Cruel Debts

Rate this book
We made our fallen brother a promise. His sister is determined to help us break it.

The Gunners were as tight-knit a unit as you would ever find–we’d been to war together, both overseas and in the streets. Our promise to our fallen fourth was that we’d watch over his sister, Trinity. None of us knew how hard it was to hold onto a free spirit like her. She did what she wanted, when she wanted, with whomever she wanted.
And what she wanted, now, was us.

They refuse to touch me because of my brother. But nobody’s stopping me from touching them.

My brother’s friends always kept a close eye on me growing up. Now, they’re sworn to protect me, a promise they made to him before he died, or so I was told. But I’ve always wanted what I couldn’t have, and now that they’re off-limits, I’m working overtime trying to show them why, sometimes, promises are made to be broken. The Gunners can’t resist me forever–I always get my way in the end.
Who wants an apple off the ground, when you can pick forbidden fruit from the tree?

Heleva Risque is not afraid to get her hands dirty, and neither are the heroes she writes. From complete alphaholes to grumpy, brooding bad boys, and everything in between, her heroes are walking red flags and trauma-filled shells of their former selves, but by the end of each story, not only will you want to cry for these wounded, unhinged men, but you'll be crawling into their beds, begging to be their good girls.
And you'll love every minute of it.
Ms. Risque has several series on the docket, including her leading mafia romance series, the Khula City Crime Syndicate, and a standalone, one-shot romance so dark, so filthy, so sinful, that you'll need the confessional on Sunday to cleanse your soul.
If you've got a kindle reads list that would make conversations at Thanksgiving dinner awkward, you're in the right place.

We are back with the Guild. The group that started it all. The Gunners were Asher, Hawke and Liam. They knew each other from the miliary. They were missing one Keehn McCoy. He was supposed to be with them but is assumed dead when they run across a detective using his identity. The Gunners keep fake Keehn's secret and he helps them whenever they need it. Give and take at its finest. The Gunners are trying to take down a trafficking ring. The request came in and Lily St. Clair, the leader of the Guild, assigned it to her best team. Liam gets a call from Keehn's mother. They need their help to find Trinity, Keehn's sister. While all of that is going on, Lily gets another job. She sends the guys looking for an artist that has went missing. Somehow, someway, the artist that they are looking for turns out to be Trinity McCoy. Killed two birds with one stone.

Now they just have to keep her safe. Trinity is still set on looking for Keehn. She refuses to accept that he is dead until she finds proof. The Gunners have to keep Trinity under lock and key and Trinity is itching to get out. The tension is off the charts. Trinity has always wanted to be with with all of her brother's best friends. Not just one. Despite all that is going on, this group has to navigate all the feelings they have about each other and keep Trinity safe. It is exciting to see the the four-way push and pull they have going on. Who will fall first? Trinity is grown now. What's stopping them? Let me tell you. This description does not do this book justice. There is still so much going on. Will they find Keehn? Is he still alive? Can they keep Trinity safe without giving into the feelings they all have? Like I said, a lot going on. Ms. Risque does it again. She gives readers a book we can sink into and is so entertaining that we can't put it down.

I loved this one most out of all the Guild books. Surgeon has turned up in the others, pulling bullets and patching wounds, but Asher is very different than his Surgeon persona.
This book had everything I love, forced proximity, ex-military men who aren’t big on emotions, best friends little sister, a mystery and touch her and 💀. I’m in heaven!
Trinity is all sass, a girl who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to fight for it. The sparks, especially between her and Liam could have set the entire Guild ablaze, and boy did he make her wait!
I laughed and got choked up on emotion at the ending, and now can we please, please, please have a Keehn story.

