A Duke at Midnight: A Historical Regency Romance

Rate this book
It’s close to midnight when Rosalie, a seamstress of impeccable reputation, sets out to deliver an eagerly awaited bodice. A simple errand, until she steps into the wrong room.

Instead of her client, she finds a man. A very large, very brooding, and very enticing man. Before she can even protest, she tumbles into his arms. And most scandalously, into his bed. How on earth did she end up there?

What she does not yet this is the Duke of Blackbourne, London’s most insufferable, detestable, and inconveniently handsome rogue.

By morning, rumors swirl, scandal brews, and Rosalie’s once-loyal clients vanish like mist.

At the height of her misfortune, he returns. The Duke. The… scoundrel! The cause of all her troubles who still makes her knees weak.

But not to apologize. Not to explain. No, the Duke has something far more outrageous in

Marriage. He needs a son. Immediately.

Delightful, humorous, and utterly seductive. A virtuous seamstress and a notorious Duke – can that possibly end well? A standalone novel with a guaranteed happy ending by USA Today bestselling author Jenny Foster writing as Emmi West. For adult readers only.

To put it bluntly, this book was was sixty-seven chapters of absolute absurdity. To be fair, the chapters were short (in fact I feel several of them could have either been combined into other chapters or removed entirely and it wouldn't have changed the plot at all).

First we have Rosalie, who really should have known better than to be delivering a corset to a courtesan at midnight. And if she were so dumb to do it herself, then she should have immediately declared her purpose to the (blind and just how did that work anyway) doorman so that he could have rung for someone to come and collect it for her. But she didn't, and then to make matters worse she didn't push the Duke away when he accosted her in the bedroom, nor did she make it clear that she was not who he thought she was. So when she was found out, she really had no one to blame but herself.

Then we have the Duke, who despite having been staying in London since his return somehow didn't hear the rumor that he had killed his best friend? Seriously? He claims that he hadn't heard it because "everyone who knew him understood the absurdity of this claim", but wouldn't that be more of a reason for them to oh I don't know, let their friend know these horrible accusations are being said against him?

Of course, they decide the best thing for the both of them would be to marry. For purely selfish reasons of course. The Duke wants an heir (sooner rather than later thank you very much), and Rosalie wants to be able to look down on her former clients that have now snubbed her for what she did. Actually, she wants to protection of his name so she doesn't have to worry about losing her home and business since none of the ladies of the ton want to associate with her anymore, but I digress. The main stipulation the Duke places on her is that she will not fall in love with him, nor will he ever love her. In fact, if she does develop feelings for him and he finds out, he will move her poste haste into separate living accommodations, or as he so eloquently puts it "an immediate separation of bed and board." Now while Rosalie isn't worried about falling in love with this ogre of a man, she does fret to herself about who she will be able to give her love to if not her husband. Oh.... I don't know madam. Your future CHILDREN maybe? Geeze.

What follows is a back and forth that goes exactly how you would expect. They have sex. Rosalie finds herself falling in love with her husband despite trying hard not to. The Duke, and now that I'm thinking about it does he have a name? I honestly don't think he was referred to as anything other than the Duke, Duke, my dear boy, or Blackbourne. Even his chapters are titled Blackbourne and not his given name. Errrr, where was I? Oh yeah. The Duke is off trying to solve the mystery of who killed his friend. Which honestly really wasn't much of a mystery at all if we're being honest.

Some random filler stuff happens, apparently the Dowager Duchess (who is the Duke's GRANDMOTHER by the way), holds secret meetings where she and her friends learn how to defend themselves which Rosalie finds out about and joins. Rosalie learns how to make snaps (although she calls them buttons that come apart and can be rejoined), and sews pants for the ladies to wear during practice. She gets kidnapped, the Duke rescues her, they admit their love for one another and they live happily ever after.

All in all, it wasn't the worst way to spend my time, but I doubt I will be seeking this author out anytime soon.

Not My Favorite . . .

Quite late in the evening, seamstress Rosalie Wayfield heads off to deliver a bodice to her customer, Lady Rose. She is directed by a blind doorman pointing up the stairs and holding out 3 fingers, so she assumed she was to go up 3 floors without an escort. But when she enters, the room’s occupant is a man, she finds herself in his arms and his bed, having no idea what is going on! The Duke of Blackbourne, expecting another “type” of woman to visit him, takes full advantage of Rosalie’s silence as the two get down to “business”. Unfortunately, it does not take long at all for the rumors to start about them and work up quickly to a delightful full-blown scandal which will, of course, ruin Rosalie’s business… much to her surprise?? And it gets worse as the troublesome Duke returns to propose marriage!!! Not for love but because he needs a son right away. Is she allowed to say no? Or will she let herself be used yet again by the rogue since she no longer has a job to return to?

