doing, Seth Ring.

More fun with the Titan

Yep, Thorn is back and making trouble for anytime who stands in his way. This was a nice return to what felt more like a classic Thorn adventure. Looking forward to the next book!

Cliffhanger- is why my rating is only 4 stars

Good continuation, for some reason I thought this was the last book. Glad to realise I was wrong.

Looking forward to the next one,