Let me start by saying that I love the Killers of Port Wylde series, but because I had a few minor issues with Cruel Debts, I couldn't rate it as highly as the first two books. What I love about this book is Trinity with her bold, sassy attitude and unwavering determination to make her brother's three best friends hers while solving her brother's disappearance and possible death when no one else wants to or will; said three (dangerous, sexy) best friends, Asher, Hawke, and Liam, with their admirable commitment to ending the horrific human trafficking in their city and different levels of resistance to Trinity's feminine wiles; learning more about badass Lilly St. Clair and her secretive ex-husband; and all the angst, humor, intrigue, steam, and violence Heleva features in all her books.

What I don't love about Cruel Debts is the lack of detail and the pacing; while I was reading, some scenes and situations seemed to drag on (e.g., Liam's attitude toward and treatment of Trinity), while others felt rushed or glossed over (e.g., the ending). I, for one, would have liked to learn more about the Gunners' backgrounds and friendships with Keehn, their true feelings for and reasons for resisting Trinity, and what exactly they were doing to fulfill their contract with Lilly. I feel like I was told more than I was shown, which left me wanting more because I want to know all these characters as well as possible. (I also wish this book were a little darker, as it's tamer than both Cruel Lies and Cruel Games, but that didn't affect my rating.)

That said, I absolutely adore how Asher, Hawke, and Liam fall fast and hard for Trinity even when they think it's wrong and even though they have a hard time showing it (some more than others). That girl deserves to choose her life and men who will choose and love her, and the Gunners deserve to be loved for who they are, too. I also loved "watching" them all grow closer and closer throughout the book. Their banter was witty, and their chemistry was sizzling.

Overall, Cruel Debts is a fun and satisfying why choose romance with dark themes and likable, relatable characters. I would love for Heleva to revisit this series in the future to show us Trinity, Asher, Hawke, and Liam's life in the Guild and evolving relationships with the other members or even write another book about a new crew (because I don't want to let this series go).

“Because now that Asher had fallen, now that he was mine, I didn’t plan to let him go.”

This maybe my favourite of the series? I loved the dynamics between this group as well as getting to see snippets of the neon dogs and skeleton crew. As well as much more from Lilly.

I loved how Trinity wasn’t like the other girls in this series, similar in the way she was head strong and stubborn, but different in the fact she didn’t want to become a killer she just wanted her men. I loved how they had a history and how she was their missing best friends little sister. She was so ferocious in the need to find her brother, I loved how adamant she was about finding him and how she just wouldn’t give up no matter how much trouble it caused her. She has such a way of getting them each wrapped around her finger exactly how she wants.

I loved the way they found out the girl they are protecting is none other than their missing best friend’s sister. And the order in which they all break is perfect. Even when they repeatedly tell themselves she’s off limits.

“Their show of dominance was attractive, the protective manner in which they stalked their claim had me thinking of other ways they could claim and dominate me, but I was mad still dammit.”

Asher, Surgeon, is hooked before he even knows who she is. He’s obsessed and I love how he is with her. After seeing glimpses of him in past books, more than the other do, I expected him to be a lot more no nonsense instead he was an utter melted sweetheart once he gave in.

Hawke, Ghost, is erratic. I love how he’s so adamant he hates her treats her like he hates her even when he snaps and breaks for her. Only for him to become the biggest softy for her, with only a little undertone of hatred. I love how he helped her with her brother. They’d all given up yet the second she started asking questions he was the one that went to try find answers.

Liam, Sentry, was a tough one. He was so obsessed with her from the start but he was so adamant that he was sticking to the honor code and not going near her. But when he breaks, saves her, then has her, god it’s perfect. He tries to hate her but it doesn’t work. And the way she plays him is just perfect.

I’m honestly hoping for more from Lilly St Clair and the Keehns, I need to see what more comes from that story line and I don’t think I’m ready to say goodbye to Porte Wilde.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

⚠️‼️ READ CONTENT WARNINGS BEFORE GETTING INTO THIS BOOK‼️⚠️ or if you’re like me and don’t read them 👀
THIS IS A DARK ROMANCE 🛐

❤️‍🩹We follow trinity’s story where she’s trying to find her “dead”brother and why the “” ? Because she didn’t believe he was dead, he couldn’t be gone like that and without telling her anything and leaving everything behind, she wanted her brother back, even if that means she would start working on a club as a body painter and even if she had to leave her parents and wealth behind, the only one she loved was gone and she needed him back to her.