This was not a “feel good” book and not at all what I expected when anticipating a “love story”. For me, it was that I didn’t build up respect or rapport with the characters to the point that they mattered to me. Rather than sympathy, I saw foolishness. Rosalie should have guarded her reputation rather than silently go along with the interesting man she encountered. I fully realize the women always get the worst of any scandal, no matter who was at fault, and usually it is not justified in any way (such as by walking into an “empty” room and not seeing someone else in the room yet being immediately labeled for inappropriate behavior even if nothing at all had occurred). Anyway, their own scenario was not amusing to me and his marriage proposal was an insult. So glad I never lived in those times!

I enjoyed this riveting strangers to lovers romance with its added marriage of convenience trope and gothic vibes. The plot is well written and filled with mystery, secrets, angst, suspense, danger, twists and steamy love scenes. Hudson and Rosalie are very likable characters with sizzling chemistry between them. There are a few secondary characters that I really liked and who made me smile with their secret hobby (the Dowager Duchess and her friends) and a heartwarming second romance.

One night, widowed seamstress Rosalie Wayfield delivers an item of clothing she has made to her customer and is mistaken for the famous courtesan by a stranger in her house. The two spend a passionate night together and then go their separate ways, but Rosalie discovers by chance that the stranger is the scandal-ridden Duke of Blackbourne, who is rumoured to have murdered his best friend.
Hudson Somersault, the Duke of Blackbourne, has just returned from a diplomatic mission on the continent and wants to spend a night with a courtesan recommended to him. Instead, he has a passionate tryst with a stranger who, as it turns out, is a dressmaker. When he goes to visit her in her shop, he witnesses her being shunned and bullied as a result of their night together. Since he needs an heir anyway, Hudson offers her a marriage of convenience with no prospect of future love and Rosalie reluctantly agrees, although the thought that he could be a murderer makes her shudder. Hudson tries to clear his name and find his friend's murderer, putting him and Rosalie in danger, for whom he feels more than he wanted to…

If you like captivating romance novels with suspense and spice, you are sure to enjoy this book!

Hudson, Duke of Blackbourne, meets Rosalie, disgraced former lady and widowed seamstress, in the dark of the night. A strange misunderstanding that Rosalie for some reason doesn't correct, ends in a night of passion. Though they are meant to be strangers, they each find out each other's identity almost immediately, which leads to a marriage proposal and a hasty wedding. Rosalie abandons her trade for a passionate but by dictate loveless marriage, while the Duke takes her to his estate because he wants heirs. In addition to this steamy if predictable romance, the Duke must also clear his name. It seems that rumors surfaced while he was away at war that he killed his best friend and his best friend's wife, while locking his grandmother away in a dungeon. An investigation commences, the tired tropes of "tell no one anything" and "I will not fall in love with you" grind this story forward, and the most interesting people in all of it are Rosalie and Blackbourne's grandmother, who form a comfortable friendship and secretly do feminist things. The story switches between the Duke and Rosalie's point of view.

I loved the backstory of Rosalie, and I didn't mind the whirlwind romance with the Duke. Their back-and-forth banter was endearing. I enjoyed the scenes at the Blackbourne estate, especially those that involved the Duke's spunky grandmother. The spicy scenes were quite steamy. The problem with the story was (1) constant repetition about how these two were not meant to be in love, and (2) serious flaws in the mystery / rumors swirling about Blackbourne and how that whole situation played out.

Opposites attract: Rosalie is a young widow who makes a living as a seamstress and corsetry maker. A true romantic at heart, she lets passion sweep her away in a chance encounter with an irresistible stranger… not knowing his name and station in life and keeping her own identity to herself, too. Unfortunately, her secret night of passion does not stay a secret, the man she gave herself to for one unforgettable night is a Duke with a very bad reputation, and clients and neighbors condemn her as a “loose woman”. With her business and very existence in shambles, Rosalie is forced to accept her “strangers” proposal of a marriage of convenience to produce an heir to his title, although she has meanwhile heard rumors about him that disturb her deeply. Can the man that so passionately and freely made love to her truly be the liar and coldhearted murderer as pictured by London’s High Society? With her heart full of doubts, Rosalie fights her attraction to the sensual duke, while he stubbornly tries to ignore the love that starts to blossom in his heart for his lovely wife-to-be. But both will discover, that their passion for each other is worth fighting for! The love story of the dangerous, seductive Duke and the strongwilled, independent widow is mesmerizing, charming, sensual and will make you laugh out loud, too… A great read and a story that will stay on your mind for a long time.

This was unexpected. We have Hudson Sometsault the Duke of Blackborne newly returned to England and completely unaware of the horrible rumors surrounding him!
They are saying he shot his cousin in the back in a duel (horrors) amongst other horrible deeds!
Hudson meets Rosalie a seamstress at a brothel! She is there to deliver a scandalously sheet outfit! She is unaware of who her customer is?
Hudson who has been without a woman for sometime grabs her and a very steamy time ensues!
But Rosalee reputation is shredded and Hudson tracks her down!
Her age makes me question why he’s so sure she can give him heirs or babies at all! That time Fran the younger the better!
But Hudson is keeping secrets someone is firing warning shots at him!
Things are definitely not as they seem and Rosalee does her best to keep emotions out of it per her bargain but someone wants to keep secrets and silence one or both of them!
I had trouble believing Hudson a season war vet couldn’t see through the thin veneer of his childhood chum!?
But people believe what they want! Bravo well done! Loved the witty interaction between Hudson and Rosalee!
I received an ARC copy for my unbiased opinion!

Hudson Somersault, Duke of Blackbourne, had come to the House of the Black Rose for a night of pleasure. After what seemed like an interminable wait, he got what he came for, but not with the courtesan he wished to visit. When Rosalie Wayfield, a widowed seamstress, arrived to deliver the garment Lady Rose ordered, she went into the wrong room. There she and Hudson enjoyed the night of pleasure he wished for. Scandal and rumors led to a proposal of marriage, one strictly of convenience – security and an heir. How will such a union work for them. Is it possible they can go from misunderstanding to happily ever after? There is much standing in their way. I liked the way the story slowly unfolded as seen from both Hudson and Rosalie’s point of view. The secondary characters, Kitt and Tom, the Dowager Duchess and her friends, and Sir Waldo, are interesting and likable. There is a slow-burn romance, a mystery with some danger, secrets, rumors, and a bit of fun (supplied by the Vivacious Widows), and satisfying ending.
I voluntarily reviewed a special copy of this book.

Brilliantly written with attention to detail
I liked this dual POV approach, the story reveals itself slowly yet on solid foundations of historical portrayal and beautifully written prose. Descriptions are breathtaking without bogging the reader down. To mention anything sewing related I would normally roll my eyes and mentally retreat, however this story negated my natural aversion with precision and intrigue. While I won’t be rushing to the fabric section any time soon I would like to recommend this book to lovers of Regency / Historical romance and mystery books. The MCs are warm and engaging, the society gossips are hard at work and have ‘crucified’ both the Duke and the seamstress without the guilty weight of truth holding them back. And yet the way they both rise above this narrowmindedness is wonderful. The twists and turns as they solve the true crime is enjoyable. Thank you 😊

What a beautiful historical romance story where the Duke and Rosalie find themselves making decisions neither saw coming! After spending an amazing evening together they both believe their night will remain a secret only for the consequences to negatively impact Rosalie. The Duke needs to marry and produce a heir so after returning from serving his country he makes a deal with Rosalie. Being a successful seamstress one day to not having any jobs due to others judgments she finds the Dukes offer of marriage is the only way to move forward. The Duke has trouble following him from London to the countryside and keeping the danger from his grandmother and Rosalie are a priority. Rosalie honors her side of the agreement with having a heir and even though this marriage is not for love they both find themselves having true emotions and not sure what to do about them. The danger the Duke has been watching comes to an end but in the end he doesn’t see how Rosalie becomes involved.

She's a widowed seamstress who stumbles onto a misunderstood hot duke while delivering a corset to a brothel.
He's a duke with a bad reputation.

What's not to like about this set-up? Nothing. It's a great little set-up.

Tagging this as not for me because the writing is just too fussy. Bu 10%, I was questioning why I was reading it because I just did not care. The female lead doesn't seem to have the backbone to deal with being a scandal, despite having married below her station previously. She's the one who decided on a night of passion in a house that wasn't her own. So.... uh.... comes across like a hypocrite.