🖤 Then we have Liam, Hawke, and Asher, the ex military on the guild, they were the first ones to join, and the most powerful ones, because of their background in the military. They had one job that St. Clair gave to them, that was get a network of traffic*ers and young women were disappearing, but then they had one other job over the one they already had, and that’s looking out for a girl that got involved in this network… They had a blood oath with their best friend that disappeared, to look out for her sister when he wasn’t there anymore to protect her… the day he disappeared they didn’t look for him.. they thought he was gone… but then her best friend sister suddenly show up on their door and their peace was gone👀

I loved their relationship, and the growth on the characters towards Trinity, she was a strong woman and everyone thought she wasn’t, she was there to prove them all wrong and that she can survive by herself, well also by the help of three of the guild members 🖤 I loved how their feelings towards Trinity were developing little by little until they couldn’t deny and keep it a secret anymore, they needed each other, and destiny brought them together again 🤍

HELEVA YOU DID IT AGAIN, YOU GOT MY HEART AND MY SOUL 🛐 I LOVE THIS SERIES AND I LOVED THESE CHARACTERS😭😍

Whew, what a story! Trinity knows deep in her heart that her brother, Keehn, is not dead and she will do whatever it takes to find him. She finds herself in some bad situations and guarded by his 3 best friends: Asher, Hawke, and Liam.

Trinity is a spoiled heiress brat. But, she is also very stubborn and she is not going to give up on her brother. This gets her put into danger several times. It also gets her put into hiding and being guarded by her brother’s best friends and 3 men she has had crushes on since she was younger and now she wants them even more.

Asher (Surgeon) has been obsessed and in love with her for a long time. He is putty in her hands and gives in before anyone else. He has a hard time telling her no. He is such a dang sweetheart too.

Hawke (Ghost) declares that he hates her and treats her as such. But when he finally breaks for her, that soft side for her comes out and his protective side. When he cooks for her and teaches her how to cook, omg..swoon!

Liam (Sentry) he was gone for her, but he refused to break the honor code for her. He was the last one to crack. But when he does and he saves her and he truly has her and gives in, that passion and connection that they have finally comes out.

They all try to resist her, but it is impossible. The chemistry is too intense. They are pulled to her, they want to protect her and more than just a promise and code to her brother. And once they get a taste, it’s so much more. And the twists…OMGGGGGG!!!!! I was so freaking mad at a few of them. The emotions run wild in this book. It’s full of chemistry, tension, suspense, twists, a bit of shock, and a lot of spice.

I love The Gunners! Ok, I also loved the Skeleton Crew and the Neon Dogs, but I love these guys possibly even more than the other crews! Let’s take three badass military guys, one badass female, a missing brother, a trafficking ring, and some cold cases, throw them into a blender and then spike it with whiskey and enjoy the smooth burn all the way down. Cruel Debts made me wish I had an older brother just so I could also have my older brother’s hot best friends as well as I have the sass and snark to almost match Trinity. That chick is hell on wheels with the skills and talents to back it all up. Who else could be ballsy enough to be a body painter at a sex club and try to make the unimpressive actually look appealing? True, she may be really lacking in survival instincts when her antsy tendencies kick in or when she is running off of spite and venom but I think all of ours would be when we have a Surgeon, a Sentry, and a Ghost at our backs. With the twists and turns the case takes with her missing brother, even I couldn’t predict where it was headed and the way things ended with the epilogue, I’m dying to see what we see next coming out of Port Wylde in the future. Sure the trilogy is complete, doesn’t mean there isn’t room for more books in this same universe… I for one am all on board for that!!

Well I blew through this one in 24hrs! I absolutely love all these lil gangs inside the guild! The gunners are basically the OG group out of all of them. When they are contracted to protect a girl the last thing they were expecting or wanting was it to be their dead best friend’s little sister. She didn’t belong in that city and didn’t belong with them. But Trinity isn’t that cute little girl anymore she’s grown up and doesn’t want anything to do with her parents richy rich lifestyle that will just lead her to be wed to some stuck up prick that will have a side piece while she’s barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

She would rather have 3 men that swore to protect her if anything happened to her brother. Said brother that she’s convinced isn’t dead. On a mission to find him shes putting her life in risk and smack in the middle of the Gunners other contract…a human trafficking ring!

I’m glad the Lilly & her ex husband story line finally came to the front and seems settled. She’s a bad bitch but deserves to be happy at the end of the day.

Tanner.. will he get a book? I always wonder when they name drop ppl at the end 🤣

This was a slow burn for me cause these guys had restraint!!

I have been looking forward to Cruel Debts ever since finishing the Neon Dogs story. I was not disappointed and loved everything about this book! Trinity and the guys were an explosive combination and I loved all the tension and angst.

I really liked Trinity. She was tough and quite resilient. I loved that she never gave up on her mission even when things seemed to really not go her way. She was fiesty and had a fun playful personality.

Asher, Liam, and Hawke were all great in their own way. I think this is the first time I've actually liked all the guys equally and not had a clear favorite. They all added something special to the story and had their own unique connection with Trinity. I loved the military aspect of their relationship with each other and how well they worked as a team. They were a fun group of guys.

This was an exciting and sometimes exhilarating story with the surprises mixed in. The characters were all great and it was delightful getting to see some past characters from the series. The writing was engaging and kept me entertained all the way through. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it!!

ARC Review:

5/5⭐️, 2.5/5🌶️

-Three Men, Three kinks
-First Person POV: Multi
-Enemies to Lovers to Soulmates
-Age Gap
-Brothers Best Friends

Let me just say, if I didn’t have adult things to do(work and such) I would’ve had this done in less than a day😂 I was absolutely hooked. Trinity, Liam, Hawke and Asher are quite the 4. I loved Trinity from the beginning. She’s got the right amount of spunk and knows how to hold her own, no matter what situation she’s put in to. I didn’t love the guys at the start, but eventually I warmed up to the idea of them. You can tell how much they care about Trinity. No matter what.

I can’t believe this has wrapped up the Kíllers of Port Wylde series. I loved the whole series but I think this was my favourite. Heleva Risque has done a fantastic job with all of them. (Like normal😂) The twists and turns integrated throughout just keep you on your toes and it’s lovely. You never know what’s going to be thrown at you next.

Don’t forget to check the Tw’s prior to picking this one up.
Otherwise I highly recommend!

Another must read from this twisty world!!

I absolutely devoured this book! It was dark, twisty and oh so spicy with a huge twist/HEA! Trinity is a tornado of an FMC, meaning she's a force of nature! She's going to follow her own intuition and not be forced to believe anything else. She's on a search for her missing brother, despite the mass belief that he's gone. Instead she's found by Asher, Liam and Hawke, her brothers childhood besties. They once swore an oath to protect her but she's not the same little girl they remember. Everyone is grown now, and old little flames are now raging infernos! I loved how they fought they're feelings! This was a delicious forbidden romance/brothers best friend/ best friends little sister. But my absolute favorite is how Trinity is true to herself. She's unafraid, bold, feisty and will not stop until she reaches her goal. She's constantly being told one thing, and will not change course because of her own intuition. I loved her, truly my favorite type of FMC!
And I can't wait to see what's next in this world!!

Can’t believe this is the final book in the Guild series. I’ve truly loved every book and am sad to see it end.

As expected, this book drew me in and wouldn’t let me go. Trinity, Asher, Liam, and Hawke had me in a chokehold. I was so excited to learn more about the Gunners, and I was not disappointed.