Duke Somersault (yes, that's correct) is more likable, but still a mess. He has no idea that there are rumors he's a murderer? Does he live under a rock? I mean, he was reading and resting in London, but he has NO idea? And no friends?

Anyway, not for me. DNF.

Would He Clear His Name?

I enjoyed this well-written, steamy story. Duke Hudson did not want to marry but realised he needed an heir. He was suspected of murdering his best friend and it was making it hard for him to find a wife. He met Rosalie accidentally. She was a widow and, although she was the daughter of a Baron, she was working as a seamstress after the death of her parents. Hudson and Rosalie had an immediate intimate interaction. Hudson tracked Rosalie down a few days later and proposed. After their marriage, there were several times when someone shot at Hudson. Why was someone firing at him? The story follows Hudson's search for the truth and his efforts to clear his name. Would he be able to keep his family safe? His relationship with Rosalie was steamy from the beginning but would he allow himself to love? Read on and enjoy.

Ridiculously implausible from start to finish. Let's start:
1: she's delivering a corset later at night in a seedy brothel, gets accidentally taken for his hired paramour for the evening, then goes along with it, sure sure.
2: somehow everyone knows but the next morning but it's never specified how.
3: he (a Duke) offers to marry her as long as she doesn't fall in love with him and gets right on into making babies for him.
4: she goes out walking at night in the woods, in confronted by literal wolf, who just growls at her and leaves.
5: the villain has a henchman who is never explained who they relate and wtf their job is. The author makes it a point to include this person twice and then poof, they just vanish with no note on why they were there.
6: at one point during sex the author details how many thrusts it takes him to make her come. It's five.

New author for me.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it won’t be the last. I loved the writing style, the 2 POVs, and the short chapters. Hudson, the Duke of Blackbourne just returned from war. A chance meeting with Rosalie, a beautiful seamstress he mistakenly believes is the courtesan he is waiting for, sets in motion a difficult situation for both of them. Rosalie’s reputation is ruined and the Duke rescues her by marrying her. But, someone is out to ruin him as well. Rumors that he murdered his best friend and subsequent attempts on his life put both Rosalie and Hudson in danger.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were relatable and fun to read. Throw in the mystery surrounding the rumors about the Duke and the death of his best friend and the book was great romance with a side of murder mystery. Perfect reading material. This was a hard to put down, page-turner for me. I just had to solve the murder and figure out the source of the rumor. Mostly, I had to keep exploring the chemistry between the Duke and his Duchess. Definitely my favorite book in the series so far.

Absolutely love this. Rosalie is a widow who makes beautiful corsets for a living. She had to deliver one to a courtesans house, well she is told to go yo the wrong room. Hudson the Duke of Blackthorn is in that room, Rosalie and Hudson enjoy a night of passion.

Someone is taking shots at Hudson, Rosalie’s shop is vandalized. Duke show up at her shop and their lives begin. There is passion, humor and mystery.
Looking forward to reading The Duke of Night.

It started out reminding me of another story about a seamstress and a nobleman. The heroine is ruined due to stepping not the wrong room to deliver a garment. The hero comes through to do the honorable thing due to his need of an immediate heir. There are some twists and turns as they navigate the union.

Hudson & Rosalie had a spicy night of fun that lead to quick marriage & mystery!

The banter between the two of them & their hesitancy to let the other know how they felt made for a slow burn…

The mystery kept me thinking I knew what was happening & kept me on my toes guessing.

HEA for the two with the mystery solved!!

Do not waste your time on this poorly written book

Where the story started out interesting with potential to make a good read, the writing ruined the possibility. Historically inaccurate language. Jumping scenes/actions. Ridiculous dialogue. Just absolute trash. I technically DNF but I read far enough to see these were consistent issues.

When chance solves the riddle....

This was a very enjoyable read! Such an interesting chance meeting and both the intrigue and love that follows. Who would ever guess that someone out of the know could be the exact person to help solve the mystery?

What a Rogue

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The mystery was not one that cc ould he guessed easily. Rosalie and Hudson were very active (hot). Their interplay interesting and varied. Some typical man attitudes do not take away from the overall story. Enjoy

I just could not care any less. Grandma’s secret club. Rosalie’s fall into self imposed “ruin.” The Duke’s stalker, his murder-mystery hobby…

Nothing makes any damn sense in this book.