Trinity was a riot. She had my side hurting so many times from laughing. Spoiled, rich, stubborn and determined to get her way, yet extremely loyal and tenacious as well. I loved her so much, even when her rash decisions got her into trouble. She’s definitely the kind of person you would want in your corner. And I loved her chemistry with the guys.

Hawke was probably my favorite, which surprised me. Asher was adorable and almost puppy like—despite the whole profession killer thing. And Liam gave me whiplash, but I still loved him. All of them were perfect for Trinity, and each gave her something she needed.

I got an advanced copy and this is my voluntary review.

Trinity is straight up unstoppable bold, flirty, and completely magnetic. The Gunners are supposed to be keeping her safe, but she’s constantly pushing limits, teasing them, and making them question everything they thought they knew. Watching all of that unfold is hilarious, sexy, and swoony all at once. The tension between them is off the charts, and the chemistry is just electric I could not put this down.

The story has everything you could want: suspense, action, emotional highs and lows, and heat that doesn’t let up for a second. Trinity is smart, fearless, and unapologetically herself, while the Gunners are protective, broody, and total heart eyes material. Seeing them navigate their feelings, their pasts, and trying to keep her safe is messy, chaotic, and completely entertaining. Honestly, this book pulls you in from the first page and keeps you rooting for all of them the entire time. I laughed, swooned, and had my heart racing all at once it’s seriously addictive.

Such Delicious Angst!

Cruel Debts is the fourth book in The Killers of Port Wylde series. I highly recommend starting this series from the beginning with Cruel Vows.

Cruel Debts is a satisfying final book in this dark series. I loved getting to better know these characters that have teased us a little throughout the series. Every dark and morally gray character in The Killers of Port Wylde series will grab your attention and not let go and we defiantly got little visits from many of the past characters in the series here in Cruel Debts. There were lots of secrets uncovered, dangerous situations and a bit of spice.

I am looking forward to the new series, Superstars of Nocturna Beach, that takes place in this same treacherous world and in the meantime I recommend checking out Heleva Risque’s completed Queens of Khula City series which also shares this same world!

The Gunners get put on a job, a protection one. Protecting a girl, who was a lot closer to the darkness than she needed to be. Her boss wanted to make sure that she didn't fall into it. Which is where the Gunners came in. They were needed to protect her and keep her from being taken and sold.

Prior to this contract they had been working on getting information to take down a large human trafficking ring, one that their best friend's little sister had been far too close to. Trinity didn't notice the pure danger she was in until it was too late. By then, being stuck with Asher, Hawke and Liam her old school girl crush of the three of them came back in full force. Not that it had ever truly left her.

There are a few shocking turn of events that happen during this, that you wouldn't ever expect. So, buckle up for the ride!

The Gunners have always intrigued me ever since I got the first glimpse of them in an earlier book so was excited to finally get their book! Trinity is another of the author's strong women who know what they want and are not afraid to go after it...and she wants to find out what happened with her brother. The Gunners were his best friends and they promised to take care of her if anything happened to them. Loved how the boys dealt with her individually and as a group. There are parts of the book I won't mention because it's too plot specific but will say Ms Risque made my jaw drop.

Really hate that this storyline is done but hope they makes appearances in other books in the author's universe.

***ARC REVIEW***

I’ve been looking forward to the Gunners book since the beginning. They were always the most intriguing group of the series for me. Their dynamic, the loyalty, the tension it all just pulled me in.

Trinity and the guys had such a fun, intense chemistry. The push and pull between them kept things interesting, and I loved how bold and unpredictable she was. I also really enjoyed getting those little glimpses of past favorites throughout the book. But if I’m being honest, I did feel like the overall plot followed a familiar pattern. Each book kind of had the same structure with just a few twists here and there. I wish there had been a bit more variety in the storytelling to make each book feel more distinct. Overall I still enjoyed it and I’m sad this series is over.

Cruel Debts is the 4th book in the Killers of Port Wylde series. Trinity is on a mission to find her brother since everyone else has given up on him still being alive. Her leads take her to Port Wylde. After an unfortunately event, Trinity finds herself at the mercy of the last 3 people she would have expected - Asher, Liam and Hawke, her brother’s three best friends. The guys are not as nice as they used to be and Trinity doesn’t understand why, at least when it comes to Asher and Liam. Determined to get what she wants, Trinity is fighting more than just the path to find her brother. Will Trinity find her brother? Will a childhood crush turn into something more? Will Asher, Liam and Hawke be able to overcome their guilt? Fantastic addition and I can’t wait to see what comes next!!!

Brother's best friends, dark romance, why choose, bodyguards/protectors, and much more!!
This book had me hooked from the first chapter!
It was filled with secrets, danger, suspense, drama, sexual tension, and spice.

I loved Trinity. She was confident, has the right amount of sass, and determined.
I liked that she owned who she was.

Asher, Liam, and Hawke... I liked each of them, but Asher was probably my favorite.
I loved seeing the relationship change and grow between Trinity and each guy. Of course, some took a little longer than others. Regardless, Trinity and the guys fit so well together.
I loved it!

Loved this! It's Trinity & her guys' story & it was awesome! I hate seeing the end of this series, but I loved reading about the OG group of the Guild! She's looking for her brother, he's been missing for a long time & unfortunately she runs into some trouble; & ends up escaping by herself. She goes back to her work after being missing for a while & her boss calls in some bodyguards for her. Little does she know, but they all know each other & have for a long time. The attraction between them all has been there forever & it was awesome seeing them give into it. The spice was fantastic & I loved the story! Please keep in mind, this isn't an easy read! Highly recommend this series & author!

Back at the Guild, the psychopathic and possibly insane people who work for St. Clair are just as intriguing as before—perhaps even more so.

The Gunners are an interesting group. There’s no Jackal on a leash this time, but there are three males who seem completely oblivious to the McCoy siblings.

Trinity isn't as unhinged as the last two characters, but I must admit, she managed to outsmart the Gunners, which I found highly entertaining.

The storyline is excellent, and the characters are well-developed, keeping me engaged and eager to read more. There are enough twists to keep me guessing, and that ending? I definitely want more! I'm really enjoying this series.

Downright hooked! From the very first page, this book had me in its grip.

The moment she lands herself in trouble, I was all in. Her determination to find her brother—despite everyone telling her to just let it go—made me love her even more. And then cue her brother’s best friends (who she’s known forever) stepping into the picture and… omg. 🔥 The tension, the heat, the need between them was off the charts.

This one is by far my favorite in the series. The passion, the danger, the twists—I couldn’t stop turning the pages. I can only hope we get one more, because I am not ready to say goodbye to this world!

Searching for her brother

Trinity has always wanted her brothers buddies but they made a promise to her brother that she is determined to make them break. Her first reconnection with them neither of them even know and it was hot.

This story is filled with questions and wondering who the bad guy(s) are. Also the interesting revelation about the detective.

I absolutely loved getting to know the Gunners. We have seen the Surgeon through all the other books but now we actually get the know him and he is very different than I expected. This book is filled with sexual tension and when it breaks it's absolutely hot.

Cruel Debts is book four of the Killers of Port Wylde Series.

Trinity has one goal in mind - to find out what happened to her brother. Along the way she meets all of the guys and finds out they are there to protect her from the dangers she now has due to her search for her brother. The guys fight their feelings for her as they promised her brother that they would protect her always. She wants them all but they all fight against her before they all finally cave. Trinity is someone who gets what she wants.

There is a lot of suspense and mystery involved with this story. Good read.

Another great addition to the Killers Of Port Wylde. We are finally getting to know the Gunners, having met them in the previous books. Another three unhinged men and a strong FMC to give them a run for their money. Being their best friend's sister she is automatically off limits, but she is not happy with that arrangement. Especially when she is forced to live with them. I really enjoyed the banter between her and the men esp Hawke, he was the most intense in the beginning. I look forward to reading more from Heleva Risque.
